Also seems like HDCP stripping is a non-issue at this point for this PS4 launch stream which is nice. Someone should tweet Vinny or Drew about going a bit deeper with their encoding settings though. A few tweaks can do wonders for size and quality. 2-pass doesn't even add that much of a hit to time if you have a good enough CPU since it's not actually encoding anything, just analysing stuff.

2pass encoding on my setup would usually add 60-80% more time in the encoding process. I still do it, but it's not "free". However, most of that time is wasted on deinterlacing. On progressive material, everything is easier.

Also, Giantbomb stuff is all uploaded offsite for encoding, which makes sense when you take into consideration that they need at least 3 different encodes of the same content (low, medium and high quality). I don't know how much access to settings other than bitrate hey have, specially since it's probably all hardware encoders.

Either way, Vinny has been preaching "bigger bitrate, still 720p" for a while on every place he's asked: Podcast, his Tumblr and live streams. And I agree with him.

I'd love for them to host 1080/60 high bitrate videos offsite. Throw it up on mega.co.nz like digital foundry did for those interested, and no bandwidth cost.

I don't think it's even about the size. Having the hardware to edit 1080p60 video is a pain in the ass. Most of their capture gear is 720p60 (and probably 1080p30) and 1080p60 capture gear is usually aimed at sports-related TV material. In other words, shit's expensive.

720p with a bigger bitrate is a good compromise for now.

Man, Resogun looks really awesome. This is the kind of game that you don't really get on PCs I feel like.

Add to that the Kongregate flash shmups, numerous Japanese indie shmups, the 10+ "particle shmups" I've played somewhere and didn't remember off the top of my head to link above... and yeah. You're definitely set with this particular sub-genre on the PC.

Yeesh! Just let the guy enjoy his enjoyment of Resogun :p

He can enjoy it as much as he wants, just don't say there's no game of that kind on PC because you'll be almost always wrong. It may not be the same game and it may not be as good, but chances are pretty high that there's a PC game in the veins of whatever game you're thinking.

Hell, there's even a Windjammers analogue to PC. Crazy Power Disc Perfect sucks, but it exists..

If anything, having more games like it to play should make him happier, no?

:D

And because I think it's hilarious - in the span between my first post a couple hours ago and this one, I stumbled upon three more particle shmups in the same vein (without explicitly looking for any, I swear). :lol

Came across these while reading an article about the newly released Humble Store.

edit: and because I feel bad about initially forgetting it, there's also Orbitron: Revolution, made by GAFers. :D

I got the eXceed collection for a few bucks and I really liked them. I'm in the process of 1-CC the third one but god it's hard.

I hope Jeff or someone streams out on twitch via the PS4 at the same time as the stream. Just for a bit at least while they play a game. Interested to see that being done with a lot of people watching on PS4.

I have a feeling twitch will be completely dead for at least the next few weeks. They're going to get hit hard.

Really? Smaller games like that have been arguably the PCs biggest strength over the last 4 years.

You're going to have to expand on this.

Hm, I guess you're right.

It already sucks for the most part, I have no clue how they'll do anything but utterly collapse.

Oh man, I hadn't thought of that. Twitch is already a mess for me (last weekend during WePlay finals, I was not able to watch at a higher quality than Medium and even then it lagged from time to time).

Uh, shit. Twitch streaming is bad enough at the moment (can't even view streams on 'Source'), hoping GB simulcast on Youtube or something.

Their "upcoming" tab has an interview with Yoshida.

NICE

Plus a Ps4 unboxing which could be hilarious (the Wii mini one gave that look brad did when he found out they removed component)

The hysteria over this PS4 review event is ridiculous.

http://blog.jeffgerstmann.net/post/66744412740/am-i-crazy-or-is-this-whole-review-event-thing-a-bit

Anonymous asked:
Am I crazy or is this whole review event thing a bit shady?

Not really. Here’s what I did:

Acquired PlayStation 4 hardware and software that we’ll need for coverage.
Saw some games that will not be out on launch day.
Got some interviews.
Watched a walkthrough of the system’s UI and Store stuff.

I wish this would have happened two weeks ago instead of a few days before launch, but the event itself has been pretty useful.
