Giant Bomb #9 | More Dan Meets The Eye

Do they? I swear I haven't seen anything quite that brutal in a while, though I only having a passing interest in F1 to be fair.

The gif is sped up, the actual crash was at lower speeds than it looks. Seeing the gif then comparing it to the actual video is great though, because Heidfeld got an almost unbelievable amount of air time. Weird consequence of having silent race cars: you can hear screaming in the crowd as they react to the crash.

Cannot wait for the next AltF1 - after the first race of Formula E...

It was kinda nuts

Was he trying to take a turn with the racing line, or did he just smack him in the middle of the straight, because that would be fucking awful.

God I thought for sure that gif was of some guy's death, but no, he was jogging a second after he got out of the car, and all the controversy is about stealling a win, not risking a life.

I guess I underestimate how safe those things are.

That Psycho Mantis fight was great. Good on Dan for downloading a Castlevania save. Going above and beyond for the complete experience.

i don't think jeff understands who smash bros. is for. some people care about fire emblem, no one under the age of 35 cares about excite bike. no one. sure, no one cared about marth(specifically) or ness or rob either, but that's why the weird obscure nes-era game characters occupy less than a third of the roster. from the way jeff's talking, he seems like he'd only be satisfied if that was the entire game.

but that's dumb. nintendo has made games after the 90s too, and those games also have fans. that's why you have "toon link", pokemons, robin and olimar. to an entire generation that is nintendo.

hell, i don't give a fuck about excite bike. im a millenial.(shulk is also lame, though)

I'm under 35 and Excitebike is one of my favorite games of all time. Was thrilled to recently get it for free on Club Nintendo for the Wii U.

Here's the original design of the teddy headmaster:

(img)

I presume they scrapped that because of:
  • Intended target audience
  • Merchandising

The game is kinda gruesome.
Assuming that really was the original design, I would guess they scraped it because it didn't match with the cult of personality type thing they were going for with that character. The game can get pretty gruesome, but it doesn't seem to be gruesome for gruesome sake. A design like that would probably change everything and make the whole game much, much worse.

It's not like a teddy bear headmaster is the most ridiculous anime thing in that game either, so it's pretty misleading to act like people complaining about him would be satisfied with this other design. They'd just be complaining about the other ridiculous anime characters in the game instead.
Like other people said earlier, the gif is accelerated.

Here's the thing at normal speed

I see. Still crazy though.

Ugh, MGScanlon is getting harder and harder to watch, I don't understand why it is such a chore to understand/control.

I get that hes never played it and there is a week gap in between episodes but the game mechanics aren't that hard to understand, especially after 6-7 hours of playing it.

He makes the same mistakes over and over and over and over again, sit in a box in the path of an enemy patrol and they will find you, get in a box when enemy has seen you and they will find you, stand and shoot them and they will keep coming and find you. Most enemies have a temporary invulnerability after you shoot them so you are just wasting bullets spraying at them.

I think it was the former, you can see him look into his right mirror and Heidfeld was far enough left that he didn't see him, he didn't check his left mirror and just turned into the racing line not knowing Heidfeld had pulled out.

*edit* crap sorry for double posting.

The fuck? My appreciation for the bear has just sky-rocketed, lol.

Also, yes, it's one of the few games I've played that I would call decidedly dark.

Not at all the corner is right there but it was Heidfelds once he was right next to him on the inside. That was really reckless of Prost either way.

The corner is where the red stripes are right? Doesn't look like the racing line at all if he was actually trying to take that corner. Checking a lap back, the turn in point is way more down the road. So to me it looks like he was trying to block Heidfeld and just messed up. Either way yes, it was Prost's fault.

Psycho Mantis mentions your Castlevania love by default when played on ps3. At least he did for me and I've never played any of the Castelvania games on my ps3.

For me, stuff like that is why it's my favourite feature in a long time. In the last episode, I loved Dan's polite "maybe if you're going to use that tactic, only take the diazepam before you shoot?" to an exasperated Drew.

How often do you usually hear Drew swear? He's actually breaking and it's hilarious.

So far I've been loving the feature too, and I think it's going to end up being one of their best. Having said that, I really think Dan should have had Drew go through the VR missions before going straight into the game proper, or at the very least have him go over the manual a few times.

That's if they continue the format of having 1-2 longish episodes per week. In my wildest dreams though they see how strong a reaction it has gotten and they switch to an ER-esque schedule.

Despite what we all think Drew isn't a robot! I feel that Drew could read the manual himself if he really wanted to. The man figures out how to play flight simulators, he should be able to prep himself for MGS.

Wow, only 22 minutes for a Metro: Redux Quick Look?

Come on...

Did Dan have a bad day when recording this or something? "I think I might hate this series."
I know that Giant Bomb isn't a website where you go for objective views on games, and I actually love them for that, but I don't understand why you'd let someone play a game from a series that they hate. There's no logic to that.

Scoops does not play games anymore that is why Dan is doing the Metro QL

Tucah

you speak so well
Dan's intense hatred of Metro was hilarious, made what would have probably been a pretty dull QL entertaining.

Yeah it was still pretty funny even with the hate. I like his continuous stabbing of dead bodies while Brad is seriously trying to explain the history of WW2.

I remember Dave loving all of the immersive in game animations for systems that would normally be handled with hud or things like the hand wipe system to clear your vision. Dan immediately calls it out as boring bullshit. I'm pretty sure Dave and Dan are 2 gamers on opposite sides of some gaming spectrum.
