I don't see how this guy can't sit and watch a Metro "cutscene" but was able to sit through MGS4's long bullshit cutscenes where nothing happens in most of them.

Because we all have biases and blind spots. For Dan, it's MGS, and he's never quite been able to rationalize how MGS (a thing he loves) fits with all the things he hates, so he mostly just ignores those problems. As we all do, to some extent.

'this game makes you do a bunch of boring bullshit'

probably one of the reasons why people who like the game like it in the first place

He did say he realizes the irony in him liking MGS cutscenes and not liking how slow Metro is at least.

lol i love how everyone's opinion of dan is slowly, but surely shifting
Nah it's about the same for me. I agree with him sometimes but, most of the time I question how he is alive. He gives a dynamic to GB that wasn't exactly there before but he is the kind of guy that would annoy me. However I can't be completely mad at him since he is so damn honest.

I would put a £10 Gregs gift voucher on Pathfinder being dead though.

Pathfinder, maybe. But I think Rorie said that they're working on something for Giant Bomb Unplugged not too long ago.

Also, that Metro quicklook was bad. I could not stop shaking my head when Dan shared his opinion on subtitled movies.

The Metro games do a fantastic jobs of making you feel lost and engrossed in a really alien world - I think the pacing is key to that. Defo not for everyone.

Oddly, I never got the same feeling from FO3. Enjoyed it, but couldn't get caught up in it. Wonder if NV was any better at it?

I hated going in the underground areas of FO3, but i loved the Metro games. I guess Metro just did it better for me?

Metro commits to the survival aspects, I don't think the the new fallout games really do that. Although new vegas did have that hardcore mode.

you speak so well

I thought NV was better in that aspect but still not as good as Metro, IMO.

7min into Metro QL. The game obviously does not want you to fight these all monsters but rather survive, hide and explore the world. Right?

There's actually little exploration within the games (not sure on Last Light), rather a linear path they set you on is. When you do get to a slightly larger area, which they usually emphasise verticality within the Metro or a slightly larger piece of land on the surface. Fighting all the monsters is definitely not always a possibility on harder difficulties.

I believe any game made before 1997 is "essentially cave man art."
Dan is my favorite type of reviewer and here's why: He's like you and me.
He doesn't dance around a subject, he tells you why or why he doesn't like something and it isn't clouded by what other people think. This may seem "ignorant" but the man knows what he likes and doesn't follow it up with "but other people seem to enjoy it". It's refreshing.

New Vegas has a hardcore mode, yes. More importantly, it has the jsawyer mod (by Josh Sawyer who is, I think, lead designer for NV.) which intensifies the hardcore mode elements and rebalances the game a bit. It's basically a director's cut, and it's fantastic.

One of these days I'll have to try Metro to see how it compares.

Dan's opinions are dork.

His enthusiasm is great, though. Very different from the other members of GBWest.

Reminds me of when I was a teen.

Also, I was watching some random videos on Gamespot. At the end of one video, they actively were advertising to visit Giantbomb at the end.

That's exactly what he does in the Metro QL, though (which makes it a fair QL). I like how different parties keep ignoring that part of it while putting both a negative and a positive spin on it. This thread never ceases to amaze.

Re-watching the Blade Runner Random PC Games now. Man, what a bummer they lost that save and couldn't finish the game. One of the things on the site.

On the surface you can't fuck around too much or you will run out of filters, so pick up what you can find but don't hang around too much. At least that's what I did.

I don't know that I agree "knows what he likes and doesn't mince words" is necessarily like you or I. I try to play everything as much of an open mind as I can. I've liked games way out of my comfort zone before.

Basically I am not sure that is a virtue for everyone.

I enjoy Dan's stuff some of the time but he does wind me up a lot. Its not that his opinions are different to mine, its that he tends to be so dismissive, childish and obnoxious when it comes to any view other than his own.

As someone else said earlier it reminds me of a teenager who still doesnt really know any better. His attitude on life can make for some very funny stories but I bet he would drive me crazy if I knew him in person.

I wouldn't say that Dan just sticks to his comfort zone though, he likes Gone Home to give you one example.

Are you calling me a Dan?

Though my frustration with GB isn't really liking games out of their comfort zones or not, it's just complete and utter disinterest/ignorance in everything that isn't in their comfort zones.

In that respect, the Metro quicklook is better than most things. It's better than just going "Did anyone play Metro?"

"Nah, did they make a third one?"

"It says PS4 and Xbox One. I think the new one is called Metro Redux."

"Yeah, sounds like a game they would make. They're Russian, right?"

"Right, yeah, or Indian or something."

It's always been that way though.

I didn't think it was a great QL, but the way I see it is this: dude spent years getting paid to be a typical critic at a 'safe' publication where you absolutely have to give everything a fair shake. He's now getting paid to be part of a personality focused site where the objective is entertainment. Naturally you're gonna swing a little bit wide at times while internally debating if people want to hear Dan Ryckert's opinion, or a tempered traditional opinion.

You said it best on the previous page, you don't go to GB for tastemakers. You (and most people) might approach games with an open mind, but how entertaining would that be? If the QL wasn't even funny *or* informative, I would say it was a complete failure - but there were some solid laughs so fair play.

this is the shittiest word I've ever heard in my life

I made it 2 minutes into the QL.

Somebody medal me.
I finished it. I deserve to be on currency.

Yup. What's worse is when they know they have to do a quick look of something before hand and already have predetermined notions of a game, especially if its an established series. (ie Mario Kart or Smash Bros) I can't get mad or be surprised at those quick looks as they had no interest going in to begin with. It is fun when they do end up liking something though.

Was it Norm or Will or Gary that was in charge when Tested did that "build a gaming PC" feature where 90% of the comments were that they spent way too much for what they got

I find Dan mostly entertaining, he differs from the staff in some ways (before there was absolutely no coverage about certain types of games and now that gap has thinned a bit), and sort of baffling altogether.

He can be somewhat frustrating on a subject matter that's mostly opinion-based and we're all pretty well-informed about, but, well, so are most people.
