Giant Bomb (and friends) GOTY 2010 Awards

So LTTP here, but I just heard the day 1 podcast and got really interested in the deadly premonition ending (including
the stuff with York
). I saw the first episodes of the endurance run, but now I want to see the ones that cover the mentioned part. Which episodes should I look for?

Mostly the final two or three ones, though there are some earlier ones sometime after halfway that set it up with a glimpse of York's backstory. I can't remember which episode number that was though.

If you want to see some one who's knowledgeable about DP check out:

This guy is doing a 100% run of DP and he's pretty entertaining.

Seconding this. Not to rag on the Endurence Runs (VJ was hilarious), but watching someone that knows exactly what they're doing play Deadly Premonition is a refreshing change of pace. Plus he has an excellent dry sense of humor.

Listening to the DLC discussion on the Day 2 podcast, it's really odd to hear Jeff so down on Bioshock 2 after he gave the game 4 stars while praising its gameplay when he reviewed it.

I feel like that's kind of the norm though, in the games industry, reviews are seen as more an objective evaluation of a product, as if "well the story isn't as good, but the gameplay is better, so you can score it in a range of 8 to 9", if it didn't resonate at all with him, if this industry was as mature as film or novels or music or theatre or television, he could say outright pan it regardless of it's technical or design merits.

That's why it's always fun to read discussion of games more than a year after they shipped because people can be completely honest. It's not even exclusive to the press, on GAF you can't really bag on a new hyped title in it's OT, you get ripped apart, give it a year and no one gives a shit what you say.

EDIT: Listened to the podcast now. Although I think SE abuse the Final Fantasy branding, I certainly don't think it should be going on a break. Versus is the most exciting FF project since X, and although they appear to whore it out, we're only on FF14, and 10 was 2001. 3 official titles in 9 years is nothing compared to something like CoD which is garbage and didn't even get a mention in the conversation.

There are three FFXIIIs (not five as Jeff stated), and although FFXIII isn't amazing, that's really not a reflection of the quality of the other two, and more importantly, people want them to slow down their FF numbered output, and this is how they want to do that, by making more than one game under the numbered banners.

I fully agree if they didn't make all the Crystal Chronicles trash, didn't stick FF on every vaguely connected product they have, the brand would be more meaningful, but the last thing the series needs is a rest, it needs a high quality entry and it looks like it's going to have two of those in the next year or so. This is when people should actually be excited for the franchise.

I agree RDR was the best ending of the year, if not of all of gaming, although I would probably favor Braid in that discussion.

I was surprised Yakuza 3 didn't enter into the best PS3 discussion, I would think it was obtuse and bizarre enough to get some admiration for the group.

Think they really meant the brand itself though, mostly. It's an especially subjective category, dealing with how fatigued they feel about a franchise/brand/series. For guys like them, fans of a number of previous FF-games but not obsessively following every one of them, it kinda feels like there's a dozen Final Fantasy-games releasing each year. Spin-offs, remakes, ports, whatever. Sure, they're not part of the main numbered series, but they add to the disinterest for the brand itself. When these guys grew up, a Final Fantasy-game being released meant something. These days, it feels like 90% of what Square releases is somehow tied to FF.

Yes, there's been less mainline-FF's than Call of Duties in the past few years. But take the brand itself: one Call of Duty-release a year (perhaps one or two for the iPhone, too, maybe), (nearly) all of them getting high scores and winning many Game of Year-awards.

'Most devalued brand' is probably the kind of terms they'd use if they were looking at it business-wise. Call of Duty? Still the biggest brand in gaming. Guitar Hero? Used to be Call of Duty-big. After the past two years, consumers stopped caring. Same seems to be happening for Final Fantasy, in the west, for these guys.

Doesn't mean there's no room for FFXIII Versus if it's as good as you say it is; just means Square should probably stop also releasing sixteen other Final Fantasy-games around it. Take a break: quality over quantity.

Well I fully agree with that, but as far as I know, three Final Fantasy games came out this year, XIII (the first from that team since X2), XIV (the sequel to XI which was eight years ago) and FF: The 4 Heroes of Light, which is an original title for DS that was by the people who remade 3 and 4 for DS.

None of them are very good, and of course it would be better if every game named Final Fantasy was awesome, and they were much further apart but I really don't think SE milk the franchise as much as people make out. Maybe it feels like it because they announce them so much we always know of a few in production, but in terms of releases, it's really not that huge a volume.

I'm not saying they shouldn't slow it down, I believe they should, for example I don't think the Crystal Chronicles franchise should have the Final Fantasy name, it was only to appease Nintendo and boost sales, that was a disingenuous use. But without question SE should put out the three announced upcoming Final Fantasy titles, walking away for a few years is not going to do anything to help them. Versus being incredible alone would restore all faith in the franchise (I'd say Agito but unless it moves platform it's not going to matter outside of Japan).

As for sales, they did say that wasn't a factor in the debate. FFXIII sold well.

Anyone else taking bets on their GOTY? I feel it's gotta be Mass Effect 2, the GB staff liked that game and have it high on their top lists so i figure when they start their deliberations a consensus will be reached quickly. I will be very surprised if it's not Mass Effect 2.

Yeah it will be. I'm saying Red Dead vs Mass Effect 2 at the end, maybe AC:BH too with Jeff's vote favouring ME2 as he didn't like RDR.

I hope they open Dave's emergency letter though.

It SHOULD be either ME2 or AS:Brotherhood as those have been 1 or 2 on 3 of the 4s list so far. If it somehow ends up not being one of those due to a filibradster I'm going to be very disappointed in the GB crew for caving.

Seems like they remembered GOW3 for the PS3-only award. :lol
Yeah, they even talked about how awesome and beautiful it was, very odd.

I wish Enslaved wasn't a bad game, I'd like to have played thru it.

so he's gonna argue for red dead since he realized no way in hell starcrafts getting it

its up to vinny to save the day. hope they didnt give in like that bioshock crap

The fact that Jeff is likely going to be arguing against Red Dead for GOTY is so weird when you consider that he argued so strongly for GTA IV in 2008.

My thoughts exactly. I have a feeling that Jeff's distaste for RDR (not even including it in his top ten) will ultimately sway the odds in ME2's favor. AssCreedBro and Starcraft 2 (if Brad tries hard enough :D ) will also probably be the other top contenders.

I doubt he'll argue against RDR as much as for something he's played. He isn't going to be criticizing RDR.

It's a shame, it's such a far better game than GTA4, I'd think anyone who liked GTA4 (as I did) would adore it.

Jeff doesn't like old stuff. The Western setting put him off. It's a pity put whatever. It's certainly leaps and bounds better than GTAIV.

This is where the crew placed the most likely GotY contenders in their personal lists:

Vinny

1. Mass Effect 2
2. Red Dead Redemption
3. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
8. Starcraft II

Jeff

1. Mass Effect 2
2. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
10. Starcraft II

No Red Dead Redemption

Ryan

1. Assassin's Creed Brotherhood
2. Mass Effect 2
3. Red Dead Redemption

No Starcraft 2

Brad:

1. RDR
2. SCII
4. ME2

No ACBro|

Yeah. Pooyan!

Seriously, they should have just given the award to P3P or MGS5 and at least acknowledged the existence of the platform. :lol

I'm gonna guess a fight between SCII, RDR, and ME2, with either ME2 or RDR winning.

Good list Brad! cough *otherthanHeavyRain* cough. :p
