Well that was the best mailbag video ever but some distance!

Re: GDC that is really disappointing if they don't end up doing streams, always some of my favourite stuff. I know attending pax is probably really satisfying them because of all the fan interaction but 3 a year does seem a bit much. I personally don't enjoy the panels a great deal because I think the pressure of them being in front of a live audience leads to unnatural conversations and a lot of the humour feeling forced, in contrast the regular podcast.

I think it's a case of them enjoying PAX more, and "sacrificing" the GDC content (which is that one evening of discussion with devs) this year because of the overlap. For how long in advance you have to submit your panel, I wouldn't be that surprised if they just didn't know about the overlap when they submitted their PAX East panel.

I think there was like a 3-week gap between the two events last year, and it looks like both were moved to earlier in the year compared to last year (GDC by well over a month). Just seems like some awful planning.

I enjoy their PAX panels give or take the Q&A, but the GDC panel is some of the best content they did (last year had drunk Lang and Johnny V with Ed Boon). Oh well, just have to wait for E3 for that kind of stuff on the site then!

This mailbag is incredible, Jeff is killing it and Drew looks too convincing. Someone should probably check if Dany is okay.

But not gonna lie, I'm totally on the side of that Wired editor - I could not work in an office like that, just looking at the desks made me itchy.

What Wired editor?

Wow

Jeff managed to make Hardline look kinda fun. I don't care for its TTK, seems incredibly fast and ruining the pacing for me but boy does launching motorcycles at capture points look enjoyable.

So really no GDC streams this year? That sucks. After the E3 steams they are my favorite content every year.

Kinda wished they skipped PAX East instead. They already were at PAX South just a few weeks ago.

The problem is - I don't think it is just a case of a schedule clash for GB. It is going to be a schedule clash for everyone.

GDC steams happen at the end of the week because devs are there for the conference and - if they are lucky - socialise and drink at night. They do this for 2 or 3 days and then they will go on a stream like the ones GB host and then head home. This year they will have to work GDC for 3 days and then likely have to head to PAX - either as a work commitment or just because they want to go themselves.

So not only do GB not have the time to do the streams at the end of the week - I think they would find it very difficult to book guests even if they decided to blow off PAX. They have said previously that they could not get people early in the week and even at the end, some people had to head home.

I am sure the dates were forced on both parties - the necessity of booking a conference centre whenever you can - but it kinda fucked GDC this year. Some devs are going to be working one hell of a long week.

The PAX panels also typically end up being more boring versions of Bombcasts with even worse "emails".

I'm not even sure if the whole Rumble gimmick will be fun anymore.

Yeah, that's probably true. I would imagine that at least a bunch of the indie devs will go to straight to PAX. It's just a baffling scheduling conflict.

Since PAX starts on the last day of GDC I can't see how indie devs can do both, if you want to show your game at GDC are you going to leave before the show is over to get set up at PAX. I think for most it will be one or the other and I imagine most will choose GDC because it is probably their only chance to meet up with other devs and friends in the industry as well as networking around the IGF and PAX has two other shows this year.

gdc is the best thing after game of the year

i mean come on*

pax is so crap in comparison i'm all about gb chatting to devs and getting crazy and there has been a lot less of that in the studio recently.

*i hope that pic actually was from gdc and i'm remembering right

I'm relieved to hear the sight is not a real eotech. Still, that airsoft rifle is ridiculous. What a crazy, awesome mailbag. Do you think they actually won't do any video with Star Fox 2? Like, is Jeff actually worried about the legal ramifications?

I think Jeff just running around yelling "Copcopcopcopcopcopcopcop" in the Battlefield QL was strangely, my highlight so far this week.

I didn't make it all the way through the Pappa Dan quick look. I stopped when Paul was drunk and trying to sit in the chair in JazzPunk. Still, really funny to watch.

One Man Band indies will likely favour GDC, but then I always got the impression that all the business was done early in the week so I guess they can do both at a push. There are plenty of smaller devs that have enough people to attend GDC and have the staff to ready their booth presence at PAX. They are in an awkward situation as a lot of business gets done at GDC but PAX is a huge promotional opportunity.

I personally much prefer E3 to GDC, just because we get way more of the same thing at E3. GDC is just one night, E3 is several.

Yeah, I can see a lot of indies leaving GDC a day early this year to go to PAX. As you say, as long as you're not so small that you're needed in the conference hall to set up a booth or whatever I can't really see any big obstacle to doing both except for how fucking tired you'll be. Both events are hugely important for indies for different reasons.

The show floor this year for PAX East will be very interesting.

A lot of people were noting that last year the heavy hitters were mostly absent. As a person going to PAX East, I'm curious if that trend continues.

I am currently listening to that Dan and Paul Christmas podcast and holy heck is this guy really in his thirties? Between that half hour waxing on grandpa rock and what he considers "normal guy stuff", I would've easily mistake him as being a decade or two older than he really is if I knew nothing about him.

But seriously, he really does take from his old man.

That was exactly what I was thinking. I'm 50 and even I thought "Damn, this dude has some old guy tastes." :) Dan is like every bro I remember hanging out with when I was 16 back in 1980. He is a riot.

That week is going to take a toll on small indie devs who are tight on budget to have to fly out to san fran, fly to boston then fly back to wherever their home base is. Must be a tough life.

The bombcast thread always has people salty as fuck over stuff in the cast that I don't even think twice about. I can never predict what's going to get people upset from one week to the next

Jeff really had me cracking up in the hardline video.

That game's premise seems incredibly ill conceived, but to the point where it's kind of funny

.

you have made me feel like a crazy person

i feel like i just got reminded about something as basic as shoes.

still think gdc has its own special flavour, a little less media trained on guard vibe.

Jeff has firearms training right? That whole segment was hilarious.

Meanwhile I really want to hear a podcast where they're yelling at each other on how to properly dispose of the cardboard. Would really make me happy to see all that trash and clutter thrown away... Kinda can't believe those Shaq sodas are still there.

Also Besiege is fucking amazing. My new favorite time sink.

well it looks like i'm gonna be home the next few days doped up on prescriptions so i don't really have an excuse to not get this anymore.

you all win.

The video convinced me to break my no Early Access policy so there's that.

Yesterday I made a tank that flung fireballs and had spring-loaded spikes to defend itself.
