Giant Bomb |OT32| I've been meaning to love a boat

Out of curiousity, what other gaming podcasts do people listen to outside the GB family? I decided to give the Polygon Show a shot a few weeks ago as I'd been following more of their video content as of late and I gotta say, the all-female lineup is pretty rad. After listening to GB and GB-adjacent shows for a while its been interesting hearing how different outlets approach talking about games, and their enthusiasm is pretty infectious.

8-4 Play
The occasional Waypoint Radio
Polygon Show but I fell off (no critical reason; I fall out of shit all the time)
I listened to one Easy Allies episode and I dug it but I never went back for whatever reason

Dan is both the best and worst thing that has happened to this site.

I'm kidding, I have my complaints but I think Dan's fantastic.

I think you may have unsold me on the game. But then again, Alex likes it too so maybe it isn't the off-putting type of millennial stuff?

Depends on what you mean by millennial stuff. Like it's very specifically about the struggles of millennials in a dying coal town and rural poverty, but I think it applies to the millennial struggle generally.

There are spoilers (fairly mild depending on what your tolerance on spoielrs are) in this writeup but I think it's a fantastic writeup on why I think the game is so special.

Also helps that to me it has one of the best LGBT characters in a medium that sadly still struggles with depicting non-straight characters.

I don't have enough time for it anymore, but I still enjoy the occasional Roundtable Podcast. Highly recommend it if you're into indie games

Picked up Dan's latest book again last night and man, what the hell is this dude's life! A really entertaining read so far (just finished the George Clinton chapter)! It's would be hard to believe the stories if they came from someone, literally anyone, other than Dan.

Which one is his latest? Is it The Dumbest Kid in Gifted Class? Or is there a new one out?

Speaking of, I finished episode 1 of Before the Storm last night and I really loved it, I'd even put it over any individual episode of the first series probably. The writing is really good and they nailed Chloe. I can't wait for the rest of the series.

Yeah I just bought that too. Dunno if I should play now or wait till the episodes are all released.

Oh okay that actually sounds very cool. I didn't know the game was about that (I avoided further impressions once I learned it was a good story-based game). Clearly I've been watching too much GB since when you said millennial stuff I thought you meant fidget spinners and dabbing. Which was dumb on my part.

10 minutes into the latest Exquisite Corps. Dan is AMAZING.

Also, kudos to DeathMetalist for this brilliant Twin Peaks-themed OP.

Hmm i might pick this up.
PC only?

Yeah I just bought that too. Dunno if I should play now or wait till the episodes are all released.

There are only 3, but the first one was 3-4 hours, longer than the first game's episodes. And they've said it'll be about 8-10 weeks between episodes, unfortunately. I personally like playing them episodically, though I wish there was less of a delay between episodes. If I played them all back to back I might actually die of melancholy. I'm such a mark for quiet town high school shit with melancholy post-rock. Friday Night Lights, 13 Reasons Why, LiS, Edge of Seventeen - give it all to me.

I liked LiS a ton but man the trailer(s) for the new one just don't look that great to me?? Would you guys recommend it?

If you liked the original, there's 99.9% chance you will love this. It's easily up to the same level, if not better.

I played it on PS4.

I'm all about melancholy and depression this year for whatever reason. Like I just finished a visual novel that's about existentialism in a really harrowing way.

I'll give it a look.

So far everyone I trust said it's good or even better than expected. Gives me hope.

Thanks guys, I will keep that in mind... knowing that I will end up getting it down the road for sure. Too much to play right now (not that its going to change anytime soon, next month is ridiculous).

Started Ch2 in Rabbids last night, really enjoying it so far. Learning how Vamp works was a huge game changer haha, the description in the skill tree made it sound like it would only let Rabbid Luigi steal health. I completed 9/10 of the challenges in world 1, just couldn't beat the Toad escort (might be able to now, but probably not gonna try again till I beat chapter 2).

The Easy Allies Podcast is fun and has an atmosphere not totally dissimilar to something like the Beastcast.

I'd like to give the Polygon Show a shot at some point.

It seems to me that she's 100% okay with story games, but in any game that has action she pays no attention to the story no matter what.

I remember when they all started talking about Wolfenstein: The New Order after the new game was announced, she started playing it and when they asked how far she was she really had no idea because she had been skipping/not paying attention to the cutscenes, while everyone else was talking about the story.
Isn't she playing Lost Legacy too? I doubt she's skipping the story in that, but who knows. But yeah you're kind of right, although I don't see much a problem with that considering the amount of games with good traditional storytelling that aren't "story games" is pretty slim.

I like Wolfenstein a lot but I do think it stumbles with some of its storytelling, and the beginning mission isn't exactly a good place to try and get invested in things imo. The core writing and dialogue is great, but how they get BJ from place to place and set up missions is a little rocky. Knocking your main character out multiple times and doing a lot of time lapses/skips in your story can be cheap and amateurish way of getting characters where you want them to be. I wasn't fully into it the first time I played either.

While we're doing recommendations, anyone have any for a GB fan wanting to dig into the McElroy boys? I've been bummed about games since reading some of the responses to the PDP thing, but in that thread someone cited the McElroys as a positive example of streamers. I'd like to start watching some of their stuff but I have no idea where to start, so some recs would be welcome!

I listen to the Easy Allies/Frametrap stuff, I still listen to the occasional Podcast Beyond and Nintendo Voice chat. Fell off the Kinda Funny Stuff but got back on that train with "Kinda Funny Games Daily" (it's surprisingly solid for an hour long show recorded every weekday). Waypoint Radio is mostly pretty great, and I also really dig Polygon's "The Besties".

I need to check out that Polygon show. I didn't even know it existed!

Get yourself to the Monster Factory show ASAP. Griffin's Nuslocke run of Pokemon X/Y is also pretty great.

Monster Factory is great. I'm also a big fan of MBMBaM, but it's not gaming-focused. The MBMBaM TV show is great too but not a good place to start with them.

I listen to Waypoint radio every once in awhile. I appreciate their different takes on subject matters and the way they won't mince words.

Yeah, it's about "millennial stuff" in as much it is about a college dropout in a modern setting returning home to her similarly aged friends. It is fantastic and made me laugh and feel things a ton and is one of the best things I've played in a long time.

I don't know if you're talking about Mae (I'm guessing Gregg or Angus?) but the epilogue scene of Mae repeating the same way she pictures her future as in Lost Constellation but now also talking about how she always pictures herself with another woman hit me in a way I didn't expect.

I should have specified cast. I love them all for various reasons, but yes,
Mae I love because of how imperfect she is.

I love Angus too though. He's actually a pretty non-stereotypical gay guy. He also pretty much has my favourite line in the game.
I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people who do.
That line just encapsulates the whole game for me.

Thanks for the recommendations, Rumble and Sleeping. I'm starting Monster Factory with Dark Souls 2 now and the premise already sounds amazing.

Edit: I'm trying to tell the voices apart. I think I recognize Justin's voice from his appearances on the E3 shows, and Griffin is the one with a slight lisp right?

Hmm, I'll probably end up playing this at some point. Just seems so endearing.

I like Frametrap from Easy Allies, they have really good discussions. I'll make more of an effort some weeks than others depending on who is on the show.

I kind of listen to 8-4 play, but sometimes that show is just a complete waste of time, they just ramble on about fuck all for incredible lengths of time.

Waypoint Radio once in awhile as well.

Bomb and Beast are really the only ones I 100% listen to every week. The other mainstay podcasts I listen to are all film related.

I usually find Dan funny and entertaining. I even enjoy it when he's trolling the rest of the crew when they play something competitive!

But for when they're playing anything cooperative and he does that shtick? It's not fun. It's just unpleasant and unnecessary. He doesn't have to introduce any more conflict when there already is a thing the GBEast crew has to overcome. There already is a heel. It's the aliens and the unforgiving difficulty of the game. Their skill and understanding of the mechanics are already at a level where a troll-free playthrough will still be interesting and exciting.

XCOM is a great game! It's not like Kingdom Hearts where people playing need to put on some affectation to give people a reason to watch. The changing commander every week is enough of a gimmick. Dan doesn't need to put on a show to get the audience to react and keep watching. Nothing clever about his trolling either.

You hear the frustration in Vinny's voice when he had to get Dan to quit what he was doing. You hear it with Jeff and Alex in the PUBG streams. I can't imagine they find it amusing when he's putting on that character either during these streams where they should be working together.

I've stopped watching Kingdom Heartache. I'll just skip whenever it's Dan's turn in Exquisite Corps. There's a nice recap at the start of every episode anyway.

TLDR Dan is entertaining well enough without trolling co-op streams.

Also yes The Polygon Show is great and it's refreshing to hear an all-woman cast. Simone is hilarious and knows exactly when to move on to another segment as the host.

Are weekly PUBG streams still doing it for people? I tuned into the first couple when the game was still a novelty and I'm sure it's fun to play if you're into it but I find it super dull to spectate.

They never truly did it for me, but it's far fromt he worst content they're putting out.

That said, if they're all committed to getting together cross coast once a week, I'd much rather they rotate the games they play, just because it's such a rare occurrence that they're together.

They have moments that are in the weekly best ofs, but its all their good for.

Agreed on most of the thoughts on this weeks Exquisite Corps and Dan.
His antics are turning me off this series.

He's becoming the Roman Reigns of GBeast. Trying too hard, not even good at the game and ruining the series by making everything about him.

(love SMS though)

That'd be correct. Griffin's voice is the higher one. It took me forever to figure that out.

Yeah I hope they continue the monday get together after they fall off of PUBG and/or get a chicken dinner.

Outside of GB the only other gaming pod I listen to is 8-4. Outside of that the occasional Back in My Play or Retronauts depending on the topic.

Watching the Will/Gary PUBG streams really underscores how the Giant Bomb crew have failed to improve in any meaningful way. You don't have to be super skilled at first-person shooters to win, you just have to be smart and learn.

Yeah, I didn't think Dan could top his last episode, but here we are... I think the thing that actually got me the most was
him giving all the medals to his "new" self insert character no matter what they were for.

Can we have BitE back now?
