Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

I adore the series but FE is not really complex, certainly not by SRPG standarts,

I respectfully disagree. To me, most SRPGs are pretty much JRPGs with a grid. Customizing your dudes is as far as the "strategy" portion goes, usually. FE doesn't have the mountains of weird subsystems most SRPG are plagued with, but that leads to a game where being mindful of where you position your units and the way you approach enemies is more important than a character's level or the skills you equipped.

and not all games of the series are difficult.

hm, I'll admit, Sacred Stones is quite a push-over. That one aside, though, I think pretty much every other FE game is quite challenging.

I wonder how much P3 Jeff played. I know he finished Persona back in the day, and Vinny was playing through P3P at the time of the quicklook, but...

Did Jeff play P3..? I thought he never did.

Hey Giant Bomb I hear those guys are alright

Jeff looks like a Walking Dead character.

The lack of complex subsystems is exactly why FE is one of my favourite SRPG's (and why i think it's accessible). Also, i wasn't implying that the series was shallow. Fire Emblem is simple but it has a lot of depth, it wouldn't be a good game otherwise.

Ah, gotcha. Maybe "complex" is the wrong word to use...let's say "demanding", then?

I just feel like you have to understand FE mechanics a lot more than the standard FFT-like if you want to do well. If I played FE games the same way I play most SRPG, I think I'd get my shit pushed in pretty quick, lol.

He seems to allude to at least knowing about Aigis in the P4A review, but I'm not sure if that's just because he looked her up on the wiki or not

The last time I remember Jeff talking about Persona games before Arena was in a QLEX with Dave Lang and his awful sling-shot game(forgot the name, sorry). I think he said he was only interested in P4. I think he went into P4A fresh and just came out liking hte P3 cast.

So who do you guys think were more adored by the internet in general: 1UP crew during the heyday, or Giantbomb as it stands now?

1UP probably. More people, more produced videos, more content in general. A bigger site at the time. All meant many more visitors and probably more fans.

I'm not saying that the people were more fun to listen to or anything (well maybe Jeff Green was) but I wouldn't be suprised if more did listen to them back in '06 or '07.

Now if we were talking about who had the more rabid fans, I'd probably say GB. Some people are nuts.

I think 1-Up had maybe a bigger cult following in the US and on American forums whereas Giant Bomb is much more popular on a worldwide basis.

Giant Bomb, easily. I rarely heard about 1up or references to it back when they were popular. I hear 'ride meet horse' in completely unrelated videos.

I don't think 1up was funnier or more "meme-able" than GB is. But I don't doubt for a second it reached more people.

Someone whip out the alexa charts.

I remember '06-'08 1UP having just completely mind blowing content and so much goodwill...I always figure that was the void the GB duders were setting out to fill, and they seemed to have gotten pretty damn close.

Those few months where we simultaneously had the Bombcast, GFW Radio, EGM Radio, 1UP Yours, Legendary Thread, Retronauts, the 1UP Show, the Joystiq Podcast, and Idle Thumbs... good times if you like podcasts.

The concentration of familiar names at 1UP during its prime was pretty high.

What happened to them all? Shitty politics? Stuffy suits?

High costs to run, and they had little to no idea of exactly how to properly monetize web content (especially podcasts and videos).

Think about how GB has alluded to troubles finding advertising, but imagine having something like 3 times the staff.

Bombcast - still dropping bombs on it.

GFW/EGM/1UPYours/1UPShow/LegendaryThread/Retronauts - victims of the many blood purges that began with the sale of 1UP from Ziff Davis to Hearst and then to News Corp.

Idle Thumbs - The Doctor Who of podcasts - died twice and was reborn in new incarnations. Both times the podcast died because one of the hosts left due to a great job opportunity. The podcast shutting down was just an unfortunate byproduct. Hopefully it will last for many years in body #3.

Joystiq Podcast - Chris and Justin are now at Polygon, Ludwig is now EiC of Joystiq

Yeah it seems like Giant Bomb was formed with the intention of having no management oversight after seeing what happened to the rest. Such a shame but at least the ones working in the industry are doing what they love, right?

Poor management seems to be a theme in the Gaming industry.

I do wonder how much GB makes from subscribers.

Assuming that they're at 20k subscribers now (I think that they're last reported numbers are 18k?) with a median of $4 per user (accounting the deals), do you that they're pretty much self sustainable now? Which means around 960k per year, though I know that I'm high balling the amount they actually make.

Also that's not accounting what they get from web ads.

Heh. More like the first 50 where like Doctors 1 through 7, the comeback was the TV movie with 8, and modern Thumbs is modern Who. :P

there's the store too, although it's hard to know how much they make from that. Probably not a whole lot.

All that podcast sponsorship money. Zojirushi paid them off super well.

Reminds me, I wonder how that tortilla maker stuff turned out for Vinny. At least, I think it was a tortilla maker. Breakfast burrito recipe from Vinny, chicken sandwich recipe from Drew, and a chili recipe from Dave for dinner. A complete Flight Club meal for your every day life.

Also will cause you to crash to an early death.

Much like flight club.

They must do well via subscriptions relative to the number of hits per day they get, since Jeff cited that one of CBSi's main interest in purchasing them was in findings ways to monetize their other sites the same way by learning from Giantbomb.

They average around 160k-150k visitors per day according to quant cast.

This is interesting.

Giant Bomb's demo's match up with gaf's pretty well:

Or at least compared to the "internet average".

You can't see what gamespot or 1up is for example, but here is gamefaqs and then ign:

A lot younger, and probably as a byproduct of that less education.

Here's reddit's:

They are the average.

Disclaimer: I have no clue how they collect this data or how accurate it is. Seems like there are too many asians.
