Giant Bomb Thread #4: A thread of perceived slights

Got up to go to a meeting, came back, and the first song that played on my Amazon Cloud Player was Your Affection.

So I'm now rewatching the P4 Endurance run as well.

Behold, the new format of entertainment.

Edit: The number 1 thing I want in the new site is the ability to chain feature links together. It's a pain in the ass watching endurance runs outside of the HTML5 theater, and even then, the numbering is rarely sequential on a search.

have you tried the giantbomb boxee app? I watch 99% of the content from the site on my TV at night. I think the PC app may still work as well. Just a thought because the ER's are cataloged and ordered perfectly.

GLHB.

I'd love to be a fly on the wall for those meetings. I don't understand why there are so many meetings when Giant Bomb works best autonomously. Not even dat CBSi money got them a better housing for their E3 shenanigans.
Yeah, I would love to be there now, but man, I feel like it would have been just as interesting if not more to see the meetings go down pre-giantbomb buy out on both sides.

It's ordered on their youtube page, I believe (TheRealGiantBomb).

New theory: Short weeks tend to end up having more content than regular weeks.

This isn't a lack of content complaint, just something that I've been noticing recently.

Their subscriber content is pretty cool. Devil May Cry isn't exactly thrilling but seeing Brad say fuck you is always pretty entertaining. Especially since I swear at the TV myself.

I haven't played Bulletstorm, but who the hell cares about cursing? If anything is embarrassing, it's Gears of War: Simplistic storyline combined with absurd chainsaw-guns that produce huge blood-fountaines as a dominating gameplay element

It's not a conversation about cursing, it's a conversation about childish bro humor taking over the selling process. Saint's Row The Third was awesome, but the only thing we really heard about it before it came out was "HEY GUYS! CHECK OUT THIS DILDO BAT! YOU CAN HIT PEOPLE WITH IT! WANNA RUN AROUND AS A HOT NAKED CHICK! YOU CAN! CHECK OUT ALL THESE HOES! YOU CAN HAVE AN ARMY OF HOES!"

And in the final product, it was just window dressing that really didn't mean too much. So it's odd when Cliff calls out SR3 for doing that when BulletStorm, a game he produced, did the same thing before release.

Edit: I was slightly disappointed that you couldn't actually have an army of hoes. I always want more dress up options in my games.

Marketing always has the last word :/

Marketing wants what they can use to sell something. "Dicktits" could have been to Bulletstorm what the Penetrator is to SR3 but whereas the latter is fairly unrepresentative of the whole game, Bulletstorm never lets up. So in that sense, Cliffy's deriding SR3 for doing something that a game with his name on is waaaaaaay more guilty of doing.

I haven't followed the discussion all to closely, that makes sense. But I still think the glass house that is Gears of War makes it problematic for @therealcliffyb to throw stones: No need to reach for Bulletstorm. Cliffy B should take a hard look at how "mature" his own games were before trashing others.

I said this in the Cliffy thread, but his comments are just so weird and infantile. It shows how developers can act just as childish as the fan base.

Could you imagine Michael Bay going on twitter to say "Err guys, the Crank films are too blue, they should be more like Training Day"? Why should he even care to change a unique franchise? And wtf at his reasoning that because sexuality is taboo in the US, so all entertainment should fall in line?

For some reason he's really impressed with himself and feels the need to impart his wisdom on the industry.

Someone needs to dig up that GoW video interview where in the middle of asking Cliff a question, he shouts out 'meatflaps!'. Or when he asked a fan if his sister was hot. Or when he tells the story of meeting his wife. Apparently only he's allowed to be crass (or maybe they were just 'mistakes' too).

I though micheal bay did that.

Cliffy kinda destroys his argument in this exchange. Cliffy claims that Bulletstorm and Saints Row the Third diminished their potential by having marketing focused too much on their crassness. Cliffy's argument was to therefore remove the crassness from the game.

Wouldn't it make more sense for their marketing departments to instead stop poorly advertising the games? Why would you want to compromise a game's vision because marketing sucks at their job? Lets make every game as milquetoast and focused tested as possible so that marketing can have an easy job!

WHERE IS THE PODCAST, it's already wednesday where I live.

I NEED MY FIX, GOD DAMN I SWEAR I'm NOT AN ADDICT.

are there any tweets about ETA... IS JEFF alive?

Is vinny confirmed!?!?!?

Maybe if I listen to some of the old ones in I can hold over until the dealer is available for the new shit.

Saints Row sold me based on the silliness of it all wrapped in an open world. I know every single FPS or TPS or open world will have me kill people. I just want to fly choppers, own property, level up my dudes and collect cars.

Dunno about debating, but he's certainly not afraid to call bullshit in the most direct way. Anyway, it's welcome all the same. I feel like game's industry people fondle each other's balls too readily. Which leads to this:
For some reason he's really impressed with himself and feels the need to impart his wisdom on the industry.

Ryan didn't even have to go to Bulletstorm to make his point. Gears of War is just as crass in many ways and actually falls on its face because of it when it tries to take itself more seriously. Burly men chainsawing crocodile people in half, heads exploding into strawberry jam and who could forget the comedy relief black guy, advertised by a trailer set to Gary Jules' rendition of Mad World. Weirdly nobody thinks of it when the topic of pretentiousness comes up.

Is this meant to make Ryan look dumb?

Because Cliff's argument is entirely consistent. He is saying that SR3 suffered from emphasizing the crassness and so did Bulletstorm, to the point where it won't get a sequel because marketing chose to focus on the wrong thing.

Ryan's point seems to be that Cliff is being hypocritical on the Saint's Row discussion because of Bulletstorm, but Cliff acknowledges it as a mistake. Not even his mistake, but a mistake that cost Bulletstorm nonetheless.

It just makes Ryan look like someone going "YEAH HOW DARE YOU INSULT SR3 I'LL POINT OUT YOUR FAILINGS TOO" and Cliff looking measured and calm in response.

Disclaimer: I fucking love SR3 and hate how Ryan threw it under the bus in 2011.

Probably my favourite parts of the Endurance Run are when it completely blindsides Jeff and Vinny. Good examples are Mysterious Fox (first meet, Junes meet, inside a dungeon), the first turn for the worst, episode 130, and Episode 135.

There seems to be a budding rivalry in the gaming journalist culinary department. After the wondrous gift that was Drew's oven-fried Frito chicken, today Greg Miller and Colin Moriarty of IGN posted Colin's chicken cutlet recipe on their weekly show A Conversation With Colin. This is almost certainly entirely coincidental and are in no way antagonistic o each other, but it's fun to make up beef where there likely is none.

Plus, Colin's chicken looks tastier than Drew's. I'm just saying. Fried beats baked any day.

That is exactly what you're saying in the part I quoted.

*raises an eyebrow*

I am not sure at all how you're getting that, but I will try to rephrase.

I liked Bulletstorm as it was. I don't think it should have been changed, though I think marketing may have misrepresented that game. Cliff Blezinski is of the belief that the crassness did not help either Saint's Row 3 or Bulletstorm. Despite being a producer for the game, he did not interfere with the game the way was written, despite this assumed disapproval, and found the way the game was presented to the audience to do it a disservice.

I don't think marketing should dictate a game's development, no, nor do I think Blezinski is correct in his assessment of Saint's Row 3 though I do agree with his assessment of Bulletstorm's marketing not representing the actual product. I just think, in the posted exchange with Ryan Davis, he had the more logically consistent argument and implying hypocrisy would be wrong.

I feel like Cliff should have had the foresight to recognise people would cry hypocrite, and he should have tackled it head on to start with.

Now, I don't even know what to think.

I think Bulletstorm's marketing was a lot better a representation of the game than SR3's was, at least. Both approaches were disappointing.

But I already signed up for Drew's sandwich of the day club....

My take on it is Ryan's pointing out that you don't get to spend the majority of your career brewing a particular brand of crass, then shit on another developer's crass.

Cliff is acting schizophrenic with his criticisms in that he hasnt got a single peice of 'thoughtful' entertainment to his name yet because he quit 5mins ago, thinks he's now able to judge and then hide behind America's cultural issues with sexuality.

But I already signed up for Drew's sandwich of the day club....

In all honesty, I tried out Drew's recipe and didn't care for it. Way too basic and the baking instead of frying leaves a bit to be desired. Healthier, to be sure, but if i'm eating crispy breaded chicken health is not my goal. Perhaps it's my Southern heritage talking.

I don't see anyone espousing that viewpoint, especially not me.
Maybe I don't remember the tweets correctly, but he started the discussion saying that SR3 stood in its own way by being wacky, not just by being marketed as such and that this is what prevented it from seriously challenging GTA.

I've heard so many people say this but can you back that claim up with anything? What I recall is stuff like the dildo appearing among all the other crazy, over the top stuff being shown off ahead of the game's launch, and the community latched onto the sexual stuff, particularly the stupid ass dildo, and wouldn't shut up about it.

Anyway, Ryan shouldn't have used Bulletstorm as his example. He should have gone directly at Gears. There's more than enough cringeworthy material in that series.

The Giant Bomb guys hated the way SR3 was being marketed before it came out. See: "Strap it on!" I don't personally remember hearing much else about the game before it came out, but to be fair, I wasn't watching coverage of it closely.

ARGHHH... I never had issues with the site's video player before but it's been TERRIBLE for the last couple of weeks. For the quicklooks I can watch them on youtube so that's ok (even if it's avoiding the issue...).

For premium content however... I'm trying to watch the Unprofessional fridays and out of the 3 options HTML 5 is the only one that let's you skip and jump to the middle right away (I started watching at work and wanted to resume at home) but HTML 5 has a bunch of other issues. For example, if I pause the video will never restart...argh.... piece of crap player, ridiculous. I would watch it on seaserpent but they didn't upload them there.

Did your browser or some other component recently update, Megasoum? It's so weird to me that people will suddenly start having problems from the player out of nowhere. I mean, I could see why it might happen if they were working on the current version of the site (and maybe they are), but I can't even begin to guess what kind of things could contribute to the problem starting.

I'm just hoping it never hits me. : (
