you can describe literally every genre on the planet that way

The vast majority of FPS do not do anything outside of Call of Duty + gimmick X
The vast majority of TPS do not do anything outside of Gears of War + gimmick X
The vast majority of platformers do not do anything outside of Mario + gimmick X
The vast majority of 4X games do not do anything outside of Civilization + gimmick X
The vast majority of RTS games do not do anything outside of Warcraft + gimmick X
The vast majority of JRPGs do not do anything outside of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest + gimmick X
The vast majority of sports games do not do anything outside of Madden + gimmick X
The vast majority of character action games do not do anything outside of God of War + gimmick X

Welcome to the concept of game genres.

However the core mechanics of MMO's have rapidly fell out of favor as evidence by the depleted MMO audience/market. So adding a twist to a maligned core design is less meaningful. This creates a lot of games that people would call mediocre or bad and the genre becomes easy to shrug off by those that feel the core design isn't strong enough to be a foundation for minor gameplay gimmicks.

This is true as well, I feel like they still don't know exactly what they want to focus on in the show, and as a result you get an awkward mix of multiple things (art, science, tech, kids, videogames, etc.) instead of a fluid conversation over one general topic (tech) with occasional side conversations.

I think you are mistaking a lack of focus for what their direction is. They are now a lifestyle website. They position themselves as basically an adult nerd site that talks about shit they think adult nerds would be interested in. Their direction is intentionally broad, which is different from what they were previously when they were specifically a tech site. They stated this change in direction from the beginning, but I think a lot of people just haven't accepted the message. I don't think there is any effort being put into how they can narrow down their coverage and specialize in one thing, they are actively doing the exact opposite. It's completely fair to say that you don't like the new direction, but I think it is just wrong to say they don't have one. Personally I am a lot less interested since the change because tech was what I was interested in(science too, but I preferred science stuff in fake outtakes), I'm not interested in maker-bot/DIY movement, cooking, art, or what have you.

These genre's are not nearly as similar as MMOs have been this generation.

Now that Rorie is there maybe they should. Otherwise they should not bother since "Hey, it's an MMO" argument get's thrown around too much.

Rorie, Rorie! He's our man! If he won't do it....no one will...I guess.

Metro Last Light-Patrick-4/5

Brad + Spiders

cant wait to dig into this after finals week. really enjoyed the fist one

These genre's are not nearly as similar as MMOs anyone outside the genre talks about have been this generation.

The new direction of the site is actually really cool, but the problem is 2 guys are simply not able to handle such a broad spectrum to make it interesting.

If you look at similar sites that cover a wide variety of 'nerd lifestyle', they employ a huge staff to make sure they have a person for every subject. The Verge is massive. Ars Technica has an army of writers. Tested is just 2 guys with no real 'prep team'. This means that unless they're covering something they have a deep personal interest in (like Will with cooking - those videos are awesome), it's really obvious they're faking it.

The reason professional TV hosts are generally able to pull it off, is because they have a bunch of people working behind the scenes to make sure they're prepped for each subject, allowing conversations to appear knowledgeable and insightful.

Eznark in the Tested thread nailed the issue with site in a single line:

I actually absolutely love the general 3D printing discussion, but this is like the 5th time they've brought up Defense Distributed and have not added a single thing to the discussion since the first time.

There is a good reason online publications discovered it was best to find a niche and run with it.

Brad, stop streaming all these DOTA 2 matches. I'm trying to download some vids faster than 100 KB/s.

Brad's thinking about doing something on DOTA. He better slow down, you don't want to overexert yourself.

From the sound of it seems more like he is unsure because he is likely trying to rope in people other than himself, not because he is unsure if he is willing to commit to making the content.

I wonder if Ryan only does one piece of content per month because he has so many awesome ideas but always fails to rope Abraham Lincoln and Shaq into them.

I hope the people that bitch about Ryan not putting up content aren't the same people that bitch about Ryan when he is in content.

Did they say where Ryan and Jeff went this week? Wonder if they'll be on the Bombcast

Ryan Tweeted something regarding a soda machine in a car dealership going crazy and I think I remember him recently talking about getting a new car. So yeah, looks like he just took today off.

Toilets with two flushes are getting more common in the united states, but they're not two seperate buttons, they're usually like a half push of the lever for a small flush and a full push for a full flush.
