Giant Bomb X | Built-In Automatic Death Thing For Secret People

Yelling about manchildren in here might make you feel better but it accomplishes nothing.

Death threats from deranged people are not restricted to females in the games industry. Adam Orth, Brad Wardell, Stephen Toulose, David Vonderhaar and Jeff "8.8" Gerstmann know that, even if you don't. A story on Giant Bomb about the latest person in the gaming industry to suffer from death threats is not going to have any impact at all on the people making these threats. The site that need to act on the abuse is twitter.

Lastly, the idea that Klepeck is worried about offending manchildren is utterly preposterous.

The difference between the men and women in the industry is if a man does something that is deemed controversial he will receive death threats, whereas all a woman has to do is exist. In the past week Alison Rapp of Nintendo talked about a section of a game she enjoyed and received this as a response.

i'm ascribing the "manchild" label to people sending death threats over videogames. thanks, but I'm sure that's an apt description. silly tone policing aside...

why are you comparing individual bursts of internet outrage with a multi-month, organized harassment campaign? i'll put in more simple terms:
how many of these people had to evacuate their homes again?

Oh Look, it's a terrible sexist tweet coming from someone who's twitter handle is from an anime about a woman who is regularly maimed but cannot die. Go figure.

Just for clarity's sake, that is Alison Rapp's twitter username, not the person typing the garbage to her.

So if manchildren refers only to people sending death threats, you actually think Klepeck and the rest of GiantBomb are scared of offending the people who are sending death threats.

Toulouse asked MS for protection after receiving threats directed towards him and his family over a very long time period and eventually quit his job after being told that they would not do so.

You can read about Brad Wardell's experience with death threats where the person knew where he lived here.

http://www.littletinyfrogs.com/article/457347/The_Whos_and_Whys_of_Death_Threats

And you read about the utterly trivial gameplay change that caused a CoD developer to be subjected to death threats here.

I won't speculate as to what they think, since I can't peer inside their minds, but that is definitely the message GB and the gaming press at large is sending out there right now.

as for your links: interesting articles, and i'm still reading one of them, but i don't see how it relates to my point about the organized hate campaign raging on that has managed to push several woman out of their homes and many more out of the gaming industry in the span of 2 months.

I think Giant Bomb as an editorial voice should actively speak out against this sort of thing.

Yes, men get them too. Thank God you were able to remind us of that. Didn't you ask recently for proof that women get worse harassment? Never saw you respond once you were given a bunch of information. If your goal is only to say but men too, well, thank goodness you're able to say that every time the subject of women getting harassed comes up.

What I'll remember the most about Alexis is that he sure loved driving them construction vehicles.

I hope he'll be as happy wherever he's going.

Regarding gamergate, I feel everyone everywhere should just go for it. Most gaming sites have been silent for two months now, it's not helping, it's doing the opposite of helping. Do everything you can to protect yourselves from any backlash and just lay into it. And by that I mean explain using common sense and logic the negative impact ggate is having, what little good has come of it, how inefficient it is, denounce all the bad shit it has caused, those who are complicit, and implore people to bail out, speaking respectfully to them on their own level. Etc. You know, use reason. I want to believe this can be done, and be helpful.

I dunno why, but Alexis has real Thanos eyes going on in this pic. Y'know, void-like eyes that have a glint of light in them for no reason at all. Thanos eyes.

That's always my favorite part of the picture. He looks so impish and evil in it.

I want to know if Jeff is really immune to scary games/movies. Patrick should fly down and do a Spookin' with Scoops special where he tries his best to scare Jeff with video games.

They really need to do a conference stream for the extra life where they blend two couch cams together. One from GBEAST and GBWEST while they play a multiplayer game......maybe Vault of Glass with Vinny, Alex, Jeff, Brad, Dan and Drew.

I can only dream

I'm with Jason Schreier in this regard, I'm not sure if it's a reporter's place to actively denounce things. Articles like that recent Verge one don't seem to serve a purpose and come across preachy and pandering. Those on the side of sanity already know that shit is wrong, and the harassers aren't going to stop because publications are uniting their voices - if anything it'll feed into their deluded fantasy of organised corruption and conspiracy.

I think the best way of handing it is to simply give the victims, targets and marginalised creators a regular voice and platform. Show off their work, write about the difficulties of creating fringe content in a risk adverse industry, find out why they stick with it.

These "harassment is bad, mmmmkay" articles obviously aren't working and the anonymity of the internet isn't going away.

Real change requires publications looking at how they cover the *entire* industry and it may hurt their bottom line. They can't write a dozen articles in a week about the latest braindead AAA shootbang, then wonder why their audience doesn't respond positively to more nuanced and conscience critique or games that don't involve mass murder and sports.

The gaming press need to acknowledge they're partially responsible for creating this insular environment and have profited from it for decades - and a handful of pleas to the community ain't gonna cut it.

Pix the Cat looks really fun, do you guys think it'd be worth it to either a) get PS+ or b) just buy it if I only plan to do the Arcade stuff and not the local co-op? The co-op looks really fun but Im not taking my PS4 anywhere to play with friends.
Get Pix the Cat for the arcade mode and the unlockable puzzle modes and it'll be more than worth it as a single player game.

I don't know how I missed this in all my years of being a GBer, but the Killzone 2 Quick Looks (all three of them) are utterly fantastic in their production values. Kudos to whoever dreamed that magic up.

And I really miss the Random PC game feature.... They're such a blast.

Holy crap, it still looks great for a 5 year old game!

Also, why was Jeff and Ryan playing rock-paper-scissors never made into a gif? That part is hilarious.

Yeah, totally agree. People like Frank Cifaldi with their "IF YOU DO NOT COVER GAMER GATE WITH 20 SCATHING ARTICLES YOU'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM" stance have not helped at all. I think Patrick especially is doing a great job in that regard.

That said, that recent Escapist article about Gamer Gate was just absolutely pathetic, and I hope it blows up in their face even more than it already has. Escapist in general is a pathetic excuse of journalism, and that MALE DEVELOPERS WHO ARE REALLY PART OF THE GAMER GATE MOVEMENT REACTS TO GAMER GATE article was just sad. Good on Jim Sterling for speaking against it.

You know what's an underrated QL? Nail'd.

Really, any time Jeff and Ryan played extreme sports games.

"Come on down to the Diamond Center and get a sale on diamonds. And at the Cow Palace, all these stereos are gonna be on sale" /Smokey salesman voice

mad props to all those who know what QL I'm referring to

I'm going to miss Alexis. He's upbeat, cheerful, and says things that are pornographic that he doesn't usually mean to be pornographic.

I will as well. He kind of took over the Coonce nice guy role when they moved. 'Jeff's playing crappy C64 games by himself? I'll come watch even though no one else is!' guy always seemed down to help.

Alexis always seemed genuinely happy to be there and that was always charming to me. Never forget what he put his body through with those chicken nugs for our (and mostly Ryan's) entertainment. Thank you, Alexis.
