GirlGAF |OT 2| Shall I Compare Thee to a Summer's Eve?

Congratulations!
Thanks! :)
Why the US when she could come to Canada, with our universal health care and legalized gay marriage all over? :D
Or The Netherlands, all that, plus legalised weed and historic centuries old stuff all over the place :D!
Speaking of America, I got my American citizenship today after seventeen years or so.

They gave us a pocket edition of the Constitution and Kark has been following me around the apartment, reading it out loud.

Edit: And just as I wrote this, he turned on "America the Beautiful." <<
Congrats! It must feel so nice to finally be done with all that stuff.

I noticed that other community threads do little questionairres(?) and was wondering if GirlGAF has done that yet? hah.

I can't think of any questions other than generic ones (where are you from, what are your hobbies, favorite video games/genres, etc).. so maybe you all can come up with some if people are interested.

Or this is a dumb idea. lol

For ice-breaker questions, here's a suggested few to start us off. All of these would be optional of course.

Suggested questions:
Where are you from?

~~~
Other questions I had in mind but wasn't sure about:
-Gender
-Cultural heritage
I'm pretty much one of the weirdest people you'll ever meet; I'm very daring, creative and active. I decided when I was younger that if you can't fit in, you might as well stand out. I fancy myself as an iconoclast of sorts as well.
That is awesome. Congrats!
He should play something really patriotic, such as this. ;-p
Thank you! That was a much better rendition of the national anthem than what they played at the ceremony. :p
You know legally, you're supposed to be saluting when that song comes on.
It's not like the government can tell if I don't salute it in my home right? Although Kark is always telling me he's a government informant.
omg grats, pau XD
and kark is so funny ... a true patriot to be sure o7
Thank you. :3
I think Kark overcompensates because his folks are Cuban.
Congrats! It must feel so nice to finally be done with all that stuff.
It definitely is! Especially for my parents, I think, since they've been trying for so many years now. They'd never go back to Colombia to live, so they really consider the USA their home.
I dropped off the application for the US passport and after that comes in, I'll be done with all the paperwork! No more getting held up in airports because people think I'm smuggling drugs or trying to illegally immigrate to their countries! And so many more countries are open to the USA without visas too.
Congrats as well! Sometimes I miss posts because I'm rubbish not because I'm rude!
Ps another question to add would be psn /xbox) steam name, I'd love to play some games with more girls. Boys are ace etc but It nice to have a mix :)
No worries! :p Gracias. :3
I need to get going on that project we've been talking about! I haven't forgotten. I just had a much busier summer than I anticipated. D:
And I agree, we should exchange online name stuff!
I eat it.... once a year maybe. xD You guys have worse stuff, honestly, with your KFC double downs and the like.
Yeah well my autocorrect recognizes poutine (it does not, however, recognize the word "autocorrect", there's a squiggly line underneath it xD). And so does the Merriam Webster! I win!
>.>
I concede to your point about KFC; however ... I happen to have an ace card up my sleeve.
...
We have better internet.
That's right, our internet is much better than yours!
For example, just take this article on the Huffington Post about Canada's wimpy internet speeds:
Canada has some of the slowest internet speeds in the developed world.
Or this article about Canada's abysmal upload speeds:
Nations faster than Canada
Kazakhstan 10.77 Mbps (27th)
Yes, Canada has a slower average upload speed than Kazakhstan. But more importantly, it's slower than the United States of America.
So you can take your legalized gay marriage, universal health care, beautiful scenery, high numbers of diversity, and cheese curds, and stick it where the Sun don't shine!
For ice-breaker questions, here's a suggested few to start us off. All of these would be optional of course.
Where are you from?
I was born in Perth, New York, and lived there for about a year before my parents and I moved to Virginia. I lived in Virginia Beach for about 12 years and spent my childhood there. I moved to Florida and lived there for 5-6 years, then moved to Tennessee and lived there for a few years, and then moved to North Carolina where I currently reside (first Asheville and now Wilmington). Most of my family is from New York, and I have been up and down almost the entire East Coast of the U.S.
What is your age?
I'm 24 (born April 27, 1990).
What are your interests?
My main interests include photography, which I have dedicated a lot of time to, languages, film, discovering new music, fashion design, fine art, writing, philosophy, and video games of course.
Is there anything else you wish to share with us about you?
I have lived a pretty crazy and interesting life. I feel like to share all of it would take up a lot of time, so I guess if I could share anything else it would be that I am a trans woman. I have talked about it a lot on GAF, but it's something that has impacted my life in many ways, both good and bad. It has led to me having to let go of much of the life I previously lived, people I used to know, etc., but at the same time I have gained so much; namely myself, and the love of my life and the most amazing girlfriend I could ask for, June (InfiniteNine here on GAF). I have also gained an even stronger connection with my mother, with all of her amazing support of me and my transition. My father never learned about my being trans, as he passed away before I came out (he passed away a little over a year ago). I don't know how he would have felt about it. But I know he tried many times to have a closer relationship with me, despite all the problems we had (due to his severe alcoholism), so maybe he would have supported me. Either way, my experience with being trans is one that has made me a much more understanding and open-minded person. I feel like despite all the troubles I have dealt with because of it, and I'm sure will continue to have to deal with, it has enriched my life more than I could ever express, and has ultimately made me a much better human being.
-Cultural heritage:
My background is primarily Russian, German/Austrian (more on the Austrian side), English, and Irish. I'm also ethnically Jewish, though I am religiously agnostic.
-List a few favorite video game characters, games, or movies
My favorite video game character is Solid Snake.
My favorite game is Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (surprise surprise).
My favorite movie is City Lights, by Charlie Chaplin.
More (random) facts:
My favorite band is Radiohead.
My favorite solo artist is Kate Bush.
My favorite single piece of music is Bach's Toccata and Fugue.
My favorite genres of music are classical (more specifically baroque), various kinds of pop, rock, and electronic, and jazz.
My favorite book is Anna Karenina, by Leo Tolstoy.
My favorite film directors are Akira Kurosawa and Andrei Tarkovsky.
My favorite works of fine art are Michelangelo's Pieta and Jan Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring.
My favorite color is Prussian Blue.
My favorite food is Italian.
My favorite dessert is tiramisu.
My favorite animal is the Siberian tiger.
My favorite season is autumn.
My favorite memory as a child is waking up on Saturday mornings and watching cartoons, and not having a single worry in the world.
I think it would be good for me to stop there. Sorry for all the text, but I hope this helps shed a bit of light on who I am and my background. ^^
It's so nice to learn more about some of you. There's so much, I don't know what to respond to yet, but I'll re-read some to see if I have anything worthwhile to say. I'll take too long typing this post if I don't get around to posting it already.
Based on the responses, here's a finalized list if Devo or a mod feel like updating the OP with this info.
I don't really have one that I strongly identify with. My mom was adopted, resents her adopted parents, and doesn't have any interest in her birth parents. I barely know anything about my dad's family. My mom was very adamant about all of her kids growing up free to make their own choices free of the biases of our family, and I guess not having a strong feeling of heritage is a side-effect of that.
List a few favorite video game characters, games, movies, or TV shows
games: Metroid, Mother, Blizzard stuff
movies: Alien, The Blues Brothers, Doctor Strangelove, Spider-man 2, Taxi Driver, Moon, too many others to list
TV: Firefly, Breaking Bad, Buffy, DC Animated Universe, Avatar
I was born in Texas and have been raised there for most of my life, but I started school in Ohio and the more northern accent is the one that stuck. I still have a bit of a southern accent on top of that, but it normally only really comes out if I get particularly emotional.
I studied Drawing/Painting and Creative Writing in college. I plan on going back to school one last time in the spring to study Human Factors and Ergonomics.
I became vegan in 2008.
I love punk, post-punk, and early 2000s-era indie rock.
I tend to get addicted to an artist or band for a while. I'm currently hooked on Santigold.
No matter who I'm hooked on at the time, I can always jam to Tegan and Sara, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, or Pixies.
It's amazing reading about you all. What an interesting group of people! And a fantastic idea.
Morrigan, I'm tremendously impressed by your metal website. That's mighty cool.
Pau, don't worry about it. Could you imagine it happening at the same time as this #GAMERGATE palaver?
Where are you from?
Blackpool, England. A faded seaside town with grotty arcades and bags of unemployment.
Where do you live?
Manchester, England's second city.
What is your age?
33.
What are your interests?
Anything and everything really. I play (or used to play) a lot of instruments although now I mostly focus on guitar - and a stylised version of playing - I despise being fluent on the thing. I like to write and work with artists on conceptual pieces. Obviously, I do play an awful lot of video games. I'm fascinated by animal behaviour, I'm passionately against bullying, I love modernist literature and modern art and I'm slowly becoming more and more interested in body modification.
By day, I do the most conservative job in the whole world, ever. Other than maybe actually working for the Tory party / Republican party.
Is there anything else you wish to share with us about you?
Nah, I'm sure it'll come out naturally. I'm a habitual oversharer, especially on the internet.
Gender:
Female, I guess. But I was born confused about my gender and sexuality and I'll probably die confused about my gender and sexuality.
The world sees me as a lesbian, so I guess that would be the box I'd tick.
Cultural heritage
My father is Moroccan, my mother is English. Both are Jewish though, so there's about a million different countries in there somewhere - Spain, Russia, Turkey...
I'm passionately a-religious now though, especially after a rabbi tried to persuade me to go to a camp where they could 'straighten me out' and my father refuses to talk to me because of my sinful ways. Put me on the Christopher Hitchens side of the debate, I'm afraid.
List a few favorite video game characters, games, or movies
Oh dear. Hmmm.
I don't have any favourite videogame characters. My favourite game is Fez - I love how the gameplay mechanics mirror the themes of the story and I adore the soundtrack and design.
Film-wise, I used to love the films of Luis Bunuel but I don't really have any favourites. I really enjoyed There Will Be Blood and The Master, I guess.
Can I list books? My favourite book is James Joyce's Ulysses although I also love Dubliners. I love Samuel Beckett's The Unnameable too. Paul Auster's The New York Trilogy changed my brain for the better, as did Tristram Shandy. Most of all, I love - I mean love - T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land and Four Quartets. I have some recordings of him reading them which I go back to over and over again. Sylvia Plath helped me through some bad times and before I just keep going on and on I'll mention the French-Canadian graphic novel-ist Julie Doucet who is just a genius. I always wanted to be a 'pataphysicist.
Oh and music-wise I'm really fickle. I grew up in a musical household, started on soul music, then to grunge (that was my time! I had the big boots and everything), then rave music, then got into jazz and free jazz in a big way, hip hop. Oh blimey. It's all good to me, I don't really differentiate between genres. Right now, I like Mastodon and Baroness. Tomorrow I'll probably be listening to Lady Gaga or John Cage or something. Oh, I do really, really, really like Olivier Messaien's Quartet for the End of Time (and I know you do too, Jonny Greenwood, yeah I'm pointing at you!).
If you're a parent:
No.
Gah keep forgetting stuff - my PSN is sploatee. Feel free to add, whatever. Happy to game, voice chat / not voice chat, not fussy. Right now I'm playing too much Diablo although I'm planning on giving up the real world for Destiny once it comes out.
Okay, yeah, so I'm half Irish on my dad's side too. XD
Alchoholism runs rampant on my dad's side, so I refused to drink for the longest time, but I've come around. I don't drink very often(I've been tipsy or drunk maybe 3 times in the last year?), but hey, its fun with friends.
Amen!
Gender:
Female, I guess. But I was born confused about my gender and sexuality and I'll probably die confused about my gender and sexuality.
The world sees me as a lesbian, so I guess that would be the box I'd tick.
I didn't list anything about sexuality, but you seem to stand about where I am. I've fallen for a couple of guys, but that's a drop in the bucket compared to my attraction to women. It's easier to say I'm a lesbian and not worry about the fringe cases unless they actually end up meaning something.
As far as the gender thing goes, I'm trans and that fucked my perception of my own gender up bad, especially in high school. Everyone, from friends to family to strangers, thought I was gay, no matter how much I denied it. At the same time, I thought I liked women, but I knew something didn't feel right. So I started becoming paranoid that I was really gay and so closeted that I didn't even realize it. Eventually, I became confident enough in my sexuality, but the gender thing still nagged at me, but I learned to have pride for my femininity. When I was 23, I found the TransGAF thread here, then later that year I found out a coworker was trans and had transitioned. Finally meeting another trans person and being educated enough to dispel the biases set on me by popular culture was enough to make me realize I was trans too. I fully transitioned socially early last year and it's the best thing I've ever done.
SO, tldr, everyone thought I was gay, turns out I was, just not in the way anyone thought(except apparently my parents).
Lol, I meant Fang from FF13, silly me. FF6 is one of my favorite all-time games though and the first Final Fantasy I played.
FF4, 6, 12, and Tactics are amazing. 7 is alright and I like 11, but it isn't really comparable. Outside of that, the series really bores me. I don't even like saying that I like FF despite loving so many games in the series, just because the ones I don't like I *really* don't like.
I can understand that. There's some games in the series I haven't played and some I wouldn't rank as high as others.
My favorite movies are An Education and Pride and Prejudice.
Games that are considered "shitty jrpgs" are the only games I can really get myself invested in since they tend to be so easy. I'm really bad at most games and I have no patience, pretty much the "casual gamer."
Ace Attorney is my favorite video game series.
Right now I'm studying Art History and Museum Professions. I'm trying to be the biggest artsy fart that I can be but I end up sounding like I'm full of shit. Same with a lot of other things I'm interested in general, haha.
When I was 23, I found the TransGAF thread here, then later that year I found out a coworker was trans and had transitioned. Finally meeting another trans person and being educated enough to dispel the biases set on me by popular culture was enough to make me realize I was trans too. I fully transitioned socially early last year and it's the best thing I've ever done.
SO, tldr, everyone thought I was gay, turns out I was, just not in the way anyone thought(except apparently my parents).
I'm glad you're in a good place :)
I've always been a bit of a misfit. I was basically celibate / asexual until my early twenties and although id been with a guy here and there (and liked it) I just ended up falling in love with another girl and that was 11 years ago :) I just don't like being labelled at all. I just sort of manage to stay alive and take it from there.
I have quite a crush on femmy guys but I'm only window shopping really. I love my Emma :)
My favorite video game genre is RPG, but I'll play anything that seems interesting to me.
Favorite games are Chrono Trigger and Suikoden II. I like most of the Final Fantasy games to varying degrees, but I especially loved FF6-8,12, & Tactics.
I mostly listen to pop and alternative rock. I don't really care about lyrics, so songs in foreign languages are fine with me.
I currently have two cats (my dog passed away this year).
I have dyscalculia (like dyslexia but for math).
I browse GAF more than I actually post, even though I've had this account for years. lol
PSN/Xbox/Steam name, etc.
I'm not really active on any of them, but my Steam name is: zombiefunfair. My 3DS friend code is in my GAF profile as well.
I missed the gaming thingy too, so here's my info~
PSN: SpaceKathryn (this is where I'm most active atm)
Steam: Space Kat (will be more active once I have a gaming PC)
NNID: SpaceKathryn
3DS friend code: 4425-1487-6455
The Nintendo stuff I access once every few centuries, but I'm there if you'd like to add me. :p
Wait, what's wrong with Muse? I like Muse... D:
Hysteria and Map of the Problematique are my favorite songs from them.
I really like Muse! I have listened to Origin of Symmetry a lot. I'd say my favorite track by them is "Plug In Baby."
Morrigan Stark
Arrogant Smirk
Oh here are my gamertags (you will note a pattern of brilliant originality). Feel free to add me but if possible send a message saying who you are, sometimes I get requests from randoms and I have no idea who they are xD just saying "hello from GAF" is fine.
PSN: MorriganStark
XBL*: Morrigan Stark
Steam: MorriganStark
NNID: MorriganStark
* (Never play online on the 360 anymore, didn't want to pay for XBLG, but I still play Dark Souls on GFWL sometimes, so if you play Dark Souls 1 on PC, feel free to add me there.)
Morrigan, I'm tremendously impressed by your metal website. That's mighty cool.
Thank you. It's probably my greatest life achievement... lol, that's actually kinda sad. But yeah I'm proud of it.
By day, I do the most conservative job in the whole world, ever. Other than maybe actually working for the Tory party / Republican party.
Now I'm intrigued. You're a priest/nun? Or a... nascar racer? xD
I'm passionately a-religious now though, especially after a rabbi tried to persuade me to go to a camp where they could 'straighten me out' and my father refuses to talk to me because of my sinful ways. Put me on the Christopher Hitchens side of the debate, I'm afraid.
Wow that sucks, I'm so sorry to hear that. Unrepentant atheist here too. *sisfist*
I don't like their output lately except for Survival whose lyrics are so cheesy I can't help but love. They started losing me with The Resistance but I loved their previous albums.
I can't decide between Ruled by Secrecy and Sing for Absolution. I'm a sucker for their piano heavy songs.
Wooooooow you girls are awesome and amazing interesting people!!!
