For gals losing weight: I'm trying to lose at least 10 pounds (15 ideally) since January and my goal is to be 110 pounds by April (I'm 127 now). Throughout my life I've always been 105-110, so to see myself heavier, especially after some lifestyle changes, is kinda disheartening. Now, like I said I started to lose weight since January, and to do so I've been counting calories (1300-1400 a day) and going to the gym 3 times a week. I'm a really impatient person, so what's been driving me crazy is when you can actually see results, because I know I've been the same weight since I started a month ago.

I don't want to go to FitGAF about this because the last time I did they were really just straightforward without some valuable advice, especially trying to get fitness advice for a woman since it I've been told is a lot trickier. I think the question I'm trying to ask here is if it's doable to lose my goal by my end date, or if I should expect a longer period? Are there things I should absolutely avoid eating? Should I add extra days to the gym? Or if I'm just doomed because after turning 22 all of a sudden my body wants to gain weight instead of staying consistent like it always has been (which is a curse from genetics I guess)?

I've always been insecure about my body, but never about my weight, so the combination of the two hasn't helped my self esteem for the past couple of months since moving to a city. I just want to go back to the 20-year-old me :(

Avoid the carbs like the plague

When I was losing weight, I lost about 35 in 4-5 months, and it was avoiding carbs, and eating very strictly.

Three portions of protein a day, three portions of veggies a day, that's it.

I'd love to be 127 though :p I'm hovering between 135-140 depending on what I eat, and I need to get strict as hell again, but I'm having terrible will power right now.

Well, that was his opinion (that it wouldn't work) and then he spoke to the specialist who basically said "sure why not", so...eh. :(

But yeah...I don't think I want to chance it making my hair fall out and then not come back :(

Hi Leeness, I've just seen your posts about your hair and was hoping maybe I could help.

Over the past few years I was having a lot of problems with my hair falling out. The worst was when I stopped taking my birth control pill for a while and it started coming out in clumps. It was extremely scary and I was very depressed when it happened.

I talked to my doctor about it but also took matters into my own hands, and here are some of the things that helped for me:

 1. If you're on any type of hormonal birth control, try switching to something new. After the ordeal where my hair came out in clumps, my gynecologist switched me to a minipill with a lot less hormones in it. Just this simple fact helped a lot!
 2. After I had blood work done, my doctor found out that I had some deficiencies that could have been contributing to my hair loss: iron deficiency and B vitamins deficiency. I began taking supplements to correct this including regular shots for the B12 deficiency. While I didn't notice my hair "thicken up", so to say, I noticed that it was a lot less brittle and didn't break as easily.
 3. You'll find people with different opinions about silica's effects on hair, but I found it did have an effect on mine! Try drinking bamboo tea, which is full of silica, once a day for a while and you might notice some results!
 4. Hair / nails multivitamins. I currently take Phytophanere. It's expensive, but you can often get it on sale online. I'm sure there are cheaper alternatives too; it contains vitamin A, B vitamins, omega 3 & 6, and vitamin C.
 5. Changing my diet really has an effect on my hair. Eating more protein and vitamin-rich foods helped a lot (I used to have a terrible diet, as evidenced by my various deficiencies).
 6. Try changing to a shampoo that doesn't contain silicones. I'd had no idea that the silicones in my shampoo were weighing down my fine, wispy strands and possibly even damaging them!
 7. DRY SHAMPOO. Seriously. Once you find your holy grail dry shampoo, it will change your life. Just I few years ago I could never have left the house without washing my hair, and just a few hours later my fine strands would be limp and stringy. Now, because my hair is in such better shape, if I spritz it with just a little dry shampoo it gets insane, long-lasting volume that looks natural! I don't have a lot of hair, but when I use the dry shampoo it looks like I do! I like Batiste XXL Volume or Klorane Dry Shampoo with Nettle.
 8. Last but not least, acceptance. I slowly learned to accept that I don't have a thick, luscious head of hair and never will, and I'll never have the same type of hair I had in high school -- and that's okay! I'm making sure my hair is healthy and strong, and at the end of the day that's the best thing you can do for it!

It was a long journey for me to get my hair back into the condition it is now. It isn't perfect, but I feel much more confident than I did just a few years ago. Don't give up!

How tall are you? 127 pounds isn't big at all.

That said I've never tried to lose weight ever, so I can't be of much help anyway...

5'2". I'm definitely not overweight but the extra pounds I gained definitely look visible. I didn't look too thin either when I was 110.

Yeah I've been avoiding carbs for the past two years, but I definitely cheated the 5 months since I moved to Chicago. The hardest thing is when I'm taken out with friends or my boyfriend, and it's a sandwich (or recently, deep dish pizza) place. There's not much options for me on the menu and I don't want to be that person who orders a salad at a burger joint :(

Thanks H, this is all good advice :) will definitely try some of those out

Sure thing. Just entertain happy thoughts, and every time you choose the sweet potato fry option be like, fuck yeah! +10 pts to the effort! :D

Boo for weight stress! For dieting, I always found that depriving myself of carbs just made me miserable and that made me sad/depressed which seemed to inhibit weight loss. As much as I hear the logic is to cut out foods if you really want to lose weight, that never worked for me, so I just said fuck it and drank beer and had fun. And weight came off...*
(*YMMV)

However! An easy cut is liquids. Do you drink soda/milk/juice, etc.? If you do, those are what I found made a noticeable difference, and coupled with 'penalty' workouts, helped shed a bit of noticeable weight.

Basically, replace those liquids with water/tea/coffee (no adding sugar to the coffee or tea! Milk OK, though, TBH), and attach 15-25 squats to something you do several times a day. It can be silly stuff like swearing or every time you get a text from someone or just a timer on your phone, but whatever and whenever, you have to stop and do squats. BOOM. Sugar/calories OUT, squat queen thighs IN.

I haven't drank soda in years and I never drink milk :/ for juice I've starting making my own smoothies, but otherwise I haven't been drinking that either. My only downfall in terms of liquids is alcohol, and it's either wine or gin tonics. I'm wondering if I should cut down my intake for that >_<

I'm kinda okay with my thighs thankfully 🌚 But I'll still try doing that!! It's definitely part of my routine when I go to the gym.

I don't really drink much so cutting out soda has done wonders for me. Still a little pudgey in the tummy though but that might just be me not being consistent with exercise for the most part.

Abs are made in the kitchen!

While technically it is possible to work away those last pounds of that spare tire, we're talking about hours of strenuous activity every day.

I will look for better shampoos and dry shampoos. I've kind of tried a lot of supplements already so I think it's past that for help. I will also look for bamboo tea!

Acceptance is hard though :( It makes me sad all the time. I've never had full hair, so it's just a constant "ugh" for me.

This is a pretty good idea, and might actually be something I have the willpower to do. I have a reeeeeally hard time controlling what I eat, to the point that I will wake up at 5am and eat cookies in a stupor and fall back asleep. My asleep brain wants me to be hefty :|

One thing we've been doing is limiting eating at restaurants to once a week. I've only lost five pounds since January but it's something. D:

I've long since stopped drinking soda, and the only alcoholic drinks I take have been ciders. These days, I usually take orange juice or tea.

We try not to order out often, but when we do I've been just ordering appetizers instead of a big entree :p

Love cider but had to start avoiding that too because it makes me bloat. I'll still have it on rare occasions, and with soda I'll usually take a sip of my boyfriend's if I don't have water nearby.

For me it was really difficult to accept because I used to have really thick, pretty effortless hair... they always say you don't know what you've got til it's gone, and that is so much the truth. I'm pretty sure I actually went through a period of mourning for my hair! :(

Today was actually a difficult day for me. I washed my hair in the morning and a ton of strands just kept coming out over and over while I rinsed... then, later at work, I kept finding countless strands on my clothing, all over the floor around my chair, etc. Like I was shedding. Very frustrating. I've not been feeling well, so I think it may have to do with that. Looking to eat lots of hair-healthy foods on the weekend and drink lots of tea to boost my spirits :)

I hope you find something that helps you, and let me know if you ever need to just vent about it!

I've never had thick hair. Always thin and limp and gross :( I'm just jelly every day haha.

Ugh! I know that feel! I had a break down a month or two ago because my hair got so tangled (looking at it makes it tangle) that I ended up having to pull all the tangles out and it legit filled the bottom of a waste basket. :( It was horrifying.

I bought that Batiste XXL dry shampoo haha. I will try it in the morning tomorrow! I don't know if dry shampoo fits in my daily routine most of the time (shower and wash hair every weekday morning before work) but I'll see how it goes!

I hope your weekend of relaxation and tea does you well :')

The tampon tax thread, holy shit... xD

Just for kicks I asked my boyfriend, "Do you know what menstrual blood is? Why women menstruate?" And he answered correctly! When I said "yay good job" he was all "well c'mon I did have a basic biology class in school y'know!", then he was dismayed to hear about the widespread ignorance in that thread.

Yeah, kind of unbelievable / hilarious.

I remember being kind of shocked at my boyfriend not knowing the difference between tampons and pads, but that was when we first started dating and he was like 16. No excuse for grown men.

I had a fun time reading posts from that thread out loud to my sister.

I wish the female reproductive system worked like it did in some of those guys' minds. Birth control pills automatically take away your period*? You can hold in the blood flow the same way you can with pee? You don't bleed enough to have it go through your underwear and pants? You can wear one pad or tampon for 24 hours without serious consequences? If only!

*Okay the first one, actually I don't want my period taken away because I like getting it every month and knowing I'm not pregnant. :p

I wish guys actually took the BC to know what it actually does to your menstrual cycle.

Not so related, but I was off BC for a couple of months and back on it right now, and my period is so much more manageable. It's normally really heavy, but with the pill it's super light and less messy. Bless Planed Parenthood for hooking me up with pills even though my health insurance doesn't work in Illinois.

There are the pills which will reduce you to four periods a year, or you could stack the normal pills (I've done this for trips).

*Okay the first one, actually I don't want my period taken away because I like getting it every month and knowing I'm not pregnant. :p

If you use something that could eliminate your periods (like depo or IUD's), they tell you to take regular pregnancy tests.

I once attempted birth control to delay a single period so that I wouldn't come on during a holiday overseas, but the attempt backfired spectacularly and I ended up with a period lasting more than two weeks. >_>

I'm on it again now though in the long-term, and it seems to be helping to make my periods both lighter and shorter (even though the first period went for about two weeks like before).

Edit: I may eventually get a Mirena instead of the pill though. It seems a lot more convenient.

Yeah, I don't do it with any kind of frequency, so it didn't eliminate it completely, just delayed it. Lasted longer too.

Don't forget that you'll lose your job if you don't wear deodorant to work, but you can probably get away with no pad/tampon/etc.

Especially if you're a trapper!

There was also a guy in another thread shocked that periods last longer than a day. I'm in awe of the ignorance.

I'm not too surprised. A lot of boys and girls are never educated well enough on the inner workings of the opposite gender's body when growing up outside of the incredibly basic sex education that schools offer and that doesn't go anywhere near in-depth enough into all the intricacies and ins-and-outs of both the male and female body and sexual organs. And of course that lack of education and knowledge often breeds a lack of interest in the opposite gender's biology as we often can't relate to each other in that respect, heck, It wasn't until a few years ago that I myself bothered to look into how the penis works, it's absolutely fascinating how all that stuff down there works, and just how complicated it really is! Just as fascinating as our own body!

second one is too red cant see anything

third one makes your head looks small compared to your body

maybe do the smile like in third but with the first's pose
