Maybe I should cover myself in pepper so you get a sneezing fit!

When I was younger I went to the same hairdresser as my mum because she owned her own business and kept her prices at a nice level. But I stopped anything needing regular maintenance for awhile.
Then I started working at a salon, and there were plenty of hairdressers who were willing to experiment on me in their downtime. That's when I decided to go red; red is the toughest color to maintain and get consistent. But I quickly realized that my mums hairdresser was not great. So I had a long relationship with one of the ladies at that salon even after I changed jobs, until I quit dyeing my hair. That was about $80/month bill there.
Now I have no bangs and no (artificial) color, and keep it long. My sister in law cuts it about once or twice a year. It doesn't get much damage because I use no heat and no products. When I need it neat, I brush and put it up in about 30 seconds. Less effort than short hair.
For picking a hairdresser, you need one with enough experience with your ethnicity of hair. There really is a different way of treating, cutting, and styling.
yesh. a hairdresser is a serious relationship. and your hair ritual sounds like mine a lot. i also dont use any heat or products so most of the year my hair is a happy hair. the only thing i hate about having it long is the strands in the shower's drainage is gross and like a horror story from a ghost movie :x
other than that, it's actually less maintenance than short hair
