Great reviews! I'm tempted to get a ps 5 just for this. As an xbox owner I'm quite dissatisfied whit the game output of my console of choice this year.
Xbox is a great console with a great subscription model that makes it even more desirable. But Phil Spencer needs to pull his head out of his ass and prove that Xbox can stand on their own providing games worthy of the console. After many years of waiting, there is still a lack of really good 1st party games. I can't believe that even with the acquisitions, there has not been a lot of must play game announcements. I have a Series X & PS5. I love the Series X but I love Sony Exclusives more!

Both rag and ring will win plenty of GOTY awards too bad they'll both lose to SIFU 😃.....Playstation had an awesome year btw

The key difference being that the first two God of War games released on the same console.

Ragnarok is what we are getting instead of a game designed from-the-ground-up for PS5. In that light, it’s sort of disappointing.
Imagine if Mario 64 had to run on Super Nintendo.

It really depends on how you look at it, but its fair for people to want more than extra frames and resolution when they pay $500 for a new console. They want games that take full advantage of the hardware.

God of War didn’t do anything wrong, but it looks bad on Sony, who were just touting how they were the group to go with if you “believe in generations”.
Then two years in, the next entry in the beloved God of War franchise, is restricted to being a PS4 game with extra bells and whistles.

What might have helped is not announcing the game at their PS5 reveal event, with no indication that it was designed for PS4, but that’s just a guess.

Hey, this game looks to be a ton of fun. So again, I don’t want to throw shade at the game. I do want to hold Sony accountable for their messaging and general decision making.
We should be playing PS5 games by now. They’ve said as much.
Man, Gow3 was such an awe inspiring game but tbh Cory did the same thing and made gow2 on ps2 despite the first one releasing around the same time as the ps3 reveal at e3. Devkits were out. Insomniac, nd, incognito, kojipro and ninja theory were all hard at work on ps3 games but Cory comes along and makes it a ps2 game. Great game that was nonetheless overshadowed by next Gen games like halo 3, bioshock, mass effect, and uncharted. This time he got lucky and had no next Gen competition.

What people dont realize is that even if GOW Ragnorak is a great GOTY contender, it basically means this great studio wont have a next gen game until 2027. Probably 2028. Yeah, the optics are bad for Sony. Yeah, the game will win awards. Yes, the game will still be a great game, but it wont change the fact that SSM wont be ready for next gen until the very end of this gen. And for fans of this studio and this franchise, and people who truly believe in Cerny's mission statement for the PS5, it is a massive disappointment.

Dang, I was expecting high 80 or low 90's. I knew the game would be super polished and fun, but thought it may be a little derivative. 94 is super impressive.

At this point it's not important which game will win GOTY. What's important is that the game turned out to be so good that it's considered one of the very few contenders. How wonderful would be to have many same high quality level games every year, so good that it's difficult to predict which one will win?

This is why everyone should refrain from even bothering to engage with these people. They literally don't care about the quality of their gaming experience, that's been proven too many times in recent history.

I don’t think he even pays for some of it.

Fuck, I just remembered that Callisto is releasing next month !!!
And I have yet to play A Plague Tale Requiem and The Last of Us Part 1.

I'll be playing Ragnarok day one though :messenger_sunglasses:

Impressive scores, i expected that, even a bit higher actually, but still a GOTY contender.

I wonder why Metacritic didnt add the controversial IGN Korea review.

Which PS4 and Xbox One games could not have existed on PS3 or 360?
Since PS3 and 360 had good CPUs, compared to the shitty CPUs of PS4 and XOne, every single game would have been possible, just reducing rendering detail accordingly. But every game design we saw is possible on both gens.
Current gen from this point of view is a novelty. Aside cross gen games or current gen only games developed with old style game designs, the I/O possibilities of current gen can allow any form of game design, any level design, any set piece, even continuously changing environments and game play styles on the fly. And for that, graphical detail reduction would not be enough (unless you reduce it so much to be able to have the entire game into RAM, so that you have access to any game data in the blink of an eye - but that's not acceptable for marketing, so...).

What glorious (and expected!) news to wake up to! PlayStation stay winning, only a few days left boys and tonight I bathe in salty tears! 🥳🥳🥳

Nah, too many to name.

That’s the whole point of new console generations.
Just name one or two.

There's no reason why they couldn't release Ragnarok on PS3. Why couldn't they?

But they won't for obvious reasons - it wouldn't sell. Very few people still have the PS3 hooked up, still game and don't have a PS4 or PS5.

But, IF it made financial sense, of course they could put it on that platform at a lower resolution, framerate, etc.

That's exactly why The Witcher 3 is on Switch - something people thought was impossible. It made financial sense, so they figured it out.

94 on Metacritic. Wow. I was planning on working on my backlog and fussing with more Steam Deck customization, but I'll be dropping those to snag this one day one.

Witcher 3 came out two years before Switch. It’s the same generation. Switch was Just slightly underpowered compared to the contemporary competition of the time.

Ragnarok running on PS3 sounds ridiculous. Two generations later without using the power at your hands to innovate the design of the game would be a massive waste of potential.

But since it already seems to be a PS4 game, as opposed to a PS5 game, I mean… yeah, maybe it could run on PS3 with just complete crap performance, idk.
Sad to think about.

Last one, I promise.
Lets stop quoting this clown.

OT: Reviews looking darn great. And considering its an entry from an already established IP and a non Nintendo made franchise.. its surprising it managed to match the score from previous (brilliant) game.

Can't wait, bring on the 9th.

The PS3 has a fraction of the RAM for a start. (Much slower RAM too) So no, it's highly unlikely you'll get it running by just dropping the resolution.

If you want some examples of games, let's look at these two.

Killzone Shadowfall
Shadow of Mordor

"But wait" I hear you typing. "We had FPS games on the PS3 and Shadow of Mordor did get a PS3 port".

True. But the thing is I believe you're misunderstanding the argument. It's not that developing exclusively for next gen consoles will suddenly lead to new genres appearing left and right. It's that it will lead to gameplay improvements.

Let's looks at a simple example from Killzone. In that game you controlled a drone by swiping on the touchpad to give it different orders. Obviously there was no touchpad on the PS3 controller. So to get it working you now how to have to implement a new more convoluted control scheme to get around the lack of inputs available.

The PS3 version of Shadow of Mordor was infamous for having a dumbed down Nemesis system compared to the newer gen versions.

"Ok" you might be thinking. "But that still shows that they could scale the gameplay down to work on older consoles".

Sure. The thing is developers will very rarely take that approach. (As you can see from most of the cross gen games we've seen recently). The idea of cross gen is to gain some extra sales from PS4 users for minimal extra cost. Once you get into changing base gameplay elements between the two versions, the extra work isn't worth it. (Where as just scaling the visuals and performance up from the baseline spec is pretty easy in comparison).

Edit: On topic: Great review scores as expected, can't wait to pick this up.

Torn between this and Sonic Frontiers. I don't know whats wrong with me lol
WTF lol.. As much as you may love Sonic, I don't think there is really a comparison.

If you can only buy one, it's nicer to experience GOW when everyone else is without seeing spoilers and discussion etc. After it releases. Or just buy both!

Dude, Frontiers looks like big doo-doo. I would definitely hold off and wait for impressions on that one.

I'm just letting my freak flag fly, dawg. 😀 totally agree though, not buying that one without a review.

These reviews for God of War are insane.
