Godzilla |OT| Oh No, There Goes Tokyo!

I've been watching the GiantBomb, GameTrailers, and Jim Sterling videos of this game and boy, it seems like they went in expecting to hate it. Except for the guy playing it in the GT video no one bothered to learn the game, no one has even more than a passing knowledge of Godzilla. It's honestly a bit frustrating seeing these noobs play the game.

There are plenty if legitimate criticisms of course, but it'd like these people didn't even give a damn to try the game and instead exaggerated the bad for views.

If you wanna see someone who really cares about Godzilla play the game, watch the Super Best Friends Play video on it. Matt LOVES Godzilla, and their video is the only one I chose to watch before purchasing.

I really enjoy King of Kaiju mode the most but this game really needs some form of difficulty setting other than the branching paths in God of Destruction mode. Overall, I like the game but I feel it needs more substance. Something else to it. It's great for huge fans of Godzilla and feel it has some amazing potential. Destroying the cities are cool but I feel forced to decimate the city 100% which becomes tedious. Fighting the other Kaiju is cool but I can get through King of the Kaiju with ease. Unless it pits you against monsters you've already unlocked (which seems to be true), I haven't unlocked every monster so maybe the others are harder? I'm not really a multiplayer guy so being able to just fight the CPU like in Destroy all Monsters Melee or Save the Earth would have been cool.

I hope this gets a sequel with hopefully more gameplay added to it.

Is there a secret to getting him to appear? I've gotten him on the first mission, but that's about it

Get your destruction into the 50 or 60 percent area and just run like hell to destroy the generators and he'll appear. Areas 1, 7, and 16 are the places he'll appear if I remember right.

Don't destroy the whole city. The difficulty is directly tied to how big you are, for better or for worse. If you start grinding, you'll have a way easier time down the road save for a few random fights.

Where can I find Mecha-King Ghidorah and Destoroyah? I want to try and unlock them today, have had no luck so far.

I see Mecha-King Ghidorah usually near the end of the easy path. Destroyah I think shows up midway through, but he's always a 100m monster I believe.

Thanks. And to answer why do people like Kiryu so much, it's just a slick modern design. Always thought it was a very cool looking mech. My favorite MechaGodzilla is Super MechaGodzilla because I had toys of that design growing up, and I like the bulk.

So the difficulty is based on growth? Good to know. Destroying the areas to 100% unlocks the bases. Even though I rarely use diorama mode I still want to unlock them. I guess I can just go back later and do that. I've done it for most of the easy and normal areas anyway.

I'm fairly certain Kiryu is the second to last stage on the hard path? I know the second to last stage on the easy path is Super MechaGodzilla (and sometimes w/ Rodan as well), I've only done the complete hard path once and I fought Kiryu there.

On that note - why do people love Kiryu so much? I like the monster but he's my least favorite MechaGodzilla.

Basically. The bigger you are, the more damage you'll do. Sure, they send out more army related things, but that just increases your score and extends your Rage meter more. After three levels, if you focus on getting big, you'll likely be bigger than most monsters, even on Hard.

On the flipside, if you just go after generators and leave it at that, you'll likely be smaller and have to watch what you do. Bio, for example, is absolutely broken, and when she gets huge she has insane reach.

If she's not big, though, her attacks do nothing, and she has to rely on pushing people out with the underground tentacles and and triangle attacks. Acid shower also becomes a better option once you realize hitting R2 and flailing around won't do much damage and instead put you in a horrible position.

It's still an easy game, but at least the balance is better if you don't destroy it all. I'd suggest getting the dioramas last if you are getting burnt out.

Lol so the military can't really harm you? That's what I thought.

They can. I had one game where Mecha-King Ghidorah died because a tank shot him out of the air. The military just doesn't do that much damage to you and you'll never really notice it unless a Kaiju or Super-X puts you at low health.

This game is getting critically panned. But I imagine it could totally be a hilarious, fun romp like Earth Defence Force or something.

You a fan, GAF? Is my analysis above correct?

Not really, just finishing stages ASAP while also getting at least 50% destruction. I had a Stage 7 run go on for barely over 3 minutes and it didn't give me the Jet Jaguar spawn, so perhaps I was just over? We'll probably have to test and see.

You are also able to get at least one Jet Jaguar in Invade mode in the later stages. I had a 100m one pop up while doing a Biollante run.

Got the game Monday , played about 2 hours so far.
And yes this game is like EDF, mindless fun, you can destroy everything I really enjoy it .

It's pretty much what I was expecting I am not disappointed .

BUT anyone else think the price is way too high for this game on the PS4 ?

Considering that it is Godzilla and it likely had a pretty limited print run, I think the price is fine.

If it were a digital-only release, I think it'd probably have been lower and reviewed a bit less harshly.

It's really hard to hit, i also find it the toughest. I really wish it actually had the Super X theme when it came into battle instead of that generic one. Would have been so much more hype.
yup. the 1984 OST is great and has some of my favorite tracks from the series. Some of it has even got Joe Hisaishi vibes going. Maybe they didn't have the rights to use it given Return of Godzilla's messy US distribution situation?

The Super X theme is really awesome but at the same time it almost feels out of place within Return of Godzilla's soundtrack. It's almost too upbeat and cheery for a soundtrack that is mostly dark/haunting. On that note, goddamn I want more Godzilla movies that have Return's tone.

This game has the same problem I found with Xenoverse, and that is tying drops to random events that aren't 100% guaranteed to happen even if you check the required boxes. I love the gameplay but I hate having to fight an RNG for progress. Its just too much like Destiny in that respect

Yeah, I'm thinking it a licensing issue. Probably the same thing preventing the movie from being released on DVD and Blu-Ray :/

Amen.

Probably because he got the most modern design of all the Mechagodzillas. Kiryu is pretty cool in my book, but I didn't like that they tried to make him more realistic with requirements for power sources and him constantly shutting down. I still like the Showa one the best, especially the 75 design even though he didn't do as much in that movie.

The Heisei one is the worst one for me since it's pretty boring to watch, and it's face looks derpy.

I also always liked Mechagodzilla better when he's a villain.

70s MechaGodzilla is best MechaGodzilla. 74 MG was a badass. He turned godzilla into a blood geyser for fucks sake and it took 2 monsters to take him down. Kiryu always felt like a knock off, but I'm not a big fan of the millennium series anyway.

I'm finally putting some time into 74 MG and his moveset is true to the movie, I love it.

I just need to get all of the base (I think the bottom two final hards are all I need), get Jet Jaguar 3 times, unlock all figures, and max out all monsters.

I can't leave a game sitting at 85% when the other trophies aren't hard to get.

How different do Mecha Godzilla and Mecha Godzilla 2 play from one another? Seems kind of redundant to have both of them since the designs are almost identical. When Super and Kiryu are also in.

Hedorah was a mistake. It's nothing but trash.
This may be the funniest one of these I've seen.

No difference that I can find except apparently MG2's head can come off. I think it was a cost saving thing. I'd rather have (in this order) Megalon, Orga, King Caesar, Titanosaurus, or Monster X instead of MG2. Oh well, I hope this game sold well enough to justify DLC or a sequel.

I haven't spent a ton of time with 2 but he feels faster. He gets his finger missile attack off more quickly and has a stronger version with back+∆. That said, his spinning head shield doesn't last as long. His roar+O attack feels exactly the same

Edit: was wrong about the speed.

I find it hard to play with Godzilla only after getting to use the other kaiju ~_~ Feels like all the stages take forever as Godzilla.

The lack of Orga in this game made me watch Godzilla 2000. Man, that movie does not hold up well 15 years later in the effects department. The saving grace of the movie is the music though, the final battle basically has Shadow of the Colossus styled music with it and it works pretty well.

Probably because he got the most modern design of all the Mechagodzillas. Despite having the derpy face I think Heisei MechaGodzilla is probably my favorite one. I like the mix up of him now being a Japan defender instead of an invader like his Showa counterpart was. I also like his origin in this one - being reverse engineered future tech from Mecha King Ghidorah. Showa MechaGodzilla is a very very close second though, that one is boss as fuck. I really wish his swag swing jazz theme would play when he shows up.

It's those intro/outro cutscenes, man. Those make it feel like it's dragging on.

Hedorah was a mistake. It's nothing but trash.

Looking at the Mecha Godzilla and Mecha Godzilla 2 movelists, one has rotating finger missiles while the other has a beam sweep. Otherwise they're basically identical. Kind of weird to think about the roster before all these ~popular~ additions in the PS4 version.

I played some more tongight and I think this game is growing on me. I've unlocked several more monsters. I still wish it had more content but I still feel it's underrated. I do think it was overpriced but I'm glad I got it and the poster. I thought you needed to find all the data to fight the final boss? I didn't find all of it in every area yet but I managed to fight
Godzilla 2014
as the final boss.

the rotating finger missiles are a great stagger ability, you can cheese the AI to death if you get them stuck in a corner. 2 would be better overall if not for the reduced shield. As it stands, they're about equal IMO. 1 is better short range, 2 for long

Megalon is the only one I really feel is missing from the roster, although those others would be good to see as well. Overall I do have to say that this is probably the most complete and accurate cast in an "All Star" style game.

You need 50% intel to unlock the 4 lead up missions to the final sequence and be over 100m to play the final mission.

I was kind of surprised that the final boss of the game was
Godzilla 2014
, I kind of figured it would have been
Keizer Ghidorah
. Although a really awesome throwback to an older Godzilla video game would have been to make the final boss

100% data collection is only required to unlock all of the kaiju guide. Two easy trophies though as long as you remember to get the data and then read/select all the entries at some point.

Yeah, having Megalon in a relatively small cast of Destroy All Monsters Melee really set him up as an "essential" monster to me, despite not being in anything after GvMegalon.

That's exactly what you'll get with this game.

Man the last Godzilla game I played was the NES one and it was glorious. This is what that reminds me of after watching bunch of vids including the ones recorded by members here. :D
