Once a got a compatible controller setting (that custom setting for wiimote/nunchuck that was posted was a godsend) that felt right, the game became "golden" :D

CC man, I know I've probably missed out because I didnt take time to customize the controls (I wanted to play! that very same moment!) and the Classic controller worked awesomely. Also, gave me a Goldeneye 64 vibe

Play through a second time with the wiimote. Take the time to tweak lol. Start from "Experienced 3" and go from there, or follow the guide earlier in the thread.

Hey guys, bought a red Wii yesterday, pretty much for my bro for Christmas. Neither one of us has Wii experience. My brother does love the original Goldeneye and Perfect Dark.
Please be honest.

1. Is this a good game to get for him? I already spent lots of money, so I am debating what extra game to get. If you liked the original, will you like this one? (So many games to catch up on that I really don't know what to get, haha)

2. There won't be any online hooked up, so is online a big factor for purchase?

3. Saw some people hating on the wii controls. I REALLY don't want to spend more money for the classic controller. Is the game still good with the normal controls? (where is this custom setting for the controls posted?)

4. Bonus question. Should I buy the component cables? We will be gaming on a 50" LCD. Will the cables make a big difference?

1. It's great. It's very much like the original, but still fresh enough to stand on it's own without the nostalgia factor. If Goldeneye N64 never came out, this would still be a fantastic game.

2. Haven't played online yet. I'm enjoying it in single player though.

3. I only play with the motion controls. It controls great, and you can customize them. I don't like the classic controller for FPS games because the weight of it feels off. Plus pointer controls are just fun.

4. Get the components. They are super cheap on Amazon. I have components hooked up to my LCD monitor and the Wii looks great. The only thing you should know is that Wii games won't fill up the whole screen, there will be little black bars on either side of the screen.

Most games (including Goldeneye) fill up the whole screen on a 16:9 TV - maybe your monitor is 16:10?

I think it depends on what you liked from the first one, it changes a lot of the core mechanics and to me for the better, but some old school fans won't like.
That said, this is easily, hands down the best James Bond game in existence.

There's still a pretty solid off-line campaign and several difficulties with more objectives.

3. Saw some people hating on the wii controls. I REALLY don't want to spend more money for the classic controller. Is the game still good with the normal controls? (where is this custom setting for the controls posted?)
I think it depends on your level of comfort with a dual analog setup, I think most people who actually embraced the Wii set-up prefer it.

4. Bonus question. Should I buy the component cables? We will be gaming on a 50" LCD. Will the cables make a big difference?
Yes

I have a samsung plasma. I switch to component cables from monoprice, but I honestly don't see that huge of a difference between component and composite. Am I doing something wrong?

You gotta get the online hook-up, not just for this game but for some great wiiware stuff (like bit.trip.runner) - no online and you're missing some great Wii games.

No, you aren't. The problmen is that you're only going from 480i to 480p. Fucking Wii hardware :( If only they'd also taken advantage of 720p and 1080p.

I haven't had a chance to try the classic controller in GoldenEye, but the regular controls are fine in my experience so far; however, if he has old Gamecube controllers lying about, I think he can use those as well. And then you can get him TimeSplitters: Future Perfect.

Finished up the entire Russia section of the game, now onto Nigeria. Definitely the best single player campaign in a FPS in YEARS. I really hope this sells well enough for Eurocom to get a second crack at Bond on Wii.

I love how not only is it a genuinely high quality shooter, but it actually feels like a Bond game. Most importantly, it feels like Daniel Craig Bond game.

Eurocom said they wanted to 'update' the story and feel of the game to suit Craig better as opposed to Brosnan, and I really think they nailed it.

On "realistic" games like Monster Hunter and Goldeneye, I found 480p to not even be noticeable at all other than slightly brighter skyboxes.

Where it really pops is when you play New Super Mario Bros or Mario Galaxy. The colors are unbelieveable and it makes the entire game pop right out.

:D Yep.

And the level design quality maintains itself right up until the end too. I was surprised at the jungle level and base levels.

1. Most certainly. If he enjoyed those games he'll enjoy this as well.

2. I don't have an option to really take advantage of the local mulitplayer so I've played the online and it's enjoyable. Some people have lag issues but it's not the game at all but the connection one has at times. I know when mine is used by others at home my connection gets worse but if I'm the only one one it's fantastic. You don't suffer any graphic changes online either since it's just your screen your looking at. However do note that while the online is setup similarly to Call of Duty it isn't the same. Leveling is slower. The overall pace of the game is slower actually, perhaps a bit more tactical some might say. This can be a good or bad thing depending on how you look at it.

3. The Wii controls are great. However I think it depends what you are used to. I prefer pointing on the screen and shooting. It's hard for me to play with a dual analog controller for shooters. Was never that good with them anyway to be honest, just passable. Fine for single player but I'd get destroyed online. If you've played nothing but shooters with analog controllers you'll fit right at home.

4.Yes to component cables.

Its funny that I was initially complaining about the Wiimote/Nunchuck controls too... after using thst custom scheme posted a few pages back and getting used to the game, it feels slick as fuck and I truly feel like a badass Bond in the game.

I won't lie though, I died about 10 times at the very end of the Memorial level because I never thought to look to my left
in the helicopter for the ejector button
- I figured there was something else I was looking for and then BOOM! :lol

The moment you find it though, it's like "YESSSS JUST LIKE THE MOVIE!".

Hey guys, I'm about to get back to Goldeneye after playing Metroid Other M and I remember someone posting a detailed description of the controls configuration so it would mimic CoD and something else I don't remember right now. Could someone please point me to it?

I loved Nigeria, but damn you know that section in which
just after the checkpoint there are two guys talking behind a tree?
I must have tried to sneak into 30 times and it always ended in a crazy shootout, which I hated because it ruined my game-long sneaky approach :lol :(

There is this one checkpoint in the base level at the end where you are descending down the levels. If you blow it and get noticed the game can save the checkpoint so you can't just go all stealth unless you restart the whole level.

My controller was pointed to the
left of the screen
(accidentally) as soon as it put me in the chopper it immediately looked right at it. Felt too easy. :(

Just beat it. Man, did I ever hate the start of the final level. Wave after wave of baddies coming at me and Natalya while I tried to protect her was too much. After that though it was smooth sailing, and I really loved how the QTEs and Trevelyn fight went down.

Absolutely fantastic game overall, and it fully lived up to the legacy of the N64 game. Just really a brilliant re-imagining in every way and you could tell it was made with a great deal of care and respect. Probably slides just behind Read Dead Redemption and Alan Wake for my 2010 GOTY. Major props to Eurocom for delivering the goods in a major way.

I might be the worst fps-player there is. I keep dying over and over again on agent. Just Finished the nightclub. How do you approach firefights? Hold back or run towards them?

Yeah the final level was something...

Which was kind of funny because it seemed like they took such great care to rework the plot so there wouldn't be any escort/protect Natalya missions throughout the course of the game.

protecting Natalya wasn't that difficult once you got the pattern. The real bitch for me was that Nigeria- Solar level with patrolling guards everywhere with the elevator at the end of the room

boom headshots, mostly. When things get real nasty, like when you're escaping from Severnaya, i hide wherever I can

What difficulty are you on?

I've only played the first two levels of this (want to play more, but can't get too invested so I can focus on finals) but it so far it has been great. At least these two missions have been what I like about call of duty games made better and for an entire game (I'm hoping). I'm talking about the playing slower and stealthier instead of non-stop firefights (what black ops was and I didn't like).

and thanks to the person who posted that config. I'll try it when I next play on, uh, friday or something. I messed around myself and it is feeling better, but picking it up initially didn't feel as nice as MP3 or Red Steel 2. Turning off the look thing helped a lot on its own.

Don't run and gun and use cover. Don't sprint that much especially when being shot. You won't regen health when sprinting so it's better to just find cover. Oh and use stealth!!

Third one from the bottom. Isn't that Agent? Died 6 times each going through the kitchen and main lobby in the nightclub. having some problems seeing the opponents as they seem to blend in with the enviroments. I might just suck, I don't have that much experience with FPS except for Stalker on PC, Gears on 360 and Metroid Prime on Wii

Yeah, I had that problem late on in the game when rocket launcher soldiers appeared - most of the the soldiers just blended in with the background or with each other which made it difficult to target the greater threat first. I kinda wish they went for Time Crisis's colour co-ordinated enemy threat level or Batman's detective vision just so I'd have an idea where which enemy was but that'd probably have broken the "realism" of the game. Also, I'd have preferred if it was a bit more like Metal Gear Solid in that if you hide from enemies long enough they'll stop chasing you and go back to their patrol pattern. It would have been unrealistic but would have been more of a spy game and less of a Bond / Death simulator.

It does sound like you suck a lot.

Well, in the areas where you can sneak, crouch and sneak up behind people. You should be able to use the silenced PP9 to headshot most people and clear the area. In the action sections, remember to hide behind cover then pop out and spray them. Use Aim Down Sights mode a lot and hold Z to lock the screen in the middle for better accuracy. Most guns with reflex sights work the best.

Also the game isn't like Call of Duty, you don't just run forward and hope for the best, you need to move from cover point to cover point.

Choose your weapons carefully, some are better than others and firing from the hip can help if you have ADS accuracy problems. I would recommend playing on the easiest setting first of all to familiarise yourself with the game. You will still die but it's not as punitive.

I am about 5 - 6 hours in now and I just reached the part where
the Emp has gone off in Russia
.

I really like this game. I never got into the original due to the fact that I hated the N64 controller *runs off and hides*

But I have 2 major gripes...

1) The game has frozen on me 3 times so far. I have put 30 hours into Fallout Vegas on 360 and it has never frozen or crashed on me :lol

2) Fuck the Helghast voices are annoying. How on earth did the testers not pick up on that???

Tis a pity that the Wii can't patch games. Sure those two flaws aren't stopping from playing the game but they are sometimes off putting...especially when you are in a gun fight and the game just freezes.

Still a great game though. I just hope Nintendo's next console allows for games to get patched. It'd be nicer if the games were properly tested before release and all games were issue free but that is just a fools dream :p

Game only froze on me once.

It seems that Black Ops wii is the freezing culprit this year. You might want to check your disc drive out.

You must have the world's only fully-functioning copy of NV, then ;-)

I have checked the disc and it is spotless. I have played the Wii quite a bit over the last few weeks with DKCR, Epic Mickey, and Monster Hunter and have never had any issues what so ever.

This has been the only game that has frozen on me. And it happens at the most random time too.

And in regards to Vegas, I am 80 hours in on Fallout 3 (which I bought on release) and it too has never crashed/frozen on me either :lol

I played about half of this and then set it aside when DKCR came out; I played a few levels last night and am up to the level after the tank mission. Such a fun game.
