Golf Story |OT| Return to Camelot

Been playing this all morning. The dialogue is hilariously awesome.

Only complaint I have so far is input latency. Nowhere near as tight as Everybody’s Golf on my 21ms OLED.

Just realised I'm sad at the Americans not knowing the glory of a Greggs' sausage roll

I'm an American and I have no idea what that is, but I love sausage and usually like food that can be rolled so you have my attention.

I know a guy named Greg that's a real asshole, but I won't let that get in the way.

Just a few more hours until I can get off work and by this!

I'm really tempted to pick this up but I'm afraid there will be a PC version down the line and I'm really trying to be patient and avoid double-dipping in general.

I seem to have encountered a bug that made it so rumble doesn't work anymore :(

Edit: huh, restarting the game made it work again. Dunno what caused it in the first place.

My first hour was very fun. I don't know if I missed anything by accidentally going back to sleep, but wandering around doing those small sidequests and finding those strange buttons has been very fun.

What's the deal with the tees around the area outside your house? You can press A to tee up at them but then afterwards the balls just sit and can't be interacted with. There are so many possible holes to shoot for from any given tee. Do you have to get a hole in one on all of them?

I'm blown away by how spot on they nail golf culture. I laughed out loud at the simulator kid and at the "I need to buy a new driver" guy. Amazing and I'm only like 20 minutes in.

Fuck, I remember being young and playing a Mario Tennis with RPG elements (GBC?) and I remember absolutely loving it.

BOUGHT.

Yeah this is what I was complaining about on the last page. It seems when you "tee up anywhere" you can only hit the ball once and then you can't do anything else with it. With a slight exception, I noticed if the ball landed on the green sometimes pressing Y near the ball makes it disappear and you drop a new one where you are standing. Doesn't seem to work on the putting area though. (which is especially annoying because the extra golf balls lying around get in the way of your putting)

I laughed out loud when I encountered the "new-driver guy". It's perfect, really. Got my golf license (you need that to play in Europe) this year and wish I had that game already while I was studying for the test.

Now I feel I'll be missing out on a lot of the jokes since I don't know the first thing about golf culture and Australian slangs. :(

So is there a good explanation for leveling up? The way things go up and down confuses me..is there anything i should be pumping points into?

Yup, it's ridiculous. And in Austria you also need to be a member in a golf club (= yearly fee of at least 500 €, no way I'll pay that much) to play ANYWHERE around here. They're trying to keep it an upper class sport. It sucks.

Luckily, Golf Story doesn't care about this elitist crap. :)

Whaaaaaat? Here in the USA we have courses like that but we also have "public courses" that dont' have memberships and have reasonable green fees.

There are no public courses in Europe? The city i live in owns several courses and they’re relatively affordable to golf at.

Is the disc golf element well done? Was one of the more exciting parts of the trailer for me....

Not sure, I just saw it in the trailer. Only played a few minutes this morning before work. I'm sure it's great though.

Oh and yeah, you need a license and to pass a test to play golf in Europe? WTF? I live very close to Pebble Beach in the US (considered one of the best golf courses in the world) and if you have the money, you can play.

If I get too frustrated with Dishonored I'm gonna have to buy this. Usually I wait till the GAF honeymoon starts to wane, but this seems like great impressions.

Well this came out of nowhere.

Just finished Steamworld Dig 2. Might give this a whirl over the weekend.

That's super cheap for a membership. I've heard Euros argue that it makes the game more egalitarian. $700 for all the golf you can play in a year sure beats $50 a round.

I belong to two clubs and the cheaper of the two is $2500 plus minimum of $50 spent in the restaurant a month. And that's a very inexpensive club in the states.

Well I think I broke the game. I have a soft lock

I
hit all the buttons, and then putted the ball into the hole in the door, the guard got spooked and now i'm stuck, can't move or pause or do anything.

Edit: Fixed it. I guess I hit B as soon as the cutscene started of
the guard getting confused
, which skipped it but didn't advance the gamestate
so the guards never left
so I just got stuck there.

Weird. Luckily it auto saves everytime you exit a screen so I didn't lose really any progress except I had to
hit the buttons again, but i knew where they were so it went by quick

I can't speak for all of Europe but at least in Austria and as far as I know Germany, all the regular courses require a membership (+ license). There are some small private courses that specialise in tourists or training programs but even there you have to either be a guest accompanying a regular member or be a member of their training program.

There's no "anybody can pay the green fee" courses here - as far as I know from my parents who have been playing for about 15 years.

Anyway, sorry, didn't want to derail the thread.

That's a misunderstanding. You still have to pay the green fee outside of your home club. You are simply not ALLOWED to play at any club if you're not a member of another club and don't have the golfing license.

I got a hole in one on one of those tees and the flag lowered down on the pole.

Kodiak

Not an asshole.
So what's the consensus, GAF:

1. Stardew Valley-esque must-buy surprise?

OR

2. Not worth the price of admission?

Looking for a game to tide me over until Mario after I finish SWD2

My god, my luck with this game is so fucked right now. I'm loving it, but I soft locked myself AGAIN

Playing putt-putt and i hit the side of the wall on the 9th hole and it gets stuck.
Character is sitting there and I'm soft locked now.

Guess I'm buying this when I get home after work. Nintendo is taking all my money this year. I just keep getting switch games and I even upgraded to the N3DSXL thanks to new Metroid. I normally pair Nintendo with another system or a gaming PC but fuck I'm happy with just the Nintendo stuff. Plus that means I'll actually play my games like Golf Story haha.
