So, I updated Canary today and now it won't even open. You click the icon and a message pops up saying Chrome has crashed and asking if you want to re-open.

Anyone else getting this?

Yes, I am. I don't notice any slowdown, though. I think it may be because I have both Fanboy and Easylist selected?

Yes, I am. What I do, is just keep restarting and eventually it kicks in. The reason it happens is when you quit with a bunch of tabs open, and when it restarts it tries to reopen those tabs. Keep trying and eventually it will open up without any tabs open.

A question for everyone: What build of Chrome are you running?

For the longest time, I've been using Canary, and I have had the problem mentioned aboved on many different instances throughout the year.

I am thinking of dropping down to either the dev or beta channel.

I don't notice any slowdown, but the alert causes a yellow icon to appear in Tools. Bah. I'll live with it until the API is public and the extension is official, but damn. How does it know/calculate that it's slowing me down? I don't notice anything at all.

Just transferred over from Firefox, it was freezing pretty often. I'm talking like once every 15 or so minutes for 10-30 seconds (not responding). Also, sometimes it had great difficulty booting without going straight to (not responding) mode. That added with crashes etc., pretty terrible.

Chrome seems fine so far. I got the settings up and running, added some extensions too. Adblock Plus isn't as good as it was with Firefox. Mine doesn't block video ads, which is normal, so I tried the about:flags thing but I'm not sure if I did it right. I hope I did, and I haven't seen any video ads for a while now. Haven't been looking for them either, so I guess I'll find out later. It also leaves some ads sometimes, sometimes removing them. Some sites seem to load a bit slower too, at least the first time around. Strange behavior but I'll take it over the constant freezing. I've been streaming content for over 3 hours now without a hitch, with multiple windows open and multiple videos running simultaneously.

if you're on mac, the experimental Adblock beta will spam your console with hundreds of error messages while browsing. i just uninstalled the sucker and went back to the regular version.

Anyone have a link to a quick how-to guide to move from Firefox to Chrome (including bookmarks/saved passwords/etc.)? Want it to be as smooth as possible of course... :)

I'm the author of this script, but I haven't used it on Canary. I don't even have it. I'm currently updating the script, as I finally updated my youtube one. If you go to the Console, is there anything about it?

Alternatively, if you want to try my next version, please PM me and I'll send you a link.

I've removed the quotation marks around the button, and the next version will have them a bit smaller. Also, I had originally made them with my custom CSS in mind.

Edit: Preview.

does anyone else find the twitter website unusable on dev?

it seems to cause my CPU to spike and the page just locks up. I can scroll but it takes about 4-5 seconds for the page to move.

I have to actually kill the process from the task manager.

It was unusable on the Canary a few weeks ago before it was fixed. But now I have problems on the Doctor Who Wiki doing the same thing. Switching to Safari for that site is fine. It makes no sense.

Well that is the issue, I like to have my pinned tabs open back up when I relaunch. Oh well, I can use the RC build.

So why does Chrome have trouble rendering the same icon the same way? Five YouTube tabs open and each icon is different. Only 2 and 3 are pixel perfect. All the others are offset by a decimal of a pixel and are blurred. What the heck? The third one's the worst.

Yes, I too have this problem. I actually just switched to the dev version and noticed it.

The first three are extensions I made myself just to have "smart" bookmarks in my toolbar without having to have the Bookmarks bar open. The FaceBook and Twitter will open a new window if one doesn't exist or switch to the open one and the NeoGAF one shows a pop-down with links to OT, Gaming and Subscriptions as well as a list of opened NeoGAF tabs.

I wish I could replace the first two with locked App Tabs that always reset to the original URL and never disappear when closed. Fuck, why doesn't Chrome have that? But then again, I have all that space in the Addressbar space so why not use it? The only drawback is all the processes that are running. But they use hardly any resources each so it's no big deal. I would make one for every single major site I go to if I wanted to. I'd been thinking of submitting the NeoGAF one to the gallery.

Okay, this is awesome. Please do make the NeoGAF one available. It would be an awesome addition.

Question:

Just started using Chrome this week (Version 14.0.835.202, on Mac/Snow Leopard).

When I highlight spoiler text in a post on the forum, the text is a dark gray, and really tough to read. Any ideas?

What color is your selection in System Preferences > General?

I'm not sure I know what you mean...?

The highlight color? I tested highlighting spoiler text on Firefox and it displays correctly; black text on my highlight color. In Chrome, it's black text on a dark greyed version of my highlight color.

Firefox:

A) General Settings in System Preferences.app

B) Firefox and Chrome use totally different rendering engines. Chrome simply tints the background the selection color while Firefox makes it opaque.

C) You should be using a NeoGAF extension or custom CSS to make it so Spoilers are shown when you hover over them. You can also use CSS to override the selection colors yourself too. It's very easy if you install the right extensions.

I'm rocking two GAF Avatar memes at the same time.

Also, I had originally suggested YouTube Title Adder which works similarly, but different. It works on all sites, and instead adds a title to the link (So you know where it goes) and provides a + button to view the video inline.

Something weird is going on with Chrome on my computer. It sometimes makes my whole systen run extremely slow, as if it was swapping memory like crazy (which I do not believe is actually happening - read on). This seems to happen completely at random, with no relation to how many tabs I have open or anything like that.

Once this behavior kicks in, just opening up a minimized Explorer window or any other basic task will take like 10 seconds to complete. Looking at the task manager, I see one of the Chrome processes using 25% of my CPU time, but no extraordinary amount of RAM (and my total RAM usage would only be at about 50% or so). I'm confused as to why this makes my computer grind to a halt, since there are obviously resources available. The second I close Chrome everything is back to normal.

This is on a laptop with a dual core i5 CPU at 2.3 GHz and 4 GB of RAM. No other program I've ever run on this computer has made anything like this happen. Anyone with similar experiences, or a possible solution?

not being a troll ... seriously asking... I have been a firefox fan for a long time. What makes Chrome better?

I started using it because it was faster and did not have the memory leak problems of firefox (not sure if either of these is true anymore)... now I stick eith it because of the omnibar... I just can't live without it...

Disable all your extensions, if you have any, and test it. Then enable one at a time. Have you installed any lately?

Well, that would make for one heck of a long process, since this happens very randomly. It doesn't happen every time I run the browser, far from it. Sometimes it doesn't happen at all for a week or more, and I don't know how to force it to happen either. It just randomly does, every once in a while. So I don't see how I could conceivably figure out which extension is causing this, if any.

All I know is that Chrome (or some part of it) is causing this when happens, since closing the browser makes the problem go away immediately.

I guess you could say that this is a non-issue, since it doesn't happen with any regularity, but it's still very annoying when it does happen.

ah hell, ill give it a try. What are essential chrome plugins?

There are many great ones, but I'd have to say that the most essential one is the Image Properties Context Menu extension, since the Chrome devs have amazingly left this extremely basic functionality (viewing the properties of an image) out of the browser. Blows my mind every time I think about it.

Other ones I use and wouldn't want to be without:

AdBlock Plus
imgur (lets you instantly rehost images and other nice stuff)
LastPass (this is also absolutely essential for me - couldn't live without a password manager, and LastPass is by far the most convenient one I've ever used)
Mail Checker Plus for Google Mail
Notifier for Google Reader
Smooth Gestures (the best extension for mouse gestures I've found, but it sadly pales in comparison with the amazing native implementation of mouse gestures in Opera)
SmoothScroll (makes pages scroll smoothly, as opposed to the default instant jumps)

Learn the omnibar. That was the biggest hurdle for me.

I'm also kinda surprised it's still not built in to the browser.

I actually got an email from someone at Google the other day about that extension. They want to promote it in the store or some such

I guess that means they're not adding it to the browser any time soon

Didn't you hear? GAF is jumping off the Imgur ship to minus. The new hotness.

I did hear, actually. Not sure what the advantages would be for me though, since I really only use these services for quick rehosting of images. I don't have an account on any of them or anything like that.

Another annoying issue I'm having (and I know I'm not alone on this one): My extension buttons keep rearranging themselves. As far as I can tell, this too is completely random. Sometimes when starting the browser, they just won't be in the order I've arranged them, and I have to put them back in my preferred order again. Not sure if there's a pattern to what they get rearranged to. I know it's not alphabetical, but perhaps it could by by time of installation or something like that. Gonna look more closely the next time it happens.

So is there a general consensus of which is better, adblock or adblock plus?

Neither of which seem as good as the firefox alternative, especially for blocking video ads.

Correct. This is what everyone should be running. Just don't forget to enable the Experimental Extension APIs in about:flags as well or it won't work.

Yeah. The experimental AdBlock is great at blocking flash ads that you would normally see 50 times in one day even if you would never consider buying the product. And I NEVER do. Ads don't work on me anymore. The constant barrage of ads that get thrown at me every day have desensitized me to them. They don't influence my decisions at all. Occasionally I'll click one to help a site. But other than that, it's just an annoying delay or distracting animation... or sound if it's one of those "Congratulations! You won!" ads.

I wonder if Chrome has an experimental API that would allow an extension like DownloadHelper to FINALLY be ported to Chrome. Right now it requires deep access to the page as it is loading. Since AdBlock does the same thing, I wonder if DH could possibly be released now?

My whole thing is, though that Adblock noticeably slows down the performance of Safari 5.1 on my Mac, so I don't use it. Does it do the same with Chrome?

Been having this problem for some time now, anyone know how to fix this? After viewing some youtube videos or other flash videos, the plugin Shockwave Flash (11,0,1,152) will use all my available memory. Even closing youtube / flash tabs will not free the memory. Seems like a memory leak to me, but I don't know how to fix it.

In the meantime I whenever Windows 7 says my computer is low on memory I have to kill the Shockwave Flash plugin with the Chrome Task Manager. Shockwave Flash is using 1GB of memory most of the time and it will not be freed when I close a tab.

Chrome will let you know when it does. I guess it depends on the site.
