Google's Sundar Pichai announces Stock HTC One

I want this phone so bad. The HTC One has incredible hardware, but I've been wary of getting another HTC phone because my 4G has terrible bloatware and HTC gave up on updating it shortly after release, so it's still on 2.3.6, even though the 4G LTE is on 4.x.

Sucks I'm on Sprint. I need to talk with family members about switching to T-mobile. Our contract conveniently ended two weeks ago.

Too expensive. Who drops $599 on a phone? You can get the same phone on contract for $150

After discovering the the greatness of prepaid plans, you save much more buying a phone outright while paying half the price for your monthly service.

The only way I could see myself ever leaving my prepaid plan with AT&T service that costs me under $50/month is if I could get unlimited data. I don't make too much use of over 2GB data per month, but I have a feeling I would stick with postpaid if I had the option of unlimited on Verizon or AT&T again.

Of course, if T-mobile ever expands their damn coverage I will jump on with their unlimited service.

Camera will probably suck now.

That's what I'm worried about too.

Because it won't have the same software optimization that htc built into with sense 5.0.

No reason to believe HTC isn't providing the patches into the stock rom. Or is that not possible?

I'm on AT&T and still haven't even gotten the camera/battery update yet.

Will wait to see how bad the camera is with stock. Also, I don't really want to part with my grandfathered unlimited VZW plan.

what is your plan when your contract is up w/ Verizon? I want to keep unlimited, but you need to buy your own device, right? Seems like all these off contract phones are from AT&T/T-Mobile.

the capacitive buttons sounds like a pain. I love the onscreen ones w/ my GNex.

isn't the HTC logo a button? for the Stock One, they should use that somehow.

I'm currently using a HTC Evo LTE and I like it a lot.

I'm a fan of the three capacitive buttons; back, home, and multitask.

I'm huge on the multitask button, I use it so often.. I also have that long press enabled for menu and the home button will function as Google Now with a long press. Wish they would have kept that formula with the One.

No extra user interface that OEM put one like Touchwiz or Sense on top, just the pure OS.

It also means the features like Samsung smart scroll/others and stuff or HTC's Blinkfeed is gone.

Does that noticeably translate into a faster experience? Or improved battery life?

Or is it mostly just for personal preference and convenience?

Right now, I am holding out hope that the Moto X is going to come to VZW and it is actually a flagship phone (unlike the rumors stemming from the FCC document). If not (it's not looking good in that respect), I will maybe buy an S4 full price from VZW, root it, and put a stock ROM on it.

I'm playing the Devil's advocate here. But people shouldn't be surprise if they just flat out decide to just stick with flagship devices going forward. They seem to be testing the waters with the S4 and HTC One.

You might have something to run with on that if they didnt just have someone yesterday stressing that they will continue to try to push prices on phones down (ala Nexus line) while still trying to get as close to high end hardware. And then today following that up with saying the Nexus project as it exists will continue with a new nexus phone this year...

I mean.. they just announced that its going to continue. Im not sure what else you are looking for. It seems clear that going forward you can choose the official nexus that will be cheaper, or get a flagship OEM phone with vanilla also.

Choices.

This is somewhat tempting, but I already have a Nexus 4. I haven't really been keeping up on phones lately. How much better is the One than the 4?

my set up right now on the One. Long press back button for menu(no annoying 3 dots on the screen). Long press home for Google now and double tap for the app switcher.

Almost every tech site says that the One is the best smartphone out right now.

but anyways, people with a carrier version should be able to flash stock android when it comes out.

I still think there's no advantage of stock android over Sense 5. You are better of buying the 64gig Dev edition for 50 dollars more.

Can't wait to feverishly refresh the Play store every day until preorders go up.

The biggest differences are the 1080p screen, really nice aluminum shell, great camera, and high quality stereo speakers. (The speakers and camera might not live up to their potential without all of HTC's software, unfortunately.)

Internally, they have the same amount of RAM, same GPU, and the One's CPU is a slight upgrade over the Nexus's.

All the folks saying that sense or touchwiz is better will change their tune in a hurry if Google announces an awesome feature in 4.3 or KLP and they're stuck waiting six months for an update because of the carriers.

Sense and Touchwiz is better than stock android.

All the stock android diehards only have guarantee timely upgrade as advantage....but so far what awesome features? most update are just fixed on something that shouldn't need fixing in the first place.
its seem like Stock android is always a in beta. Both Gnex and Nexus 4 had horrible battery life when they came out and needed those updates...

Touchwiz itself has enough features that stock android wish it has.

Seems like it's not really worth the upgrade for me, then.

Thanks

Sprint unlimited everything $110
Tmobile unlimited everything $70
That $40 difference per month comes out to $960 over a two year contract. Plus after two years you are forced to upgrade on a contract otherwise you are subsidizing a phone you don't have.

The $80 Sprint plan has unlimited data, messaging, and calling to other mobile phones. The only thing that is limited is 450 minutes of calls to landlines.

The $10 difference is $240 over two years, which comes out cheaper than the unsubsidized phone on T-Mobile. And that's only if you pay full price for the Sprint plan. Mine is $50/month.

$50/month with Sprint is not a plan that anyone can just jump on though. Not really fair to use it as a comparison, though it's obviously nice for you (at least, if you live in an LTE area).

T-Mobile also gives you the advantage of fast speeds if you are lucky enough to be in their service area.

Touchwiz/sense looks like shit Imo.

I'm not trying to get into phone plan wars. I am paying $125 for two phones with 2GB data each, after employee discount and with a slightly advantageous alltel plan on Verizon. I was just comparing like to like to show how much of a subsidy is being paid. Can you do better than Tmobile depending on your usage, subsidies, usage patterns etc? Yes. But like for like the cost is much lower, in fact you can see with Tmobile prices for phones that the one will set you back $20 a month.

well touchwiz is not so pretty, but its the king of features.

You obviously haven't seen Sense 5, its very elegant and modern and to me looks better than stock android. Even most reviews say they prefers it over stock.

Seriously, what does stock android has to offer over over Sense/Touchwiz? oh yeah, updates to compensate for the mediocre hardware of the nexus line......

Nothing. Stock has so little things going for it. You get prompt updates only if you're on a Nexus line. Other stock phones won't even get prompt updates outside of the Google Phones that are upcoming. Oh man 4.3 is going to fix Bluetooth! Big whoop. Most phones on 4.1 don't even need a BT fix.

There is literally no redeeming feature of stock aesthetically not to mention the lack of features it gives us.

And yes I hate the fact that the menu, multitask, and back buttons are on the screen. Hate it so much.

Software preference aside, why do people keep saying the Nexus has mediocre hardware? Aside from no LTE (which hardly mattered on GSM phones at the time) on the Nexus 4, it was top of the line when it came out 8 months ago and was only now just surpassed by the One/S4.

I hope they keep up their high end SoCs and budget price for the future. Though I am now considering a Sensed One for my next phone as I am not as opposed to Sense as I was between Sense 3 and Sense 5. TouchWiz appearance is very off-putting for me though.

1. Piece of shit camera.
2. Battery life concerns.

I'd agree with points 1, 3 and 4 for the Galaxy Nexus. I'd at least rate the Nexus 4 camera as decent.

Battery life I'd rate as above average...and I've used a lot of modern smartphones!

Anyway, there is room for both options, and the skin-wars is getting pretty crazy up in these threads with all the hyperbole*.

Yes, there is. Sense app drawer is not very good compared to stock. A lot of wasted space. I haven't used the One enough to think of other, specific examples.

No, they don't.
well maybe Touchwiz ;)

I actually like the sense interface. The clock is amazingly designed, the interface is pretty minimal overall, the lock screen is pretty nice as well. I'm using a different launcher but I kept the lock screen and found a way to make blink feed work with my home screen as well.

I was tempted to just keep it as is but I wanted to change the icons. My phone is quite sexy.

QUITE.

pretty sure the Nexus 4 was based on an already existing phone that had better battery life, LTE and took better photos

Remember those rumors last year about multiple "Nexus" phones from several OEMs? This looks like it. ;)

I really like this idea. One Nexus device a year, and several Nexus experience ones from other brands. Stock Android offers the best experience, and it's fantastic to have to option to taste it in other great hardware. By the way, GSIV and One aren't the first non-Nexi to get this. The Xoom also fits the same bill. And there's also, PandaBoard, a SoC that is supported by AOSP.

Hope they do that with a Sony phone next. Is it too late for Xperia Z?
