There are two CD slips. One has a DVD with a 36 minute 'making of' documentary. It also has the 16 page booklet, which isn't included in the standard edition (it has a link to an online version instead). There's also a code to access a hidden part of the Plastic Beach game. I think it also allows you to stream their Coachella performance.

This album has really grown on me. Songs that I didn't really care for at first, now I love. It's fantastic.

One disappointment is Glitter Freeze. This song is BEGGING for Albarn to come in on it and give some awesome melody. This song could be the "Dare" of this album, a great dance club song. Instead it's almost all instrumental, wasted opportunity

I would also say the same about White Flag. Oh man, Albarn coulda killed it in the background at some points. Would have taken this song to another level.

I think I agree.

Man this album really does take a few listens to "get it". The first time I heard Superfast Jellyfish I was like "WTF IS THIS", now I love it! :lol

This album has grown substantially on me. Didn't quite like it at first, but I'm leaning towards it being awesome right now.

Even Sweepstakes is cool :p

The Lou Reed track is brilliant.

Superfast is alright. Took me a few listens to "get it" it too. I still think White Flag and Sweepstakes are crap. Rhinestone Eyes should have been main track, not Stylo.

White Flag is great, I still can't warm up to Sweepstakes or Broken though. All the rest of the tracks are fantastic.

And yes the Lou Reed song is brilliant, partly because of the fact that I keep picturing an animated Disney-like villain singing the song as if it were in the Lion King or something.

SpeedingUptoStop

will totally Facebook friend you! *giggle* *LOL*
Sweepstakes and the Lou Read track I'm not exactly down on, White Flag is great outside of the disjointed rap parts.

The remix ruined the original song for me. I can't listen to it anymore without thinking "I'd rather listen to the Soulchild Remix".

This is very true. The song is so fucking dope, it was in Fifa 2002 and as a kid i used to leave it on the menu screen to keep listening to that one song.

With all the artists who recorded material for this album and weren't included, and given how high quality the material that did make the cut is, I am incredibly excited to see this phase's b-sides collection.

I believe I read that The Horrors recorded some material - I want to hear that so badly.

Ive listened to the whole album 3 times, the first run through I thought it was their worst album. But it has grown on me in a big way (moreso than any album in recent memory), and Im really starting to enjoy it. Stylo is probably my favorite track, and the only track I think is terrible is 'Some Kind of Nature'.

word

i want to hear this one too:

Gruff Rhys recorded two songs — "Superfast Jellyfish" and "Leviathan". The latter, described by Rhys as "more of a night-time song, a three o'clock in the morning, speeding down the autobahn evading West German police-type track", does not feature on the album

Pretty solid album. I'm not sold on the Lou Reed track and sweepstakes.

White Flag, stylo, superfast jellyfish, melancholy hill, empire ants and rhinestone eyes are all great tracks.

The more I listen to Plastic Beach the more I like it.

And the more I listen to it, I keep thinking,"This would be so much better if these rappers were not on it."

:(

To be honest the album reminds me of the DJ Shadow "The Outsider" album in that it's sorta all over the map. I actually preferred all of the rap songs on Shadow's latest, but they really disrupt the cohesiveness of the album.

Every time I hear Sweepstakes I hate it more. I love pretty much all the rest of the songs though. On Melancholy Hill and Empire Ants being my favorites.

Songs I love:

- Orchestral Intro
- Rhinestone Eyes
- Stylo
- Superfast Jellyfish
- Empire Ants (!!!)
- Glitter Freeze
- Broken
- Plastic Beach
- To Binge
- Pirate's Progress

Songs I like:

- Welcome to the World (please supply an instrumental without Snoop rapping, please)
- White Flag (nice bongo, strings, and general instrumentation but the rapping sucks balls, please give us an instrumental!)

Songs like Cloud of Unknowing, Pirate Jet, Sweepstakes, Some Kind of Nature, On Melancholy Hill add nothing to the album, and in fact, I'm of the opinion that Pirate Jet and Cloud of Unknowing are the worst possible ways period to end the album.

A lot of tracks are good but their order could be better. For instance. Rhinestone Eyes would benefit being right after Welcome to the World, and The Binge would be the best overall track to end the album and then let Pirate's Progress finalize the album. Considering Pirate's Progress is only on the Japanese version of the album apparently, I can't IMAGINE Pirate Jet being this album's "official' end track. It's too forgettable.

If you condensed the album to the songs I listed in the love category, this album would really benefit.

Melancholy Hill and Some Kind of Nature are BIG TIME growers. Keep listening. I didn't like either of them at first. Now I love them. Some kind of nature has some beautiful melodies in it, and Melancholy Hill is just a really uplifting song.

And a side note. I dunno if it's been posted but

Stylo Remix (Labrinth Remix ft. Tinie Tempah)

It reminds me of the White Album. White Album is schizophrenic like Plastic Beach. But I like most of the stuff on White Album.

Earlier someone used Plastic Beach in an analogy with Wilco's Yankee Foxtrot and Radiohead's Kid A. White Album? Wow. You youngins need to get a hold of yourselves. Like take some deep breaths and think about what you are saying.

EDIT: just saw Himuro's sequencing thoughts. That's a big part of an album and I agree the album might be better rearranged with some songs taken out completely.

Actually, I said OK Computer. And went on to explain my point, and how I actually didn't need to "take some deep breaths". You didn't reply, though.

Maybe you could call Albarn and let him know where he went wrong.

I hate to be a dickhead but this is a video game board. What percentage of people even bought the Gorillaz LP on release day with the knowledge that Dan the Automator and Dangermouse were the two hip-hop producers of the "moment?"
The Automator's inclusion on the debut album is what convinced me to give it a shot. I was a big fan of his work on Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagonecologyst.

Cant wait till Tuesday love all the Gorillaz albums, did this in half an hour.

Had to make concessions for what was available, 69 Z28 when in the video its a SS Camero, and I couldn't put STYLO on the grill. Anyway if you have Forza 3 and you want the design its on my storefront for free, just look up STYLO.

After listening to the album for a couple of days I've come to the conclusion that this album is really good. Wow, what an astute observation I know. Songs like "Stylo," "Empire Ants," and "On Melonchaly Hill" will stay on heavy rotation in my most played list well into summer, and I'm sure I'll have other songs as favorites as time passes.

How does this album compare to other Gorillaz album's? Who cares. I'd like to think when you compare a Gorillaz album to something, it should be to everything else going on in the music scene at the moment. The thing that I love most about Albarn's work is how different it is from most of the other stuff I listen to.

Personally, I'd like to think of this album as a start (this will the first album I have bought since December) to what should be a fantastic year in music.

Kid A? I don't see the correlation.

I compare to White Album because of how schizophrenic it is. It has no defined style. At least with Self-Titled and Demon Days I could pick out a certain style. With Plastic Beach it goes from style to style track by track, just like White Album.

Also, how old are you?

I'm 28, I understood your comparison, and to be fair to the other guy he was just using the references to say that it was the group's masterpiece (actually the guy cited OK, Computer). Just mentioning Plastic Beach next to any of those bands seems silly to me. White Album is all over the place, I agree.

Me too. :) I guess we old.

Grabbed my copy today, I'm waiting until I can listen to it uninterrupted.

In the meantime I'm listening to Demon Days, still as great as ever.

edit: The Experience Edition has a sweet ass box.

After listening to it constantly since I posted the NPR stream, I've found this album to be really depressing. It's kinda predicting a depressingly fake future, and then welcomes it as if being indoctrinated. Lot's of talk of 'natural' being forgot, and our inevitable 'plastic' future. I really don't think this album has much to do with blatant environmentalism so much as the concept of killing our old nature and accepting the overproduction. Despite the hate, Cloud of Unknowing, Some Kind of Nature, On Melancholy Hill, and Pirate Jet actually add the most to the themes of the album.

Doesn't do it justice. :/ Too bad you can't do it in Gran Turismo. :p It's good though. :D

Add Some Kind of Nature to my list. :D

As someone who is not a big fan of Gorillaz beyond the singles, I like this album as a whole more than their previous attempts. Favorite tracks are White Flag (the instrumental sections are fantastic), Rhinestone Eyes, and Superfast Jellyfish. I think Rhinestone Eyes would have been a better choice for the single than Stylo, which in my opinion is the album's most cliche track.

Ha Ha l was on the verge of quoting that :)

His Salford roots really come through there and that laugh near the end of the track is awesome.
I'm really warming to Glitter Freeze, its got a great low end groove to it that just chugs along.

Yeah, I think it's one of those tracks that people will overlook but I love its slow build. I wonder how much input MES had in it musically. It doesn't really sound like anything on the album but it's far from a normal Fall track, besides the repetition.

And I didn't know he was from Salford, but I don't really know much about Manchester besides that a ton of my favorite bands hail from there

Gruff Rhys recorded two songs — "Superfast Jellyfish" and "Leviathan". The latter, described by Rhys as "more of a night-time song, a three o'clock in the morning, speeding down the autobahn evading West German police-type track", does not feature on the album

I want to here this too, anything Rhys touches is gold.

The first half is pretty bad, the second half is quite a bit better. (Of the remix linked)

I still prefer the original song.

I find both of the other remix's good for different reasons.

This one
is kind of a pop/club version, which works well with the vocals.

This one, is more like something I would expect to be on a future album as an official remix.

Just started listening to this today. Fav tracks atm are Rhinestone eyes and Superfast Jellyfish. I thought Rhinestone eyes would be the single, the chorus beat is so fucking catchy!

Edit: just saw the music video. Bruce Willis wtf!! :lol The music video was good, but I think the song itself is kinda boring and too repetitive to be the first single.
BTW, Superfast Jellyfish is clearly going to be the next single. The cop drives through a billboard with the title of the song on it and the music video ends with them driving into the ocean.

(Haven't listened to it yet) but I found Demon Days very depressing, especially as it dropped after Bush's reelection.
