Gorillaz - Plastic Beach [2010]

Been streaming it as well. I don't think it's an album most people will fall in love with right off the bat; you've gotta give it a few more run-throughs and it starts to grow on you. Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach, Rhinestone Eyes, Superfast Jellyfish, On Melancholy Hill, and Sweepstakes are easily the best songs off this album, imo

I was hoping for an early release (Australia so 5th) since they put out OUT NOW posters but it seems the ad guys thought they'd get it out of the way, bastards.

On the plus side I picked up D-Sides and it's fantastic. I've fallen in love with the Metronomy remix of El Manana, so good.

Obviously you haven't even given it a real listen. It's Superfast Jellyfish. Geez.
I am only getting 1 song from itunes. Bought the other 2 albums. Went through the album on youtube and found most of the songs pretty bad. Still was disappointed by the album.

I was just talking with my friend about how the album doesn't really have a standout single like 19-2000 or Feel Good Inc that you just can't stop listening to, and for him this was a let down but i maybe see it as its strong point; the album is really way more consistent and cohesive than anything else they have put out before. I mean Demon Days had the narrative connection and that was great, but it doesn't match up to how well the music gells together here to create a single vibe and how much the songs compliment and enhance eachother in context, and it does that without sacrificing any of the inventiveness and variety that makes Gorillaz so great. I don't want to say it is better than Demon Days yet, because that album had great staying power with me, but Plastic Beach is certainly up there with it for me, and i like it more than their first album for sure.

Yea, that track is great, Metronomy is great.

I'm picking this up day one regardless of reviews etc. Gorillaz was my first full fledged obsession with any band. At 11 years old, it was one of the only albums I still listen to, to this day.

Demon Days still seems more of a focused album. It's almost a concept album...

That said, I love To Binge, a lot. The double tracking is awesome.

Goddamnit, I want the two bonus itunes track already. Feels like the true ending is being withheld from us like a videogame, and you have to buy the DLC ending or fucking something fuck

After some more listens I still don't know what to really think about this one. Although I LIKE it, I don't have those tracks that I can constantly play over and over. The only ones that come close are Empire Ants, and Superfast Jellyfish. it doesn't have the same knock in the drums that the self titled had either. It's a lot more mellow.

Hmmmm, I don't know :/

This album is my favourite Gorillaz album. Slightly better than Demon Days in my opinion.

Empire Ants, Stylo, Broken, and Rhinestone Eyes are my favs.

Album is bloody fantastic and absolutely grows on you. My first listen to Sweepstakes left me saying "do not want", but after listening to the whole album about 4 times, it has seriously grown on me and now I find myself singing a long to Sweepstakes. I just find it odd, that at first I had hyped it up to be something amazing, coming off the back of The Good, The Bad and The Queen, and when I first listened to it I was slightly disappointed. But it's just grown. I wouldn't call Damon Albarn a musical genius (that's going way too far :lol) but he is very creative, and the collection of artists he has working with him really help make this album something special. Even if you do dislike some of the tracks on Youtube or from what you've streamed, really, give it another go. It's a very strong album that is consistent throughout and constantly surprising (for myself, at least).

This is not the best album of the three, and I don't even think it tops Demon Days. "It's more consistent/cohesive" is just a clever way for you to reason with the complete lack of singles on this album. The first half starts out really poorly with the two rap songs....the Snoop song would have been awesome if he actually decided to write a verse. What is the point of the Kano song? Aside from that Empire Ants is the only song on the first half that really grabbed me. I understand the excitement for a new Gorillaz album but this wasn't what I was hoping for.

so it's not a singles album.. not a bad thing personally.. means it gives it room to grow instead of tiring out from overplay

In most cases, I'd prefer a cohesive, flowing album to one with a few good singles and a bunch of filler.

Agree. As much as I love Demon Days, it was rare that I sat and listened to the whole album. I usually just put on Last Living Souls, Feel Good Inc, El Manana and DARE and called it a day.

I guess if you're the type who likes to pick out singles and make a playlist, Plastic Beach wouldn't be up your alley.

Bingo.

As far as I'm concerned
Wilco:Yankee Hotel Foxtrot::Radiohead:OK Computer::Gorllaz:plastic Beach

Superfast Jellyfish is annoying as hell. Sweepstakes is mostly pointless, except towards the end.

Overall, the sound of the album is more mature than the first two, but it's odd (and a bit of a misfire) that we don't actually hear any of the Gorillaz themselves until Track 4.

2D sings on "Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach"

I'm not a huge Gorillaz fan, I don't go out of my way to listen to them. When a new album comes out I'll give it a spin, but only because it's a unique side-project.

I have to say though, Welcome To The World Of The Plastic Beach is fucking cringe worthy.

It's one of my favorite tracks on the album. I love the beat, 2D's backing vox, it's all great.

It's pretty fascinating overall how so many people have so many different favorites. Hallmark of a truly fantastic album.

yeah that's the only track i downright dislike

it's weird that he had such interesting choices in other musical genres (mark e smith, lou reed, clash) but made such a boring choice with snoop.

would have been cool if he got like redman or something

Roots Manuva, De La Soul, Bootie Brown and MF DOOM on Demon Days > Snoop Dogg, De La Soul, Kano and Mos Def on Plastic Beach. Though Sweepstakes still totally rules, not seeing the hate for that song at all.

I think the hallmark of a fantastic album would be that everyone likes all the tracks but everyone also has their own favorites at the same time. Kind of like most Beatles stuff.

First time listening to it was pretty solid overall. I have a feeling it will grow on me exponentially just like Demon Days did. I like it though.

I agree, with MF DOOM really being the dealbreaker. But like I said earlier, current-DOOM would definitely be too aggressive for these chilled-out instrumentals. Born Like This was a wave of rage compared to stuff like Madvillain and DangerDoom.

Mos was freaking great on Sweepstakes though. A more traditional verse for him elsewhere would've been outstanding, though.

Ring a Bell for me
I tried, but I couldn't make it all the way through. By the time Empire Ants came on, I was just kinda bored, and ended up flipping to Neon Neon just to hear more Gruff.

In the end, there were a few tracks that were alright (Superfast Jellyfish), but the album as a whole just wasn't that great. I had this same problem with Demon Days too.

Mind you, if you like it, you like it. I'm not attacking the album, just saying it ain't my cup of tea.

I think that's more the hallmark of a masterpiece, which I wouldn't say Plastic Beach is. Still a great album nonetheless.

Yeah I think that's why I like this better than Demon Days. It actually flows and I can listen to the whole thing. Demon Days not so much.

Hmm, other than Stylo, this album sure is completely unmemorable after first listen. That can't really be a good thing in my opinion.

Don't know what this has to do with the thread but I want one too.

"Following the release of [Deltron 3030], all three members worked on the Gorillaz' self-titled debut album."

They do have a new album "coming soon," though:

As for Plastic Beach, I'm not sure how I feel.
I like most of the songs, but I haven't really settled on whether I like them more or less than their older stuff.

Perhaps. I liked a lot of their older stuff. This sounded similar but not as good, to me at least. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for it right now.

I enjoyed it, but I feel that it's a step back from Demon Days. I could listen to Demon Days as a full album and it was really cohesive, but there were alot of singles I could enjoy by themselves. Though saying that I still really enjoyed Rhinestone Eyes and Empire Ants.
