Hawkian

The Cryptarch's Bane
After a long, ignorant period of wishing I could listen to this during my commute in the car and being frustrated at the lack of Flash on my phone, I had a eureka moment, typed "NPR" into the Android Market, and was listening to the stream within 60 seconds. Damn why didn't I think of that sooner :D

Is the album being £3.99 on Amazon a limited time thing, and if so for how long?

Also too many editions :(

As someone who likes about 3 songs by Gorillaz (Clint Eastwood, Feel Good Inc, Tomorrow Comes Today) I didn't really enjoy the album. Stylo has an awesome beat and it's growing on me, everything else I'll pass on.

Can I also say that there is not enough To Binge love going around?

To Binge is great! I love it. I love the doubletracking of the girls vocals, but I'm a fan of doubletracking in general.

To Binge and Empire ants are beautiful beautiful songs.

When keepin it real goes wrong. Very, very wrong.
The album is all over the place and thats a bad thing its more like a demo mix tape than an album. Rhinestone Eyeys is a an awsome song tho.

I listened at work the other day but couldn't get a very good feel I guess since I have to play music pretty quietly since using headphones is out of the question. My first impression though was too much hip-hop. I might be completely off and enjoy it when listening with headphones, but I wasn't very impressed. I'd like a new record from The Good, The Bad and the Queen...
I'd give it a second listen. I think this is probably their least hip-hop focused record yet. Also for what it's worth I think the album has quite a bit of The Good, The Bad and the Queen influence. The second half of the album is dramatically different from the first.

Definitely doesn't give off the Gorillaz vibe enough, but ignoring that the album is okay. Nowhere near as well-done as Demon Days or self-titled.

Just downloaded the iTunes LP. Pretty cool. The artwork is nice. Includes 31 images, of which I've only seen like two online. They kinda give more background into the whole "Noodle is an android" stuff. Strangely, there are also shots of Noodle that look like she might not be an android and has been beaten with a black eye. Weird. Also, Russel looks like a giant in most of the images with Noodle riding on his head as well as him attacking the island.

It comes with a 15 minute making of video of the Stylo video which is interesting, the three currently available ident videos and the other videos of the island that were on the web site.

It also comes with 6 additional music videos for the songs, "Rhinestone Eyes", "Superfast Jellyfish", "Glitter Freeze", "Some Kind of Nature", "To Binge" and "Cloud of Unknowing". However, each of these music videos are pretty low budget and not really that good. The "Some Kind of Nature" is a stop-motion deal that is alright but the others are pretty forgettable. I kinda hope these aren't the official videos for these songs because they don't even feature any of the band members in any them.

There's also a digital story book that fleshes out the story a bit more but not much more than I'd already hear online. Also, there's a notebook that's pretty illegible containing notes that the band members must have made while creating the album.

As for the album itself, it's a grower. I'm pretty addicted to it.

I would too. Hugely underrated album.

after one listen i like it but i like demon days a little bit better. going to be playing this shit all day

when i'm not playing ff

Man, I was hoping they would have it in a Jewel Case. Call me old fashion but the Cardboard sleeves just feel super cheap to me. :(

EDIT: Unless it's an ironic commentary to go along with the message of the album. I still prefer Jewel cases though.

Don't know why I always think of Streets of Rage when I hear the intro of "Broken". The instrumental sure seems like it's something straight out of the game's soundtrack. :)

Fantastical

Death Prophet
First album of the Gorillaz where I like multiple songs on the first listen. Just listened to about 6 songs on my way to work and I like 5/6 of them and LOVED 2 (Stylo and On Melancholy Hill). I was a little nervous, but they done good. :D Melancholy Hill is soooo good. One of my favorite Gorillaz songs ever.

Over the last couple days I've started to dig Cloud of Unknowing.
Definitely agree. Really unique.

I'm really liking this album so far. And for anyone who was hesitant about the iTunes deluxe version, it's a iTunes LP so you get all the liner notes and stuff you would with the physical copy. I was pleasantly surprised that it was one. :D

I've only really liked Gorillaz singles, but this album is really good. The first few songs draw me in enough to finish the album and enjoy it all.

None of the songs are single material though, I feel. Fine by me, the whole product is fantastic.

So I get home, giddier than I've been in years for a new album. I see the Amazon envelope sitting there, throw my work stuff down, and make a B-line right for it. Immediately I realize whats inside is too thin. I open up the envelope and there's my cd in a shitty cardboard slip case generally used for samplers. What the f is this bullshit?!

Yeah I'm not a fan of it either. On my way into the house the disc slid out into the grass :\ I dislike this kind of case.

Perhaps the package is to keep that whole eco-conscious theme of the album? We should be lucky the album didn't come wrapped in two squares of toilet paper. :D

Some friends and I both went out and great the Special Edition of this album today and I personally love it. I know it's a different feel than Demon Days but that's a good thing. Each album presents a different vibe. I'm glad they went this route. If they did an album just like DD, people would complain about it being just like DD.

3030* But yeah, great album. Wish Del wasn't so shitty these days

Oh wow just looked that up, I thought it was a Gorillaz song called Deltron Zero. Its Deltron 3030 - Mastermind.

Oh wow, I just realized.

In light of the new Russell revelations in the liner notes and stuff, he IS "Melancholy Hill"!

MIND BLOWN!
Not quite sure what you mean here - is the song written to Russell or is he singing about how he wants to sit on Russell with somebody else?

He's the size of a hill and he's probably pretty bummed about it.

Every time I listen to Binge now I can't help but imagining the opening episode of the next season of Californication. Its like it was goddamned written for an opening Hank/Karen THIS IS WHERE THINGS ARE NOW montage.

To shift discussion to the story for a bit, if the gallery pics are any indication, not only is noodle alive, she's working as a two-bit performer in some show somewhere. Likely being beaten by a manager or a boyfriend if the black-eye is any indication. How exactly does Hewlett plan to further the story? Does he have some more pirate radio-esque stuff planned or something?

listened to it since it leaked pretty much, just received my package in the mail from amazon. Probably never open it :lol

Love the music though. Melancholy hill is tops.

I knew the Stylo video would make me finally change my avatar. :D

Agree with the majority opinion that this album is kind of a grower. Too many guests for my liking, and the hip hop bits aren't nearly as fluid and well done as those featured on Demon Days.

My favorites thus far are "Rhinestone Eyes", "Stylo", "Superfast Jellyfish", and "Empire Ants". Growing on me very quickly are "On Melancholy Hill" and "Cloud of Unknowing".

Fun album, good in its own right, less polished than Demon Days but overall I'm very satisfied with my purchase.

I love the album, even stuff like Sweepstakes that felt like a misstep has become oddly hypnotic on re-listens. I like it much more than Demon Days.

I agree with this. I'm finding most of the rap moments to be gratingly out of place. :(

Not a fan of no physical copy being locally released with bonus tracks. Someone needs to knock iTunes down a peg.

Great album though.

Damon's vocal on Broken sounds Bowie-esque to me, made me wonder how the actual Bowie would sound as a guest star...

Same here. Have they ever officially collaborated? (outside of that live performance of course)

It would be a perfect match.
