Just listened to the stream on NPR (now on listen #2) and I love the album from start to finish, which is something I can't say about Demon Days. Their self-titled album has been in my Top 10 ever since I first bought it, and Demon Days was a massive disappointment for me. Plastic Beach is kind of a nice combination of the first two albums, with all of the filler cut out. Really solid album, I'm so happy their back.

Watching the Stylo video again....

I guess 2D is the black smoke monster?

Ah, no. You see that mask in El Manana. He's the dude what killed Noodle.

Also, I think the song in the Russell trailer must be an iTunes excluso-track. I don't recognize it from the album stream.

Anybody else get a Road Rash vibe from the Stylo video/track?

All you old school Genesis gamers should know what I'm talking about :D

Man, you guys are really tempting me to listen to the stream of the album, but I want to wait until it's actually released on iTunes.
Only a week left!!! :O

The only thing that I could think of to improve PB would be another MF DOOM collab.

Though, going by his 2009 stuff, his current mood/style might be a little too aggressive for Gorillaz.

I dunno about this. It's good and all but i really don't feel it topping out Demon Days. Another couple of good full listens are required..

I love the atmospherics and synth work in 'On Melancholy Hill' brilliant. Reminds me of something from OK Computer.....

with a bit of Daft Punk thrown in there.

Really impressed with Plastic Beach.

well, I am up to Stylo on my first listen and I love it so far.

The song with Snoop was good. I was worried he wouldn't fit in on a Gorillaz album but I havent heard too much of his stuff before.

Rhinestone eyes was also wicked. Very Demon Days-like.

Stylo is awesome.

Great album, even though I haven't been feeling Stylo.

I haven't heard the second half of the album nearly enough, but Rhinestone Eyes is awesome as well as Superfast Jellyfish

Bruce Willis was something I wasn't expecting. I did a double take when I saw him.

I guess if he's doing things like this and surrogates he must really be desperate, as I can't see them paying him the half a million - a million dollars he would ask for this. (Maybe he's a fan?)

In any case, so glad they're back.

I saw them in Harlem on one of the first few nights, and got to meet Hewlett as he was buying drinks and needed someone to hold his current drink while he rummaged for money to buy another one, lol

With the announcement of multiple U.S. shows, I'm looking forward to getting to see them again sometime this year =) (And get priority access to tickets through the gclub)

Is there a site to buy an iTunes code online? Like get it emailed to you instantly? Maximus cards won't take Google Checkout and PayPal is blocked in this country. I want this album :(

Can't wait for this to drop... only one more week.

I became a huge fan of Gorillaz from their self-titled album and liked G-Sides, too. My faith in the band faltered a bit with "Laika Come Home" because I thought that was the new direction the music was going in and I wasn't into it but, when Demon Days came out, I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome.

Judging from Stylo, I think this new album is going to be another fine addition to their discography. Maybe not a classic like the self-titled album but still, it should be good.

Agreed. The Smoke part is amazing.

Stylo is hot. Bruce Willis? Niiice.

After reading up on the Wikipedia, I guess noodle didn't actually die in the El Menana video, but it looked like that to fake out some other guy who was trapped in the windmill as it crashed. Noodle had a parachute, but after surviving, she was grabbed by demons and dragged to hell. Noone really knows where she is after that, but the robot was constructed in her absence.

Oh snap, that's right! Man, this set of videos is going to be SO epic! Russell goes to hell to rescue Noodle? Maybe? Holy shit. So epic.

In Rise of the Ogre, Murdoc said she was on vacation because she needed to get away from it all. So I'm guessing they made up this whole "dragged to hell" thing recently.

The gorillaz story is loaded with continuity errors and unreliable narrators so who knows what the hell is going on. I know it's awesome, that's all I know.:lol

The whole Gorillaz mythology/story is kinda interesting but it's so far fetched that I can't really get into it. I mean, it's just stupidly bizarre with zombies, hell, demons, androids. I can barely detect any kind of coherent plot.

I really can't get into this album at all.

The first album was my favorite album for a few years; I was rocking it almost everyday for like 4 years.

Demon Days was cool, but that took a few listens to get into.

Plastic Beach just doesn't do it for me, at all. I don't know what it's lacking, but I don't think I'm going to bother with this album.

I wish they would go back to how the first album sounded; every song on that album is fantastic and I never skipped over any track. I liked the "Punk" stuff, the mellow tracks, and the just general raw feeling of it all.

This one seems tooooooo "pop" for it's own good, (I know this is what Albarn was going for) and the classical elements are not really their thing.

Sorry Gorillaz, I love you, but I'm staying away from Plastic Beach. :sad face:

The first couple of tracks sound good but I cut the stream short. I want to wait til next Tuesday to give the album a proper listening. I liked all of the Gorillaz albums. I like that they are all different and you just don't know where they are going. Once you let their album soak in your mind, you start feeling the groove they present on the cd.

Between this album, Broken Bells (Danger Mouse X Mercer from the Shins), Final Fantasy XIII, next Tuesday is going to be crazy.

On Melachony Hill is definitely my favorite track.

I liked Stylo the first time around, but the song is growing on me even more. The video was awesome. I was astonished by the sense of an actual 3D space occupying the car. The cameo was nice. The sense of speed when the camera was skimming the road and hearing the engines roaring...too awesome!

You're insane. This album is just awesome. It pretty much meets the first album in quality and originality in my opinion.

...:lol

I'm coming around to Snoop's track, even if it's only worthwhile as an intro.

Can't help feeling like I would love White Flag if it was instrumental :p

Really need to hear the second half of the album more. On my third full listen-through at the moment.

You can't really expect the story of a cartoon band to be serious or coherent.

Superfast Jellyfish is fantastic. So far the weakest song on this album is Welcome to Plastic Beach. The music on that track is good but Snoop had to go and fuck it up with his shitty rhymes.

Really? His rhymes weren't amazing or anything but I thought he was a great introduction to the world of plastic beach. I'd love to hire Snoop Dogg as a tour guide to whatever place :lol

On my second full listen so far, up to Glitter Freeze....I love this so much. It's #3 already on my AOTY list and may climb higher.

There are two stories in Gorillaz

1. They are just a band doing music videos and the music videos tell story 2 (ie the videos are just music videos)
2. All the crazy shit with demons and robots and windmills

I think Plastic Beach will be the combining of the two
