Graphical fidelity I expect next gen

Now that the PS5 Pro is out and we've seen pretty much what current gen has to offer, I'm pretty convinced we won't be seeing any revolutionary graphical improvements this gen any more. GTA6 is the last and only hope, but judging from the trailer, even that will offer more of less the same level of fidelity that we've seen for example H:FW push on the Pro.

Next gen will start 2027 or 2028 so this is quite early, but since I feel we've now seen what level of graphical fidelity this gen has to offer, I think it's time to look forward. What are the next visual leaps you expect when we get our hands on PS6 or Next Xbox?

Is it still going to be a struggle towards 4k/60fps with RT? Are we getting any meaningful leaps in image and frame generation? Will we finally see a push towards better animation, physics and AI simulation? What is the next lens flare, piss filter, bloom and chromatic aberration? Is AI going to affect how games are made? Are we going to see TLOU Remake of the Remastered 2?

The state of current gen is genuinely disappointing.
I just began playing DA:Veilgard and can hardly remember a title being so polished and running so flawlessly (on PC).
No stutters, no shit textures, no glitches... until I realized, that, from a technical standpoint, this a last gen game.
At this point of time we can be happy to get the old shit without hitches, which is rarely the case, sadly.

If you have nothing to say, stay out of the thread. Of course people feel disappointed when new tech doesn't meet expectations, games don't evolve and the whole business struggles with the economy. This is the worst gen in a long time (ever?) IMO, but I started this thread to look into future - not to dwell in the past.

I Dont Think So No Way GIF

Saying this is the worst gen is some hyperbole bullshit

You set the expectations yourself thinking every game should look like Avatar

Yeah, diminishing returns really hit hard this gen. I suggest console manufacturers extend the generation more to 10-12 years to give a breather for technology and allow bigger leaps in graphics

Edit: I think graphics are really good btw, Devs needs to optimize more to get good performance across all consoles and PC setups

I agree on this. Games in general look really good already. Just make sure the performance is great and add better animation, pshysics, interactivity and other fun systems. I hope AI driven animation is the big leap we get next gen.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
If next gen graphics are mostly driven by real-time AI generation, can we call it graphical infidelity instead? 🤔

Visual fidelity, at its best, is as good as it's going to be for a while. What you're going to see from now on, are techniques and technologies developed to make it easier/cheaper to achieve that visual fidelity. How can you improve on near perfect realism?

Graphics stopped improving by a major amount a decade ago and people haven't really accepted that. I would argue driveclub and the order look better than most stuff out today and those are a decade old. Has this ever happened?

Anyways the future is the graphical improvements via AI upscaling where I assume DLSS will be leading the charge. Bruteforcing via more hardware isn't happening.

Plenty progress still to be made but it wont happen soon since gen to gen advancenents slowed down a lot.
Next gen so ps6 will be around rtx 4090 in power, so around 3x what base ps5 is now, maybe if we lucky sony/amd engineers can push it to 4x base ps5 but thats it, in comparision ps1 to ps2 was 100x power jump.
In fact progress is so slow if u buy recently released bis pc cpu 9800x3d u are sure to exceed next gen console cpu by a lot, u will be futureproofed till 2036...

At this point I don’t think more powerful hardware is the answer beyond improving image quality.

In terms of character models, environments etc it’s more down to developer talent, budget and time.

I know many people despise it, but AI is absolutely going to be the most important technology looking into next-gen.

Whether it be physics, lighting, dialog, upscaling, frame generation, etc.. etc.. many, many things will benefit from AI, making development faster, cheaper, and improving visuals and performance in a plethora of ways without needing to leverage the local hardware.

I also think we'll start to see ray traced lighting be the default and only option in games during next gen, as this will also significantly speed up development time when we reach the point that developers no longer need to manually design all of the lighting and just let RT do it's thing.

I think Marvel 1943 is a good benchmark of what to expect many AAA games to look like during next-gen:

Borderlands is different, they use sobel style graphics to hide hardware limitations and draw infinitely large maps with complex animations.

I'm not in that state yet where I've beated most games, but if I were you, I'd step up and try Strategy, Mmos, sim. These genres will get you lost if you want this state so badly.

I created a mega thread where we talk about next generation graphics. This thread has almost the same exact title.

I hope not. This looks so cookie cutter boring. It's just actors scanned into a video game.
Looks too video gamey at the same time. I don't like it

Okay cmon you can say you don’t like the art style but the game is extremely pretty and technically impressive

So? "Next gen" ≠ "This gen". Different topic, different title.
