I hear you friend. And I respect your opinion.I'm with you on the James Gunn criticism, and Marvel Studios indirect criticism, but please look at the state of comic book video games. Spider-Man 2 2023 IS the best comic book video game of all time, and I haven't even seen or played it yet.
That's an indictment of the video game industry. I couldn't fairly praise this game if I wanted to, because there are so few comic book games, good or bad, to compare them to. Half the fucking comic book games are Spider-Man games themselves! Spider-Man or Batman make up a wild majority of the comic book games ever made, be it from guest appearances, or solo appearances.
Even if you wanna go to war with modern PlayStation, modern gaming, modern whatever, that is simply not a big sampling size to choose from to compare these games to one another.
Nope. But hey it's Guerrilla Games, Insomniac never had a chance...cross gen or notWatching the DF video on Spidey 2. Shit looks primo. It’s right there with Horizon.
In before Daddy comes in to pretend SM2 looks just as good ...
Im gonna wait till i get my hands on it, but the leap looks as big as Horizon when looking at cherrypicked gifs.Nope. But hey it's Guerrilla Games, Insomniac never had a chance...cross gen or not
I swear FF16 looks too good for it's own good.thank god for Japanese developers. I loved that they didnt just make Ada attractive but also added the geisha dress!
It does raise the question... what does Chief Dada even mean? You're gonna learn today, junior...
Go turn on Horizon burning shores in 30fps mode. First try it in game mode. Then, switch to vivid mode.
I swear FF16 looks too good for it's own good.
This is still the game that get the "cgi look" the closest imo. Not the fidelity.
I think it might be soft lighting or something. Or just these up close shots are pre-rendered and we are god damn fools.
My shots that I think are real-time
This little girl imo is the most impressive shot. Idk it's so soft
And these look like real cgi to me. Look at the hair. It's too good. We will know for sure on pc, which are real time and which are not.

Agreed.
Couldnt disagree more.
I think all you are seeing here is what was truly possible on the PS4 if first party devs didnt both chasing native 1080p resolutions all gen. HFW's base PS4 version doesnt just cull some foliage, hero lighting and peach fuzz, they reduced the resolution by a whopping 40% and then used all that extra GPU power to do all this extra stuff like improved lighting, textures, polygons, character animations, and flying mounts that were in the base PS4 version 1:1.
So many of these first party games like tlou2, ghost of tsushima, and days gone got downgrades in lighting, foliage rendering and animations from their original reveals, and i kept thinking why? why not just downgrade to 900p and enjoy all the extra horsepower available to you? the people who care about having native 1080p in their 1080p tvs in 2020 dont exist. People who care about blurry 900p images on their 4k tvs already have a Pro and now a PS5. Like 90% of the sales of Horizon FW were on PS5.
If SSM, PD, and other first party sony devs dropped down to 900p, we wouldve seen similar improvements in GOW, GT7 and Miles as well.
I think you all are going to be completely blown away when these guys make next gen only games. They will make games like GT7 and HFW look last gen as fuck.
Watching the DF video on Spidey 2. Shit looks primo. It’s right there with Horizon.
The hell's wrong with ya'll
No offense, but you've gotta be smoking something dude.I swear FF16 looks too good for it's own good.

I think you misunderstood me. I am talking about last gen games dropping their resolution from 1080p to 900p on base PS4. Not dropping PS5 game resolutions to 1080p. Personally i think 1440p is the sweet spot for next gen games. it doesnt look blurry or jaggied like 1080p does on 4k tvs.Dude ...nobody wants native 900p on PS5! You've made great points before about devs chasing too high of native resolutions this gen and how that's holding back what they can achieve, but now you're going to extremes trying to develop this concept that people want next gen visuals to the detriment of resolution.
As you've said yourself the people who bought ps4 pro and now ps5 want good resolutions. Have you not seen what's been happening to the image quality of some of the latest next gen only games? Star wars survivor, remnant 2, and Lords of the fallen are between 900p-1080p and they all suffer greatly in image quality.
I think it's easy for you to want the highest fidelity at the expense of resolution because you have a great PC that you can fall back on to get the best of both worlds. I think you need to be careful that's not skewing your desires a bit. Not that there's anything wrong with having you're own set of wants for these consoles but, you gotta realize most console gamers do NOT also have a 3080 (or better) and that you don't speak for most of us.
Sony obviously puts an emphasis on image quality. It's all about striking the best balance possible. God of War Ragnarok, Spiderman, Horizon say what you will about whether they're next gen or not, they are at least CLEAN. I recently bought Lords of the Fallen and it has a density of graphics that doesn't exist in some sony games, but it looks kinda rough at the same time. I realize I'm contradicting myself a bit because I'm always clamoring for Sony to do more but man .. nobody wants 900p or 1080p anymore! We accept it because we have no other choice. This is why I can't wait for Ps5 Pro.
Showing whats still work in progress early makes the final results we see today that much more better. Some of us said lately Insomniac games usually look better by the time they launch, not worse. This will go down as one of the worst showcases of a good looking game in history.
I see now why ND hasn't shown off their next game yet, let it cook.
Because plasmas Gymwolf is talking about existed long before these fancy computers that are using all kinds of different algorithms to improve picture quality on the latest tvs. The picture quality looks good because its being enhanced before its put on your screen. Which means its going through the tv's cpu and that is what introduces lag. plasmas had no where near as sophisticated chips as they do today.Wait there is such a thing? Shit this is something I have always, always thought about thinking “why cant they let us use any other mode but let us use the input lag of game mode?”. Shit, turned out to be a real thing. God damn why arent the others doing this?
sorry but that spiderman 2 vid is horrible
there's a HEAVY I MEAN SUPER heavy sharpening going on. and not a single mention of it. their IGTI is super blurry so naturally they think they can get away creating artificial sharpness with cheap sharpening filters
trees are mushy
buildings look unnatural and weird due to sharpening pass;
and somehow this is john's idea of "hair being excellent" in this game
their taa reconstruction literally breaks up apart
and once again, heavy artificial sharpnening creating artifacts in air and all kinds of textures and visuals
sharpening literally turns the natural skies into cardboards. it is what it is. sharpening is never a fix for "temporal blur".
but of course, AMD's CAS is the least artifact prone sharpening. BUT NO, they had to use that ugly sharpening filter they used for PC version. figured the went like "oh we get free visual clarity with our sharpening filter on PC, why not do the same on spiderman 2 on PS5 too!"
free visuals!!! with an INSTAGRAM filter...
What scene are you talking about? Is it not in the hour long gameplay leak that dropped?
No but I can send you link via dm.
WARNING IT IS A MAJOR SPOILER AND MOST LIKELY TOWARDS END OF THE GAME SO LET ME KNOW YOUR CHOICE...
It's pretty crap quality but I still think you can see the huge variance compared to most of the other released cinematic.
Jesus, the contrast between "OMG, this looks next gen, CGI, out of this world etc. " and "This looks shit, last gen " is even greater with the release of SM2.
The game looks good, but it's nothing groundbreaking.
Noticed some things that drag it down IMO in the DF video.
The cars here look bad and the shadow under them
And here, the smoke just looks terrible, with those edges that are really reminiscent of old smoke effects.
Other than that, I really like the water, in the name of all that is holy, someone finally noticed the reflections are not mirror like in large bodies of water with small waves.
Is the shadows under the car done by AO, GI or shadows? I wonder if RTAO wouldve helped here. its relatively cheap compared to other RT features.Jesus, the contrast between "OMG, this looks next gen, CGI, out of this world etc. " and "This looks shit, last gen " is even greater with the release of SM2.

I say go for 1080p max and let those its not enough for buy a PS5 Pro.Dude ...nobody wants native 900p on PS5! The alpha effects are dog shit accross the board with SM2. Like mostly opague effects similar to early 360 titles.Jesus, the contrast between "OMG, this looks next gen, CGI, out of this world etc. " and "This looks shit, last gen " is even greater with the release of SM2.

The car shadows looks like ps2 era "drop shadows" aka alpha masked sprites. Is the shadows under the car done by AO, GI or shadows? I wonder if RTAO wouldve helped here. its relatively cheap compared to other RT features.
Not to make excuses for spiderman, but for a game that has to handle ground level and sky level with the same level of fidelity, sacrifices have to be made somewhere. i dont ever see myself walking around the city unless im making gifs on gaf. they probably thought fuck the rt shadows under the car, and lets push the draw distance or some other visual feature instead. I personally wouldve preferred better modeled cars. they kind of stand out as cartoony.
Yes absolutely. No offense, but you've gotta be smoking something dude.
Those character models look like CGI to you?
He’s chasing the wrong criminal too. 60fps locked targets in performance mode is what’s knee capping games more than native 4k. Resolution doesn’t change how you design a game from the ground up. Frame rate absolutely can.Dude ...nobody wants native 900p on PS5! It's mad how the rain is behind him. Not a drop hits him.
Yeah, they look good for japanese standard but nowhere near the big boys.No offense, but you've gotta be smoking something dude.

Umm i was talking about panasonic oleds, my past oled had that function, so it is not impossible on oleds.Because plasmas Gymwolf is talking about existed long before these fancy computers that are using all kinds of different algorithms to improve picture quality on the latest tvs. The picture quality looks good because its being enhanced before its put on your screen. Which means its going through the tv's cpu and that is what introduces lag. plasmas had no where near as sophisticated chips as they do today.
you can still modify some settings to enable them manually. turn up colors to 55 or 60. vivid uses 70 colors but they are too much even for me. standard uses 60 but i prefer 55. if you are like represent and enjoy eye bleeding 70, go for it. Turn off HGIG and set Dynamic Tone Mapping and Dynamic Contrast to High. These three settings will get you a way better picture quality in game mode. the other stuff like noise reduction and smooth grading will be disabled in game mode, but they dont make a massive difference anyway.
One thing most people dont tell you is that OLEDs have insanely fast input response times compared to LEDs. so if you got an OLED and you are used to playing on LEDs then dont even enable game mode. just keep playing on standard and you wont even notice the input lag. HDTVTECH did a video on this and iirc he found the input lag on oleds was like 30 ms lower. need to find it to get the right number but the difference was massive.
I am going to be trying these values today on Game Mode even though I don’t like to turn it on but it does make a tad difference sometimes. I remember the plasmas were ahead of their time but in my opinion LEDs did make the picture pop more due to their backlighting which killed the plasmas off. Though if I aint mistaken Gymwolf was referring to the Panasonic OLED I guess not Plasma!I’m Because plasmas Gymwolf is talking about existed long before these fancy computers that are using all kinds of different algorithms to improve picture quality on the latest tvs. The picture quality looks good because its being enhanced before its put on your screen. Lumen took him 40 minutes to render while PT took 26 hours lol.
I really dont understand why they feel compelled to have us play as MJ. MJ has always been a secondary character in Spiderman. Shes not the lead. Shes there to advance Peter's arc and character development, nothing more. It seems they want her in to present the strong female character trope just to get woke brownie points, but there are other ways to do that. Use Black Cat in the main story and let us play as her with a new moveset for a couple of missions. It will provide variety and make far more sense than MJ's boring stealth sections in a superhero action game. Black Cat was so memorable in the DLC that im suprrised they didnt bring her back for the sequel as a playable character. Guess shes too hot and sexy for the base game. You people asked for nextgen features and insomniac double down with the mj incredible stealth missions in the sequel.
Best sony team confirmed.

Some cyberpunk and spiderman discussion going on in the other threads, but since its not allowed in those threads, i figured id move the discussion here in a thread where its more apt.
Spiderman or Cyberpunk?
i think both have strengths and weakness, but ngl, i did not expect spiderman to impress me after having played or rather spent hours benchmarking cyberpunk in path tracing.
This is honestly the best looking gif ive seen of spiderman and its up there with my experience 'playing' cyberpunk. gifs can be deceiving so i will reserve my final judgement but right now im impressed that its managed to impress.
I wish those buildings looked better, but the lighting is just so good. I did not expect this game to have this level of lighting fidelity.
