Grim Fandango Remastered |OT| The Excelsior Line Edition

Things like Ruvacaba is why I absolutely love time skips well done.
Yeah, I'm going through Act 2 now and Rubacava really is fantastic. Such a pleasure to explore, both due to the variety in locations and characters
and because you're filling in the gaps from the past year as Manny integrated himself into the community. Keeps you on your toes in terms of your place in the world, after being stuck at the bottom in Act 1 suddenly you're on top with a new set of established relationships
. Not to mention the whole Art Deco/Film Noir vibe of the place, which is still incredibly striking. One of the most memorable locations in gaming.

Game just froze on me when I tried to
fill the balloon up with foam stuff.
Lost quite a bit of progress. I can easily get it back, but it's a shame it glitches like that.

I'm really liking this game so far.

near the beginning
"Run you pigeons! It's Robert Frost!"
Lol. also the music is really good.

it doesn't look too bad for a remaster but why the fuck is saving the game so stupidly slow? So annoying.
and I have another problem, the text goes out of the TV screen when I have multiple options dialogues and when I use the inventory. I can still read it but I'd like to fix it. any way to do that? Didn't find anything in the options.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Any news when they're planning to patch the PS4 and Vita versions?

And woooo I got the plat.

Done with year 1. Still not sure with the beavers why I couldn't just
spray the fire extinguisher on them as I walk across the bone bridge (and why the extinguisher traps them in tar where they had been swimming fine before)
. Hmm...

They can only swim when they're on fire. When you extinguish them they just go and light themselves on fire again using another beaver in the background.

I think it's time to consult a walkthrough. Been almost a week and I haven't been able to get past this part.

I was sure I could beat the game on my own :(

Don't worry about reading a walkthrough at any point I think. Just play the game the way you enjoy it most. I'm almost at the end of year 2 now and I love this game just as much as I remember. It's been so wonderful to play it again.

I did not need a walkthrough until this point, and I still don't get it after reading the solution:
The fire beavers. I understand that I have to douse them with the extinguisher, and then throw the bones in the tar to trap them. However, there's always the one lit beaver in the background that looks impossible to douse. In fact, if I manage to get there, the extinguisher becomes ineffective and the beavers can't touch me either.

the last one cannot be doused, it's suppose to lit the beavers again or something (not in game).

Then what do I do? When I douse them they always run to the closest lit beaver, and they run much faster than me. I cannot simply douse one or two and then run to the riverside, can I?

You missed the proper place to do this. There is a specific location and sequence to do this, in that place. And you have all the required items.

ok I'll throw you a bone, go left, under the dam. Try working there something

There's a passage on the bottom left that is basically indiscernible to the eye... Really badly designed area IMO.

I love the puzzles in the game so far (in year 2 right now). Only had to look at a guide for one tiny thing that I didn't notice in year one (
Bolt on the server machine's door
). I like the challenge. I like how easy it is to search for stuff too just by swiping around on the Vita screen. Only problem is the fingerprints afterward D:

Got stuck twice so far. Just a heads up, make sure that the
Bone wagon
(can a vehicle be spoiler?) has enough clearance on either side for Manny to board (or he'll just walk on the spot instead of boarding - on vita anyway). Only other issue I've had is that in one part of the game, a specific item that was meant to guide you was too tiny to see on the vita screen. Couldn't tell the front from the back. Figured it out eventually though. Visibility is also why I prefer playing the game in original mode instead of remastered. Things stand out more.

Man, year 2 looks awesome!

dofry

That's "Dr." dofry to you.
Did my first playthrough of the game. Was almost as good as before, but I still remembered most of the game. The voiceacting is great and Glottis is a nice character as well as many others. Felt so refreshing to have such a good story presented so nicely.

Some nitpicking would go to items not being easily visible in some locations (
sign in forest wasn't easy to see until I went close to the TV, ladders weren't easily visible in the dark"coffee alley" in Year 4 and safe drilling with Bust-all wasn't also easily visible due to close objects that Manny locked onto. I also missed a corner inside the safe room with the axe because I just didn't know it existed. Running around many rooms is essential. Salvador letter in Manny's office in year 2 got lost on me too until I checked online for hints
). Very essential items. I learned in Year 4 that the O buttons is for picking up items too, not just cancelling, but that was explained in the options. I spent 30 minutes thinking the game is broken because I could not pick up the
Snow machine thingy.
..

Otherwise great. Will play again for commentary. And that stupid tank control trophy. Damn Tim.

I'm just loving my time with this game so far. Taking it slow and easy, and enjoying being able to see it from a new perspective after all these years. The commentary adds some good value for someone who's played through it already, and the improved character models and lighting take off a lot of the aging. I'm also really happy to see so many people on GAF taking to the game as well.

The general reception seems to be good, so I'm thinking another game in the Land of the Dead isn't such a far off concept anymore.

Good call, that will be the next step for Double Fine. I'm wondering how this game is going to be handled since its a lot older than Grim... completely redo the artwork and interface, or take a minimalist approach?

Finished it yesterday, amazing as I remember it, actually I could appreciate the writing much more than I did when I was 15 years old and the trophies helped me to find out a few surprises I didn't know about it. Now I just need to do a speed run with tank controls for platinum =)

Btw there's a point about the story which in the past I didn't put much thought into:
Domino and Hector, do they actually know that they can't leave the Land of the Dead for ''heaven'' even with real N9 tickets?
Based on the dialogues in year 3 Domino seems to think that it's not possible, the end of the journey reserves hell for people like him so instead of going to hell he prefers to ''make the land of the dead livable'' on his own terms, robbing and disposing of good souls and getting rid of other bad people like him making them believe they can reach the Ninth Underworld anyway thanks to a fake ticket.
But eventually it's clear that Hector has made up a double scam reselling fake N9 tickets, he keeps the real tickets for himself with the hope he can leave the land of the dead in someway....but HOW? I don't think that this point is made clear by the game or I haven't noticed.

I am feeling a bit proud of my hardcore 90's gamerness at the moment. I just worked out the Forest Maze puzzle in about half an hour without using any hints or walkthroughs, and this is my first time playing the game.

Fuck yeah.

Alright, this ticket machine puzzle.

It makes sense but if you haven't looked at the right things or remembered some seemingly throwaway comments, you're screwed.

I solved it by brute forcing it.
fortunately they were quite generous making it the second week
. I think the metal detector was tougher.

That puzzle can be hard but they give you all the elements to solve it
second week in the cat case/shrine tag, race 6 is in the picture. It was hard to get the cat hat thing on tuesday because of the apparently random comment about cat hats not being available until tuesday which you had to connect to the picture showing people with cat hats.

The only puzzle I needed to look up in a guide was in year 3....
that damn combination lock....you keep thinking you have lined up the bolts in the wrong direction hence they don't remain in place....and you actually have to keep them in place it with your scythe. LOL

On year 4 without outside help but from what I've been reading this is the chapter that a lot of people had to look up something so we'll see. I'll be a little disappointed if I can't complete it on my own.

Sounds like you have overscan, change your tv settings from 16:9 display to just scan or 1 to 1 pixel mapping depending on what your tv calls it. Or use ps4 system settings to resize screen, though changing tv options will be best.

If it's not that then I have no idea

A couple of days ago I finished my second play-through in order to get all the achievements (Steam ver) that I've missed the first time. Can't believe I forgot about
Maximino and the Rusty Anchor song!

This game made such an impression on me when I first played it back in 1998 that the solutions to the puzzles are tattooed on my brain. I wish I could forget everything and start fresh again! I envy all you people who have just discovered this game!

Also, I think Year2/Rubacava is in my favourite setting in a video game, ever.

Year 4 is easier than 2 and 3 imo.
I'd rate the overall difficulty as 2>3>4>1. With 2 being on top because Rubacava is huge with lots of things to do.
Year 4 is kinda linear and you don't have this huge inventory to handle so even a brute force approach here and there will help you going on without help.

The comment isn't random. One of the NPCs says it every time you talk to them.

Yeah I meant random in the sense that you think it's mostly a joke line and not an important info.

There's a bug where Manny can't move, played more than 5 hours, he's stocked in the elevator :/
I dont want to start from zero.
I'm in the chapter in his new cafe, finished it and have to go to the ship.

First time I played Grim Fandango was years ago. Only adventure game I like. I mean I really do likeit. Only problem was I never could get passed practically the beginning of the game.

Fast forward to today, I'm excited to play this classic again only to be stuck at the exact same part...
I'm up to the message tube puzzle. I'm guessing my next step is to figure it out. I already jammed it with the packaging chemicals and now have access to it. I place the ace card in the tube but there's too much pressure. I have no idea what to do next.

Not asking for help and I'm trying my best to not look up a guide... But damn this is frustrating.

I had a similar bug in the PS4 version, year two, Manny gets stuck on the ladder in the kitchen of the club.
Press X to try to get out, even if the animation seems stucked let it play for a while without continuing to press X furiously (which makes the stucked animation start again). It worked for me, even pressing the Playstation button has worked sometimes.
BUt you should save more and in different slots btw.

Playing on the PC, I'm just switching between the more intuitive (and surprisingly modern) tank controls, and then using the mouse when I need more finesse. It's a good system.

To quote Tim, the only reason people get stuck in adventure games is because they missed something in another room.

Well I figured it out. I basically did every combination on every single interactble object lolol. So glad I can move on now :)

Manny told you what to do about that right at the beginning of the game btw ;)

I know
mark the cards. I thought about that thinking I needed some marker or pen... Not a hole puncher lol.
I guess that's a lesson for me in how I should handle the rest of the game.

Absolutely!!
I can tell you that there's something about that puzzle you just solved that you will have to remember in year 4 :D

Grim Fandango is all about taking notes of all the hints given during dialogues, puzzles are not difficult per se. You don't have difficult codes to decipher or math games to solve as in other series like Broken Sword but you need to pay attention and have a good memory without understimating anything.

That's what I keep doing. Using the mouse to find and access those small interaction points and easily navigating to and from camera perspectives. Tank control for everything else.

Pro tip: Hold shift when turning and when clicking with the mouse, will make everything go faster.

The tree puzzle has almost completely turned me off from this game....seriously, I understand what I need to do but the controls are complete shit and making this 10x more difficult then it needs to be.

S to go backwards W to go forwards (back and forward respectively for analog controls).

How are you struggling?

Myself, and many others, actually had a visual bug on that puzzle that did cause some issues. I generally went forward and backward quickly to get the bug moving, then it worked as normal.

So the game won't let me progress past the race photo puzzle.

When I hand over the betting stub to the guy in the window he just makes a joke about it being a counterfeit ticket and leaves. I even looked up a guide to make sure I had the right solution and I do. Tuesday week 2 race 6.

I've quit and reloaded the game and it still happens. Anyone else run into this?

I see, I'll try that.

btw the game crashed 2 times already, at least I'm saving often, even if it takes 2 minutes for saving a single time. meh
