GTA V PC Performance Thread

Same here. New patch and performance seems to jump between something like 30-45 and 60 often. I can just turn the camera and the FPS plummets and then back to 60. I haven't played in weeks yea but I don't remember this type of performance.

I'm so surprised by the fact that this game is so damn well optimized. It runs like a charm on my two years old GTX 660 OEM with reasonably high settings.

Must be the patch. The ~800MB patch made all stuttering disappear for me. Next day a 16MB patch had been downloaded and I now get the same frequent stuttering I got before the 800MB patch. Very annoying.
 
I restored update.rpf in the GTAV folder, pc_settings.bin and cfg.dat in the Documents folder and nothing's changed, still CTDs after the intro screens. I can't restore common.rpf because OpenIV backed it up as a folder which for some reason is a lot bigger than the RPF file. To make matters worse, I remember making a registry edit to minimize resources for the launcher and don't know how to safely delete those. It's possible the regedits have nothing to do with the crash since it's a Windows thing. Point is, my files are fucked and I need to know how to redownload PARTICULAR corrupted files or verify integrity cache on a non-Steam copy. Last possible choice is to download the whole game again.

1. What are the most common causes of a crash after the intro/legal screens?
2. How do I restore corrupted files without downloading the whole game again?

Micro stutter fix finally found (for me anyways).

Such a ridiculously dumb solution. Still can't believe this is what ends up working after 2 months of troubleshooting. Saw this random post on steam forums nobody would actually take seriously, but I thought fuck it, why not?

These are the steps. Seriously. Simply play offline.

1) Start Steam in online mode
2) Pull the plug on your internet
3) Launch GTA V

Just tried this a total of 6 (six) times to make sure it wasn't just a fluke btw.

Test 1: Ethernet connected. Random, frequent micro stutters w/ FRAPS showing slight drops from 60fps to 57-59fps simply driving around city in rain. Felt very jarring even w/ G-sync.
Test 2: : Ethernet disconnected. Perfect, buttery smooth 60fps w/ FRAPS locked at 60. Same load point, driving in same exact location in rain.
Test 3: Re-connected ethernet. Stutter.
Test 4: Ethernet disconnected. Zero stutter.
Test 5: Re-connected ethernet connected. Stutter again.
Test 6: Ethernet disconnected. Zero. Fucking. Stutter.

This is w/ 353.12 hotfix drivers, i7 3770 (stock), 970 FTW+, 16GB RAM, SSD, max pre-rendered frames: 1, 144hz g-sync monitor w/ in-game refresh rate set to 60hz and refresh rate in Nvidia Control Panel set to "application controlled".

Someone please try this and report back.

Strange you were experiencing stutters in the first place. I also have a G-sync monitor, but I haven't expierenced any stuttering at all. I only get stuttering when I have Self Radio on, but that's a CPU issue.

I just read about this fix yesterday as related to the new I'll Gotten Gains update/patch but I haven't tested it. It's been reported that the problem is probably related to Social Club rather than the game itself. As far as I've understood this fix does nothing for online players though... I never had any stutter before but after the new DLC came out I started to get stutters which I were able to fix by rolling back to the official GTA V drivers.
 
I thought I was going crazy, but seeing others having the same problem is restoring some of my sanity but my frustration increases.

Game was running smooth before, but the new patch introduced a stutter that's really noticeable while driving. Lowering the settings doesn't make a difference.

What's weird is that the stutter is present while using a gsync monitor. I thought that maybe gsync was disabled at first but I checked all the settings. The only change from when it was running smooth was the new patch.

Apparently rolling back to the official GTA V drivers didn't fix stuttering for me... Just played a couple of hours and it was definitely still there and it even got worse the longer I played. Trying to play offline is not an option to me since I only play online mode :( Rockstar has to patch this ASAP.
 
Did some mucking around with the post fx setting to see if I can eliminate motion blur. Having it on ultra (as I always do) and the motion blur slider turned all the way down still shows motion blur. If I switch to normal post fx the motion blur is eliminated, but then I lose out on all the other effects I actually like. Has no one else noticed this? I can't find any results for it on Google and no one has mentioned it here. Seems odd that I would be the only one experiencing it.

I'm on a GTX 780 with 353.06 drivers (latest).

P.S. Anyone experiencing stuttering since the game patch, seriously, try changing the mouse input to "direct". I've read several people saying this has fixed their problem. It certainly worked for me.

That's a different type of stuttering. One related to mouse input.
It doesn't fix the other type of stuttering that is affecting the renderer.

Couldn't hurt to try it anyway, though. I'm sure a lot of people here wouldn't be able to recognize stutter in a game as being related to mouse input or the renderer. I certainly didn't.

What I find weird in my case is that the fix I employed is actually quite old. I didn't have the issue until the most recent game patch, but an old solution fixed the problem.

I had the mouse stutter from day one which I fixed by setting the mouse input to "direct input". One way to tell them apart is to log your framerate. If the framerate drops when the stuttering occurs it's a sign that the renderer is affected. The mouse stuttering doesn't cause a drop in the framerate.

Just figured out a solution for playing the steam version in offline mode btw!
Windows doesn't automatically allow social club in the firewall. Manually add that and start the game in online mode. Then exit att restart steam in offline mode and it works.

UPDATE:
The theory of an online connection and social club causing stuttering is true!
Booted the game up in offline mode and the game doesn't stutter frequently like it did in online mode.
So something is indeed up with social club it seems. Someone should report this to Rockstar.

I believe Rockstar is well aware of this problem as a vast amount of GTA V players have had this problem, looked in to it and reported it to Rockstar. Hopefully the fix will come soon...
 
I feel like the problems I'm experiencing are even worse than the "stutter" everyone is talking about. I used to stutter prior to nvidia's latest driver update, which finally let me play at 60 fps smoothly, and then my game got even more broken once 1.27 hit. I basically dip from 60 to 30 fps and anywhere in between after 30 seconds of playing. It's awful, and no amount of setting tweaking has gotten rid of it. I've tried playing in offline mode (with the commandline method) and still, nothing helps. even setting vsync to half has me dropping from 30 fps to 24 and back up. Insane.

Edit: I used DDU and did a full clean install of the latest nvidia drivers, and the game is smooth as silk. Well, it was for one play session, but I'm wary of this game because every time it seems like I fixed it it breaks again.
 
Can someone do me a huge favour and test if motion blur has been messed up since the patch? It's kinda driving me nuts.

It appears to be on with post fx set to ultra, even if the slider is all the way down. Setting post fx to normal eliminates blurring but also eliminates several pieces of eye candy I actually want on.

It's easy to see by panning the camera around your player rapidly.

V-Sync enabled in 3D settings (with G-Sync on, this caps the framerate to within a G-Sync-able range, i.e. 144fps)
V-Sync off in game

Tearing. Can't seem to fix it. I'm not even going to touch the game without G-Sync - I forgot how bad tearing is.

Any ideas? Searching NeoGAF multiple times takes forever and I've had no luck finding a solution.
 
Mark me down for experiencing the intermittent hitching while driving. Only noticed it today but I haven't been playing much lately. I stress intermittent, too - can't find any pattern to it.

Make sure the game isn't running borderless (unless you have the borderless G-Sync enabled)
 
I'm lttp... bought this game a few days ago (after I came to terms with that BS steam "sale".. grrr)...

So I'm working with a 970 and i7 4970 16MB... cant seem to get it over 30 fps with a mix of very high and high (except for cutscenes, it'll shoot up to 60) which seems... a bit off. It should be able to handle more than that, right?

Biggest offenders in this game are anything in the advanced video options (especially extended distance scaling) and grass quality. Even with a 970, you're gonna have to make some sacrifices to get a stable 60fps. If you have grass set to ultra, bring it down to very high and see what results you get.

Sounds like you've got vsync on and your framerates aren't hitting 60+, so it caps you at 30.

And yes, much lesser rigs can manage 60fps in this game, so you need to turn some settings down as Iced says. In addition to those that he mentioned, I'll say that MSAA/TXAA are extremely costly, so while I'm not say you have to turn those down/off, mess around with them and see what you think.
 
I am definitely getting stuttering like others have mentioned. It goes away when running in offline mode like has also been mentioned.

Hopefully this is fixed soon.

I can't believe this hasn't been fixed. I shelved the game 3 weeks ago because of the stuttering introduced by the most recent patch. I'm not going to pull the ethernet cord just to play a game, Rockstar.

It's because of Social Club while being online. Run Steam in offline mode and it's smooth as butter. Really weird they haven't fixed this yet.

It is even more ridicules considering I was playing fine before Witcher 3. I was going to start playing again to finish it but I guess I'll have to wait.

@Iced I am playing a non-Steam version and it does allow to play offline without an internet connection.

It's enough to run Steam in offline mode. A hassle sure, but it eliminates the stuttering.

Awesome! Could you tell me where it is? When I launch GTAV it just signs me in automatically. If I hit cancel the game just closes.

Edit: Actually, more specifically, the game crashes saying the launcher has stopped working.

Further edit: I mean in offline mode without me having to yank the cord.

Oh heck, just one more edit: Strangely if I disable the ethernet adapter within Windows, I am given the option for offline mode but it still attempts to activate the game, and thus won't open. Only when I yank the cord will the game start up. And yes, this fixes the stuttering issue 100%.
 
Are the Nvidia GTA V drivers still the best ones performance wise? I've noticed that while my gameplay is generally smooth the cutscenes have become stutter fests. It doesn't seem to matter if I turn settings down or not. Anyone know a trick/fix to make them smoother?
 
The game (mainly online) is beyond saving.

There are hackers in every single match, everyone is getting millions handed out, money is now useless, and the lag is ridiculous.

It can still be fun with friends but R* really dropped the ball.

Create a file named "commandline.txt" in the GTA V root folder and paste "-scOfflineOnly" into it without the quotation marks. It should force the game to start in offline mode.

Not sure about non-Steam versions, but I had to manually add and allow social club in Windows firewall because it wasn't added automatically. Once I'd done that I ran the game in online mode which now managed to activate it over social club. Before I allowed it in my firewall social club couldn't do it's own activation, but I could still play it.

So after activating it like this I could start it in offline mode. Check if it's allowed in your firewall perhaps?

Holy shit. I was just coming into this thread to say that there is a new consistent hitch that happens every 5 or 6 seconds that wasn't there the last time I played (it's been awhile) and I saw this conversation. This fixed the stutter. That really sucks that the online component is causing that annoying bullshit.

Also, as someone with GSync and SLI (DSR doesn't work in this case), the ingame downsampling option is really nice and is the best way for me to clean up the aliasing.
 
Very late to the party on this one but I had some trade in credit sitting around on a gamestop card and decided "Why Not?".

So far I have pretty much everything cranked up and it's pretty stable aside from the odd hiccup here and there, pretty stable 60fps at 1080P.

Core i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz
12gb of Ram

Honestly I didn't think it would be a huge jump over the PS4 version but it is. Holy shit does this game look INSANE on PC and I'm doing it at double the framerate, it also seems to have higher quality sound too.
 
Getting a really weird 60fps - not smooth at all, especially noticeable on foot in first person with a weapon and moving/looking around fast.

With a 980ti. Locked 60fps, it's not dropping when this happens, which is not all the time but pretty close enough to it.


Trying the offline command doesn't really seem to do anything for it. Also doesn't skipping the landing page cause crashing or was that bug fixed?


---Fixed by switching to directx mouse input instead of raw :S
 
The game stutters like crazy these days. Every 2 seconds this little skip. It's super annoying.

Pretty bummed because a month ago the game ran great and smooth 60fps after a couple of patches, then I went on vacation for a few weeks, came back and booted the game up and now it runs with this annoying stutter that a patch must have introduced. Argh.
 
Yeah. Game finally ran nearly perfectly for me about a month ago then along came new patches and drivers to ruin it. Today the stutter was so bad the game was unplayable.
