*sigh* Right then.
Anyone else have some impressions to post?
I can post more random stuff! Still all based off the demo.
The music loops a bit differently. This is probably a good thing! High quality, but no unnatural stops like old streamed-from-CD stuff was.
Some voices sound different, and some new voices have been added. It's similiar to KoF XIII's new voicework; it leaves a lot of the old stuff, but also gives higher quality recordings, or alternate ones. I can't tell if there are any totally new actors, as the new voices mesh rather well in tone and rhythm.
Sword and Normal Han are a bit different. In Remis mode, Normal Han's Y attack is a kick. Sword Hand's is the ->+weak attack move that regular Han has in normal mode, but seemingly not in remix. This actually is pretty cool though, makes Sword Han a bit more unique!
The Remix mode might as well be a massive SF-style rebalance + mini sequel. It plays like Bleach DS in many ways. Universal options are very welcome, and these systems see well thought out and developed. It seems to give new wrinkles to each character you can play in the trial. You can feel changes in things as minor as frame differences on attack start/recovery, to as large as new uses and applications for old skills, and the thought put into giving characters a new combo series/3 button attack system.
For instance, just the fact that you can dash+rapid punch with Ginjiro now, since his old -> + Weak Attack is now on it's own button, gives you new ways to dash in and attack, that come in VERY handy on the Hard difficulty, which starts unfair for EVERYONE except Sword Han, since the blade gives him a generous all-stat boost.
The more I read the new writing, the more I like it. It's a little odd in places (just like the old one), but watching Zur say something to Valgar along the lines of "You're my Assistant... Emphasis on the first 3 letters..." reminds me so much of Working Designs, who pulled a similiar "Yes, Commander Focker..." joke in Vanguard Bandits, that it's kinda pleasant. Firmly rooted in that age where subtly slipping stuff past the radar was more enjoyable than just flat out saying and doing stuff, like they'd do now.
The remix graphics look great on SD, btw. It looks more like a redraw than a crappy filter. Lines are very crisp, the pencilshade effect is actually quite nice, and it makes the larger, once horridly pixely giant characters look as if they're just made at native resolutions.
I've now spent hours just picking apart the demo... it's just THAT good. I think they put a good amount of love in this port, as this feels closer to "what would GH be like, if it was remade today?" than AGH ever did.
I'd just love to see MORE now! Not only because this is a demo, but because I love all the gameplay, art, and personality just as much as I did in 1996. It's great to prove that nostalgia doesn't cloud a games quality and value; some games just ARE that good, and there's no reason something this well made should have ever been missed by any who love this style of gameplay and genre.
Eh, that's enough gushing, though, lol. I'd really like to see what many others think about the changes, especially those who have purchased the full game already...
