[Guardian] Is there even any point in making more powerful games consoles?

not true plenty of GREAT small games that never sell because there is no marketing and you don't know they exist. You're a niche hardcore gamer. They don't make their careers off you they need the mass market.

True. A game being known was a given. As long as people know it exist, a game being good is the first order of business.

In theory I'd be fine with capping system power now, and letting devs compete on quality and polish instead of graphical bells and whistles that tank framerates.

Unfortunately the state of modern gaming development means that the power bumps go a long way towards covering dev laziness/incompetence, making games that ran in a compromised fashion on the old hardware run better on the new. We need the brute force because there seems to be a dev talent void at the moment.

I stopped reading once I glanced over this:

“I also found Layden’s statements quite validating, because I simply do not care about tech specs. I am the least technically minded games journalist I know, and have often felt as if I was in the minority. I would struggle to reliably tell the difference between 50fps and 60fps, or between 4k and 8k resolution”

You don’t say that you are the least technically minded games journalist.

The ultimate dream is everything path traced, everything real time for perfectly dynamic worlds. So yes, we need better hardware. Either that or AI hardware good enough for real time neural rendering, at that point you can render anything.

As long as there are games not running at 60 fps there is absolutly aa point in making stronger consoles.
Anything with good enough graphics is going to run sub 60 fps.

60 fps is a design choice based on what you are willing to sacrifice.

The ps2 had TONS of 60 fps games.

Everyone that thinks like you probably had a horrible time playing N64, PS1, PS2 and PS3 games. It seems that the "fun" part should come first, but that's just me.

Kind of.

Resolution is overrated and a waste of resources that could actually go toward increasing detail and framerate.

That’s where the misunderstanding happened: it’s important not to assume what others think or feel, as opinions and preferences can be deeply personal and varied.

When I first started playing video games, every experience felt exciting and new. Over time, though, my tastes became more refined—I began to understand what truly resonated with me and what didn’t, much like developing a palate for wine. The first glass is thrilling, unique, and full of discovery, but as time goes on, you learn what you prefer, forming a distinct sense of taste. Now, I know what I want in both games and wine; it’s no longer just about the novelty but about depth and personal enjoyment.

And for me a lot of the fun comes frome a smooth experience and tight gameplay.
