They're struggling quite a bit with the huge player base, been over 5days now and basic functionalities are still not working :
Mail - down
TP - down
Guilds - still half bugged
WvW - ranks/points still half bugged

That's quite a lot of major functionalities not working right :(

And now login server is down to finish it off. LOL

Guilds are fixed now.
They reset WvW I believe during yesterday as well.

The TP has been up and down, they're struggling with the load to the server.

The Mail system was brought offline so they could work on authentication.

I'm really impressed, their systems design is well thought out to allow them to bring up/take down these subsystems without taking out the game itself.

A lot of the time these features are down I am pretty sure a badly engineered game would be entirely offline (I'm looking at you Diablo.....).

The lack of mail/TP/etc. is especially bad considering ArenaNet's years running the first Guild Wars. This is something I'd expect from a novice company that didn't spend enough time in beta.

It's funny how disconnected the lack of player commerce makes you feel.

so like
we seem to be constantly dominating WvW
this korean guild called WM are running around as like 20 people just smashing everyone
so theres almost no point in WvW right now :(

Really? Where do I go to do this.

Press "O". There should be a tab on the left side called "Currency exchange" or something like that (my client is in Spanish). There you can exchange gems for gold and viceversa. I assume that there is a loss in that exchange for the service.

Tier 2 cultural weapons in Hoelbrak are only 21 karma now, lol.

Bought a couple but deleted them again, don't want to get banned for exploiting or whatever.

I don't know much about this but aside from a few small changes and no monthly fee, is this pretty much just MMO at its core? Like is it still "Kill 10 X" and that sort of stuff or are there are interesting and creative quests too?

From what I've seen it's the usual MMO quests.

So yeah, been watching videos of this and it looks great. I'm looking for some exploration open world action.

My question is, how bad will it feel if I commit to never doing 'raid' type play sessions with this game?

Bought the game yesterday, but unfortunately the server where all my friends and my guildmates are playing has been "full" since I bought the game (Riverside). I've read that it is possible to switch servers for free for some time, but I fear that if I settle now, I will be cut off forever.

Is there any way to tell when that day will be?
Also, are there any server rankings for WvWvW? If I decide for an alternative, I don't want to blindly join the worst pvp server out there.
I was thinking about gandra, so I can at least join the gaf guild if switching fails, but I haven't seen anything about the wvwvw status of that server yet.

I'd never had imagined that buying gw2 can be such a stressful process.

I think they are substantially different from "the usual MMO quests".
Both in the way they are handled, the variety of objectives to complete the goal, the seamless group play and branching of events that actually change things in the world, make it quite a bit different.

To call it "usual MMO quests" is doing the game a massive disservice, and it's a really reductionary way to look at them.

I don't plan to do raiding as I never like doing that in a MMO. I seem to be one of the few people that enjoy leveling characters so I plan to at least level two classes and maybe participate in some end game stuff.

You go to area, kill x mobs or collect x items. Sometimes you escort a caravan, sometimes the area can be taken over, or you get chains. It's still the same MMO stuff, just presented differently.

At the moment you can only tell by actually being on the server, or on a server which is against the server.

My server(Desolation) is versus Gandara at the moment, and it's been relatively good fight. We were winning the other day, but last night in the early hours of the morning when the score reset they were winning.

Feel kind of sorry for the other server against us both, they're a low population server who don't really stand a chance.

As for server swapping, you're best to try and swap servers at a time when no one is on, ie early hours of the morning. You stand a better chance of it not being "Full" then.

No raiding in the game at all. I believe the end game is pvp and 5 man dungeons, which seem to be insanely difficult from what I've read (which is a bit disappointing to me since I hate wipe fests).

This is still a very, very distilled down view of the quest systems.
It's not incorrect, but does not represent (at least not for me) how I experience the questing and exploration. Not at all.

I can only imagine the pressure that ANet employees have right now :|

we were able to talk with an ANet developer in local map chat, she said there were still plenty of people in the office at 1AM trying to fix stuff, amount of traffic is the biggest problem

edit: this is about the trading post since it's game wide

It does for me.

Going in, I was expecting something genuinely different from GW2, but everything I've done in the game so far (lvl 20 ranger) has been the usual MMO fare. Sure, quests have multiple objectives, but so far they've almost all been about kill x, gather y, destroy z until the progress bar is full. Sure, quests start without requiring you to talk to an NPC, but that just eliminates one step from the usual MMO cycle. And sure, sometimes you stumble upon some dynamic event that's, again, nothing more than killing lots of mobs with other players (sometimes while protecting/escorting something) or taking down a big mob, after which you get an arbitrary amount of xp, money and karma and maybe even some loot if you're lucky. So far I haven't seen anything that would really set GW2 apart from WoW, for example.

And I don't really get what all the talk about exploration is. Sure, the world is big and looks impressive, but what exactly makes exploring any more interesting in this game than in any other MMO?

Dunno Ikuu's experience seems similar to my experience as well. I do prefer this structure over WoW's though. Since it's more akin to a traditional grind and thus more focused on killing rather then running from A to B all the time to accept quests and pick up rewards. I do like story sequences and the pvp though. The whole questing thing was way too over hyped by people on this board.

Till now I've had way more fun with Tera's lvling experience(I played on a pvp server). Not because of the quest structure mind you(straight up WoW ripoff in Tera's case). The combat and enemies are simply a lot better add to that the excitement of world pvp in the mix and it was way more fun and exiting experience for me.

Reminds me of that "why was RE4 hailed as a great game" thread recently.

Go in, shoot stuff go to the next area.

Go in, kill stuff go to the next area. Damn RE4 and its typical MMO questing bullcrap!

There is all manner of hidden things in every single zone in this game. Hidden dungeons unmarked on the map that end in treasure chests, jumping puzzles that end in all kinds of things (generally unmarked unless they end in skill points), events that don't chain from common areas, achievements for finding particularly hidden areas, monsters granting more experience the longer they have been in the world without being killed... there is no shortage of reasons to be out and exploring the game world. I don't think I've played any MMO prior that encouraged it as much as GW2.

Edit - that's ignoring the obvious completion reward for exploring all the marked areas in each zone.

I like how the dynamic quests work, makes the gathering of materials in a cleared zone not boring, like the Centaur vs Seraph, sometimes I pass by an area that was captured by the centaurs and the quest is to drive them out and destroy their weapon racks, sometimes it is defending waves of centaur, but yeah it is still basically killing lol

oh yeah I love going out way to areas and killing stuff, and the bonus XP is greater than the main XP because of that monster living for a long time in that area

makes the world more alive imo

Pretty useful info here: http://www.reddit.com/r/Guildwars2/comments/z1poz/guild_wars_2_status_wednesday_august_29/

Arena Net Team said:
This is the current status of the most important issues we're tracking with Guild Wars 2 live service.

Account security
- We're seeing an uptick in reports of account theft and attempted account theft. We believe hackers are using databases of email addresses and passwords stolen from other games and web sites, and pre-existing trojan horses, to search for matching Guild Wars 2 accounts which they attempt to compromise. To prevent this, we have temporarily disabled the "reset password" feature, and we're working to bring email authentication online. To protect yourself, please ensure that you use a unique password for Guild Wars 2 that you don't use for any other game, email account, forum or web account.

Email authentication - Email authentication is a feature that notifies you if someone tries to log into your account from a location you've never logged in from before. Thus, even if someone guesses your game password, he can't log in unless he also guesses your email account password. You can make email authentication even more secure by using an email provider that supports two-factor authentication, such as Google or Yahoo, and taking advantage of that. We're currently preparing email authentication and intend to deploy it in a phased rollout, starting on Thursday, August 30.

Parties, guilds, etc. - Parties, guilds, and other social features are periodically failing. This causes issues such as party members not appearing on the map, and party members not staying in the same overflow servers as they travel between maps. This happens particularly during times of peak usage. We're working to fix related problems and mitigate this issue with each subsequent update.

Worlds - Many worlds are filling up. We're keeping the number of worlds constrained so that worlds stay well populated even after the initial surge of high concurrency. However, we will add worlds as necessary. As of Wednesday, August 30, all German language worlds are full and all French language worlds are at high usage, so we're adding two new German language worlds and one new French language world.

Overflow worlds - During this initial surge of high concurrency, and especially while many characters are low-level and thus playing in the same starting areas, it's common for players to be directed to overflow maps. If you want to play with a friend, but you’re not on the same overflow map, you can form a party together, then right-click on your friend's portrait in the party list and click "join". Note that this functionality is sometimes intermittently unavailable due to the "parties, guilds, etc." issues noted above.

Trading Post - We're working to bring the Trading Post back online. To help test, we've temporarily made it available to a random 15% of players, while we work to resolve remaining capacity constraints that will allow us to open it to everyone.

Edit: We have completed our live testing of the Trading Post for today and the Trading Post is now in maintenance for all players. Thank you everyone that participated; this test has helped us tremendously.

In-game mail - We detected a potential abuse of the in-game mail system and have temporarily disabled in-game mail to prevent any such abuse. We'll reenable it soon, hopefully in tonight's update.

Edit: The fact that in-game mail is disabled means that it's currently impossible for account hackers to loot stolen accounts, so we're going to leave it disabled for just a little while longer, while we work to ramp up email authentication.

Botting - We'll start substantial banning of bots on Wednesday, August 29. Since we're currently seeing widespread casual, unsophisticated botting, we will start with 72-hour bans for first offenses. In the coming days, as we address the casual botting problem, we plan to switch to our normal policy of permanently banning anyone who runs a bot.

Forums - Our most important priority at the moment is to ensure that the game runs stably and flawlessly. So as to not create additional demand on our infrastructure and on our programming team, we made the decision not to open the forums until the initial mass influx of players has calmed down a bit.

Next software updates - The next update of the game server and back-end server software will take place tonight at midnight Seattle time. The game may be unavailable for approximately 20-60 minutes while we perform the update. We expect this update to have fixes for email authentication and in-game mail. Our continued work on the Trading Post is not tied to game updates, so we will continue to test Trading Post updates throughout the day.

I love the "shady" NPC's.

You should always talk to them, or at least follow to see where they are going. I met one down in the swamps in Kessex Hills that was pretty neat.

That crafting guide is pretty good, in the space of 2 hours I've gone from 0 -> 38 for Huntsman and 0 -> 89 for Jeweller, and gained 3 levels (16 -> 19)
Very nice!

At the core fundamentals yeah I get to see how the questing is similar to most MMO's BUT the big but is that how it is implemented for example dynamic quests, seamless grouping rather than your run of the mill 'go to person, get quest, kill, receive reward'.

While they have them too its nice to have an alternative for a change to mix things up a bit and make it more interesting

I have a fairly consistent 7k karma at level 39, that is with upgrading from heart vendors whenever I see something that is a decent improvement.

Of course seeing the new price of the racial weapons I am now a bit irked :)
