There is all manner of hidden things in every single zone in this game. Hidden dungeons unmarked on the map that end in treasure chests, jumping puzzles that end in all kinds of things (generally unmarked unless they end in skill points), events that don't chain from common areas, achievements for finding particularly hidden areas, monsters granting more experience the longer they have been in the world without being killed... there is no shortage of reasons to be out and exploring the game world. I don't think I've played any MMO prior that encouraged it as much as GW2.

Edit - that's ignoring the obvious completion reward for exploring all the marked areas in each zone.

OK, I didn't know about any of this. I haven't found any secret chests of dungeons so far, but then again I haven't really been looking for them either because the game hasn't given me any reason to believe that this kind of stuff exists in the game world. Every time I've gone out of my way to look around the only thing I've found has been more mobs. Would be nice if they at least hinted at these secrets or something...

What exactly are these jumping puzzles people keep talking about? How do I recognize one?

They wouldn't be very secret then, now would they?

I think they are substantially different from "the usual MMO quests".
Both in the way they are handled, the variety of objectives to complete the goal, the seamless group play and branching of events that actually change things in the world, make it quite a bit different.

To call it "usual MMO quests" is doing the game a massive disservice, and it's a really reductionary way to look at them.

The presentation is the only difference, but the quests and events are just typical MMO simplistic stuff. They do a better job of creating a living world with the way it's dynamically presented, but your still doing typical MMO stuff. The game just took the MMO formula and made it more streamlined into a more natural feeling instead of such strict setups of old where you ran from quest hub to quest hub.

I think it's pretty intentional that they don't go out of their way to mention these things. It makes their discovery feel pretty genuine for a player. They do enough encouragement of the idea of exploration by offering a big reward for getting all of the map stuff completed.

As far as recognizing stuff, the answer is more intuitive than you think. Just look around. I find all kinds of crazy shit just because I navigate by camera as much as I do the map. You'll be surprised just how often the question of "I wonder if something is over there" or "I wonder if I can get up there" is rewarded by their world design.

I think overall the game should have done more in the beginning to let players know more about it. Our doesn't need to hand then everything, but tell players about exploring, crafting, dynamic events, etc.

The exploration is my favorite feature in GW2. It's perfect for a completionist like me.
Probably my favourite part of the game, nice change of pace to just run around a zone collecting all the vistas/poi.
No thanks; I just think you're obviously being cynical and lazy. If you don't like the game then don't be in the threat.

I've never played an MMORPG in my entire life, but looking at some of the screenshots make me really want to explore this world. I totally love offline singleplayer RPGs like The Witcher 2, Fallout 3/NV and Oblivion/Skyrim. These games all have a story and an ultimate goal though. I'm still curious if I would enjoy Guild Wars 2 if I also enjoy the before mentioned RPG's. It's still unclear to me what the actual ''goal'' is with an MMORPG like GW2. Does it even have a sense of completion or will the player just be questing into infinity? Maybe someone could explain how the gameplay relates to games like Skyrim or other offline singleplayer RPG's.

Something I've noticed the last few nights for the WvWvW meetups is a serious lack of Charr. I'm not saying GAF is prejudiced against my kind. I got horns, teeth, and listen to me purrrrrr.

Asuran? Please, my pooh is bigger!

Humans? Taste good with ranch dressing, but everything does.

Norn? Eh, they make good toothpicks...

For someone who's been burned out on mmos for the past years and couldn't get into SWtor because it felt too much like every other mmo, GW2 is proving to be quite refreshing.
Everything from the fluid combat, style/graphics to how rewarding exploring is and the design of quests/hearts makes playing GW2 feel just as good as that first time I stepped into Azeroth.

It's still too early to say for sure how long it will last me, but with the all the content all ready in the game I think I won't be looking for another mmo in a long time.

Edit: It's probably the only MMO where I've felt free to do whatever I want, when I want and where when I get a sudden urge to randomly explore an area actually find something worth exploring. Before you know it a 2 minute trip has become an 2 hour adventure.

Asuran? ... Humans? ... Norn? ...

And Sylvari aren't even worthy of being mentioned?

Jesus, so many people are going to get banned for exploiting the cultural weapons bug. Right now everyone is abusing it combining them with the Mystic Forge, creating higher tier weapons, including exotics.

Anet better fix this soon before it gets completely out of whack and gets half the players banned.

I agree, it does have the basic core of an MMO, but it's presented so well I look past that. Just like many other games in genres that excel at what they do.

It's fine for him to be in the thread, but breaking down core mechanics to be so general will create a case to encompass any game.

"So do you just drive around still?"
-Yes, it's a driving game, but Forza and Need For Speed are very different
"So do you just shoot shit?"
-Yes, but GTA and CoD are very different games

It's not about whether the core mechanics are there really, it's how they are presented, and with GW2 I feel the change is enough to warrant the praise it's getting.

It's not for everybody and it doesn't need to be. If people are looking at an MMO to not be an MMO they probably shouldn't play them. There will ALWAYS, and I mean ALWAYS be "kill X, collect X, interact with this X times" quests in MMOs.

I walked by that merchant a little while ago and it was really crowded. I wonder if they'll ban people for even purchasing the items, or just for exploiting them in other ways. Seems that tons of people on the server have at least purchased some.

I feel like I'm missing out. Hit level 8 and took up huntsman and cooking as crafting professions lol :(

Couldn't play at all last night due to having to reformat computer. It's running much snappier today but I won't get a chance to play until tomorrow.

Are the Guild requests/invites working yet?

I doubt they would, they would have to ban a large chunk of the population. Sure they can research those who are actually abusing it

"Keep it real, please. There's a reason the Charr invaded Human lands (aka scrubville) and didn't fuck with the Shiverpeaks."

They didn't invade human lands, they took their old lands back. They didn't go to the shiverpeaks because they didn't have a reason. Just sayiiiin.

Fuck, this game is amazing.

Rolled a guardian initially but was using a staff since it took me forever to find a greatsword. Once I found a greatsword my enjoyment increased tenfold.

Only complaint is that I seem to end up a bit underleveled by just following the quests in the beginning zones, and have to go to another to catch up. But due to the brilliant level scaling this really isn't an issue.

Do some events, do some crafting, your level will sprout in no time. I can walk into a crafting station and gain over a level's worth of EXP in a couple of minutes sometimes, depending on how far behind my crafting level is. (._. )

They probably would have, though, if they hadn't sent warbands up that way before and gotten their shit smacked. That's pretty much why they are bros now (or as close to bros as Charr have anyway).

Is white knighting bannable?

What do you mean?

I'm loving Guardian with Greatsword, I just couldn't 'click' with my Warrior and the moveset that he had with Greatsword.

Regarding Pull for the Guardian move, it says that "immobilized characters will be brought to you" ... is this the same move that a Guard used on me to pull me off a keep? Is there a skill I get that can immobilze? I just started him last night so am unsure.

You go to area, kill x mobs or collect x items. Sometimes you escort a caravan, sometimes the area can be taken over, or you get chains. It's still the same MMO stuff, just presented differently.

I don't know much about this but aside from a few small changes and no monthly fee, is this pretty much just MMO at its core? Like is it still "Kill 10 X" and that sort of stuff or are there are interesting and creative quests too?

The heart stuff, sure. They're generic to a point, themed around what's going on in an area. Collect X fireworks, bring X amount of ale to people, defend the firework launchers, brawl people, stay alive for X times. These kinds of things are unavoidable padding, as it were, when designing tasks to do in an MMO. But the point to Guild Wars 2 is how they're handled: with far more approachability and ease, so you can get in, do the things, and get out - not hunt down questgivers, click through pages of text nobody reads, etc.

But the personal story quests are far more diverse and interesting, since they're tied to a narrative. But quests are only a quarter of the game, and if you only focus on them, you get little experience.

As for personal story quests, or should I say, things you end up doing (depending on race/affiliation/lineage choices): Putting out fires, saving someone from a necro-chicken, fighting in an arena, fighting bosses, making hard choices between branching paths, fighting off invaders...

If you only fixate on what's the same, of course things will look the same. It's like saying all FPS games are about shooting guys and finding keycards.

Cool, I'll do this, I hadn't really bothered with crafting yet (I've been gathering resources, though).

Phew time for bed. Finally made it to Level 60.

Wasnt directed towards you, just JonCha which left us :p

Gotcha, damn, that ban was fast. A mod must have F5 and ban bound to the same key for this thread.

Also, looks like the Guardian doesn't get any skill that bounds the enemy from range ... so my dream of bound and pull offing a keep wall is shattered =(

Triple edit: It looks like Chains of Light with the Scepter will do this. Would I be able to switch weapons and pull fast enough or is their a cooldown or something I'm missing? I would just make this a macro or something.

Have they changed the scepter root to something else? Was like a 900 range immobilize.

So, how exactly are people getting the monthly experience achievement? Most ive gotten without a death is 11k. I need tips!

Any regular merchant should sell them. With the gold coins icon by their name.

Ive never found that guy in the quensdale extreme starting area (know where that guy is in all the other starting areas). I see a bunch of merchants selling fruit or something in that stand, but not the most important merchant
