A few notes:
1. I was (and still am) getting over a wicked cold. Sorry for the clogged tone of voice.
2. The Stormbluff Isle "Intro to WvW" night is Thursdays at 8, not Wednesdays as I stated in the podcast.

This trend of reading something about awesome sounding updates and features that end up to be either boring, unobtainable for me, simply not usable as hoped or consist of 1 hour of gameplay is really off-putting.
Server visits: Was hyped as fuck, turns out to be non international, no use at all.
New daily/monthly achievements and laurels: Amazing, finally new stuff to do. Aaaand it's the same stuff every day with oh so few variations. Bored again after a week. The stuff you can get for Laurels? Nah, don't even care for that anymore.
Living Story: Wow, sounds amazing. What do I do? Oh, 2 huge fetch quests. Well.
Guild missions: Yay new content. Oh, but you need a huge ass WvW guild, forget to play with your silly handful of friends.
Well at least Wintersday was fun. Kind of. The Bell Choir thingy was neat, while it lasted.
This game really keeps kicking my balls the moment I get up to shake hands with it. No idea why I still didn't uninstall yet.
Colin: We’ll probably take a look at that. I would prefer we do it more, you know, story-driven I think it’s more compelling and I think that’s more where we are headed. I’m curious actually, that’s really something that we’re walking down that path now. Is that compelling to your guys? I mean, take everything that happened in January, and condense it down to say, a weeks worth of content and then the next week there’s more story that builds on that. Is that something that would interest you guys?
Absolutely. It’s really good.
Colin: Is there anyone here who doesn’t like this idea?
Well, guesting lets you more or less exist in all servers simultaneously. It lets you hunt for event chains or states if your server is at the "wrong" time. I've already found this useful multiple times... the achievements system and the first arc of living story are expanding in three days... and you don't need a big guild or a guild at all to participate in guild missions, just to start them. I'm not sure what you meant about needing a huge WvW guild either, GAF certainly isn't that, and we gots the upgrades. Plus you can belong to more than one guild!
Anyway what Retro expressed maybe a little less diplomatically that I would have is that all these updates have been free:-[ If they've been angering you that much there's certainly nothing wrong with taking a break.

Retro's just grumpy because he's still kinda sick.

That's the ARAH I know.Had my first proper session in about 3 months yesterday. Tried ARAH, got Lupi to 1% on our first go, lag ensues, Sophie DCs and we wipe.
Cunt of a game.
Except it doesn't. It lets you play on all Servers in your region, not on all Servers period. I know, technical problems, databases, blah blah. Still pissed about that, 'cause it's ruining the game for me now, since 99% of my guild left the game at this point and I'm not yet ready to change servers permanently to the US from Europe (and would have to pay quite a bit to do so).
Retro, I see you like the game, so do I, I'm just not at all happy about how the last updates turned out compared to what was the advertising before said updates. I'm not sure how I was offensive in any of my points, but well, that's my opinion and your points don't really address the problems I'm having with the game these days. Or at least I don't really see how they would.
Whatevs, more time to do productive stuff, and I just wait until Anet delivers content that is in some way useful or for me. Right now, it isn't, and if I wouldn't like the game at it's core, I wouldn't waste time complaining about it.

You don't get to complain about norn cultural armor when it kicks the shit out of the other cultural armors so handily >![]()
They make blizz look like a bunch of lazy layabouts...
Yeah I had a great time too. I wonder why no-one wants to run the dungeon? in fact the only dungeons that people seem to run in chat is AC + COF.;o I could be making a blanket assumption here though, based on flimsey evidence for that claim.

I don't talk about it much, and I tend to try to debate issues of the game at face value without including it in the discussion, but really I think my attitude about this game (and GW1 before it) comes down to the way I feel about paying a subscription for a game in the first place. I mean absolutely no disrespect to those who have paid subscriptions and am not commenting at all on the quality of games that have then, but I just can't imagine what it would feel like to have the same complaints one might have about GW2 but also be paying $10/month for the privelege. I mean, christ. I get pissed enough at Comcast for the handful of interruptions in my internet every month, and they're just providing a simple service where 100% of their users are looking for the same thing. Imagine if every one of their subscribers wanted a slightly different kind of internet connection...
I guess it's just easy for me to "take what I get," in this case. All my complaints really seem to pale in comparison to the value I've got from the investment.
AC and COF are the go-to explorable mode dungeons simply because they're quick and easy. SE is becoming a more common run because Explorable Path 1 was recently made into a "dungeon path of least resistance." It's faster than the AC runs, and probably about on par difficulty-wise with COF1, and doesn't have any of the coordination-requiring sections that run does.Yeah I had a great time too. Yep, it's not just a reference, Sorrow's Embrace is Sorrow's Furnace, reclaimed by the dredge after the dwarves got stoned, and that robot is the same one, repurposed by Kudu.I really liked SE story mode because the demon robot boss is a throw back to a GW1 area. Plucked those nostalgia strings.
I actually like CM a lot. Those are the most common, yeah. but CoE and TA groups are faily common too. CM is the one I NEVER see people do.
I don't think there is a single developer out there, no matter the genre, who doesn't make look Blizzard lazy at this point. Arena.net still needs to push out a dungeon finder already though. Lazy bastards!
Not that it matters. The sub model is dead for a while now. GW2 even arrived late to that party. *shrug*
The "comment" feature on GW2LFG makes it very easy to avoid the kind of groups you don't want and find the ones you do. If a system that does that were implemented in-game I'd have no objection at all. I would also not like matchmaking (I think that's what you were talking about) or an auto hot join. But merely choosing from the list or posting your own on GW2LFG with the right description is pretty flawless. I'm actually putting together a brief post on how to get the most out of it.My guess is that they'll implement an in-game version of GW2LFG.com; enter the content you want to do, a quick description, and people can pick you from the list. Automated grouping is just... ugh, no thanks.
Aw did you get hung up on shotgunface?
They've already said that even though improvements to the Looking for Group system are something they want to do, they have been very clear that they will not be adding a 'dungeon finder'. They've never given a specific reason, but in my experience it breaks up the community by allowing people to automate the process. You just hit "Go" and the other people might as well be NPCs.
It gets even worse if they allow the LFD tool to work across servers, because then people start to act like idiots because the chances they'll bump into the same people again is lower.

My last CM run with guildies was fucking terrible. Someone from GAF and his "friend" wanted to start CM and I (and two others) joined because why the hell not. It was the usual CM experience: Half of us didn't know the dungeon and the cheesable shortcuts (I didn't run it in months), bunch of silver trash, and dying a lot But it was doable (abeit slowly). However, the worst part was the "friend" disconnected about 2/3 of the way and the guy decided to fucking bail on us without warning because his "friend" left. And thanks to the vague party leader status, kicking him resulted in us getting booted from the dungeon. Goddamn was I pissed. Fuck that guy and fuck that dungeon.
I will tell you I rarely get pissed off doing dungeons. Not even that Arah marathon we did where we fought Lupicus for the first time and you had internet problems fazed me. The only other one that did though which involved GAF was SE path 1 (which wasn't the fault of the players, only the shitty mechanics).
You know what I want? A queensdale sized open area "dungeon" (ala FoW or UW) where you are plopped in the middle of the map and told "figure it out".

I know what he means, though. In those instances there weren't "paths" at all, and you could do stuff in any order. There was very little room for error if you wanted to "clear" them but not everything in them was required either.Arah is pretty close to that.
Maybe getting this game soon.
Both the regular and Digital Deluxe (not a lot in there that I would say is worth the extra money, but your mileage may vary) are 30% off until tomorrow. Might want to get it ASAP.

I know how to get to the top of the lighthouse on Stormbluff Isle and youuuu doooon't...
Maybe getting this game soon.
Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaybe :3what
Does this involve that Asuran lab underwater?
*blush* No you're prettyAnd for as good as GW2 is, the GAF community around the game is even better. I really could go on for pages here, but the culture and atmosphere in the guild is spot on. Everybody is so damn helpful that I just want to be helpful in return.
Do it now while it's on sale.
I bought GW2 basically on a whim when it was $30 around Christmas time. Had always wanted to try an MMO.
Well, here I am 2 months later with over 250 hours logged, and I'm still having some of the most fun I've ever had with a video game. That's something special.

Yea, I noticed that.

EDIT: bought it
1. Roll the class you think looks interesting and fun, not which you think will be most useful. If one doesn't click with you, try another. Whatever choice you make, you won't be penalized further down the road (i.e. you can get into a group no matter what class you pick now). Every class can contribute, even breaking MMO-tropes; Guardians (the Paladin-like class) have a couple ranged attacks, Rangers are good in melee, etc.
- That said, most people say the Guardian, Warrior and Ranger are good classes to start with, while Mesmers, Elementalists and Engineers have a bit of a learning curve. Seriously though, try what sounds cool to you, as all of the professions are pretty approachable and you can always ask for help here or in-game.2. Race has no statistical advantage; it will only give you a few race-specific utility and elite skills (none of which stand out over the others). Otherwise it is entirely cosmetic. Be aware that the "Tauren Effect" is in play here; the two large races, Norn and Charr, feel like they move slower than the others even though run speed is normalized. Likewise, Asura feel like they're flying. Some people (myself included) find it detracts from the game, YMMV.
- For what it's worth, Norn look insanely cool in full armor (especially plate) and Charr have an awesome four-legged run animation, so there's silver lining everywhere.3. Buy a copper Mining Pick, Harvesting Sickle and Logging axe as soon as you have the money; there's no gathering professions, everyone can gather everything so long as they have the tools. Resource nodes show up on your mini-map (Grey rock, green leaves, brown log pile) and are instanced for everyone; don't rush to mine a Copper node just because someone is running towards it, you will have your own copy waiting just for you.
4. Likewise, buy a basic Salvage Kit. This is similar to Disenchanting in WoW, but you actually get resources like cloth, leather and metal rather than dusts/essences. This is the primary method for getting cloth and leather, actually. You will get items from enemies that serve no purpose other than to be salvaged, and will be labelled as such.
5. You don't need to be at a waypoint to travel; you can open your map and travel to any waypoint you've previously visited at any time.
6. If you want bags, take up any of the armor crafting professions (Armorsmith, Leatherworker, Tailor) as all three can produce bags right away. You may also want to check the Trading Post (shortcut: o) because the prices there are pretty low.
7. You get weapon swapping at level 7 (unless you're an Elementalist or Engineer), and unlock utility slots at 5, 10 and 20. Elite skills unlock at level 30.
8. For a quick level or two, explore your race's starting city. When you open your map there will be a checklist of the waypoints (Diamonds), Points of Interest (Small squares), and Vistas (Two Red Triangles), all of which give you XP just for visiting them. It also nets you some money and goodies for fully completing the map.
9. Learn to dodge early, it will save you forever. Most enemies have a 'wind up' animation just before they deliver a large attack. The default dodge key is V.
- Red Circles on the ground are enemy AOE attacks; dodge out of those too.10. When your health reaches zero, you aren't automatically killed; instead you enter a 'downed' state where you can defeat an enemy (or heal yourself if none are around) to rally back at half health. Keep an eye open for a blue "V" symbol over other players, or on your mini-map; this indicates another played who has been downed, and you can revive them (default key: f) and get some experience.
11. Wander around and do stuff. One of the biggest complaints people new to the game have is that there isn't any direction it shoos you towards. There are traditional quests (marked with hearts on your map), but the real meat of GW2 are events which can happen anywhere at any time. Pay attention to your surroundings; people will often run up to you and ask for help, or you'll see signs that something is amiss (people are sick and the well water is green? Follow the pipes to investigate the water supply.)
12. Whisper any of the officers for an invite to GAF guild where your questions will be answered. Ferny, Ashodin Venteal, Hawkian The Blade, Gojira, Professor Retro, or Wallach. You can be part of GAF Guild regardless of which server you are on (We play on Stormbluff Isle, but it is often full), and you can join multiple guilds as well (so if you have friends already playing, you can switch between them as you like).
13. We use Mumble, and have a GAF server just for our guild; talking is optional but being able to listen helps, especially in dungeons. We also tend to hang out and get overly excited about new features:
Server Address: atl.eoreality.net
Port: 64742
Use your GAF Name as your username to avoid confusion.
14. You can also register at GAFGuild.com, we post all sorts of events and discuss things a little more indepth than we do here, just to keep this thread open for general discussion without getting bogged down in theorycrafting, event notices and such.
AWESOME TIPS (i.e. "Why don't other MMOs have that?!")
- There are no mailboxes anywhere, because you can send and receive mail anywhere via messenger pigeons.
- Likewise, you can buy and sell on the trading post from anywhere. However, any items you buy, or any money you make from selling, can only be picked up at a Trader NPC (marked as a golden scale icon on your map).
- You can click the small gear in the upper right corner of your inventory and select "Deposit all Collectables" to automatically send any crafting materials to your bank. These items appear on the "Collectables" tab at your bank, a special space that holds all of that stuff for you instead of forcing you to hoard it in your regular storage space.
- Your bank space is shared between all of your characters, and there is a space on the lower right to deposit money.
- There is no mob tagging in the traditional sense; as long as you do above a certain threshold of damage, you will get credit and looting rights regardless of who attacked first.
