Guild Wars 2 |OT2| Funding An MMO Entirely On Quaggan Backpacks

I fully expect to see race additions but I doubt we'll see class additions because of how much work it is to make sure it's balanced for this world. It's a lot more difficult that the more rock paper scissors of GW1. They always could surprise us though! I don't expect to see either type of addition until the first expansion comes out.

Edit: As I think about it, if they took their time making the expansion, they could release a new class or two and profession together for it. That'd be a pretty huge deal and get lots of people to leap for it. I can't decide if I want to ask what type of class would you guys want or if it would be too depressing to discuss because it will probably never happen haha

Since I'm guessing you guys haven't heard yet:

http://www.reddit.com/r/gw2esports/comments/1e07b8/9_hours_from_now_soactowerdivetv_will_host_a/

There's a gimmick tournament about to start. Eight teams, each featuring all five players using one of the eight professions. I have a feeling there will be a bit of a trainwreck coming from this format, but let's see how it goes.

The two twitch pages streaming the event are http://www.twitch.tv/soacgaming and http://www.twitch.tv/towerdivetv

Only towerdive seems to be up right now though...
This sounds kind of awesome. If they really are being coached before each matchup, and everyone prepares counters specifically for the opposing class, this could actually defy expectations.

Winning one of these matches would take a lot of not "playing like you're supposed to" to throw off the expectation, but you couldn't get super gimmicky either. Ele vs. Thief and Ranger vs. Engi are the ones I'm most interested in.

I mean sucks as in it just plain blows. Whether or not you have brokered your way through the molasses time and again doesn't stop the fact that it's still slow and plodding.

The Warrior vs. Necro match was better for me, but it also could be because those are the two classes I play the most and use decidedly non-standard builds for in PvP. The Warriors were using all sorts of builds, AoE, burst damage, hard CC, tank, etc. But the Necros seemed to be all about condition combos and maybe minion masters and ended up getting taken out. Warriors won 2-0.

Thieves vs. Eles ended up going into the Ele favor. Thieves have really good dueling capabilities, but the second team fights started the many Ele S/D and D/D builds made massive AoE combos and ripped them apart. Eles went 2-0 as well.

Ranger vs. Engi is happening right now http://www.twitch.tv/towerdivetv

Mesmers vs. Guardians should be coming soon on http://www.twitch.tv/soacgaming

Good groups can clear any dungeon in 20 to 30 minutes. I think people give up too quickly in dungeons because they're initially intimidating, and it builds this false notion that dungeons are slow and take a long time.

It appears to me I need to gather a killer logging crew.

(Just a little tree joke, leaf me alone)

And the "false notion" I have of dungeons being slow and taking a long time is the crazy habit of joining a group with Hawkian and somehow or another it takes like 2 hours to complete. I think I need to stop grouping with Hawkian when he's near dead tired at night. :p

The semi finals ended. Both went 2-1. The finals and consolation matches will be held on Saturday.

Warriors vs. Guardians. I thought both would get dropped four the tourney early, but they did a ton of practice. Guardians have a number of balanced builds while the Warriors brought out a ton of versatility.

My money is on the Warriors.

EDIT: I WAS WRONG.

They're doing the finals tonight. Right now. http://www.twitch.tv/towerdivetv

Guardians win, spearheaded by our own Arken Elric. GAF > all

My next armor set I want to work towards is TA, but good god that dungeon sucks my balls. It definitely needs an upgrade soon. Maybe I can find a group to stick it out.

TA is EASY and if it's a guild run with proper coordination TA is a complete joke, I have done 90% pugs when i was getting my armor but the few times i ran it with my guild, F/U the hardest path was destroyed in 15mins...

Swaggin out in a Lions Arch after watching guildie Arken help win the tourney tonight.

Warriors need more immobilises and crap >.<

They feel very limited as classes go. Its like they have options, but theyre not good enough, so all you can do is go big damage and hope that you can keep in range...

Banners should be buffed alot.

I dunno, the main problem, in wvwvw anway, is that 9/10 you are fighting in ranged, and its pretty easy to get kited if you try and melee.

Thieves have so many outs and escapes, so much more utility.

Ive pretty much just done wvwwv while leveling, but I like to experiment somtimes, and my thief could solo mobs easy, the skelks and crap, even at lvl 8, just by using one weapon set, not swapping, just using those skills. While my warrior while I was leveling would struggle. I couldnt solo those veteran flag guards till I was pretty much 80 if I wanted to melee, while if I went longbow it made it so much easier. and thats warriors really, you can just get kited and miss too many hits.

>.< Anyway.

And yeah guardians are pretty much impossible to kill as a warrior... if they are half decent.

The new spvp map:

I know it's already been posted, but here:

33Ujwm0.png

Welcome to Sky Hammer, an arena filled with tricks that favor the nimble and the savvy. Both sides will need to keep a close eye on the floating cannon. Whoever controls it will rain death on the enemy.

that_shaman found the description of the map

And apparently more information about this map was found out, also by that_shaman:

FX1SvBV.jpg

Future Content Spoilers tied to the Dragon Festival

Ah yes, to add to my thread with more information I dug around some more:
This map is most likely going to be called Fortune's Vale

Your party will follow either an insane Asura Genius and what sounds like a Human and a Norn.

You'll encounter a depressed armor smith who wants to be a cook.

Enemies include:
Bandits
Ogres waging war on each other
Karka
Dredge
The Crazed (people who've been poisoned by gas and will fight for "him")

Dynamics include:

Taking care of a smokescreen
Sandstorms

To quote the party leaders just before the mission starts:

"It's about time you've arrived... I've placed an ad for brutes and thugs two weeks ago.. I have science to complete here.. your punching skills better be more advanced than your punctuality"

"Who are you? Did my superiors send you? ... of course they did .... look I need this scouting mission to be perfect! If this fails I never get a combat commission!"

"Hahaha look at this! You can't pass up the chance for adventure either! Come let's explore this Fortune's Vale!"

My only worry about the new sPvP map is that it might be too complicated. It looks like there are just a few too many paths going here and there, and with every point looking raised there are probably going to be moments where you're asking "how the hell do I get up on that bridge?"

Hopefully I'm wrong, and it's just that it's late and I'm bad at reading mini maps.

I apologize about my connection to the Fractal group from last night. As soon as I got in there it was ridiculous. I hope you all were able to get through.

Might still not be able to get my PC up and running for by tonight. Hopefully my internet is stable at least though.

My computer was wonkin' out too. Not sure what was up. That being said, this was no where near as bad as the time I decided to do a fractal on a night Anet was doing a lot of maintenance. At one point, it kicked me out of the party, kept me in the instance, wouldn't let me leave, and essentially kept my party from using party-chat.

There were definitely some wierd lag issues throughout the night last night.

I missed it. Is there a way to watch it still?

Tower Dive is uploading the matches that they hosted to the Youtube today. Here are some links to the matches currently up.

Warriors vs. Necros:

Engies vs. Rangers:

Engies vs. Necros:
http://youtu.be/oj-FQs4gYy0

The matches run on the other twitch cast should be in the videos here: www.twitch.tv/soacgaming

Should have all the Thief, Ele, and most of the Guardian matches there.

The championship match doesn't appear to be up yet.

Do you usually run multiple armor sets; one for magic find, one for dungeons, etc.? And what runes/orbs?

Thinking about just buying a set of orbs since they're cheaper than a set of superior runes.

Also is there any way to remove a rune/orb besides salvaging (which would destroy the armor)?

Thanks! Engi vs. Rangers was the only one of those I actually caught. Awesome how much closer War/Necro was than I expected. Rad that Engis got a solid victory out over Necros there after losing to the Rangers; obviously we're not working with a rock paper scissors setup here but it's definitely interesting to imagine the matchups that didn't happen.

More than anything it sort of sucked that there was such a huge disparity in skill level from team to team. So far as I understand 2 of the Wars were basically PvP novices, and the Mesmers just seemed underprepared, trying apparently to play their matches basically straight rather than attempting any of the crazy trolling/deception/surprises having a full team of Mesmers would allow. I think they had players at the top of the meta for each class as players, but the ones actually participating in each tournament were all over the place.

So, could any single-class team of 5 beat 5 guardians? :)

I have three main armor sets to switch between for my builds on each of my main. I also have a lesser Magic Find set which I use rather rarely (farming, OCCASIONALLY in big event zergs that involve a lot of trash).

When it comes to Runes, the set I've selected for each is meant to both compliment and somewhat define each build. It adds something to the combat in many cases and makes the buildcrafting more fun for me. As such, I used wacky rune sets sometimes, although my Eagle set could (as you've noted) certainly be replaced at a massive savings with Ruby Orbs.

You can't remove an upgrade you've placed but you can replace them (sacrificing the one you had in).

I should really make one o' these for my Mesmer now that his three builds are complete.

Wow, I'm not very sophisticated at all. My first set does damage and the second set does damage.

My mesmer on the other hand has a berserker, soldier, and a mixed condition focused set with no specific builds in mind.

More than I. My basis on item collection is ooo bigger numbers.

That would explain most of it for me as well. I believe that I went with a soldier set to offset agony at higher fractal levels. They say it's percentage based damage but having more HP felt like it'd at least let me live with a small bit of HP compared to wiping me out really quickly altogether.

I am in the 'oooo bigger numbers' camp on my mesmer as well. I pondered a condition set and then decided against it since I like to focus on big shatter booms anyway. And slicing faces.

It's certainly not required in this game to have a complex or even preplanned build to succeed. In accordance with one of ArenaNet's foundational design principles, skill wills out over everything else. You can feel it more than anything else when someone in your group is just unfamiliar with their class or bad at vidja games, and the most perfect build ever created won't help them. Of course on the flip side, a skilled player can contribute substantially to a party's success even with full magic find gear.

Personally, it was a lot of fun for me to look at rune sets and work backwards from there in kind of theming my builds around it. Using 6 Ruby Orbs or Divinity Runes just ain't my steelo. Diving into the rune effects also kind of gives you an opportunity to compensate for lacking areas or use class limitations and quirks as strengths.

For example, my Mad King set only shines because of the ludicrously low reset on Basilisk Venom. On the other hand my Mesmer sets are all each themed around turning his heal skill (which is shitty but easily spammable) into a situational advantage.

I have some interesting ideas for my Ele builds but at least one of them will be more straightforward, and one of them will be really ridiculous and out there (probably something with a summon, used along with both elementals), and for my support build I'm really really fascinated with the idea of being a revive specialist with Glyph of Renewal, Arcane Resurrection and Mercy runes.

I start thinking about what I could do with my Engi too and I get so overwhelmed. The possibilities are outrageous.

This right here is what I am looking forward to at level 80. I want to try and bring my necro to a place where people are like "WTF I thought necros were bad !?!?!" It's also the reason why I left WoW years ago, plugging rotations as a warlock was boring and there was always a BIS item that you were judged on not having. Now I am looking at my skills even at level 50 and actually thinking about how each reacts with the other and how I can exploit cooldowns, this is without optimal or even useful equipment and without being maxed out at lvl 80.

I think I smell burnt toast.

Guild Wars 2 is chill (lax? forgiving?) in that regard and GAF even more so. While I wouldn't suggest going into late dungeon explorables in lvl 50 blues, rarely is anyone is going to ask what class you can bring or what spec you are / you should be running. I partner with a war for instance and I don't care if he is dps greatsword spec or banner or shout or whatever. Much less do I really care what gear he is running. It may seem a bit like a casual game in that way but I think I prefer it a lot. It's always cool when I partner with a ranger who runs a build significantly different from myself, like a spirit support type or one 100% into beast mastering or condition bleeds on shortbow. Kind of cool the amount versatility you can have with a single class and how people are mostly responsible for themselves. Not really possible for one person having an off day to bring down the whole team I don't think. Except on the rare dps check occasions, of which there are very very few. It seems to be very possible in many other games, even guild wars 1 with a sub-par healer could hinder a whole group.

I mean, I have little idea how that compares to other mmos since I've never played them so maybe my post doesn't make any sense but whatever.

But it's nice to just be able to grab interested people and go wherever.

Even in mid-high fractals, one of the few places where you may have to be more strict, gaf is usually willing and able to take mostly any group of 5. At least in my experience. Well, they have to be if they are willing to take a useless Ranger :(

I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

Min-Max all day erryday. lvl 80 40+AR Guard/Warr pls, no range/thief for fractal. must have experience.

I laugh and shake my head whenever I see people requesting you ping your gear. CoF is so freaking easy and yet it's right up there with high fractals for having the most people demanding experienced players with a specific build and even class at times. As a zerker Mes, I meet those requirements in CoF requests but I just don't want to play with people like that. I'd rather help newbies with a good personality out than finish in 6 minutes with perfection obsessed ass holes. Sad thing is it seems like it's become more and more common on the GW2LFG site. At least it's just for those two instances right now mostly, CoF and high fractals.

Although I haven't really gotten into PvP myself, I would really like to see this game blow up as an eSport. I know Anet originally had some intention of that, and I wouldn't mind seeing them focus their attention on it for the time being.

Very entertaining stuff.

Other than that, been playing a lot. Good to be back.

The only real requirement for higher level fractals (aside from AR when necessary) is knowing the mechanics of each fractal. If I'm in a level 26+ fractal, I generally expect the people I'm playing with to know each part, as they should have done everything by that point. I'm not going to be a jerk about it, though. If someone tells me "I really don't know how this one works", I'll coach you through it.

Honestly, I've taken non level 80 players through fractals plenty of times. Gear is nowhere near as important as paying attention and knowing what you need to do. I've had people decked out in the perfect armor totally screw up a fractal just because they weren't clear on what to do and acted without thinking. But this is why I LOVE fractals. Stats are merely the entrance fee. What gets you through tough fractals is skill, preparation, and teamwork.

This is why a Fractal Boot Camp is definitely in order, to help those who are intimidated. I'll probably set one up at some point. Because nothing is more fun than going through a great fractal with everyone on the same page, even if you screw up a lot. I've been through disastrous fractals that were fun anyway because we all knew what to do, we just kept screwing up.

Living World: Pivot Point

The Living World of Guild Wars 2 continues to grow and expand with each new month, and I’ll be your tour guide for May 2013.

Scott McG here, Narrative Designer and co-conspirator with fellow GW2 Narrative Designer Angel McCoy. Angel and I laid down the foundations for this year’s grand plan in terms of characters and plot arcs, but so far Angel and her team of artists, designers, writers, and audio engineers have been handling all the work.

Everybody needs backup now and again, especially with the amount of content we have planned, so Team Spring Break is stepping up to handle our share of the fun (for the record, Team Spring Break includes me as the Narrative Designer, designers Rob Hrouda, Theo Nguyen, Anthony Ordon, and Leah Rivera; artists Aaron Panagos and Tomas Gomez; writer Peter Fries; QA specialist Jacob Miller; sound engineer Cody Crichton; and producer Mark Davis).

Keep It Fresh, Keep It Moving

May represents a transition—the Flame & Frost arc is now complete, and our plan calls for content to build on what came before while also kicking things off in a new direction. With that in mind, Team Spring Break first focused on the essentials: characters, story, and gameplay.

We needed to get players from the Shiverpeaks and Diessa Plateau down to Lion’s Arch and its environs so they could be a part of the story’s next phase. Savvy lorehounds will no doubt remember that the Consortium offered its help to those displaced by the Flame Legion/dredge alliance, but the Consortium isn’t exactly a charity organization—they want something in return for their assistance. Following the refugees’ progress and challenges on the Consortium’s Southsun Cove settlements proved to be the stepping stone we needed to bridge Flame & Frost with what comes next.

Southsun Cove: Where the Seafood Eats You

As we saw back in November during The Lost Shores, Southsun Cove isn’t quite the vacation paradise the Consortium wants it to be. They’re trying, but it’s just not there yet. In the meantime, the settlers who signed up for the Consortium’s help are being harassed by the island’s vicious wildlife and pressured by their purported benefactors to join the Consortium’s happy work force as full-time employees. Putting desperate charr and norn in that situation guarantees two things: 1) they won’t be thrilled about it, and 2) there’s going to be violence.

The increasingly dangerous situation quickly draws the attention of the Lionguard. As far as Captain Magnus the Bloody-Handed is concerned, nothing should interfere with the commerce to and from his city’s ports, so he’s given Inspector Ellen Kiel new marching orders. Her main priorities are to quell the unrest, settle the beef between the settlers and the Consortium, and rein in the island’s karka, reef drakes, and reef riders before the disturbances spread to Lion’s Arch proper.

Calling for Backup

Kiel can’t do it alone, so she’ll be need assistance from players as well as another familiar face: Researcher Levvi, the expert on Southsun Cove’s decidedly dangerous flora and fauna. If you’re lucky you’ll meet a few old friends (and a few new ones) that will become more important as 2013 progresses. In fact, if you hit the beach when the karka aren’t eating 100% of the faces there, you might get to hobnob with some of the nobility from Divinity’s Reach.

How does helping Kiel tie in to the next multi-month story arc? That’s a secret that won’t be entirely revealed until June, but rest assured that it does all tie together. What you do with and for Kiel will matter in the coming months, and along the way Team Spring Break is determined to keep things lively. It’s full speed ahead on Southsun Cove, baby, and you’re invited.

So pack up your suntan lotion (and maybe an industrial strength first-aid kit), and I’ll meet you on the sand.

What gear is that? Can you get that in the game currently? Kinda looks GW1-ish.

Here's the chest and leggings; http://argos-soft.net/GW2ArmorGallery/index.php?sex=1&weight=3&race=2&armorSet=defenei&color=3. They're pretty commonly available. I don't recognize the shoulders or gloves, give me a sec and I'll find out (will edit this post).

Edit 1: Here's the gloves; http://argos-soft.net/GW2ArmorGallery/index.php?weight=3&race=2&color=3&sex=1&armorSet=plinti

Edit 2: No idea where the shoulders come from, I can find a match for them anywhere. Maybe it's the angle or something, but I don't see anything similar. I wonder if she's still in game and I can go take a closer look... hmm...

They ask for gear ping for multiple, really fast runs.

For single daily CoF run, most don't care.

I've seen it on the site for single runs plenty.

In other news, I finally completed my monthly last night. Would have been quick if I went out of my way to do the JP's but chose not to so it was a race between salvage and events and actually only needed 3 more JP's and I was curious to see which one finished first without dedicating myself to any of them. The winner? Salvage as expected as I do a fractal each day plus a few world bosses and that just racks up a lot of blues and some rares to salvage. I dump all my greens into the mystic toilet which often times feels like I'm wasting them but when I get that rare back and it turns into ecto, worth it :)
