Get world completion first.

I would then play the game normally until you have about 200-250 ecto. You could do world bosses for rares to salvage, or get rare bags from doing silverwaste breaches. Depends what you like to do. While doing this you could drop 20g for the two required Miyani recipes, and make sure the required crafts are at 400, and get your 500 dungeon tokens if you need. Then go for mystic clovers. Using the 1 clover recipe means more trials, so lower variance which means you should approach getting clovers a third of the time. Using the 10 clover recipe means you could get lucky and need significantly fewer trials (or heck, it could spit out a nice chuck of charged lodestones or t6 blood or something else you need), but you could be similarly unlucky. So 1 at a time to play it safe, 10 at a time to live dangerously. The other components for the clover recipe are cheap and you can likely just acquire them as you go if you need more trials. Just go in with enough ecto at least. After this I would get the gift of master done. Dump whatever karma needed to get your obby stack, hopefully you've got enough badges from achievement chests for the battle gift, and now that you no longer need skill points for the clover recipe you can safely spend the 200 on the bloodstone. You'll also have a fixed amount of ecto left to acquire; it's nice to have a solid number.

I would work on the weapon gift next. Normally the weapon gift parts are relatively cheap, but Sunrise requires Charged Lodestones, which is gonna be another bit of a sink. The gift of metal and the extra ori stack are peanuts in comparison. If you've got any charged cores you can convert them up, but otherwise you might be able to get a couple from Dry Top mites, or otherwise just do whatever you like to do for money and put in an order for them.

Next is the long grind for finishing out your ecto stack and t6 stacks. However, I like to see it as going over a (very) large hill. At first it seems impossible, because you need everything but once you finish one t6 stack, you can sell excess of it for funding for the rest. Eventually you'll have half of the t6 stacks which means half of the t6 you get in game can literally just go straight for what you do need. Also note that you can sell things like ancient wood, ori, t5 mats every couple weeks for a nice income boost. It's easy to go overboard though (I'm speaking from experience). Try not to demolish your bank entirely looking for stuff to sell.

At this point I'd buy your runestones.

And then the precursor. I hate gambling. I've never done it for the precursor. I just play the game as normal, maybe do a couple extra dungeons a night. I like to sell Mawdrey parts for income. But it's best to try not to dwell on it because that can just get depressing. You can gamble if you want depending on how you feel about that.

--

Over the weekend I started kind of just doing a random selection of dungeon runs each night. 2-5, depending on time, if GAFractals, etc. Usually after 10 eastern I have been going. I rarely run with pugs. The closest is that I will ask a friend and he will bring a friend that I don't know, or something like that. If you ever see me asking in guild chat for people for dungeons, just know that I don't care about your experience level or what class you are or if you want to level an alt that's not 80 or whatever. I do generally like stacking, which I know is disgusting to some, but I won't insist. Just wanted to have the disclaimer that these aren't all "gafsmash" but we can gafsmash some of the times too if we want.

Guys, I could use some advice on how to proceed with my Sunrise adventure. I know some/most of you guys have some form of Legendary weapon so I figure you could give some tips on how to get their as painlessly as possible without outright buying it with real money :)
Run 4 dungeons at a time. Vary it up. Took me 8 months to get the gold for Dawn and mats.

Last night someone in the guild used the term 'bearbow' and then I saw it again on Reddit but I don't want to look up what it means because I'm afraid it's not a giant bow that shoots bears.

"Bearbow" is a ranger using longbow and brown bear. This is a derogatory term for what was once a build choice that self-identified noobs: longbow was terrible, but people used it anyway, and people chose bear thinking ranger condition removal was worse than it actually was. Bearbows were notorious for playing a selfish version of ranger, knocking mobs away and not bringing group buffs. Now longbow is good but taking brown bear still means you're a noob. :p

Bearbow is an endearing term for ranger.

Being more serious, there used to be a huge stigma against Rangers for srs dungeon groups, kinda like what you might sometimes see now for Necros, only maybe slightly worse. Lots of Rangers would use only bows and bear pets, which are low dps pets, meh utility, and using a bow up close meant low damage or far away meant no boons or not even healing spring on the melee folks. So a "bearbow" was someone barely contributing to a group at all. It was sort of used as a sign that a ranger "didn't know what they were doing". And bows only hit one target if not traited. Longbows have seen a significant boost since then, and rapid fire is not only quite bursty but it can, along with 2x opening strikes, stack 20 vuln on an enemy in a couple seconds. Even though GS is less damage than sword/x, following up with maul a ranger can cap vuln on a target on his own. So they are in a lot better place now, even if their damage is still in the bottom half of the classes, iirc.

Also, this is just a ranger 101 in case anyone, like, dungeons with one but has never played one. Healing spring removes a condition every couple seconds, so if you ever see a ranger drop one, you can use it to cleanse in addition to acting as a water field.

But also there is a giant bow that shoots bears?

lol

Thanks for all the Ranger infos. I really don't know what those guys do. I kinda know what I do, so the next step is figuring out what the other classes are good for (mostly carrying Zyra through dungeons it seems).

So has anyone done the maths on Loyalty Chest? It's pretty much laurels, right?

So I completed the leveling, traiting, and most of the gearing for my necromancer- my seventh 80. I created three classes at launch (warrior/ranger/ele), and then three more over time (mes/engi/thief)... I haven't been this excited over a class since launch. I think necro may have leap-frogged all but warrior to become my new secondary.

The catalyst to this new love was my discovery of glass cannon death shroud builds. I've long believed offensive burst classes require more skill than defense/passive builds (and I say this as a defensive player), but my previous forays into the land of big numbers just didn't feel right: warrior axe is too limited since the adrenaline nerf, ele staff isn't viable in pvp/wvw, thief requires surprise and hit and run tactics. And I didn't consider berserker at first for necro given survivability and mobility concerns were the reasons I didn't yet have a necro in the first place. But what I didn't know was how brilliantly death shroud interacts with offensive gear to produce a great table-turning mechanic. Just when your opponent thinks they have you, they overextend themselves as you go into death shroud and counter burst them. Either they're going down or you are- this is a playstyle I can get behind.

Make no mistake, I'm taking my licks in pvp right now (and on necro, those licks feel like they come from a St. Bernard). Traits are 62006... there's definitely flexibility in the non-grandmaster trait choices. My pvp utilities as of this morning are well of suffering/spectral armor/spectral wall. I was attempting to use the resurrection signet (as passive is life force generation), but the passive is a bit weak and active cast time is an insane 3 seconds (warrior banner is 2 sec). Spectral wall is pretty amazing for ressing your teammates and hiding in like a melee version of wall of reflection, but a lot of enemies can teleport past it. I was using strength runes but I may need to switch to hoelbrak or even melandru to deal with condi bombers.

As for weapons, I'm running staff for all content- too versatile, too quintessentially necro, and my necro raided my ele and stole her ascended staff for maximum life blast damage. For offhand I'm loving horn right now- it's tough giving up the condition transfer of dagger, but horn feels like the most complete weapon for pvp and has the best interaction with death shroud (#4 is a great daze, #5 is great for life force generation and supplements burst). I prefer dagger for mainhand over axe in pve/pvp: I find the skill portfolio more complete (LF gen/heal/immob > vuln/LF gen/retal+boon strip), but it really comes down to the value of having life force generation on your auto-attack.

But I know I'll need to use an axe for wvw due to the range, so I did some deeper testing on it. Axe #1 is seemingly unique among auto-attacks in that it is ranged but has no projectile- like ele staff 3 in fire, it simply hits the opponent if in range (two hits, which has nice minor benefits). It appears your target must be within a narrow cone in front of you for the skill to even activate, making kiting more problematic than axe proponents let on. Fun fact: axe #1 cannot put you in combat on its own. Regarding axe #2 I don't get the love in a pvp/wvw context; the life force generation does not seem to be worth spending all your time channeling this skill. However the animation of spinning the axe is amazing, rivaling that of mesmer greatsword. And for axe #3 I see the value in a wvw zerg fight, but elsewhere meh.

I'm tuning my gear very tightly to an exact 50% critical chance while still squeezing in some toughness. No external fury, banners, or spotter; just a maintenance oil. Been a while since I theorycrafted to hit specific stat targets; to do so will likely require an ascended assassin's accessory. Little did I know there are only two ways to acquire them, but it turns out I have 32/37 Arah skins (yay, old school pvp system). So I'll be down for Arah runs in the next few days when I'm not working on the Arah reward track.

TLDR: necro is death; necro is life.

No maths whatsoever but I'm going for the laurels. Taking them means I get a few more laurels in a month than I would have under the old system and once the Wintersday dailies vanish login rewards may be the only source. They're much more useful for a newer player but they stay handy, the other rewards come along naturally from other sources anyway.
Though if that chest of ascended mats let me choose Damask I'd probably get that a few times.

That's a great post about necros. The other best thing about axe 1 is that if you're an asura dude you get the awesomest auto attack animation in the history of auto attacks. My man spinnin' all day. It's the stuff.

Sadly it is random which ascended mat you get and how many. Otherwise yeah everyone would just choose bolt and either use it or sell it. Should be interesting to see if prices on this stuff change much after everyone starts getting their loyalty chests.

I stopped playing around summer of last year because I got addicted to dailies and had to step back a bit.

I am playing FFXIV now and I'm kind of getting bored of it for the same reasons. Since GW2 is F2P I figure why not go back and check things out.

I logged in this week and was pretty surprised to see some of the changes. I think I struggled with the end of the base Living Story. Is that something you should group up with people for or is that solo-able?

If you're referring to the personal story, it is something you need to do in a group, but it's not very hard at all. You can use the in-game Looking For Group tool to be able to do it with others and just go.

Awesome thanks. Is that a universal queue where it adds other people in the queue automatically or is it like a party finder where you have to recruit people to join you?

If you're talking about the final step, "Victory or Death", that's a five-player dungeon (Arah in Story Mode). If you ask in GAF guild chat, I'm sure you can find people to run it with you - if you're still in the guild that is, best to check.

If not, the Looking For Party finder might list a few other groups going through. It's not automated - you have to make a listing, or pick one to join. It's found as a tab in the Social panel (Y)

It'll list groups and show who is in it, how many slots they have left, and a short description. You have to hit Join yourself, it won't match you with people or anything like that. Nothing automated at all.

Gotcha. FFXIV has something called a Duty Finder where you pick a dungeon and it fills based on role across all servers people who want to do that dungeon. I think they do something like this in WoW as well.

I never joined the GAF guild but I'll be sure to do that tonight. Thanks for the help everyone.

Yeah, I always wondered why GW2 doesn't roll a 'fill up the party automatically' system either, but they opted to keep it more user-instigated for some reason. It works just about as well though. I'd love a 'Roulette' system like the Duty Finder has in FFXIV for GW2, letting you play through random dungeons and paths for a bonus, to help people who aren't finding people to play with.

I think the reason GW2 can get away without having an automatied dungeon finder though, is because of the lack of required "roles" like Healer and Tank. You don't get the problem of waiting 20+ minutes for a tank to appear if you queue as a DPS. Thankfully. >..>

If we happen to be on at the same time tonight (again, 10-11ish EST) I'll be happy to escort you through some of the higher level areas and teleport you up the jumping puzzles. If you don't want to do this, no big deal, just thought I'd offer =) The offer stands for anyone else who needs help with the JPs tonight as well.

that would be appreciated if you are on again tonight as my wife would like to finish it since we put so much effort into it already. especially since we don't know if the final reward will be made available again any time soon and with the daily rewards giving so many tomes of experience it's quite possible I have a level 80 by the summer :p

Sounds good, I should be on around 10pm EST. I'll see if you are around then :) What's your wife's IGN?

EDIT: also, which ornaments do you not have yet? So I can figure out a route to take you

Legendaries - Wouldn't think about it much until you've completed a lot of the game. Going for a legendary as soon as you hit 80 is the quickest way to never playing the game again. Seen it happen more than a few times.

The most sensible way is to slowly stock up on T6 materials for the gift of Fortune. Next to the precursor, this is the most expensive part. While you're doing this, maybe a precursor will fall from the sky, or you'll get a lucky forge roll. The manner of getting the clovers will generate T6 stuff, but I wouldn't bother with the rest until you're ready to make it. They're all fairly easy in comparison.

I haven't made a legendary because I want new designs. It's not particularly interesting when everyone is carrying the same few Sunrises and Twilights. Takes the uniqueness out if it.

EDIT: I have two factor on, so I get an email if my account logs in from another IP.

Compromised accounts usually mean compromised email accounts, which is more common than you might think. There's a reason I have two-factor on my email accounts.

You can add a mobile authenticator to GW2: https://help.guildwars2.com/entries/27626157-Mobile-Authentication

But you need an Android or iOS phone:

When you guys get started at 10 or whatnot, and you're lacking people to run escort to the higher level zones, post a message here and I'll log in to try and help.

So, final day before season 2 final. What is everyone expecting to happen?

For me, I have no clue really. I feel like it will end on something pointless behind the rock where we left off. although Turai Ossa showing up maybe be a connection to some sort of ascension.

Also will there be any speculation with season 2 to the announcement on saturday the 24? more mystery that time will tell.

I'm not really the kind of person going on about speculating possible outcome, I'm just bored out of my mind with work and I'm mostly wondering HOW season 2 will end in comparison to season 1.

It's looking like I'm gonna be a little late tonight... Social activities are taking longer than usual >_>. Hoping only 10-15 min late. I was going to take them to Loreclaw Expanse in Ashford and Shaman's Rookery in Wayfarer if anyone wants to get them started. Then trekking down through Sparkfly to get a chest in the Straits of Devastation after.

All I'd like is for it to be as good if not better an ending than Season 1. I loved season 1's ending, the finisher on Scarlet, the reveal of Mordremoth awakening, and the epilogue in the Dead End Bar with "to be continued". I felt it ended in a great way, not the best in the world, but still fun, quality writing that didn't make me groan. Everyone's mileage varies, of course, but I had a great time with Season 1, and its ending was sufficient for me.

I don't see the point when the amount of people who own an Android/iOS device exceeds 100m and uses Google's authentication system.

I feel somewhat emotional. So much has happened over the last 10 years of Guild Wars.

I'ts almost hard to focus on.. the thing they are going to announce on the 26th.. what if it is something we wont like? I don't know if I should be worried. But I am!

Saw a stat recently that was something along the lines of less than 20% of people who own smartphones ever download and install an app.

But even so - I agree, and yet, GW2 has a security issue in that people *just aren't installing twofactor* for it.

Anyway: escorting two level 15s to Orr was a heck of a ride. Easier than I thought it would be.
