Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire is the second expansion for the Guild Wars 2. As the balance of magic comes undone, lead your allies in the hunt for the rogue god Balthazar, whose scorched-earth campaign threatens the very existence of Tyria.

Humanity has worshipped the six gods for centuries, even as their prayers went unanswered. Now the god of fire and war, Balthazar, has made an unexpected return, only to reveal himself as a ruthless manipulator with little regard for mortal life.

Tyria's heroes thwarted the first stage of his catastrophic plan to destroy the Elder Dragons—but now he's raised a zealous army to cut a path of terror and destruction across the south. You must halt their march before Balthazar sets the foundations of the world ablaze.

New Region: The Crystal Desert

Balthazar threatens the Crystal Desert and adjoining kingdom of Elona with his Forged legions. Explore vast new maps filled with magic-drenched desert plains, ancient temples and ruins, and beautiful oases. Uncover the secrets of Tyria's history, and discover the fate of the Elonian people after years of silence

Introducing Mounts

Mounts are far more than a speed boost—they're a whole new way to explore the world of Tyria. Unlock and train your new companions using the max-level Mastery character progression system, and explore freely by leaping across canyons, bounding up high cliffs, and skimming over quicksand.

Nine New Specializations

Continue to evolve and customize your level-80 character with a new elite specialization for each profession. With a new variety of playstyles, weapon choices, and traits to choose from, there are more options than ever to play your way.

Desert-Inspired Weapons and Armor Sets

Collect and upgrade armor sets and weapon skins that reflect the beauty, magic, and history of the desert.

New Guild Hall: Windswept Haven

Claim a beautiful new home for your guild and live like Elonian nobility.

Springer's long ears and wiggly noses are charming, but the springer's greatest strength is their ability to make jaw-dropping vertical leaps. Traveling merchants and couriers use them to cross sheer cliffs in the Crystal Highlands, shaving weeks off their journeys.

Raptors are hardy and swift, and surprisingly easy to train due to their intelligence. They can cross great distances in a single leap, making them the favored mount of many of the desert's denizens. Travelers are advised not to leave the city of Amnoon without obtaining a raptor companion.

Jackals are elusive, magical creatures formed of shifting sands and given shape by magical runes. They can dissipate into sand to teleport short distances and dash through sand portals. The djinn of the Desolation create and tame them; prove yourself a worthy trainer, and you may befriend one.

Skimmers are graceful creatures native to the Elon River. They live above water, breathing through large air sacs as they float above the surface. While they cannot truly fly, they can hover for short distances at a height of several norn, making them indispensable for crossing large areas of treacherous quicksand or sulfur.

F.A.Q:

Q: Is there a subscription fee?
A: No. Like the original Guild Wars, each expansion is a single up-front purchase with no additional subscription.

Q: Do I need to purchase the core Guild Wars 2 game or the first expansion Heart of Thorns to play Path of Fire?
A: No. You can buy Path of Fire and experience all the content in the core game and the Path of Fire expansion.

Q: Does the Path of Fire expansion include the previous Heart of Thorns expansion?
A: No. However, you can add Heart of Thorns to your purchase of Path of Fire for a discounted price of 20$.

Q: What content do I miss out on if I do not purchase Heart of Thorns?
A: Living World Season 3, Gliding and the other Heart of Thorns masteries, the initial set of Elite Specializations (Tempest, Daredevil, Druid, etc.), claiming Guild Halls, and Scribing.

Q: What about the Revenant class?
A: The Revenant class will be unlocked for accounts with only Path of Fire, however the first Revenant Elite Specialization, Herald, is still Heart of Thorns exclusive.

Q: Is there a physical version of Path of Fire?
A: Unfortunately not at this time, and probably never.

Q: What Living World content is included in the Path of Fire release?
A: As of now, only Living World Season 4, which will begin releasing a few months after Path of Fire, is included in the expansion. Living World Season 1 is not accessible due to the impermanent nature of the content, and Season 2 and Season 3 are available through the gem store in game, however Season 3 requires Heart of Thorns.

Q: Should I buy Living World content?
A: If you like the story, you will need to purchase this content to access all story steps. As of Season 3, each episode includes an entirely new map with exclusive items as well, adding to the value greatly.

Q: Is <my class> good?
A: Probably. Outside of high level fractals and raids, your class has no impact on your ability to do content. Guild Wars 2 has a good amount of depth and fairly punishing gameplay, however, so you may struggle even on a strong class until you improve at the game.

Q: This game has no endgame/no trinity/no difficulty! Why should I play?
A: Guild Wars 2 has changed drastically since it's initial release. Heart of Thorns introduced Raids and cranked up the difficulty of the open world, overall adding another layer of end game depth including a trinity of DPS-Support-Healing within 10 man content and even 5 man fractals. PvP content has also been expanded in terms of rewards and structure in recent updates including automated tournaments for Structured PvP and a progression system for WvW. At this point Guild Wars 2 is a content and feature rich MMO with a lot to offer. And no subscription fee means you're free to take it as casually or seriously as you like.

How's the difficulty to be expected in Path of Fire?

I remember getting to Heart of Thorns and just hitting a giant brick wall in how hard it suddenly got to play, and since I have no friends who play GW2 or active guild I enjoy playing with it just halted everything for me. I basically stopped playing shortly after and only just recently bruteforced my way through the story campaign, still got more than half of the map in HoT unexplored cause of it.

And is there anything to do for a solo player in GW2? I tried getting a legendary weapon unsuccessfully since it required such copious amounts of obnoxious grind that I felt that the game was just drained for me after lvl 80.

Nice work Massicot and NormalFish!

I'm scrambling to get through the Season 3 story before release. It's gonna be tight because the release is just sooooo close now!

I think I still have not actually realised that it is coming. It's just words. No real hype because it feels unreal. :O

There are TONS OF COLLECTIONS which are essentially mini legendary journeys. I just took about a month and got a sick backpack that represents the Vigil, my order I chose in the base game.

I sold all my mats because PoF will be introducing the mat containers which have like 20+ of each type of metal etc. It's wild.

I just started playing about a month ago. Is this worth getting if i'm only around level 40? I already have HOT.

I played Guild Wars 2 for about a month when it first launched but never went back to it since, not because I thought it was bad or anything, I just never had the time to play it back then.

Is now a good/bad time to start over from scratch? Has anything changed at the lower levels or would I have a warm fuzzy sense of familiarity?

Mounts are only gonna make the game better, and you won't be long before you're 80. So you can dip into PoF, get the raptor, and go back to other story content

Now is the perfect time! They changed leveling to be a much more pleasant experience.

Plus we have a still living GAF Guild you can play with us :3

The expansion is light-weight on content. The spreadsheet has blips of purple. Where are new dungeons or legendary items?

It feels like the entire desert content is going to be boxed into the new isolated region while the rest of the game (minus elite classes) will remain the same.

That stuff is for the living world season. The expansions are always about main line story and open world content, which they said will be some of the most dense they ever have made.

It's a little light, yea. No new PVP mode or Fractal revamp or WvW Borderlands or Guild Halls / Scribing like HoT had. But I also feel like they could easily throw in a handful of legendary weapons and potentially other small features (new QoL gear changes etc) without advertising it. Also could be thought of a trade off for having consistent updates leading up to PoF compared to the wasteland we had before HoT (look at that anemic 2014-2015 color) .

We'll have patch notes soon to see if anything else of significance is bundled in. We'll also get into the next Season in ~4 months which will continue updates to Raids/Fractals etc.

Great ot and i cant wait for tomorow. By far the most fun mmo offering many forms of gameplay. Be it story or exploring and then item collecting or achievement hunting.

Massicot did the vast majority of the OT, don't bother thanking me lol. I'm just glad I got my computer up and running in time to contribute.

Looking forward to seeing how the story goes. The timing on this release is awkward for me but I'm optimistic about the months to come.

Also, spellbreaker is best pve spec believe

There is a new Guild Hall though!

Nice OT <3.

And good reminder: Think of this as a bigger Living World update. It's come around about what I assume a new episode would come out and the next episode is in a few months as well.

Also the idle animation of the raptor is awesome...

Come on, look how cute it is <3

I just meant the whole mechanic of guild halls /decorations was added with HoT.

Anyone know when it goes live? I'm all set to play tomorrow, looking forward to holosmith!

Due to go live in around 22 hours and 15 minutes from this post (5pm BST, 12pm EDT, 9am PDT, etc)

Set this up quickly last night:

(keep in mind, could go live earlier but this is when it's due to go live)

edit: Better timer that I found on reddit:

an Dark theme exclusive OT ;P

i switched to see.

anyways. i haven't bought the game yet.

It's not so bad on Light theme outside of the bright ass image at the top. Dark theme FTW though.

edit: Also it's nice that we can use mounts on other characters after we do PoF once with one character similar to gliding (well I assume so since I had Raptor in the stress test on a second demo character :D )

They mention when the preloading will start?

Pretty sure it's already downloaded. Will be like HoT where you just log out and log back in and the x-pac will be out.

---

I pre-ordered this today! I hope I get my character slot soon. Though unsure of what to do with it. I already have every class maxed out. Might make a Condi Warrior.

I played back when the game was released and after hitting 80 quit for few.. few years. I started playing with a new character last month, around level 70 now. Is there any point in buying the expansion now considering how much content there is already available for me?

Getting your mount and the new Elite Specs, maybe. Not sure besides that.

I've put thousands of hours into GW2 and this expansion just looks underwhelming. I didn't realize they could deliver even less than HOT.

I dropped GW2 hard after launch when I realized I don't have MMO time much anymore, but Holosmith and Spellbreaker look like fun classes.

Bare in mind there mindset recently is underhype everything after the backlash from HOT.

I have faith this expansion will be fine especially with living season ramping up around feb ish too.
