We have an episode count on this one yet? Been curious if it'll be a full 4 cour series or just a 2 with potential for another season.

Okada makes this iffy, but the funny and sad thing is that it might turn out better written than both Age and G Reco were, not that I'll take much effort to be better than those two were.

Isn't Turn A UC as well?... or did we decide it wasn't?

Turn A was officially recognized as the end of all timelines, but Sunrise seemed to stop really acknowledging or talking about that. All the official material of the last like 5-8 years sort of just says it's its own separate thing. Recently, Tomino said G-Self was a descendent of Turn A, so I guess it's still UC in his mind.

So I guess in Turn A's world, all the Gundams happen and it's the end of the timelines, but in the official timeline that's a separate universe. It's weird.

Kimaris doesn't even look like a Gundam.

I wish it had a more gundam like head, but I really dig the design otherwise. Such a bruiser. It uses a freaking hammer too, if the model kit is anything to go by.

I bet Kimaris will pull of a Gundam Virtue and have a more traditional Gundam underneath it.

Yeah it's pretty unorthodox. Hoping it has some tricks up its sleeve or something.

Kimaris looks like this.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's so bulky I was actually thinking along that idea because the Unicorn doesn't look like a Gundam until NT-D mode is active so it could have something similar.

The weirdest thing about Kimaris is that supposedly all the MS use the same frame, yet the Kimaris has such a different silhouette. The legs are way wider set and I'm not sure armor alone would give you that torso shape. I'll be curious to see if it actually does use the Barbatos frame in show.

I'm tentatively excited.

Kimaris looks like this.

While on this topic, the Gusion kinda looks like a squid to me. It's probably just the color and head though.

Also watch that Kimaris/Virtue prediction be true, and have it be OP for an episode while the cast figures out what to do about it.

I think of V Gundam as the end of the UC

Turn A and G Reco are their own thing to me, even if Tomino wants to make it otherwise

From the trailer, it seems that the mecha's are handrawn right?

I saw a trailer from Code Geass Akito the other day and my god was the cg jarring.

I can't speak for random Youtube trailers or something along those lines, since compression artifacts and re-encoding will cause quality loss and multiple visual distortions, but I'd argue that the actual use of 3DCG in Akito has been far from jarring. In fact, it works very well most of the time and looks great on BD. If you're really opposed to 3D robots in general due to personal preferences then that's too bad, but for me this is actually the right way to use them. For that matter, the mecha animation in Majestic Prince, which was handled by the same specialized 3D studio (Orange), is also very impressive. Their work on Fafner Exodus was nice too. Probably the best team when it comes to using 3DCG mecha in this industry so far. Nothing like what happened with the likes of Gargantia, where I did find the 3D robots jarring due to slow movements and not enough shading (although Chamber had a cool personality, FWIW).

Needless, to say, this doesn't mean I'd want 3D animation to take over everything related to mecha or science fiction. It just works fine for certain projects such as Yamato 2199 among others (even Gundam The Origin's 3DCG wasn't terrible, since the first battle scene was good, but there's still room for improving it). One way or another, I will always continue to appreciate 2D mecha and it's great that IBO is going to use traditional animation. That said, I do hope the other aspects of the show are good too.

So I've never actually seen a Gundam series before and was wondering what entry I should start with? Or what is recommended to watch?

I will be watching this as well since it takes place in an alternate timeline but I feel like I'm missing out on a lot.

You probably won't miss much. Gundam is all over the place but you can start here. The starting place is the first series 0079 then Zeta then ZZ then Char's Counterattack. From there just do whatever. Wing, Seed, G, 00 are all unconnected.

If you want some awesome Super Robot fun, start with G Gundam. It's the best one in the franchise. Though keep in mind it's different from most Gundams and if you like that and expect to find more in Iron-Blooded Orphans...you're gonna be dissapointed.

If you want something more serious, go for the original Mobile Suit Gundam.

I liked Gundam 00 Season 1 but that series in the franchise isn't particularly good, especially its second season and movie.

If you want something a bit more modern, go for Gundam SEED, as its a re-imagining of the original Gundam.

You don't need to watch any of these if you just want to watch this one though as it's completely separate from the rest of the shows.

Chances this will be a trainwreck (the bad kind): 85%

Chances this will be a trainwreck (the good kind): 10%

Chances this will be legitimately good: 5%

Conclusion? Everybody go watch G Gundam if they haven't already!

The Gundam franchise has a bunch of good starting points. If you want to watch the Universal Century continuity stuff, then you pretty much need to start with the original Mobile Suit Gundam. I strongly suggest just watching the compilation movies over the TV series, since they serve as the Director's Cut version. Once you've done that, you have most of the background you need for 90% of UC Gundam.

However, you don't need to start with UC Gundam. A lot of people outside of Japan, myself included, were first introduced to the franchise by Gundam Wing. You can watch pretty much any of the alternate universe Gundam shows in whatever order you like, since they all have their own continuities. So feel free to start with G Gundam, Gundam OO, Gundam SEED, or even Gunpla Build Fighters.

Thanks for all the replies! Will definitely check out G Gundam and the other recommendations. Looking forward to diving into the franchise!
