US rumours and UK date claims revealed

Spring 2006 could well be the date eager Halo fans get to dual wield their way through the 3rd instalment of the Halo franchise – if rumours emanating from the US are to be believed.

CVG have reported on unconfirmed reports that are currently jumping across the interweb like rumour croaking net-frogs, which allude to Halo 3 being 44% complete. Not only that, but we can expect the first screens of Master Chief in full Earth assault mode as early as this month.

A Spring 06 release has been firmly slated in the past with Xbox supremo J Allard himself stating that the prospective launch of the PS3 (also touted for Spring 2006) would coincide with Halo 3’s due date. Since then, such claims have been debunked, but a quick look at Amazon.co.uk reveals their Halo 3 on-sale date as April 14, 2006.

Do they know something we don’t or are they trying to secure as many pre-orders as possible?

In related news, it would appear that both Halo: CE and Halo 2 will be the first backward compatible games for the Xbox 360. Whispers from Microsoft’s current US press tour have revealed this, and whilst not a major surprise, it’s assuring that those yet to experience the Xbox MVP will get a chance on a next-gen platform.

As for Halo 3, we will have to juggle our SMG’s in anticipation for the time being – for further updates be sure to check out our game homepage here.

Uh.... show me some screens damnit!

Fall 2006 I could believe.

A spring 2006 launch doesn't really make sense though, since its pretty unlikely the PS3 will be out in North America in spring 2006 anyway.

Releasing Halo 3 in spring 2006 wouldn't affect a PS3 launch in Japan where no one cares about Halo.

They should put a Halo 3 trailer on the 360 HD.

Actually, they should put on a trailer for the non-Halo Bungie game that they better be making damnit!

It could be out that quickly according to these rumors? I hope it would mean more than Halo 2: Part 2 if the rushed commentary on the second game was appropriate. But a next-generation Master Chief photo, just a Bungie teasew to fans, would give at least a little help to the launch; the machine with Halo 3 could have a good time at the market.

Edit: Oh wait, this is CVG.

Well, except that a spring launch for Halo 3 would give a huge boost to the system just when it should normally slow down and hell of a lot of momentum to the x360 that it would be able to ride on through the rest of the year. In fact it would give the system a very good shot at comfortably remaining the number one system in terms of US install base through 2007 if that happened with all the repercussions for 3rd party support that entails.

Wonder how they came up with 44%. Why 44% and not...say...45%, or maybe even 50%. It's not like its some discreet quantity they can measure.

Not complaining or anysort of thing like that, just saying...funny number.

regardless of when its released, I do not doubt in the slightest that we'll see some type of media soon. Look how long they teased us with Halo2, and how successful that was. They'll definately start teasing soon, more than likely before 360 launch.

LOL, how would you even get a 44.59623% estimate in a task as complex as game development. Why not 40 or 50 ?

who knows, even this quote

has me scratching my head.. this is the first i've heard of it. they make it sound like its all over the net.. in which case, it woulda made it to GAF before now

Seems to soon to me. I would rather they didnt rush it. I dont want another short game.
And to think they also delayed Halo 2 for almost a full year. I can't even imagine Bungie trying to push a game out in only 18 months. It would be like 37 minutes long and end just after the opening credits. TEH CLIFFHANGOR!1!

It's because its a made up stat.

Ding ding ding ding!

Hey Dr. Cogent, how long will it take you to do all this Oracle work for this shit I haven't even completely defined yet?

<Dr. Cogent pulls number out of his ass.>

They can't really know what "percentage" they are done. It's like a work of art. It's a work in progress till it's done or as far as done as the company is going to put into it.

Software development is very "abstract" in a sense.

I think Halo 3 was either started before Halo 2 was done, or some of the stuff left out of Halo 2 was pushed to Halo 3. Either way, I don't think Bungie started Halo 3 from scratch 1 year ago.

All those rumors about Halo 2 being divided into 2 games so that MS would have something named 'Halo' for 360's first year don't sound all that crazy now.

I think it's pretty much a fact that Halo 2 was "cut off". Everyone knows this that has played to the end (of which I haven't, but I've read a lot about it).

They simply didn't want to take any longer. Once again, software development at work. It's like any major engineering development effort. No one knows "exactly" how long its going to take because no one knows what problems might arise. Ooops, didn't think about that.

Hell, I read just recently that Oblivion had a nasty bug where the Minotaur that was protecting a unicorn or some shit like that would go ahead and kill it anyway.

Trying to trace that sort of shit down can take a while. And sometimes it's something so simple as one line of code, but it eludes you because it doesn't "appear" to be broken.

In the case of Halo 2 though, they probably realized they didn't have enough time, decided to concentrate on the "up to a certain point" in order to get it out the door in time for Xmas.

On related note, the public has been advised to avoid direct contact with rumor croaking net-frogs, as it has been reported that they are carrying a particularly virulent strain of lolitis that has proven resistant to anti-biotics, skepticism, cynicism, and most forms of sarcasm. However, those of a snarky disposition have proven somewhat immune. Rumor croaking net-frogs should be squashed with a large stick on sight by professionals or properly equipped amateurs.

Obviously. Why it was cut short is another story. Personally, I think Bungie not wrapping up Halo 2 and moving onto something different had a lot more to do with MS wanting Halo on 360 and a lot less to do with simply not being fully ready in time with Halo 2 like you state.

It's probably a combination of the two.

I doubt we will see anything on Halo 3 until after Christmas. Although I wish we would. And the earliest possible release...Holiday 2006.

Actually that was a 5 minute fix. Just needed to make sure the Minotaur's disposition towards the unicorn was high enough.

Way too early, and MS will overshoot their biggest Game of All Trades and have nothing left before the battle even really starts

I'm selling a bridge, want to buy it?

No way MS releases Halo outside of the holiday season. This game is way too important for MS. I think that they might get it out by holiday 2006, and that's when they really need something to keep the attention on the X360 and avoid getting trampled by the PS3.
