Halo 4 Announced (MS Conf, 2012, Start Of New Trilogy)

This could mean a brand new trilogy starting on 360. It's not as if Halo 1, 2, and 3 were all on the same console.

At any rate glad to hear there's still some life in this gen after all.

It could be the Forerunner homeworld.

The Reach engine is fine the way it is, they just need to sort out the frame rate and i'll be happy.
Pretty sure this will be using a new engine. They hired Corinne Yu, after all.

4 halo games and they announced 2 more. That would be 6 games from the franchise to hit the console this year. Just like the COD line (after mw3 that would make 7 this gen), people can consider that milking.

I like halo, and I am even starting to think this is ridiculous.
Well one's a remake with all new graphics and it's coming with 7 Reach Multiplayer maps. How is that milking? You might feel like there's a lot of Halo games on the system, but that's only because the 360 has been around for a long time. As for Halo 4, it doesn't even have a release date yet.

Warning! Halo 3 spoiler:

It's Reach... I think.
It's a shield world, most likely Onyx.

You'll probably meet up with Halsey and the other living Spartans there.

Nobody knows, although most guess it is a forerunner installation or planet, because of the design.
Looks half space station, half planet to me... probably a shield world.

One of the countless other objects in the universe.

Yeah i am pretty sure they didn't hire Yu just so she could enhance someone’s engine. No doubt she is using her talents on creating a brand new engine, also i agree with Digital Foundry argument that MS hired her to help shape the technology of the next Xbox as well

Why though, the Reach engine is impressive enough, seems a bit of a waste.

How long have they been working on Halo 4? It's coming out this year AND they've built a new engine? Would it not just be a modified version of Reach?

EDIT: Sorry next year.

I'm down with a Halo 4 teaser, and I get the milking comments. It wouldn't be so bad, but we know they are gonna sell the remake for probably top dollar.

I with the Halo 1 remake was $40, and then Halo 4 was just a teaser to let people know it exists. Then it didn't come out till the next console launch. I think the bigger issue for me isn't the milking with either CoD or Halo, but rather that I've seen enough on the current generation. Rather see them just keep pushing content for their current games, and focus on something for the next generation.

I mean we got the original attempt with Halo 3 and the updated ODST, and then we got their 2nd go round which you need cause a 2nd go round later in the life cycle of a console pushes much better results. We've gotten this already though with Reach. I'm fine with the Halo 1 remake using what I assume will be a modified Reach engine, but I'd like Halo 4 to go next gen. I especially think this with 343 being the internal MS Halo studio so they could get early low level access to the next generation hardware that 3rd parties might not get at least as soon. Plus would give 343 a chance to create their own engine.

Halo 4's been in development since 2009. It's coming Holiday 2012.

I think people are getting to upset over the term milking. It doesn't matter if they add new mechanics or of each sequel you consider better than the one before.

It is simply considered milking when a company revisits a popular franchise repeatedly in a short amount of time. Of course concessions could be made for titles brought about various consoles (there is nothing to say the bases overlap) but companies that put forth an entry of a franchise (same series and world) every year are milking it for what its worth.

You can take it as a negative but it simply a reality. And something that is probably going to be the norm as costs of creating video games rise.

That said..... I am looking forward to Halo 4 and the only thing that gives me pause is 343. I don't think I have ever played a game from that company.

I'm sure its just modified; no way they would start over again. Part of me would love to see them start anew, but yea, we wouldn't be seeing a quality halo game for 2 more years if that was the case.

Damn it, I knew that I should have finished reading the rest of the Halo books. I only read Fall of Reach. I'll get on it this summer.

I loved the speed at which the Chief decided to bust ass.

Not digging the new armor though, I think they should have just polished up the Halo 3 Mk VI armor.

Sorry i had a brain fart i meant next year.

I think the only time we're gonna see a completely new engine is the next xbox.

I look forward to this anyway, i hope they go back the old halo formula multiplayer wise.

They'd be kind of shooting themselves in the foot with recent adopters of Kinect to go next gen that soon though. If I had to guess Halo 4 will be the last one on 360 and possibly 5 but 6 will definitely be on next gen hardware. Halo 2 launched in 2004 after all and 360 was released almost a year to the day after that.

if milking means bringing me high quality games every 2-3 years then pls i give me more milk, in non-fat, low-fat and regular varieties, maybe some soy milk too.

I'm counting a waiting period of at least 2 years tho. I mean we have Halo Remastered coming this year, and then next year could be an off year for Halo. Then they could launch the new console in fall 2013 with Halo 4. That would give the game another 2 + years to be legit to without a time crunch.

...more like you'll get the same high-quality game with minor changes every year. Hope you don't like new experiences!

Exactly.

MS is milking Halo, no doubt. When you make a game in the series per year (which they'll priobably do, unless they want to finish the 2nd trilogy in 2020) it's called milking. But can you blame them? It's their biggest franchise.

Also, there's nothing wrong with milking as long as the games are good: point in case the Assassin's Creed franchise.

Agreed. I was more getting at the near-yearly releases with my comments personally. That's not to say the games aren't great but yearly sequels are happening far too often in the industry.

Why couldn't they just honestly wait for the next console to develop Halo 4?

"Halo 4" just seems ridiculous, I understand more halo but the title just doesn't click with me. I can't picture it in stores and everyone playing it. Probably due to the fact that I was 100% sure it was ending at Halo 3.

What? It's just outside of the galaxy, much like the Ark was. I don't remember it ever being said that it was in an entirely different galaxy.

You know, you have a point. Halo 4 should not be an FPS, it should be a train simulator.

Regarding the planet in the reveal teaser, it looks like the same one in the Halo 3 ending (you can even see a hint of the forerunner structure in the Halo 3 ending).

Trailer was hype as hell, a real damn shame that MS leaked it themselves.

Super curious as to what Frankie & crew will put off with this one.

the whole point of the shield worlds are to protect them from the halo array, why would they put sheild worlds outside of the halo array?

That applies to pretty much every other game and movie franchise out there, and how is Halo 4 ridiculous? If anything it's juuuuuust right. Halo four. Love saying/writing it. :)

Did I hear Cortana say "John" before Chief?

Should be interesting. I was hoping it'd be for the new system if there was one. Can't wait either way.

Onyx is in a slipspace bubble within our galaxy. The planet in the trailer could be a Shield World, but not Onyx.

Please don't be covenant, please don't be covenant, please don't be covenant.

I finally just finished Reach yesterday morning. I can't get excited about killing Elites and Brutes over and over again.

Then again, maybe I should stop playing Halo games on legendary. I'm sure only using the plasma pistol + BR/Pistol/Needle rifle for the entire game is taking away some of my enthusiasm. I miss the shotgun :(.
