Halo 5: Guardians Beta Thread | Hot Red on Blue Action

Fucking ranking system,I don't know what to think about it.
On one hand it is great because it is somehow forcing team play and people should want to win the match if they want rank higher. On the other hand I often keep getting matched with some people that suck or have really bad day in Halo and my ranking is decreasing because we are losing.
I don't even know why I care so much about it.
It sucks to be alone in this game ;(

This is the most accessible Halo in the series.

Doubt my skills will translate back to MCC once the beta is over, but I at least have a KD and KDA over 1 currently.

I'm about to jump online in a Halo game for the first time since Halo 2. Is it noob-friendly? I do not want to be raped all NYE.

You're gonna get rekt for a little while, no lie. Very little aim assist, lots of stuff going on. Don't despair if you land in Bronze or Iron after your qualifiers.

Sorry that I'm one of those bad people who will lower your rank.
While at the moment being a Beta I don't see it as a problem, but I hope for you and a lot of other peoples sake they don't only base it on win/loss.
Even if your team quits and you are left solo against 4, you still lose points which is pretty dumb in my opinion also.
Should be based more on how well you did rather than a win/loss. Obviously the win/loss should also affect it, but if you went like 27/4 or something and lost still you should probably not lose any points really.

Hopefully they fix it for the people who aren't crap :P

Josh Holmes did a post about the ranking system over in the Community thread about matching. Short version: it'll even out, eventually.

Long version:

The system hones in on a player's skill before their CSR rating is exposed. There is a hidden skill value that isn't revealed until the 10 games are complete. Which is to say, you may be playing with/against players of like skill even though they are still in their qualifying period.

The other thing to keep in mind is that MMing takes time to find like matches within the available population (people actively searching, not playing a match). After some time the match parameters expand and you may be placed in a game with people that are outside (above/below) your skill band.

This timing is a delicate balance because we have a limited population in beta and we have to balance MMing time with quality of match. If we take too long to match for skill, people start dropping out which extends the search time and eventually you get a timeout error. If we expand too quickly, you get more lopsided matches, which in a heavily skill-based game like H5 can lead to a frustrating/unsatisfying experience.

The good news is that even within the limited beta population we are seeing a majority of close games with both teams being competitive. This will only get better as our MMing algorithm improves and population increases at launch.

As I'm getting more used to everything, the better it gets. I never us ADS except occasionally with the AR close range or DMR long range, and still am able to hold my own. I never use sprint around choke points or weapon spawns, and the boost is great for dodging grenades. If they nerf the ARs range, SMGs damage, make ADS a zoom only function, and make the TTK slightly higher this will be a great Halo game. It no longer feels like its chasing CoD. Recon controls feel good.

I'm a fan of the headshot sounds, I love em. There should be an option in the full game to turn them on or off though, easy way to please both sides of the camp.

Because it's even more audio clutter in a game with a stupid sound for everything.

Headshot animations have always been more then enough feedback for more than 13 years.

Audio isn't overly cluttered at all. It's a nice little sound that hurts nothing and provides some great feeling feedback.

Also, lol @ "back in my day, we didn't need it!"

Um, yeah. No. That was horrible and not fun. I was getting yelled at the entire time. This is why I quit playing multiplayer games. :(

Just mute them and play at your own pace. It's a little like learning to drive; at first, you'll be slow and hesitant and makes mistakes and a lot of assholes are going to honk at you, but if you just ignore them and focus on improving you'll get the hang of it.

My number 1 tip would be to not sprint. It's a tough balance to master, and having your weapon up at all times is more important for a rookie player than trying to be first to a firefight.

Fuck talking to random jerks online. Even when playing solo I open up a party chat and stay in there alone. This way I don't have to take the time to mute them one by one too.

I know others have said it is the most accessible Halo game, but I've found it to have quite a high learning curve. Wasn't till my 7th or 8th game till I got my groove, much longer than most shooters. Learning to use all the abilities and systems in place correctly takes time since at first they overwhelm IMO.

What were you doing?
Trying to play Halo. Didn't work so well. I'll dive back in and see if I can get a kill this time. Thanks for the tips and encouraging words from the rest of you. Happy NY!

p.s. I want my old button layout. I tried to kill dudes up close with be multiple times and couldn't figure out zoom was not RT for half the match.

Try Recon or Halo 4 layouts.

Had 3 sniper kills in the last 45 seconds including a really nice double kil to win the game 50-49. Finally remembered to use the "record that" feature only to find out it didn't get all 3 kills :( Didn't realize it only got the previous 30 seconds. Thought it was longer than that.

i played a few matches, im pretty bad. i like the new movement stuff, climbing feels good. graphics are eh, (i realize they said its early days for that) 60 frames is nice.

i like it, but i'd rather play halo 2, titanfall, shadowrun, gears instead. not sure if im a day one for this.

Yeah, try sticking with a teammate and help each other out. Running off alone is the fastest way to die in this game.
