Halo 5: Guardians Multiplayer Beta Behind the Scenes (direct feed vidoc footage)

I played Halo pc competitively (as competitively as you could on the platform) for a few years, and Halo 2 casual comp for many more.

I love Halo. Map control and heavy weapon utilisation on an even playing field. Hip fire accuracy and grenade bombardments while mobile to keep shots coming as you moved through the map to keep sections locked down.

Halo 5 seems to understand these parts. And these are the most important parts to me.

ADS, sprint, clambering, ground pound, jet packs. As long as these things don't change the core of the game then I think I could find a new home with Halo 5. The video of the pro teams looked very much like classic halo map control to me, and the core shooting looked like it had the Halo feel despite the cosmetic ads and sprint.

Plus there's time for feedback. Hands on will tell me more. I'm actually going to buy an Xbone /based/ on this footage. MCC had me extremely tempted but this sealed it. It I can be part of the community that helps shape this into a great game then I want to be there.

It might not hit the mark dead on or it might surprise us all. I'm actually quite shocked I'm on board with what they've presented, and I'm definitely intrigued.

The scope of the DMR is ridiculously huge. Going in-scope removes the radar, which is apparent for all the weapons.

scope takes up alot

I think the lateral speed bursts as dodges will work well with halo style maps. Continues sprints and slides though? Not sure. In destiny it promotes a playstyle where in medium range maps or areas shotgun is king, cuz you close distance way too fast for anyone to respond. Of course in destiny everyone also fucking starts with a shotgun for some ludicrous reason.

I liked the general look of it. They looked more like the master chief fantasy in general. More advanced and more awesome. Gotta make sure they balance the boosts with some sort of penalty ... Like virtual on make it so if I can predict your boost I get an upper hand. That way it doesn't need to be limited, it just needs a good guessing game element giving me an advantage if I shoot you immediately post boost

Vertical climb ups seem quick and snappy and doesn't break verticality like the old jetpack did cuz you don't get that high.

Getting shot out of zoom... Hell yes. Man been playing too much destiny I forgot the Bungie shit I used to like!

It definitely looks like the most polished halo to date. But I am completely baffled at the sights and aim in inclusion.

Also what the hell is with releasing all these 1080p highly well sampled and AA'd screens? Does the PR department have no shame?

Having read through all the responses, you definitely seem to be in the minority. I realize we must all wish it was still 2004 and Spartans still speed-walked leisurely around the map, but maybe--maybe--some of the self-professed diehards should give the game a chance and actually play it before kicking over the magazine rack in disgust.

Really. I think at this point, it's either suck it up and give 343 a chance or...I dunno...don't let the door hit your ass on the way out?

Ultimately that's what people said about Halo 4, and it died off horribly.

If the same happens on Halo 5 it won't be the hardcore player base having the exit shown to them.

as someone who has played a load of halo 2/3 (over 25K games) online this looks like a great start.

I hope they add playlists with the vanilla feel sans the spartan upgrades..

but overall upon watching it's not the cod horror story that I first imagined....

The fact that people are moaning about the commentary rather than the core gameplay mechanics is a great thing.

as long as BR and DMR beats AR and SMG at range, I think we're good.

Looking forward to the Beta!

Yup

I've played years of H2/H3 and this beta looked great imo. Didn't care for Reach or H4.

Well they are a PR department, I think their lack of shame was a requirement for the job.

ADS looks like trash. Make that shit optional.

It is. People were choosing to use it all the time. Long distance and need some accuracy without the speed drop usually associated with ADS? Use ADS. Else you just shoot like your normally do in Halo.

I mean when i scope in I don't want a huge gun model in my face, let me have a classic zoom option and keep the ADS bullshit for those that want it.

Excluding the fact that all smart scope helmet zoom has been reduced to an ADS and all that that carries with it.

Aah fair enough. I am assuming thats just a BR or DMR thing. They might have custom scopes for all we know but the classic option would be nice for people.

Since it hasn't been mentioned in a single preview or seen in any of the released footage, I'm assuming that assassinations are out (at least at this current stage)?

Okay, okay fair enough I've been extremely skeptical about 343i and their way of handling Halo, I still am skeptical. And been rather rude in the past towards 343i. But I must that say those Spartan abilities look a lot better than I expected, still not feeling Sprint.

Hyped for the Beta bring it 343i!

No heard anything but tackles are in and the pound stuff. I think assassinations take people out of the action too long.

It looks like it's already trying to be Advanced Warfare.

Boosters were in at the E3 trailer, AW's jumpsuit theme likely had no impact on this, or at least didn't make the boosters appear in it.

The more I look at it, the more it reminds me of Titanfall Titan V Titan gameplay. Juggling wealth of offensive options while maneuvering an easy to pick up, but hard to master avatar. This excites me.

You should watch the videos closer, listen to and read the explanations of how the mechanics function, and realise development timelines and which series had which features first.

This is not trying to be AW.

Well it definitely is buying into the "spirit of the times" concerning FPS gameplay. I mean, it looks markedly similar in rythym and movement to Titanfall and AW.

Not Titanfall infantry gameplay, but Titan yes. Infantry in Titanfall has a helluva lot more options than Halo 5 appears to have.

Some feel of Titanfall in there but it is clearly still Halo. I like the increased mobility.

It's not the Halo I remember but that's okay, we have Master Chief Collection for those who can't let go of the past. I'm always open to the idea of sequels being different and taking some chances.

As far as the FPS genre goes, it's clear that Old Infinity Ward/Respawn Entertainment are the ones coming up with all the new ideas. Both Advanced Warfare and Halo 5's new mobility options have reminded me of Titanfall.

Last I checked the thruster pack was in Halo 4, which by the way came out before Titanfall

Didnt you hear? Titanfall invented jet packs.

Call of Duty invented skull masks.

Gears of War invented the first ever cover system.

Halo invented FPS.

(;

And I guess that is my problem with it. Instead of making something unique it is kind of a tropes mash up of other games. ADS, ground pound, jet boost, doublejump, vault animation, what have you.

Actually, the more I think about it, it kinda is extremely similar to Crysis 2 and 3 multiplayer.

on first look this looks like trying to pull off halo cod and q3/ut at the same time. very difficult combination to do well . I'm skeptical but hey if they pull it off amazing. props to them if they pull it off ... on a console no less.

You know what. I feel bad about overreacting about the ADS (Not that I really did, was just concerned), from the Vidoc looks like they implemented it really well, seems it is simply just a redesigned zoom and from the looks of it, for the better.

Sprint I didnt have much of a problem with before or just didnt see the problem with it, but again, shields not charging while sprinting seems a good drawback to allow it.

Game does indeed look better in this vidoc too.

I think they nailed it. I love that you can climb ledges now...it is something so seemingly simple to implement but makes the levels much more interactive. It makes so much sense to have especially with the sprint feature.

Watching the video of the two pro teams that's not true at all.

I mean, the movement is slightly familiar in that regard but the flow of the game is distinctly Halo which is the important part.

Looks terrible. (Not the graphics, which are OK.)
I thought i'd like Crysis-like features in Halo. Seeing them in action, i realize i do not want them here.
But they pale next to the fucking ADS (and Sprint in multiplayer, fine in campaign). No, you don't have to use it, but man...i hate the visual thing. I hated Destiny's ADS, i couldn't like BFBC2 again because of ADS, i really don't think i will like it in Halo (no matter it works differently). Also hate sprint so much. The shield-regen blocking feature is nice but doesn't fucking matter if one can just sprint into cover and then regen there.
Halo isn't one of those games where ADS is nice for immersion, it is not needed at all. Normal zoom, as it has been in the game for 10+ years is enough.

I have never been one to advocate a "pure" Halo, i've liked many additions to Halos over the years but usually those have been tame: Dual Wielding (some balance issues but fits the game well otherwise), Equipment (utility grenades, great!), Assassinations (super fun). Armor Abilities were fun in theory though in practice i didn't like them, still appreciate Bungie trying something new.
Halo's base-gameplay + something extra is what i want. I feel Halo 5 made it something different, too much so. And more importantly, wrongly so, change itself is not a problem.

And with these changes to Halo 5, i worry about the BTB, i worry they have made something drastic. For me, Halo is BTB, and Halo's base gameplay as it is is absolutely essential for good BTB.

Absolutely not hyped, nor interested in Halo 5 at this point.

Quick thoughts. The climbing looks better than I thought it would, not so strict. Like the new thrust abilities. Scopes, an option so not too much of a problem unless you hate the sight rather than full transparency.

Nothing wrong with the abilities or even ADS, but other than that, the game looks pretty much like Halo 4. Same sounds, animations, movement, weapons, you name it.

I think it's the first time in Halo history when a successor copies this much from its predecessor. I mean, it's the standard practice with videogames in general, but never has been with Halo.

It's very disappointing.

fake-edit: My reaction is probably amplified by the fact that I really dislike the overly-elaborated COD-style HUD graphics that Halo 4 introduced.
