Halo |OT14| They call it Halo

Nah, that hasn't actually worked in my experience. I clipped a "Stay Back!" medal I got in Extraction the other day by starting the film and not doing anything but play the film normally until the part I wanted, pressing A to start the clip, and pressing it again to end it. No voiceover.
Which is why I think something might have changed recently. Maybe.

Oh man I remember that - I asked him something about them then he said "Would you prefer we cut it entirely?"

Felt really sorry for him leading up to launch, he was getting shit left, right & center from a lot of people, myself included.

Yep I felt also pretty awful, also for Frankie, both got a lot of shit when they posted here, even though both of them hadn't actually developed some of the stuff they were confronted with.

That is the bad thing when you are the just 2 developers here, you get all the shit.

On another note I just bought 4 games..
Far Cry3
DmC
Anarchy Reigns
Lord of the Rings War in the North? (don't know the english title)

WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS WORLD!?!?

The answer was that people will update to the latest Halo. If Halo 3's gameplay was supposedly so great and Reach's so not great, everyone would have stayed on 3(or H2) and Reach would have been a ghost town. 3 decimated 2's population. Reach decimated 3's population. 4 decimated Reach. 5 will decimate 4.

Halo, as a series, has done pretty well at getting people to move forward to the next game.

Yes almost all people move to the latest Halo but the latest Halo stinks so people move to other games, the social aspect of Halo is that important.

Reach wasn't great but everyone here still played it so I got on and donged in Squad Slayer all day.

Its not really about if they went back to Halo 3 what would the population numbers be like, if they made a really good game, people would stay, and it'd bring others in.

Guy fucking griefed me the whole time in a match, on Longbow of all places, kept crouching, camo on and barely fucking moving. Fuck people like that, they are a pieces of shit and should be ashamed using such cheap tactics. Fuck that game, I left.

Don't be angry at players for using tactics like that, get angry at the developers for making them viable.

Sportsmanship should take precedence over viability, but I mostly agree. They put the damn camo and boltshot in, and people are going to use it, especially when going for a perfection challenge - that's all on 343.

Sportsmanship? In a video game? People are going to do whatever it takes to win.

I remember some good times in Quake 3 arena. If you went AFK people would leave you be (helped that it showed an icon above a player's head), and it was an unwritten rule to leave the BFG alone. Whoever would grab the BFG would get ganged up on, and then killed repeatedly with it to make the point clear.

The 'Play to Win' mentality is the worst thing to happen to video games. And of course I don't mean playing to win is bad, but putting winning above any other considerations and using whatever exploits or cheap tactics allow you to do so.

I never experienced good sportsmanship in video games. You're a lucky man.

I still remember playing Mario Cart 64 and having everyone either pause the game or slap the controller out of other people's hands.

Good times...

Well, that is a dumb thing to say. "Would you prefer we cut it entirely?" Ehm, no? We would prefer it if you did it properly and not half-assed, thank you.
I completely agree - but there reason was valid I suppose, it was out of their hands.

Pretty much, the fact David Ellis runs all that Spartan Ops stuff and nobody was bitching about Spartan Ops before launch but he was still getting shit was upsetting.

I understand that there were a lot of complaints before launch, but blowing steam off at Frankie & Ellis isn't gonna do much good, and it didn't.

I totally agree with this post.

Playing to win is absolutely fine when people do it in a way which makes it fun - I refused to use stuff like rockets in Halo 3 because its far more fun to BR. I would prefer to out BR people - so I would rather waste out rockets forcing people into BR battles.

Abusing cheap shit to win is just... dull.

Are we really talking about not playing to win? Winning is the reason you are playing. If you aren't actively trying to win you should be playing castle crashers or the latest twilight game for your iPad

Well I can only hope you get some pro playlists and skill rankings.
No need, I've long since resigned with H4 (nor are my comments about this directed towards it, just the mentality in general). If a game demands honour rules then something went wrong with designing it, it's not the player using it that you should take issue with as much as you should the design of having it there in the first place.

Which I did, but that doesn't take players entirely off the hook either. If you think camo and boltshots and PV or exploits of whatever else is cheap, don't use them.

And you can have some great times playing games with an honor system. Halo fans should know this.

Nice non sequitor.

Peoples opinions on whats cheap differs.
Yep. And the stuff I consider cheap is exactly the stuff I avoid. But that's me. Different strokes and all that.

Exactly my point. Winning is everything, "fun" is described as some kind of psychosis. It's one of the reasons I liked the Arena concept - it let me know which playlists to avoid.

I'll just avoid some peoples idea of fun.

This TU is too little too late. Ain't nobody got time for that.

So that you impose arbitrary limitations on yourself that others can abuse and get frustrated by? It does absolve the players using it because it ends up being a subjective slippery slope of what's kosher.

Though I prefer custom game options over honour rules, but yeah with friends it's okay to make up any limitations you want, but expecting matchmaking to abide by that or being disappointed that it doesn't is naive.

Its a video game. DMR battles are far more fun than camping a corner with a boltshot. Winning is secondary to having fun to me - but that doesn't mean I don't play skilfully. I guess playing skillfully is more fun to me than just winning.

I don't expect others to. But if more regulars did so you just might see more sportsmanship more often, like the Quake example I gave earlier. That stuff was across servers, and across a decent segment of the playerbase. But no, I don't expect it, nor do I expect that everybody plays games for the same reasons I do, because assuming there is only one reason and one way to play would be pretty narrowminded, wouldn't it?

Exactly. And just as I don't expect everybody else on my team to play for the same reason, I don't really count on then to win either ;P So I might have a great match but still lose - its the playing well that I enjoy.

Im pretty sure you have said you camp camo and sniper? You cant possibly say thats not cheap? Effective for sure, but its much cheaper than simply playing aggressively and spawn trapping.

To reitterate Juices's point, it's quite easy to find people who believe that is cheap too because you have a positional advantage. In fact, so many people took issue with it that the uber-dynamic spawn systems in Halo are now the norm.

The point being, "cheap" is subjective and this is a pointless debate.
