Halo |OT4| Trust's a Tough Thing to Come by These Days

Walshy made it sound like the multikill points actually filled your team's bar up. Pretty sure he specifically stated an assassination earning your team more points than a regular kill.

Yeah I know, and based on my own analysis of the scoreboard during the footage, the team score seemed to only change by 10 points when there was a kill.

It's worth noting in that War Games trailer, the Hog at :25 makes a leap and actually sticks the landing. In Reach, it would have resulted in a few barrel rolls before ultimately being blown up by a hail of DMR's & Nades.

Yeah, that actually bought a smile to my face.

I missed the Gamespot video. Link, please? And is that where that title menu shot came from? It's gorgeous.

That new game type actually sounds cool. More points for more skilled kills.
Totally. I, for one, welcome style points in Halo. Especially in social playlists.

Noticed this as well. Now we need official confirmation on whether vehicle health is tied to the player's.

Then Halo 4's vehicle combat will be pretty much golden.

Quoting a post from the gaming side, I had not seen the pic on top. I see a Scorpion, a Warthog, three Ghosts and a Wraith on a pretty big multi-level battlefield. That's already bigger than Reach's largest battle and approaching Halo 3 The Ark territory.

Sold.

The biggest question is why Master Chief is such an egotistic dick. Look at him, all posing up there and shit while the Spartan IVs have to fight a squad of Covenant vehicles by himself.

What an ass!

I'm gonna go ahead and outright say it: I've never been so hyped for a game before. Well except maybe diablo 3.... :( Which reminds me, time to change, sigh, my avatar.

The Storm Rifle & Carbine look way too similar, IMO.

At profile they do. From first person they look different, but I wonder if things like that are why they added the weapon name pop up when you get close to them. Without it, it would be hard to tell which is which until you were standing on them.

Chief knows what the ladies gamers like. Heroic poses with kick-ass scenery.

Cool. Welp, here's what I think of the campaign demo that was shown. Very positive overall. Concerns are mostly nit-picks at this point.

What I liked and what I really liked:

1. Cutscenes are gorgeous. They almost don’t look in-game. I love the abundance of colors and the skyboxes.
2. Okay. I have to admit that seeing the armor in-game, it looks a lot better.
3. The skyboxes are as impressive during gameplay as they are in the cutscene. I love that sequence of Covenant vehicles flying overhead.
4. Graphics are great.
5. BR sounds great.
6. I liked seeing the Covenant briefly. Especially the Elite pushing the Grunt.
7. Music, from what I heard, is a joy to listen to, and it’s very appropriate. Thumbs up.
8. Atmosphere for the jungle level (mist, lighting, etc.) is used to tremendous effect. Bravo.
9. I’m liking the sound of the AR.
10. The animations of the Forerunner weapons is fucking fantastic. Probably my favorite part of the campaign demo.
11. The SCREEN TURNS RED WHEN HURT mechanic doesn’t seem as prominent in campaign as it is in multiplayer. Most of the time when you get shot, there’s an arrow pointing you in the direction of the enemy fire. I would prefer it if we only had the arrows, but as of now it looks limited.
12. Enemy feedback looks up to par of past Halo games. Whoo!
13. Confirmation of Cortana’s rampancy. I’ve been waiting since the end of Halo 3 to see this, and it looks like Halo 4 will finally deliver. I remember a while ago I predicted a path for Cortana’s rampancy over the course of the three games. I think it went something like this: Halo 4, Cortana goes rampant near the end; Halo 5, Cortana (along with the Didact?) is your main enemy for the game; Halo 6, the rampancy issue is dealt with. The tension from not knowing when she’s going to go crazy while your playing through the campaign is going to be great.
15. First impressions of the Watchers and Knights are good, gameplay wise. We’ve never had an enemy that could throw your grenades back at you.
16. One last point. The Forerunner weapons seem to disintegrate any enemy they fire at. This is a wonderful fiction aspect about the weapons. At the height of the Forerunner war with the Flood, it would make sense for Forerunner weapons to disintegrate bodies so they can’t be re-purposed by the Flood.

What I’m unsure of:

1. Outlines of the Chief’s visor. I’ve said this before, but I’m not too fond of seeing part of my helmet in games. It makes me feel claustrophobic. That said, it’s barely there, so I’m not sure if I’ll be bothered by this or not. I do hope 343 provides the option of turning if off in the event it does bother me.
2. The design of the new enemies. I don’t think I’ll be able to decide until the release of the game. It’s weird. I haven’t seen anything that makes me think, “I like that!” On the other hand, I haven’t seen anything that says, “That doesn’t look good.”
3. The videoscreens of Cortana and others. I think my affinity for them will depend upon how often and in what situations they’re used. If used too often it could become very intrusive given the size of it. Right now I’d just prefer it if Cortana was audio only. It seems the video pops up only in situations where 343 is sure the player will not be in combat, and only audio in and around combat areas. Video of Cortana could indicate she’s not in the Chief’s suit at the time. He could be some sort of rogue element.
5. Looks like there is a mech in that clip show at the end there. Could indicate mech combat.
6. The QTEs (for lack of a better word). We see two or more of them in the demo, and like the video feed in Chief’s HUD, my affinity for them will depend on the situation and how often they’re used. If there are only one or two a level, that seems fine, but if they’re used a lot around combat spaces they could get annoying. QTEs are something I’d rather games avoid because they become less impressive the more times you play a game. Remember the Flood reveal? One cutscene and the game lets us experience the enemy on our own; nothing to restrict our movements.
7. One aspect about the enemies themselves: where you can hit them. Looking at the video, there seems to be only one place I can damage the Crawlers. There’s a sandbox in Halo to how you can deal damage to an enemy. Confining where I can hit an enemy to one or two places limits the options I have to deal with them. There are enemies like this in past Halo games – Scarabs, Hunters – but those aren’t common enemy types. I can’t tell if this applies to the Knights or the Watchers.

Questions/Concerns

1. As I speculated before, the floating ball is the Didact’s cryptum. Cortana says at one point, “We know where he’s heading.” That implies the pair knows about the Didact’s before this point. Perhaps the Chief awakens him? If the Didact is our ancient enemy, and given his opposition to firing the Halo rings, I wouldn’t be surprised if humans were the ones to use the rings in the end. I don’t think this is how it plays out in the terminals, though. Memory’s a bit fuzzy.
2. What was that red scanner right before the Didact’s sphere flew off?
3. Hit-markers in campaign. Why? What’s the point? Hit-markers, to me, are an entirely multiplayer HUD element that pokes annoyingly at the campaign experience. I hope we can turn them off.
4. This was a demonstration. 343 wanted to show certain gameplay elements, but at the same time wanted to convey certain information – whether it be weapons, enemies, dialogue, etc. – and as a result the demo is very scripted. What I would like to know – if David or Frankie could clarify – is how different the actual product is. When we play the same space in November, how different will our experience be? Will it be mostly different? How much of what we saw was tuned for E3? In the campaign demonstration we saw with Reach during “The Long Night of Solace,” the only scripted event I remember seeing was the Ghost running into Carter and him armor-locking. What are this demo’s equivalents?
5. “We’re without power. How is the captain using the ship’s comm then? :p
6. Could the marketing be misleading? As of the end of Primordium, “an ancient evil” is not one of the first things I would use to describe the Didact. Maybe he’s a rogue faction?

Probably. I am happy to see the Carbine back, I loved using it in 3, even after they nerfed it from the beta!

Yeah that would make sense, but then we saw the Laser in one of the leaks. :/

More evidence that I think the individual and team scoring is separate (assists and assassinations give you more individual points, but team score is only affected by the kills. From the gametypes page on the Halo 4 site:

include a scoring system which separates both individual and team performance

New Support Upgrades

SENSOR UPGRADE
Although it violates general UNSC relay transmission regulations, the Sensor Upgrade increases both the range and sensitivity of the standard motion sensor. As it is most frequently utilized by stealth operatives and infiltration specialists, this upgrade provides heightened locational intel of all nearby enemies.

And this one....... seriously 343?

AWARENESS UPGRADE
Facilitating relatively minor adjustments in an armor system’s HUD-distributed display mechanics, the Awareness Upgrade integrates the default motion sensor into all known scoped weapon smart-links, both native and exotic. Spartans engaging in long-range combat or sniper operations often rely on this upgrade to provide them with basic motion-sensor data while sighting an enemy from afar.

LOL U4X is in damage control mode it seems (after his twitter tantrum). This dude seems to be getting a pretty bad ego, it's not going to reflect well on THC, which I was beginning to like.

Good gravy, e-peen measuring at its finest.

Protip: the people who call themselves the "Day[9] of Halo" will never be the Day[9]'s of Halo.*

*Also, that's odd in that I have seen very few casters focus on actually improving player's skills like Day[9] does with Starcraft. I'm not sure you could do a daily stream on Halo fundamentals, but either way that man does way more than any Halo pro I've seen--no offense to the people running all the Halo sites, though.

I wonder what "basic" means. Perhaps you can see your allies but not your enemies, or your motracker range is limited?

I don't understand how a rail gun isn't considered an A/V weapon.

The ones we have currently launch projectiles with such speed that they ignite the air itself.

Dax: Replaced with the Sticky Detonator.
Haha, wouldn't that suck.

Wait.

...

I don't like that sticky detonator. In campaign? fine. But in multiplayer? I won't feel like I did much to earn a kill using it, and I sure as hell won't feel bested when killed by one. It seems to have all the adversarial opportunities and fun to it as stepping on a landmine.

Edit: And yeah - they really should mix up those Covenant weapon profiles. Halo also means readability.

Firepower Package

By alternating redundant magnetic streams at the rear of a Spartan’s armor, the Firepower Package overrides regulated loadout limitations, allowing users to carry two primary weapons simultaneously. For Spartans who prefer heavier or longer-ranged firepower over close-range versatility and speed, this package is typically considered imperative.

To carry, or to start with? Sounds like the weapons you carry could be limited by their classification; i.e. no DMR and BR unless you have this package selected. Otherwise, limited to one main and one side arm weapon at a time. Not leaping to conclusions, but clarification would be neat.

It might just enable different starting load outs.

I wonder if the Sensor Upgrade is level based, and without the perk it's just the standard radar from 1/2/3? I'd be ok with this. I'm not that offended by radar showing up while scoped either.

Isn't one of the perks a faster shield recharge? I feel like everyone will use that one...

I'm happy that they're embracing cosmetic stuff, really no reason not to. Weapon skins, crazy armor skins, helmets, etc. are perfectly fine for an unlockable rank system. I feel it's the reason Reach's rank system fell flat, you basically had everything you wanted way before you were even out of the military ranks.

Although, knowing MS, all of the weapon skins will be paid DLC, meh.
