Halo Reach Forge |OT| - Create, Share & Kill

Thought I'd post an update on the final layout on Crossroads (or near final - one more tweak to go before customs tomorrow). I've done a rebuild of the bases which streamlined and focused them a bit, but just as importantly netted me nearly $1,000 in budget. I used that to finish securing the sides of the map and to add some new features. The most important are a few new routes for infantry so there's more flexibly in how the map flows for them. I tried to pinpoint a few areas where players could feel stranded a long ways from key junctures, and added some ways to get them out more quickly.

The new bases:

Update1.jpg

The concept is similar, but it uses just one building and so is both less cluttered and more compact. Some blocks make the lower portion feel like an actual building now rather than a bunch of pillars.

The most important addition here is the man cannon has moved to onto the base itself, rather than on the flipped walkway next to it. If you snag a flag, and don't have a ride waiting, take the man cannon.

Update2.jpg

You'll land (damage-free) down here, with cover on either side.

Update3.jpg

Another use for it is to launch and then hang a left toward head down toward rocket spawn, or the tunnels to the lower level.

Update4.jpg

Down in the center, there is a man cannon pointing toward each base now. That can be used for rocket retrieval, fall back, or for attackers to have a new way to get to the base much more quickly on foot.

The other addition is the ramped platform below the base, which wraps around and up next to it. This provides a third way to the top level from below the base. There was a lot of dead space down there before.

Update5.jpg

You'll land at the top of the ramp, next to the base.

Loving the changes, Ghaleon. I can't wait to try it out.

Anyway, was there even Halo/ForgeGAF Customs at all? I logged on and didn't see a single person online.

Not sure, I got home later than usual tonight, so I was unable to make it.

Hopefully we'll still be able to do them tomorrow at the usual ForgeGAF customs time of 2pm PST/5pmEST/10pm UK.

I had a great idea for a game type but unfortunately couldn't find a way of getting it to work. I wanted to make a 6v6 Invasion type using the Infection style. Six Infected vs six Humans, with the Infected attacking - when two Humans became infected it would open the next stage and move on, another two and onto the final stage, and the final two winning the game, or if the Humans hold them off they win.

I spent a good hour going through options and settings trying to think of a way of getting it to work... and no luck :,(

Guess i'll just start a new map instead. I've got a good idea to use the one side of Hemorrhage where both the caves are and the open area in between. I might be able to string out a BTB fight if I use some of the outside around it too... so many ideas!

I will be around for tonight's customs. If we can get some more together, we could try out Crossroads as well. Not actually had the chance to play that one yet properly.

>.< I still won't be able to make it to customs blargh.

Well could some dedicated forger download and test my maps for me and also save replays of the vids?

In order of necessity:

Meltdown 4-12 players. Ideally testing CTF, and then Team Slayer

Opposition 4-12 players. Ideally testing CTF, and then Team Slayer

Valhavalanche 8-16 players. Ideally testing CTF

Since I know time is limited for customs, I'd most importantly like CTF tested on Meltdown and Opposition.

Thanks!

I set 'em all to download, and we'll try to get to them all :) Just like the last few weeks I'll put up films of them for download assuming we actually get enough to run a full customs

Oh, and an update -- ForgeGAF customs start in about 45 minutes! Time is winding down for the Forgetacular contest so if you want some footage of your maps, be sure to join in!

Have to work at 5EST *sniff sniff* Thanks Timetokill

oh and if spawns or something else doesn't work on CTF for those two maps, vids of slayer games on them will do fine

Sorry Insaniac :( Maybe we can also get something together tomorrow sometime? It'd be great to have you on as well.

Tomorrow is a possibility, I work morning, and I'm on call evening, but following those weeks I'll have the evenings free...

Sent you a FR, timetokill. I don't have a map to test out, but I'm happy to help out. Got a friend who'll probably tag along, assuming there's room.

God damn it :( My internet connection totally died right as the second game wrapped up. Thanks a lot, AT&T!

Sorry for the triple post, but there has been plenty of time :lol

Sorry all, load of work just dropped in my lap. Won't be able to make it. I look forward to seeing all the replays of the new maps.

Damn it Raide, we already did (and ruined... due to my internet connection) the ForgeGAF customs. It's at 10pm your time. ALREADY HAPPENED!

Noooooooooooo! How many players did you get in?

Ugh, B.net isn't showing the pictures I uploaded today to post on here of my progress on "Roost". Wasn't feeling like Forging, but sketched out the rest of the level and started and pretty much finished Blue base (minus the weapons, outer walls, and polishing but that'll be later, maybe). Sadly, I start putting needed stuff in the level, then see a object and think "THAT'LL BE GREAT OVER THERE DERP" and dress it up when most of it isn't even done.

....which is why I'm over half way through with my forge bucks limit. :|

I also fell in love with Window, Colosseum today

Damn, missed Customs. :(

How was it?

Sucked :( We had two good matches, and then AT&T decided to drop internet service for about 45 minutes. When I came back everyone was doing something else, as would be expected :(

We had 9-10 right before everything went to hell.

Do you know any crazy gametypes & maps besides Smashball? I've heard a bit about that ghostbusters thingy, but with how many players are you supposed play it?

Ghostbusters is best played with 16 players on Hemorrage. Ghostbuster 2.0 will be ready shortly.

I was wondering what happened to you. Figured it was an internet problem.

Yeah, I'm really sorry about it. Incredibly frustrating. And we had a lot of newer people playing too, it would've been great to show off more of the fantastic ForgeGAF maps to everyone.

Ah well, we'll have to give it another shot this week.

Didn't see this was posted yet, but it really helped me complete a project I had in mind and I imagine a few others will find it useful as well:

For some time now I have been bothered by the rotation of objects in forge 2.0. If you are building a ramp that isn't in line with the x or y axis then when you tilt it up it will go diagonal. After some experimentation I've found out that it is because forge renders objects by performing the Roll, then the Pitch, then the Yaw. This means that creating a ramp that is not parallel to an axis can be problematic at best.

Being a mathematician at heart I was determined that there must be a way to convert the angles I wanted in my head to the angles used by forge's implementation of Yaw, Pitch and Roll. After much searching on the subject of rotations in 3D and Euler angles I have come up with a formula to convert the angle system I want to use in to forge's angle system.

After a bunch of playtesting and reworking some spots to reduce the framerate issue, I've got a new version of Crown of Flies up in my fileshare for you guys to check out. Most of the changes made were in effort to reduce framerate issues, but a couple were made to improve gameplay as well.

Overview - I've reworked the lower patio to have a lot less objects, and I've swapped out for a smaller man-cannon. Instead of shooting you to the door of the main room, it'll now plop you just past the edge of the upper patio.

z1tsg.jpg

Main (rocket) room - I reworked the rocket platform to make the initial rush for rockets a little more of a strategic effort. I also removed some excess 4x4 blocks and swapped them for coliseum walls.

Basement - I was never really happy with the area around the bottom of the lift, and I think this is a much better alternative. Sniper spawns on the little table next to the lift, similar to previous iterations.

That's about it for this version. I ran around this in splitscreen spraying a bottomless AR clip and couldn't find any problems with framerate, but that may not mean anything once this fills up with 8 people. The forgetacular submission is creeping up fast, so if you guys get any games on this without me (I'll send you a FR, timetokill), any feedback you have would be awesome. Thanks!

Heya gang. I have had a good break from Forge, mainly to play some more MP and get some more ideas for maps.

What are peoples thoughts on making a reverse CTF game where the attacking team starts with the flag and have to escort it a long distance to capture it? I little like Assault but CTF.

I am working on an asymmetric map, where 1 team has the flag and a very defensive position, yet the drop point is in a fairly open spot, dotted with cover, where the other team start.

Just thinking random stuff to get some more map ideas flowing. :D

Last week was fun, except for not being able to test out many maps. :lol Looking forward to checking out some more this time around.

Also, Donkey Kong map is awesome. Will download.

ForgeGAF customs in about an hour! 2pm PST/5pm EST/10pm UK!

If you have a map and you want to get footage of it for the Forgetacular contest, today is a great day to get that!
