Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Halo 2. Nuf said. I know Eazy is going to go off on this post and what not, but he's only played Halo 2 a little bit and in my opinion needs to stop putting it down. I hope Bungie goes back to the faster pace of Halo 2. With hitscan and such being implemented (maybe) it would feel much better than Halo 3. Havinng to lead shots unnecessarily slows down the gameplay.
I'd actually prefer it if they speed it up from Halo 3, especially with the amount of autoaim in the game.

And stop being so paranoid, dude.

after not touching h3 in like 6 months and playing mw2 nonstop it felt too slow. so i too think they should speed it up a little bit

When was the last time you had to wait that long to getting a match? It usually takes me about thirty seconds, and no longer than two minutes.

The matchmaking does take a LONG time - but comparing it to COD's matchmaking is like comparing a Blind driver to a Old driver.

One is slow steady and gets from point A - B safely eventually

The other is fast but fucks up a LOT.

The thing is I prefer not loosing teammates and getting good even matches in terms of connection and skill - BUT I would like to get into matches a lot quicker - meh not totally happy either way but Halo wins that round for reliability (in my opinion).

I agree with you there, it'd be awesome if the matches could go faster. But I'm thinking that one reason that COD's Matchmaking is, in general, faster is because it looks for any game with a player opening, not just matches looking for players before the game starts. Unfortunately, it sacrifices the feeling of being on a team for speed.

But this is not a COD thread, so I'm just gonna hope that Bungie increases the matchmaking efficiency.

I'm sure they will.

Been playing a lot of Super Mario World on SNES lately. Now the jumping in Halo feels too weak. Jumping in Reach should definitely be higher.

Also, there should be a cape that lets you fly.

A cape won't help you get headshots. *tear*

God of War 3 looks awesome - how about some axes strapped onto the spartans arms

DO IT BUNGIE!!!

I was going to say something about copying GTA but I realised were getting civilian vehicles now - I wonder how thats going to work, its obviusly going to be pretty limited as I doubt they would go to the lengths that rockstar do with making hundreds of cars - but if not it would just feel fake, so hmm?

That's right! And who needs to get headshots when I can rain down bullets with my AR?

stop playing MW2 and play Quake for 6 months... then you will say MW2 felt too slow. Its natural that once you get over the learning curve of a fast game and get used to the speed... anything slower then that game will feel, well, slower. Also remember that even though MW2 has faster running, the maps are also smaller giving you the ablilty to reach point B from point A faster then in maps as large as halo. The fact that halo doesnt have sprinting and has maps twice the size of MW2 maps may cause you to have that "are we there yet?" feeling which is only caused from getting used to faster, shorter games.

You don't think that the reason you feel halo 3 is a bit slow might be because you've just come back to it after playing a game with a quicker pace, NONSTOP for 6 months? :lol

At least take some time to get used to halo 3 again before saying they should give it a speed buff

Would anyone else like to go 1st person when you are a passenger in a vehicle?

Was it back in Halo 1 when you could? I remember looking in awe as the speedometer on the hog would change.
Was that H2?

I have perhaps been playing too much Forza 3/Battlefield 1943 and would now like a dashboard cam when commandeering vehicles. I always wondered what one would see from the cockpit of a banshee....

Halo has always had third person driving. Always. If you need a reason that first person driving in an FPS leads to frustration, play and drive in Half Life 2, then drive around a warthog in any Halo game. If you don't think Halo's system is better, I'd be very interested to here why.

I believe that's exactly what he was implying. :D I'll be honest I wouldn't mind a slight speed increase, or just give us sprint without making it an equipment pick-up.

P.S.- Damn all these Juniors causing 500 errors!!!! Wait a second........(slowly backs out the door and runs off)

You've never been able to drive a vehicle from a first person perspective, however you could still see the speedometer bar increase and decrease when you were accelerating and breaking, just had to look from the right angle I think :)

Oh god no. First person in the passenger seat of a Hog in H1 was barf inducing.

Being able to view saved films from a first person pov in vehicles would be quite cool imo, would make for some awesome splatter clips!

Well, wasn't there a time when the passenger of the hog looked out in 1st person? It always discouraged me from hopping in as a passenger in a hog/hornet/mongoose because I would not be able to fire properly because of that over the shoulder thing it does.

In Battlefield 1943 one has the option to easily switch between 3rd and 1st person perspectives. It works really well actually. Mostly because you need the accuracy given in 1st person to get your shots right whereas if you just want to keep tabs on your surroundings the 3rd person really comes in handy. Plus the added immersion was a great thing too.

It did. Was fun to mess around but didn't really make any sense as all of the other seats were viewed from 3rd person. Hornet 1st person sort of makes more sense so that you can look down. I guess.

Yeah, the one passenger would have a first person view. Out of the three people in the hog, the passenger was the only one in first person. It was a blast actually. But i can see why its not like that anymore.

Everything you said is true but the majority of the community only wants to do one thing: Jump into a reliable game quickly with their friends. People look at earned levels as a sense of progress, and a goal they aim for as they play. Many couldn't care less if the quality of opponents are significantly improving. In fact the majority of the community is not going to complain so long as they keep winning so softer competition isn't a deterrent. Like in Halo 2 those who are serious about real comp will look towards customs, gamebattles and tournaments.

Personally I lean towards the camp that would prefer longer matchmaking times for the sake of stronger matches. Part of the reason why I jumped off the CoD4 train was because I didn't feel a sense of progression in my matches despite all of the perks and customizations awarded. No matter how long I kept playing there were very few challenging matches my party faced. Halo 3 on the otherhand was the opposite...there would be strings of matches even with my team of 4 that were all difficult but between getting shitty maps, gametypes and etc that left a sore as well.

I say just throw in 200 levels for reach with matchmaking skills looking for gaps of 25 and 50 and force players to be proficient in all gametypes to get the biggest shiny medal of prestige.

One thing that I love about Halo's matchmaking is that you have that choice. Whether it be connection speed, or player skill, or if you just want to get matched up as quickly as possible.

Oh god Super Mario World was the first game I ever beat as a kid. I hold a special place in my heart for that game. I agree though about the cape and also...Yoshi in Reach or bust :/

Also just got Verizon FiOs today at my house. Fuck me it's amazing. I get some pretty ridiculous download speeds including an upload that hovers around 20mbits/s. Still doesn't change the fact that I lost 12/15 games and dropped my 49 in MLG. I can't wait to go on the epic winning streak to get my 50 back. Slumping HARD. :/

Btw do any other MLG players here find it damn near impossible to be successful in H3 on a high def set? I rock it hard pretty easily in MW2 but I get outshotted constantly on my high def in H3...

On standard def its like my skill doubles...reaction time, accuracy and all.

I tend to do better on a high def set because I can see everything clearer, if you are on a bigger TV I find it good to change my look sensitivity to compensate. Switching between SD and HD however is incredibly difficult to get used to.

Could be all personal preference though.

I think I'm going to cry. Highest upload speed available in the UK is 2.5Mbps.
But that's only with one ISP. All the others are stuck between 320Kbps or 768Kbps.

A 50Mbps/320Kbps connection is the most thouroughly retarded thing I have ever seen.

Not an MLG player but yeah, I find I play better on my SDTV than I do on my monitor. Most likely because I sit only a foot away from the monitor rather than relaxing way back on the couch. :p

People hate to admit it and don't want to actually say it here on GAF but CoD's faster pace has spoiled them. A lot of my friends who loved Halo CE and 2 admit to being fairly bored with Halo 3 mechanics now.

The simple fact is that everything about MW2 is faster and easier done than Halo 3. The gameplay allows even bad players to enhance their play by carefully choosing perks and weapon additions, the pacing of the game is much faster, you don't have to think nearly as hard or play as a team like in Halo, and the matchmaking is much faster. Compare this to Halo where it takes forever to load maps, has double the matchmaking time and forces a more slower tactical gameplay.

I think Bungie will keep the core of Halo intact, but I would be surprised if 343 industries take on things doesn't offer a huge change.

So basically you want Halo to turn into a game for noobs? No thanks.

YES

I can't stand playing Halo on my 16:9 HDTV set. It's a fucking nightmare. I play on a 16:10 22 inch monitor with 5ms refresh rate. It's glorious! I don't play at max resolution (1680X1050) because then I wouldn't be able to stream but it's still great. Also playing with a monitor forces me to play with Headphones and my Sennheiser HD555's are godly to play with.

Did you know all those times you were having fun playing Halo, working in a team, planning things and the rest? Yeah, you weren't having fun, at all, even if you thought you were!

Also... HOW YOU AM MIC?! I use my HD485's for SP but in MP the voice chat is just way too quiet to put through them and there is no chance in hell i'm sticking a headset speaker in between my ears and that lovely sound.
I'm left using little crappy speakers for MP until I can pay out for fancy shit that solves the problem. :(

I find Halo 3 matchmaking to be quite fast. Very comparable to CoD.

In order for Halo to be more like CoD, lots of things would have to change. In CoD iron sights are fine because kills happen extremely quickly. You see someone, you bring up iron sights, you pop them, and then move along. In Halo, it takes a decent amount of time to kill someone. Imagine iron sights in Halo 3 where two people are just sitting there cranking on each other for like 3 seconds with the AR. Not much movement going on due to slow move speeds, and melee is taken out of the equation. Iron sights are good for quick kills and also works because of quick kills.

Having shields also makes fast movement speed an issue. Kills from a distance are almost negated unless environments are incredibly huge. Someone starts getting shot and then sprints off behind cover to let their shields recharge. Weapons would need to be much more powerful.

i think most people want halo to be faster because 1 and 2 were faster.. not because of call of duty, lol

first-person while in vehicles should be an option! more options! i like options!

This is actually why I like the armor-abilities idea, at least in theory. Sprint could drain shield energy to use, and if you're restricted from firing while sprinting that would help some of these balance issues. It really becomes a means of fast travel over short distances, which is all I feel is missing.

I don't know why are you laughing. He's got a point. Actually everything he said was true. And that is exactly what makes CoD easier and way more noob friendly. And because of that CoD multiplayer is no where as fun as Halo. The slow pace, the huge learning curve, the constant dependence on your team and everything that is not in CoD are what makes Halo a better shooter and a better game imo. He's also right about how slow the matchmaking process is.

How does anyone have slow matchmaking times in Halo? The only time I've ever had to wait over 30 seconds is in a playlist that has a terrible population and I'm in the high levels. Examples would be Throwback & Squad Battle.

By living in Europe, I guess. I have a 100/10mb connection with 7ms ping to the speedtest.com server in my country and 30ms to one in the UK yet I always have to wait around 1-2 minutes to find a match and about 90% of the time I get matched with players with crappy connections from the US/Mexico (ping bar with 3 or 4 blocks most of the time).

Having a option to restrict matchmaking by region in Reach would be a godsend!

I agree partly with Faze, but not entirely. Agree that COD is more casual friendly than Halo, despite Halo 3 leaning more towards that phase from Halo 1 and Halo 2.

First person driving sucks, I think (if I can move the view in games like BF I do it immediately). I think it was Halo 1's passenger side that used the first-person view style, though. I didn't mind it, but for driving, definitely like Halo's general style.

I was hoping that drastic huge change would be coming in Reach since its not part of the trilogy. There is still hope , we will find out during the beta.
