Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

As you can tell, you're in the very low minority. Most people here only have to wait 2 minutes tops. I live in Canada, but I lived in Australia for two years and still didn't have the problems you're describing. Something is hinky - your connection is horrible, or your router is broken, or your 360's network card is broken.

How are other games' matchmaking? I'm guessing they're just as bad for you. This isn't something Bungie or even Microsoft can fix for you, I think.

Only Halo 3. Heck I managed to play CoD 4 online while using my N95 as a router :lol

This week was pretty good, I just went to check, 2-7 minutes, but I've had days where I'd spend two hours in front of the Xbox and play only 45-60 minutes of it..

By experience it isn't. You might have noticed not everything is "logical" when it comes to Halo multiplayer.
By my personal experience, it is. But anecdotal evidence brings us nowhere, so I'll drop this point.
What do you count as "extreme ends of low-population playlists" ? 2 000 players should be enough.
If you're referring to Throwback, the 2000 players is not just people looking for matches, but also people in game. I'd be willing to bet that there are less than ten percent of a playlist looking for matches at any given time, and the problem is further compounded by trying to find games which would be fun. 2000 players isn't enough in all playlists.
I'm an American living in France. I've got a good connection (18d/1u), and get host my share of times when I'm playing against other Europeans, but the best connection in the world won't help when I'm paired with 7 Californians.
I can't debate that if you are getting matched with shitty connections in california, the game will suck.
Where did I say it wouldn't look for skill as well? When you search for good connections does skill suddenly stop factoring in the equation? Just give us the option, please.
I'm not sure what that has to do with search by region...
I'm not saying search in my small 50 000 person city in eastern France, I'm saying search in Europe.
It's easy to say that if your in a big region (like Europe or America), but not so easy if you're in a lower-population area, like Japan or Australia. Bungie shouldn't ship a feature that wouldn't work for everybody.
Re-read please before trying to bring this down to some Bnet level shit. I've been there, I know what it's like, you must be blind to think this is the same thing. Re-read, I said drop the skill factoring after a certain amount of time has elapsed.
Please re-read what I said before assuming I'm retarded. I'm saying that an option to ignore rank would create more dumb Bnet threads, not that this is. This is an intelligent, logical discussion which could never occur in Optimatch.
Not sure what you where replying to..?
I was responding to this:
Highest skill needs to be taken into the equation when making "balanced" teams.

Have you read the article? What you just described is called the BR..
Carbine is single shot with a higher damage per bullet. That sounds more like the second hand descriptions I've gotten of the Deemer. Again, I've not read the GI article. I'm waiting for my copy.

By the way, where did "No Elites in multiplayer" come from? There's no mention of that in EDGE article.
I was also thinking that. Although it mentions players can customise their armour in multiplayer, that doesn't mean Elites aren't there either. Although the Elite's are now less hunched which may lead people to believe they have been designed from a campaign perspective. We'll see.

I really want to see the multiplayer now.

They're also slimmer which would be a much more fitting alternative to Spartans that the hunched, wide Elites of yore. At the same time, these Spartan models should be smaller than the standard Spartan model we're used to so the Elite should be taller. If they're out I won't really miss them too much but I like having the option there.

I know the difference, I was just saying that most people in North America have less problems than people elsewhere. I know it's not black and white.

Reach should tell us how many people are searching then.
I'm not sure what that has to do with search by region...
"Search for close games, first in X region, then if you don't find anything, search anywhere."
It's easy to say that if your in a big region (like Europe or America), but not so easy if you're in a lower-population area, like Japan or Australia. Bungie shouldn't ship a feature that wouldn't work for everybody.
Americas, Europe, Asia/Oceania should be enough. Sorry to the people playing Halo in Mombasa or Riyadh, but there's not enough of you to get a whole category. "Feature that wouldn't work for everybody" Uhh, just look at the emblem contest, or the BE A HERO shirt. Not everything Bungie does is for everyone in the world. Saying no to regional matchmaking because the ten people playing Halo in Yemen wouldn't be able to use it is pretty stupid IMO.
Please re-read what I said before assuming I'm retarded. I'm saying that an option to ignore rank would create more dumb Bnet threads, not that this is. This is an intelligent, logical discussion which could never occur in Optimatch.
Oh, who cares then? :lol

high skill needs to be taken into account when putting players in two teams.

Example: playlist skill (high skill)
34 (46) vs 35 (47)
33 (50) 32 (41)
30 (47) 32 (39)
27 (48) 25 (34)

Does this feel like a great match up if you're that 35 (47) dude? I mean, both teams have a total 124 skill in that playlist, so it must be good, right?

edit:

32 (41) vs 35 (47)
33 (50) 30 (47)
32 (39) 34 (46)
27 (48) 25 (34)

Would you agree that this be better?

Carbine is single shot with a higher damage per bullet. That sounds more like the second hand descriptions I've gotten of the Deemer.[/QUOTE]

The Carbine has a 2x scope like the BR, and kills in roughly the same time as the BR does. The Sniper has a 5x/10x scope and kills in one or two shots. Seems like the DMR is between the two (3x scope and TSK (?) ). That'd make the Needler rifle the Covie equivalent to the DMR then (TSK). Is the Carbine still in?

Again, I've not read the GI article. I'm waiting for my copy.
Happy reading =)

Another point from the EDGE article which had me salivating at the mouth was Bungie's dedication to make the Covenant's plasma weapons dangerous and visceral. This is something the novels always managed to transmit but was never realised in the game. The feeling that a blast of plasma could burn through anything is something I can't wait to experience in Reach.
YES!

The best plasma was in Halo 1, where even the plasma pistol was a good weapon to fall back on in a tight situation, but still not the flesh melting nightmare we read about in even the earliest novels!

Watch the ooooold ass trailer for Halo from Mac Wiorld '99. The Plasma Rifles were rapid and more streamlined, similar to the Halo 2/3 Covenant Turrets (the portable ones). i always wondered why Bungie changed it.

Quick and dirty Halo '99 vid (plasma rifles around 1:17 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebI5lkLRTdg&feature=related

here is a different video with multiple Spartans, but still has the old Plasma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J_nxAJzhZ4o

Yes, I am a huge fan of the new Elite model. Looks really similar to the glory days of CE, wort wort. I myself never choose an Elite model unless I am going in to play some Swat. But even there, I would prefer everyone to just pick a regular Spartan model. Bring on the flood of multiplayer media Urk, starting with next weeks BWU.

I agree, It'd be nice to see how many people are searching, perhaps give us an estimated time for finding a game. In face, I agree with many of your recent points, so I'll just drop it now.

And my Game Informer subscription WOULD run out right before the Reach issue. I renewed it in December, but there's apparently still a turnover until I get my subscription.

I thought it was confirmed the recent Edge article that there would be no more Elites in MP?
There isn't anything in the EDGE article that even references multiplayer outside of the comment that player customization will carry over to multiplayer. It seems that, based off that one statement, that people are assuming that Spartan models will be the only available player model.

5-10 minutes on average?!? Damn that blows, I get better times playing Halo 2 right now lol.

Lol so do I. That's why I know it's not my connection. This week was pretty good I got some games in two minutes :D

No Elites in MP makes me happy. The only alt I ever made, to play with my cousin who isn't at all at the same skill level as me, is called SWATEliteIsNoob :lol Must have played only a couple games with it :lol

It would great for elites to return to MP with their new models. They would be a head taller, but maybe make up for it by being a bit slimmer?

I suppose you could say the article may please hardcore Halo 2 mutliplayer fans with the confirmation that the bullets would no longer take time to reach the reticule's destination. The fact that the BR/DMR will feel (Halo 2) powerful again is a great bonus.

I guess it's safe to assume that Firefight will make a return in Reach, hopefully it will have matchmaking this time around. I only got to play it in ODST like twice...

Eh.. unless the format changes I'm not sure. Drop in/drop out becomes an even bigger issue if there's matchmaking.

Completely this. In the books plasma is god damn scary. It rips through Marines like nobodies business. I'm going to love seeing that in Reach.

It's pretty sweet. I only have a problem with this, but I can say it since i'm
not
good at photoshopping.

The front of the helmet looks kinda weird, looks like his face is where his chin should be.

Other than that, It's really really awesome

If there is no MM for it, I hope it simply isn't included. Use the disk space more for multiplayer maps. Rather have something advanced in Forge where we an edit a ton of things, and a custom games browser.

Maybe we'll have an advanced Forge with Firefight options, like where the enemies spawn, and how many.

Yeah i started this piece when there were only GI screens on the net and no scans. There are a lot of things that are off but i didnt notice it until after GI and Edge scans. I had little sources to see the design of the armor so the overall design and position is kinda screwed up since i was so busy looking for how its supposed to look that i overlooked a lot of things that i dont notice until now. But i do see what you mean.

But it really turned out awesome. Great job :D

So, while doing nothing productive, I was perusing some of the GDC topics for this year. Naturally, I looked at who from Bungie would be giving talks, and I stumbled across a little presentation entitled Design in Detail: Changing the Time Between Shots for the Sniper Rifle from 0.5 to 0.7 Seconds for Halo 3. What really got me interested in it was the takeaway, however:
Hopefully, by the end of the session you will be given some insight into how Halo was balanced, understand how such a small change has such large consequences, and learn some tools that will help you make your own tiny, insignificant, massive changes.
I'm thinking that watching this could perhaps give us insight into why the gimped plasma after Combat Evolved and perhaps give us an insight into how they're going to make fanboys rage for Reach.

Looking forward to seeing the deck on Bnet.

the thing that bugged me most about halo 3 matchmaking was how you would only get matched against other groups if you were in a group

when i went into matchmaking alone, this is what happened:
after some lame games, i finally find some good teammates
we totally destroy the enemy and decide to party up
now, because we're a full group, search takes forever
after we finally found a match after 10 minutes, it turns out we were matched up against a clan, who totally destroyed us
next game, more or less the same story, except it wasn't a clan, just a group of people who play together regularly
everyones motivation is down bis this point and the group disbands

what the fuck? why should we be punished if we party up? if someone goes into TEAM slayer or big TEAM battle alone, they should be prepared to face full teams and lose, or go get some backup themselves, or they could just stick to FFA gametypes
way to punish the people who are doing it right, bungie

how about just making a mercenary playlist similar to modern warfare 1+2, where no groups can join, and if you venture into any other team playlist, you should be prepared to face full teams

It's not a bad thing they decided to force that (a bunch of good players together who play regularly vs. a ton of randoms also isn't exactly "fair", either).

I wouldn't mind if it was no requirement at all. I also hope ranks are more similar to Halo 2, which were challenging, rather than Halo 3's quick, unbefitting system.

I would hate that idea; as I said, just make it where there is no requirement.

My guess about the story behind the pic:

The Pelican was supposed to extract the two Spartans but it came in late and one of them got killed by a plasma shot to the head. The big green guy blames the commanding officer for this and a couple of ODSTs hold him back before he does something stupid.

If the commanding officer had shot the Spartan no one could hold him back and he wouldn't be pointing fingers, he would crack skulls.

I'm not sure whether the ODST's were in the Pelican or on the ground with the Spartans during the battle but I guess they were with the extraction crew aboard the Pelican since only the Spartans have smoke around them from the plasma burns and the atmospheric conditions.

It is cool. is that from Halo CE? looks amazing.

The ODSTs have BR so it can't be from Halo CE. The Spartans seem to wear either Mark V or Mark IV armor, the former would point at spec artwork or artwork for an unknown project (Chronicles?) and the latter would mean it was early Halo Wars artwork.

...or it's super high quality fan art
