Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Nobody's saying you should move slower, just that the player should be able to feel some weight to their character when you hit the ground, for example.

Bad Dax! No! Physics doesn't belong to anyone.

Real physics > whatever Gui was going on about. (in terms of realism)

Whatever Gui was going on about > real physics (in terms of fun)

You and I both know it's because the vast majority of Halo players who are terrible probably whined about getting crushed by the sniper. Snipe is like the most balanced weapon in the game right now. You have to be totally aware of your surroundings before you switch to it, you have a limited number of bullets, you get kicked out of scope when you take any damage and you have to hit a moving target with a tiny reticule. This is not the weapon to be altering, Bungie.
My "question" was pretty leading because I fear these may very well be the reason. You have people like Dax who complain that the sniper is too hard to use and yet in the same sentence say it's overpowered. I really think Halo 3's sniper mechanics were almost perfect but holes in the medium-long range combat surrounding the sniper were lacking. I'd say that on occasion the sniper can go too unchallenged when one team is stuck with Halo 3's BRs (let alone ARs) but DMR starts would add that challenge back into those scenarios. I truly don't know how nerfed the sniper will feel once I get it in my hands it would bug me if Bungie felt the need to nerf it but leave weapons like the rockets or especially the laser alone when they're in a whole different caliber of power weapon. People who struggled to use the Halo 3 sniper will only find more difficulty with Reach's but the rockets and laser allow even the worst players to get easy kills so you'd think they'd tackle those weapons first. Maybe they plan to? That's why I'm asking that question and because they haven't revealed the rockets or laser I don't expect an answer.

Make the controller rumble and the sub roar when I land.
Fracture whatever material you land one.
Have an awesome third person animation where you kneel on the ground then slowly look up.

That's what I want in my Halo.

I see what you mean, but there does not need to be a large emphasis on the character's weight considering they do, or will, jump around quite often in gameplay.

Still hoping there's some word of fall damage of some sort.

I would say the floatyness is a gameplay thing - its awesome being able to jump up and snipe people or jump up and br the crap out of someone, if they made you fall to the ground fast that would be lost.

by the same logic, you could also say guns in the future are supposed to sound as weak as halo 3's, yet everyone wants them to sound more powerful
guys, it's the future, guns are supposed to sound weak, embrace it :lol

crackdown is definitely less floaty than halo 3, you always feel the weight behind the characters actions. if you want a different example, just look at hulk in the movies. he's jumping around like he's on crack, but he never looks like he's floating around.
i'm not from the usa btw.

edit:

this man knows what i'm talking about.
primarily, this isn't even about falling speeds, it's about sound design
just like making weapons feel more powerful isn't primarily about the damage they deal but about the sound they make

Weapons are not necessarily supposed to sound weaker. A stronger sound may scare the enemy (yeah,I'm just being a jerk now)
Crackdown is very floaty as you're going up AND as you're going down. Sorry but there's no denying that. The landing itself is different though.

And now you say it's not about speed? But that was your main point from the start!

Disqualified!

Anyway, difference of opinions. To me, the feel of the armor is fine. To you, it isn't.

sure it's about speed too, but the main thing is sound design
if you double falling speed but don't change sound, it will feel like stronger gravity, not heavier characters

on an unrelated note: does anyone else find the sound of the heavy anti-matériel sniper in far cry 2 absolutely mindblowing?
i was playing with headphones on when i first fired this baby, and holy shit is it loud and crunchy
while the rest of the game was fairly average, i got a lot of fun out of sniping people because of the thunderous roar of the sniper rifle :lol
bungie, take some notes please!

DSG-1 (crysis) is my favourite sniper ever. After twenty minutes of planning and positioning etc. with nothing but ambient sound it is quite possibly the best thing to ever grace your ears. Soooo gooood.

This is worse than the AR/BR arguments.
Just jumped in. I'd have to disagree with this.

These arguments are using the fiction in conjunction with how campaign and multiplayer should function. I've even seen the argument where people would be happy if they only put ground effects into SP campaign just for realism/awesomeness. This is a topic that transcends multiplayer and delves into the canon, universe, as well as multiplayer.

I for one completely agree with this argument taking place - its completely valid and drives a point home. The Spartan's weight should be felt by gravity, no matter how you look at it. To not do so takes away from mine, and quite a few others', suspension of disbelief. Controlling plasma matter, terraforming, Halo-wide explosions, subspace, in-breeding toe-walking aliens who lie all the time and trillions of followers believing it - all of these things have actual, logical explanations within the universe that allow me to believe the details they presented and say "Wow, thats a great way to look at it, and I'll believe you while I play." I love that about Halo. If they say "Fuck it, we've done moon gravity jumping in the past, so we'll stick with it because we're using the Halo 3 engine again", disappointment will follow.

Vociferous would not be pleased with coming up with an explanation for this.

Good stuff. Really digging the new soldiers and human weapons.

Next up: Enemies.

There's already renders of Skirmishers, Elites and Grunts, so either we're getting more of them or some close ups on the other enemies.

Loving the profile of this from the top down view; you can finally see why it got its name.

I'm guessing while we won't get to pilot a Pelican in the campaign, this will serve more of a transport role than the Hornet ever did and serve part of the same purpose as the Pelican.

THe renders are pretty sweet. On the bigger pictures you can see jaggies, so I wonder if this was taken without Bungie's AA enhancement process they do to screenshots (hence, it's what we'll see in the game)?

I will say, as a person who is decent at the game but hardly great with the sniper rifle, that I would like to see it tweaked. In the hands of a skilled player on The Pit, Valhalla, and Last Resort, it can be ridiculously dominant to the degree that no other weapon in the game can be.

If you are getting sniped look for where the shots are coming from and shoot the sniper. He'll be crippled if he gets kicked out of scope from a distance and a lot of the time people are dumb enough to hide in a corner and get toasted when they can't escape. If you don't rush their side on The Pit and watch sword it's almost impossible to get dominated by snipe. Hell it's harder for someone in sword to get kills with the snipe than it is for you to kill them.

Also, a lot of this comes down to matchmaking. It should follow that if you have terrible people on your team then the other team should be the same and suck with the snipe. It's not the weapon's fault that people can dominate, it's the game's fault for giving you teammates who have no idea how to fight back. Uneven teams transcend the sniper attributes more often than people think. Spawns too can make a snipe seem ridiculous (see: the spawn on the outside of water cave on Valhalla while the enemy team holds middle hill... brutal)

Won't this change only affect bad players who grab the sniper to spam body shots for cheap kills? Good snipers will continue to own with their headshots. I don't mind getting domed, but these two shot kills while you're in the open are a bit of a cheap way to die. So if they make these harder, as a worthless sniper, I appreciate the fact that I will be probably getting killed less by other bad snipers going for these.

I don't think body shots are any 'cheaper' than using a grenade to weaken someone before you start BRing them. It's part of the game. On a large map it might feel a little cheap, but try getting 2 body shots on a map like Citadel which is filled with cover. Easier said than done.

It sounds to me like the kind of small change that gets made from one sequel to another as the weapon balance is tweaked in response to changes in gameplay and new weapons and such being added, and we might consider not freaking out until there's some more context and detail (and maybe a beta).

But I'm probably jumping to conclusions.

Nobody is freaking out, they're discussing. Thanks for another meta post about nothing. Only at HaloGAF will Halo: Reach discussion and speculation get criticized while 400 posts about a face in a piece of armor gets a free pass.

All this talk just makes me think that we need a playable Spartan model available as DLC in Crackdown 2.

You know you want it.
Wasn't this hinted at during... PAX was it? People got a Crackdown 2 Ad which hinted at a playable Spartan skin. My memory is terrible so somebody is going to have to back me up on this.

Not entirely related to Reach, but I took a couple of pictures from within Bungie on my visit there last month. I'm not a photographer, but I thought some of you might be interested to see where all the magic happens?

This x1000.

Also, those marines look like they're straight out of Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter...

I want to see more of this in promo material, kthx.

On someone's recommendations here I downloaded the Shadowrun trial, and its pretty awesome, am I right in thinking that magic is ONLY obtainable through like purchasing at the starts of matches and not actually on the map somewhere to fight over?

This is less off topic than it seems, I think some of the Shadowrun stuff will carry over to Reach and im pretty interested in hearing how shadowrun works

the reticule is crazy on Shadowrun on Reach it should only move when firing!
