Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

Heh, I'm seeing a lot of WoW like things in Reach. Certain armor tiers will be locked out until people kill enough Elites in Campaign or something like that, similar to the supply stuff during the AQ event in WoW...plus the Arena. :p I'm liking what I'm hearing though, the game will have some serious legs with all of this stuff.

For those still thinking the Microsoft ExpertZone "method" is a good way to gimp their way into early Beta access, here's an update.

Thanks for the sleuthing. We're making sure that:

1. Only legit retailers are given codes by Microsoft
2. These legit retailers aren't granted beta access prior to May 3rd.

Thanks! :)

Still handy for actual retailers and might mean some folks can give out their spare codes to ODST-less folks like the Halo 2 codes.

Decent update. Was expecting a more indepth look at player investment, but I guess all that was said at g4tv was all that there was to it.

As some might have noticed in customs, english is my 3rd language, so can someone explain what the following answer meant??

Q. Man, I can see it now: Part Two. People are just going to sit on their pile of Credits until they have enough to buy the top tier in every category. What are you gonna do to stop players from saving instead of investing?
A. Saving is an Investment in your future.

Also, that player is going to look hysterical, default armor everywhere except for the REDACTED.

Also, there will be 2 amount of credits somewhere on screen?? I mean, the ones you have left after spending in stuff, and the total amount you've ever acquired that defines your level?

Timing and content of the podcast should be a pretty monster clue. :)

Hmm, that's got to mean a blowout on the updated Sandbox I should think.

The answer is in two parts, the first part "Saving is an Investment in your future." is more of a joke. People typically say this about finance when you are younger.

The second part "Also, that player is going to look hysterical, default armor everywhere except for the REDACTED." means that should a player save up and hold out for the best armor that it would look funny because they'd have almost all default armor except for the whatever the exception was. Something else was meant to be where REDACTED is but was edited out.

Hope that helps

I assumed it was something like 'Codpiece'.
lol - yeah, saving up [x] number of credits will grant you free access to better codpieces. So when he's saved enough for all the epic tier stuff, he'll already have the epic codpiece. :lol

Thanks guys, I get it now. Still need clarification on if there will be 2 amounts of credits on screen or what, but I don't think that specific info is out there.

Seems to me like there will be a "total credits earned" stat somewhere, but I doubt it will be on the screen at all times. Seems like something that would go in your profile, like a bar showing progress towards next rank.

Yeah I should have been more clear. It is likely a swappable armor part that was edited.

ie Also, that player is going to look hysterical, default armor everywhere except for the boots.

But since they haven't announced boots as a changeable piece it is changed to:

Also, that player is going to look hysterical, default armor everywhere except for the REDACTED.

EDIT: Regarding the two seperate amounts of credits it looks like the screens have a "credits on hand" value which is basically your purse to buy armor with and the progress bar which shows how many more credits you need to get to the next rank. I don't think an overall credits accumulated will be visible at such a top level of the interface. That's just speculation though.

When did Bungie start working on challenges/player investment system. A friend of mine is convinced Bungie got the idea completely from Infinity Ward and began working on it, apparently in the past 5 months (when MW2 shipped). Anyone have any idea or a plausible answer I can give him?

Well its more likely they got the idea from CoD4 and have been refining it since. I love the idea of challenges and its the one thing I hope they would 'copy'.

What? Since when was Modern Warfare 2 a huge paradigm shift for multiplayer games? Everything in Modern Warfare 2 is just a slightly tweaked version of of a system that was in the first game. I wouldn't doubt Call of Duty 4's influence has hit Reach in some ways, but Modern Warfare 2 isn't exactly some brave new push forward for multiplayer games.

Probably inspired by CoD4, among other titles, but what I like about this is that there are no specific weapon challenges that would make players constantly using one thing or another and be more reliant on their own self-accomplishment rather that teamwork. As noted in the update, these Commendations (Challenges) are more like:
[Precision - Kill a Player with a Precision-class weapon [requires DMR, Needle Rifle or Sniper Rifle]

I'd say it is more Rainbox Six than anything else.

This. The customization is more Rainbow, minus the armor pieces affecting your movement and protection and the challenges are broader unlike CoD making you have to use a particular weapon to complete the challenge.

Tell him to check out World of Warcraft. He'll likely fall into a gasping swoon.

Tonight's update was alright. To be honest, I've been busy with PAX East and hanging out w/ Hostile, vhfive ad Revengeance. When I did read the update, I was expecting a little more but oh well. There's always next Friday. :)

I'm SO stoked over the fact that there's Dailies and Weeklies in a Halo game. I'm really loving this mmo-ish vibe some of the multiplayer features are giving off (monthly Arena resets; Daily and Weekly quests objectives that reward credits for gear). All over my face.

Also, new week's podcast sounds pretty freaking awesome. I can't wait for it!
I agree, this is going to be really exciting and a reason to actually check it and play everyday. But I'll probably already be doing that anyways.

So I was in Fred Meyer today (Kroger in the Pac NW) and I was buying some socks. I passed by the underwear section, and lo and behold, Halo 3 boxers :|

Any news on Reach merchandise, Urk? Perhaps a shirt with a jetpack on the back? :lol

paxeast has been fun so far (but very crowded) looking forward to tomorrow.

Also I saw a piece of armor called: MP/BASE SECURITY in the BWU.
This hopefully means the I can have my huge ass helmet if I want.

Heh. I've seen a few people with Halo 3 messenger bags, and regular store shirts (Halo 3 logo/Halo Wars logo). I only have a few mini-buttons (I usually just wear the Carnage and Scorpion ones since they're not blatantly from Halo), but I wish I could get some shirts (well maybe not the Mark Echo Halo ones :lol , more on the lines of Bungie's shirts, or real life shirts like the ones for the Avatars.. )

Would love more Halo mini-buttons, would swoon over a set of buttons with all of the medals on them. Urk? Frankie? Anyone? They're like stickers for your backpack/purse/person! Who doesn't like stickers?!

New brand of Mountain Dew Game Fuel called "Noble Nectar" will arrive in the fall. The theme for it is that it takes like old sweat. Which is to say, it'll just be regular Mountain Dew with a new package.

Next week's podcast sounds like the absolute tits. Can't fucking wait.

Heard something about Challenges similar to Annual and a quick mention of limited (flight?) elite customization. Awesome. I just hope they don't port flight over in all its Halo 3 glory. I don't want a blackout version of flight ya here me!

Wu made it rain Bungie buttons the other year at PAX. Think I have a PAS and and Seventh Column one.

Is PAX East as crappy as the one in the West? If not for the Bungie booth I would have been totally pissed at spending money going to it, was definitely the low point of the trip for me personally. :lol

I just had a thought about Reach multiplayer.

On the b-net main page, we see a pic of a red elite holding a blue spartan. But in the video bomb, all invasion/invasion slayer footage has the teams colored green vs purple.

Thus, I conclude that invasion and invasion slayer are not the only spartan vs. elite game types.

or you can just change the team colours like every other halo game ever
I doubt Invasion is simply Team Slayer myself. For instance, we see the generators being destroyed. I bet they also have a variant for Assault/Bomb, which would be great.

Normal Reach teams red/blue and Invasion being purple/green would be pretty unique.

I hope I can enjoy the casual side of Halo in Reach like I did with Halo 2. I used to love driving a warthog around in Halo 2 and just laughing my ass off. I used to get together with my friends and family and just drive warthogs around maps, crashing into each and doing stupid shit. I lost that a few months after Halo 3 came out. I just got so ultra competitive lol. Now when I play Halo, I'm having fun when I'm winning highly competitive games against top ranked players. I still laugh at stupid shit though like sticking teammates, that always makes me laugh.

It's not. There's both Invasion and Invasion Slayer. Where were you when Tied The Leader made their analysis vid?

Anyway, yes. Most games are red spartan vs blue spartan. But the bomb vid showed invasion and invasion slayer consists of green spartan vs purple elite.

And you two completely ignored my point. The b-net pic shows red elite vs blue spartan.

There is another game type that hasn't been revealed.

Neverender, wtf are you talking about?

i mean i don't know how you deduced that there are more than those two elite/spartan gametypes based on colour. i'm not disputing that there aren't but it doesn't really prove anything.

Because we know that in both invasion and invasion slayer the team colors are green and purple.

So, if we see a pic with elites vs spartan of colors other than green and purple, there's another elite vs spartan mode other than invasion and invasion slayer.

The team colors represented are just red/blue and green/purple. The only other colors we see are from ffa, red/yellow/white.

Shit yeah, that used to be my favorite part of playing Halo 2. Not sure why that kind of ended with Halo 3... I blame the maps.

to which i said maybe they just changed the team colours? like i said there mostly likely is more game modes but i don't think the colours point to that. aaaaaanyway.

The colors used by spartans in ffa games in the video appear to be yellow and white/grey. Loving that yellow color. We see it in 3 different spots in the trailer. 2 slayer matches, and 1 headhunter match. I wonder if we'll have more limited color options in the beta than in the full game?

It looks to me like in the Invasion segments of the video there are both Red & Purple Elites and Green and Steel Spartans. Could it be that in Invasion the species are seperated and you are free to customize your colour? So you could have a Blue Spartan and a Blue Elite? There looks to be a huge difference to easily identify which is which.
