I thought this week was about the maps in the Beta? Unless the "new" map is not going to be new. Or that map is made specifically for the gametype?

Good question. Was wondering that myself... seems that he'll be revealing Invasion and an Invasion map for sure.

So it looks like Invasion is indeed getting revealed next Friday night. Too bad its most likely going to miss next weeks update. Then again who cares a month from now the beta will be in full gear :)

So i was downloading the MW2 stimulus map package and while I was waiting I decided to clean up my hard drive and I saw that the Stimulus package was being downloaded labeled as "Halo: Reach"

Sorry if old, IGN just posted this. Looks like info coming in the morning.
Nice. With the maps reveal, we'll hopefully have some screens of said maps to dissect.

Anyone have suggested (free or relatively inexpensive) program for making transparent .png files? The most elaborate thing I've used is MS Paint, but I'm thinking of kicking it up a notch for the beta thread.

Thanks. Tinkering with it now. I added text as a separate layer! This is a big step for me.

Try GIMP.

You know what Halo 2 map I love that I don't see mentioned very much? Waterworks.
Great map. Liked the Sword in the middle structure. Made Neutral Bomb frantic.

Well it COULD kill someone at one end of the map from the other, if you had a clear line of sight. That’s why Valhalla is a great map in my mind. There is no direct line of sight from one end to the other in any direction. There’s large-scale and small-scale cover for infantry and vehicle alike.
A person can still sit in the middle of Valhalla and destroy those at the base with the Laser. Not much of a difference. The map of Coagulation is just wider and longer. A person can't lock on with a Rocket from base to base like many here like to imply. The only pure straight line of sight a person can achieve with a weapon in Coagulation is a Sniper, and that's hitting a person standing still.

I've been down the road regarding Laser. I just can't agree that a weapon can be used as a Sniper on maps, as well as being labeled a "anti-vehicle" weapon, is not over-powerful or requiring skill.

Controlling the middle of Valhalla isn't as easy as you make it out to be. All it takes is one guy to flank from one of the sides to throw the set-up off balance, and a decent team can take the other down from there.
I'm just talking from personal experience. The team in the middle easily can see everything from the hill, including where each player from the opposing team decides to move. But even if a player does somehow manage to sneak off to one side, the team in the middle still out-numbers him with the addition of a lot of cover to hide behind. If someone comes from pelican side, you can move behind the tree or back down the hill to get out of line of fire, and it's even easier getting out of sight from anyone on the opposite side.

I think it's Cliff Approach, same place as this

But I'm not sure, it could say something else Approach when further away from the cliff.

I hope there's gameplay videos to go with the map reveals.

Please. :(

I'm not expecting anything more than a few screenshots of each map with a detailed writeup, but I would love to be surprised.
Do it, Bungle. Pretty please?

That sky right there...

I really hope that today we'll get to see some gameplay shots (if not vids) of the beta without all the placeholders that were used in the multiplayer trailer.

The new glimpses from the april's fools ViDoc, like that pic above, are truly impressive.

I want to see the detail in a proper 720p screenshot, at least. Having seen the new alan wake trailer, I can't wait to see what Bungie has done with Halo; the first ViDoc is still unbelievable.

So while we were playing Custom games today someone brought up an interesting question, how would loading Halo 3 on to a USB Memory device affect performance?

What caused the problem originally was the disc copying data and to the hard drive and then loading it off of the hdd correct? This would bypass that wouldn't it?

If it's not a good USB it'll be even slower than loading off the harddrive.

he game was meant to cache in a certain way because harddrives did not allow for installs. So installing it will make it cache once again after it loads off the harddrive. Essentially it makes loads longer no matter where you load them from.

Nothing to do with the new USB devices update, but someone on Eurogamer said that if you install the game to the hard drive and then put your campaign save on a memory card, the game loads faster than any other method.

(The maps for MP will still take longer, I presume.)

Any chance the new gametype GTTV will reveal is going to be Firefight?

If firefight features matchmaking (and we know it will), it would make sense to have at least one map for it in the beta.

So that it will be like this: 4 maps for multiplayer + 1 for firefight.

One can dream, at least. xD

God I hope not. That would be a huge let down if they covered firefight over invasion.

Well, they said "new" gametype.

And invasion is not new in the sense that we already know it exists.

That's what I was thinking; they've been quite silent about firefight. I'm starting to get worried xD

I dunno Invasion would still be 'new'. They haven't talked about Firefight because it won't be in the beta. The full game isn't out for a while now =p

I think someone suggested it earlier but I'd rather see a Spec Ops type mode rather than another survival mode. Bunch of crazy ass encounters/objectives that wouldn't have been appropriate in the campaign with 4 player co-op.

Could be.

The game is horribly far away from release. No need to remind me of that :lol

The silence around firefight is a clear hint. There's something big coming up.

Never thought of such a possibility. Could be interesting; as long as it's endlessly replayable, everything is fine.

MW2's spec-ops mode was a ton of fun. Just once though; Halo is the perfect sandbox to ensure replayability.

Nice I had a feeling IGN would be this weeks lucky website as I posted earlier this week. Gotta figure as the reveals get bigger and down to the nitty gritty the big time websites get the content. Lets hope IGN actually does a decent job for once, however I'm not counting on it. No big deal though since the glorious update is just a day away anyways

I haven't been keeping up on the Reach news about the maps and whatnot... but if Bungie gimps us on the amount of maps for Big Team I'll be so fucking pissed and likely stop playing games all-together.

Like, the maps on Halo3 are such a disappointment. Even the remake of Midship couldn't stop me from quitting Halo.

I've been a Die Hard Halo fan since CE but Halo3 just killed it for me. This shit sounds so depressing just talking about it. :/

Why do all complaints end/begin with "big Halo CE fans but Halo 3 ruined -insert random feature/aspect-"?

Maybe I am just too diffident.

It's fine because I'm an asshole. I've been complaining about Halo on this board since forever. You just don't remember. *edit* Also, I've played the shit out of Halo3... so yeah, I think I can criticize the only game in the series that made me so bored to death that I stopped playing it all together.

And that bald headed m$ employee still owes me a match on Halo3.

I was just expressing a general feeling; nothing against you. You've been here longer than I have, so I don't have the rights to judge your position straight away.

Every now and then someone jumps in a Halo thread and starts off like that. That's why I said that.

Didn't mean to be offensive or whatever.

Thank God.

Just started reading, but:

All four maps were chosen in order to test a specific selection of gametypes and team sizes. Sword Base and Powerhouse cover the Slayer, Headhunter, end of the spectrum, Overlook is perfect for the NT 1* ("Generator Defense") game type, and Boneyard is a great landscape custom built for Invasion.
So Invasion and the gametype with the generators are different. The plot thickens!

Edit:

It also is indeed small and intense. It works great with a variety of gametypes and in the beta expect to see things like Slayer, Headhunter and Stockpile.
Stockpile sounds like a Headhunter variant.

There's Swordbase and Powerhouse, two maps that will feature "party" game types like Headhunter and Slayer in the Beta. Backing them up is Overlook, a space pulled from the campaign that will feature the Generator Defense test situation. And then there's Boneyard, a map that Bungie is staying relatively quiet about for now.

Nice.

A quick look-through before I leave, but I'm pleasantly surprised to read that there will be four maps!

The pics are gorgeous.

"Network Test 1 is really our way of saying that we need to test these really stressful network conditions, let's come up with a game type that allows us to test those conditions and then put it in its own play list. We call it Network Test 1, bear with us. This should be a really cool, fun game type for you guys to play but ultimately it may not ship with the game. We're doing it to stress the net code and give us your feedback on your networking experience. "

Interesting, may not make it into the final game.
