Halo Reach Reveal Thread - Matchmaking/Multiplayer Details Revealed

ManCannon said:
Video is still a little bit off. We're still building up.. someone nailed it already, map shots this week, 'action shots' next week with more details on gametypes and then on next Friday's GTV you'll see some footage of Boneyard and Invasion along with some details. A flood of footage is still a little ways off though.
Can't wait to dig in some footage. I'd love to see a brief clip of a team slayer game on one of the maps.

Suggestions? Questions? Do share, help a brother out. What elaboration would you like? (note: Invasion/Boneyard is unfortunately off limits as it's committed elsewhere and gametypes in general are outside the scope for this week - you'll learn more about those next week!)
Do the folks at Bungie have a most favored map out of the four? That's all I can think of right now. I'll post again when I have some more. Ghal asked a really good question.

Sword Base would be really tough to comprehend looking at it from the top down. Five floors, yo.
That still leaves Overlook. As for Sword Base, no worries: we'll just need five floor layouts. :p

Also, you need to make Sword Base one word, that way each map name can be a compound word.

pfft. They all need to go medieval.

Power House = Fortress
Overlook = Kings Field
Sword Base = Chamber
Boneyard = DeathPit or hell it can stay Boneyard.

:p

Further suggestions in this vein:

Hero House
Death Trap
Awesome Place
Bad Guy Lair
Space Station
Super Room
Only acceptable ones as they have the two syllable connection between words.

But I do/did like Boneyard and Powerhouse. The others just reek mediocre names.

This is stupid. GAF, if you're going to be the moderators of BUNGIE favs, shouldn't you use files from the community that are really good. Not these stupid maps and stuff that are made by you. It's to show peoples files that are really good and haven't been noticed. It's kind of stupid, again how you're abusing the job that you have of putting files on BUNGIE favs and just waste it by putting your own files on it.

WOW "NeoGAF", who are you and what have you done with our favs? (really, I have never heard of you before)

Hahahahaha you provoke quite the reaction :p

Where else are they going to park these?

Sword Hangar just doesn't roll off the tongue.
At least, that's what I think the name refers to.

I'm really liking the shots of all of the maps so far. And I totally somehow knew that Powerhouse was going to be deeply inspired by what High Ground tried to do. Just hopefully it actually works out this time. :lol

Really excited for Swordbase, and I have it in my head that Boneyard would be cool if there were huge chunks of destroyed ships/carriers in it that you ran around in.

Powerhouse is a decent name. Boneyard is a good name. I can live with Overlook, although really the compound word "theme" is a little stifling, and "Overlook" sounds like something I would check my mail with. And while we're at it, it really fucking bothers me that SAND TARP is all caps and two words, while Sandtrap is not. Although it probably should be two words...

Crucially, "Swordbase" has to go.

(Dear Bungie, gimme a video flythrough of the map and a brief contextual note about how it features in the singleplayer campaign, and I will give you a name that rings through the ages. Trust me, it will be a name so precise and repeatable that you will hear a chorus of twelve year-olds screaming for its veto every time you dream.)

@Spasm That's what I thought too, and that's why I like the name. I imagine it's just the casual name the soldiers give the place due to the constant Longswords presence, or maybe it's the place where the offices in charge of their production are located. I'm also half expecting to be able to look out of a window, and see a shitload of those aircrafts just parked there next to a runway.

But I need to go back and read the article again, I don't even remember if they mentioned the map location or purpose of the building.

If we were to let a bunch of military grunts name our Halo maps, Valhalla would be called "Laser Hill" and Epitaph would be named "Hammer Church".

Based on your other suggestions:

'Super Secret Awesome Space Station House Place With Scary Death Trap Room Containing Sword Lair For Bad Guys OR Heroes'

A name that rings through the ages indeed.

And guys wasnt Urk looking for people to do Bungie Favorites in the future, hint hint!

Five floors? Would be awesome if you could explain in the BWU some of the methods to get to the various floors, is it all mancannons and walk ways? Or is there special lifts like in Construct?

I was considering putting FUD into the Favourites lucky draw hat, but there's only a handful of us at the moment. =\ Maybe in future, hopefully.

We were already on Bungie Favorites (I ran the operation).

If it happens again, I'd be glad to bring NGHC 2 to lead it again.

Like this, may mean the do-away with invisible walls:
Do not want. At least you can get around invisible walls. This is simply a countdown that instant kills you. Think Snowbound. Unless you can break the map in Forge, then there will be no exploring.
I hope there's a way to get around it for customs or something.

Don't forget:

Cool Map
Rad Level
Awesome Arena
Kill Area
Blast Block
Merry Square

Is the count down disguised as something? Like a ship in the sky that crashes into you?

Perhaps the abandoned lifts from Citadel...?

There are millions of whiny 5-year olds on Earth, and I AM THEIR KING.
Blizzard just announced their SCII CE, and it is pretty meh, I will pass. I am hoping for another cat helmet for Reach, but has Bungie hinted at anything?

I wouldn't mind knowing the authors of these maps. I know there are a lot of people involved, but I'd still like to know who the major brains behind these works are. You know, for later praise (no burning effigies, promise). :D

"Foundry", for instance, isn't called "Elevator Supply Warehouse X571" or whatever the fuck, it's Foundry. Blackout isn't "Drilling Platform", and Cold Storage isn't "Installation 05 Flood Observation Facility".

Actually, Foundry's internal name is "Warehouse."

Just sayin', Dutch.

No, I appreciate that. It's still a silly name. No other Halo maps are labelled literally.

Then I guess you're happy Sword Base isn't called "Longsword Hangar and Maintenance Bay 04-C" :D

Shishka said:

Right, its internal name. And then presumably you realized you had to release it into the wider, wild, wildly speculating world, and so slapped a more abstract moniker on it, one that encompassed not only its literal function within the Halo universe, but also its manifold possibilities as a space in which new creations would be Forged by your community.

And so it gained a name that had not one but two meanings, granting it greater depth, not to mention longevity, immediacy, and specificity in the minds of your audience.

But then, lo! On the horizon! It's...

"Sword... Base!"
"Really, guys?"
"Well, yeah... it's the base where the swords are kept."

Was wondering about this earlier today myself. We've already got a helmet, how about MC's cod piece this time? I hope there's enough sequels for a full costume.

So when drafting big OP's such as for the Halo 3 thread, I start out just outlining the topics I need to hit. My goal is to succinctly summarize every feature and then link to the primary info source. With Reach, my goal is to really improve the organization and make it cleaner than the Halo 3 thread, streamlining the layout (heavy use of thumbnails for large images, etc.) It's quickly becoming an intimidating task for Reach.

Features | Matchmaking | Loadouts | The Arena (Personal Rank, Seasons) | Commendations | Credit (cR) System | Armor Customization | Spartans vs. Elites | Active Roster | Veto System

And that's without the lists of maps, game types, weapons, armor abilities and other stuff that needs to go in (not to mention any other features that make it in, such as screenshots, file sharing and saved films). Trying to sum it up, it finally dawned on me why it's all been rolled out so slowly: there's a shitton of content in this Beta. The OP is going to be as big as Halo 3's retail release.

Thanks, you reminded me why I want a huge space battle in Halo.

Already told you guys, we need to be begging Bungie for Halo CE Remake in Halo 3 engine (with achievements and Online play) for the Collector's Edition for Reach.

I also hate the name "Sword Base"
I think it's one of the worst map names I've ever heard in Halo.

If it's really talking about the ship, maybe "Sword Hanger" or just "Hanger" or "The Hanger"

Just by looking at it and knowing no campaign context I'd call it "Vertigo" or "Citadel"

EDIT:Also, Boneyard and Powerhouse are perfect MP map names. 'Overlook' reminds me of 'Standoff', I like it as a name.

When you break down the individual features and start listing them alongside changes, updates and raw data, it really does draw your attention to the sheer amount of new content.

I've found it challenging with the OP in this thread not to go overboard with specific feature sets but it reached a point where I had to draw a line.

Imagine the proper Official Reach thread later in the year. All the things not yet talked about or revealed, all the changes and updates... :lol

Pity the uninitiated casual fan trying to get to grips with Beta after ignoring the weekly updates and whatnot.

BTW, might have to ask a Moderator about this, but because of the screenshot feature and depending on whether not the camera features are viable enough to merit it, a Reach Player Screenshot thread may be useful.

I would support this, actually I'll take a remake in the Halo 1 engine with achievements and online MP and Co-op.

The map names kinda suck.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing, hopefully they are holding out with maps that have some pretty cool names for the full game. They aren't bad (except SwordBase) but Bungie has has come up with better names for maps.

Any kid could come up with Vertigo, it's much more smh than Sword Base. And Citadel is taken.

Oh thats right Citadel was in the new map pack, totally forgot about that. I guess thats why it felt Halo'y to me.

Whatchu got smart guy? Sword base is terrible we can agree on that.

EDIT: How about, "Pent-Up" derivative of the five floors and verticallity of the stage

Half a page of complaining about map names? Really?
I understand the whining...

But a normal person wouldn't not date a nice girl because she had a weird name... :/

You won't play a map because it's got a name like Swordbase?
