Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

4 player split screen co-op with 2 xbox360's on legendary was probably the best experience i ever had playing halo

no split screen co-op, no buy

I've played through Halo 3, ODST, Reach and Halo 4 local co-op with my oldest son. We've had some great gaming memories because of the Halo series. While it may not seem like a big deal to mostly online co-op players, it's a big dissapointment for my family.

because the younger generation doesn't do that stuff anymore? They will have to settle for having their own xbox to play halo. Frankie has explained why they had to do it so either accept it or move on.

Pretty much this. Maybe at some point after post launch they can see if they can work on some trickery to get it to work well, but it ain't happen right now and maybe never.

Stating you are not buying the game or greatly disappointed to voice your concern is fine (for those who actually care, not those who are just jumping on the hate wagon because), but repetitively doing it ain't gonna change much.

take turns playing the game. Its just a different method but the outcome is the same. You are still playing with your girlfriend but now with only one controller.

I dunno why but this made me lol.

I need take a moment to make an important correction on something we miscommunicated in the story. I misspoke during the interview when stating that online co-op campaign would be supported with an Xbox Live Silver account. Co-op campaign will require Xbox Live Gold to play. I want to extend my sincere apologies to our fans, and to Game Informer, for this error and any confusion it has caused.

That said, it is important to us that fans have the opportunity to play the full co-op campaign experience and we are doing this by providing a 14-day Xbox Live Gold trial with Halo 5: Guardians.

...

You know what? This is an improvement. 343 actually laid out the disappointment BEFORE releasing the game for once. I...

I unsarcastically give them kudos this day. Relish the fuck out of it, because the other shoe has yet to drop. And it will drop.

I've played every Halo co-op with my buddy. Since Halo 2, we've taken off release day and then hung out all day and finished each game during the day. I'll miss that. Won't be the same sitting at our own houses. It will feel much more like drinking alone.

Im pleasantly surprised this outcry exists... i wish it happened when more franchises / genre's skipped out on it...

While it's unfortunate, I do think for the vast majority of people ITT it's childish to say "I'm out" over solely something like this.

IDK, people letting the publisher know how they feel is childish? I mean we are 20 pages in and I see new people on each page saying the same thing. I also see (for the most part) The same 3 people defending it.

Why? Why do we have to lose features that are series staples? For the series to evolve? Maybe it's evolving wrong.

Once again, I understand if understand if you use it a lot but at the same time you can't completely dismiss a game because of it.

I just did. Negative one sale from me. I was going to buy this game on release, but no co op in Halo, no buy. Some people here think that since the last time they played co-op was many years ago, therefore why would anyone else play it, therefore you are wrong. When a series staple game mode gets dropped for the new iteration, it is a legitimate gripe for any game.

And they should bring that and their TVs over so they can play games?

I know I'm old and all, but do people not hang out IRL any more?

I agree. It shocks me that people in this thread are saying, in so many words, "Friends?? Real people next to me?! Playing on the same TV?? That's so old school! Get with the antisocial times!"

People are tools only, don't get close.

Then I guess you'll miss out on an overall package.

so this kills what little desire I had for an xbox one (microsoft's exclusives in general just aren't to my liking outside of halo). I wasn't going to get one for a few more years (likely when I could get one for sub 200) but one of the main reasons I was planning on getting one was for halo 5 to play co op with my buddy when he is in town, as he would never ever ever buy an xbox one and thus it will now be impossible to play the campaign with him co op :/

I understand that online play is becoming more and more important, but it would be nice if they remembered the people who like to play split screen with a friend in the same room. I don't care if the resolution is half of what it would be single player I am just happy to play with my friend.

I do wonder if this will effect sale at all, but I doubt it will. While some people pick up halo for the campaign (like me) most seem to pick it up for the MP which this won't remotely affect those people.

When is Halo 5 supposed to be available for a digital pre-order? I've already pre-ordered digital BLOPS3. Now I just need to pre-order the digital versions of Halo 5 and Forza 6.

I don't know but you'd better get it quick before they run out.

Welp. Simple human error, but .. damn.

Yes but the game simulation runs at 60fps so you'd be losing a lot more than visual fidelity.

I understand that 60 fps is a part of the experience BUT in split screen I believe users honestly don't care to have even a (sub?) 720p resolution and a locked 30fps at least.
It's sad of course but when is regarding split screen everything is ok as compromise if the option is still here because you have already half of the screen anyway and you are just here to enjoy the gameplay of the game with a friend nothing else, it’s an issue for MP but I do not think it is a big deal for campaign.

I really think 343i should think again about this feature for the campaign before the release of the game or at least via an update later.

I think simply a warning that the experience will be downgraded in split screen will be enough and in order to have the full experience, you recommend to play over Xbox Live but I know that optimising the campaign and the engine code for split screen is harder than mostly think so it’s probably a lot of money and time which maybe 343i does not have, each project got a specific budget to respect as well and some decisions(sacrifices) need to be made sometimes in order to have something better behind as result.

Even Bungie with Destiny did not put split screen… It would have been awesome in it actually but maybe we would have lost something else instead :(

I've completed every Halo except ODST. I never completed one single player campaign. Halo was always the game my wife and I would play together and she is not a gamer. This news is disappointing. None of my son's friends have an Xbox One yet, so he won't be able to play multiplayer campaign that way either. As a side note, I haven't purchased a Call of Duty game since World at War.

You can move a console and a tv into another house?

It's 2015. Let split-screen go.

If losing it is truly necessary for a technical reason, everyone can decide how the pros/cons balance out for themselves. In theory I get you, but acting like it's a vestige of the past is ridiculous. Couch co-op has been a great way to enjoy these games. I legitimately know people who are reconsidering their buy because it's how they enjoyed Halo previously.

I'm in for release window, but the change here still ranks as a disappointment.

It's 2015. I'm letting Halo go.

After trying to have a MCC H2A co-op session with my partner sitting next to me, I'll be following your path and just give up on the franchise altogether. No LAN support in MCC was the final straw for me - don't have the time and patience for 343i's shit.

people still play split screen? split screen was great back when there was no online play, playing Goldeneye in your parent's basement, or Halo CE on a couple screens for 8 player slumber parties. But in 2015, Live has long become a staple.

Now the LAN thing, I'm pissed about.

A bump for this? lol....

Of course people use splitscreen. The internet does not move ALL interaction with your friends to Xbox Live.

Peep the split screen goodness going on in the rocket League thread.

Playing with friends online is fun, but nothing really beats being in the same room

Once you hit 30+ you'll find you have less time to sit around and play video games during regular hours. It's fun for younger people + college I guess.

Thread's only ten days old, and I saw Frankie's quote in an article that linked to the thread.

I'm 36, I tend to manage my time fine, but hey whatever.

Man this is a sad generation. Couch co-op is all but dead, every game asks gamers to give them more money, pay to play online, buggy unfinished games being released before they are finished I could go on. Just really disappointed in the current gaming landscape.

The march towards 60 FPS has come with a lot of consequences for 343. This is a big announcement for the Halo faithful. Some of my best friendships were forged in Halo 1 local multiplayer and system link matches.

It's the best thing about Halo and always has been. If it weren't for the local co-op in Halo I literally never would have bought an Xbox, certainly wouldn't have bought a 360 on launch day. Big, epic fail. Fucking shame, 343.

Hadn't even thought about it but yeah, Halo is bow a single player only game UNLESS you pay for an online subscription. Depressing generation, but not as depressing as this series since Bungie let go of the reigns.

So no LAN coop either? A great feature present in every Halo after CE and until 343i.

Each Halo lags in LAN coop in the MCC, because unlike the 360 games, MCC doesn't support LAN coop. So games on the same network have unnecessary lag and lose connection often. I've also had split-screen coop lose connection. :(

Not that I play this series much anymore but when I did 2P Co-op was a huge draw, either online or campaign.

That is disappointing to hear about for the series continued fans. I feel like it shows their priorities when it comes to development.

I'm 36, I tend to manage my time fine, but hey whatever.

Me and my mates are all around the 30 mark, most of us with families as well, and still manage to find time to hang out on a regular basis just fine, which more often than not will result in some Smash Bros or MK8 (Lately anyways... the games vary but you get the idea).

The thought of only hanging out with my mates through a headset would feel kind of cold and impersonal to me tbh.

Which other shoe? Also 14 days is more than enough time to finish it on a couple of difficulty modes.

Halo 1 + 2 in couch co-op was one of my favourite games to play growing up. Had a lot of fun flying and driving vehicles and trying out glitches with family and friends. I'm probably never going to have the friends/console/living arrangement for this to happen again so I don't get affected by this but it's sad to see couch co-op continue to be phased out of games. It's so much more enjoyable than online play.

People are talking about 343i's priorities being messed up but standards seem so insanely high graphically nowadays who knows if that's the case. I don't know the first thing about game development.

I'm 33 with a kid and a wife, and I don't hang around with buddies on my couch very often, since you know, the previous part of the sentence. We play online, usually after 10PM, when the aforementioned are in bed.

Couch was great when Live didn't exist and our gen was young. The new gen is all about online, so it's kinda a moot point now.

Extremely disappointing to hear this series staple, and one of its strong selling points, is now gone. Halo 4 split-screen campaign co-op with my girlfriend was a blast and we had planned on picking up an XBO (with an extra controller) to go through H5 together. I guess those plans have been effectively nuked by 343i.

R.I.P couch co-op. :(

A shame, but unsurprising these days when virtually every modern AAA game is pinned around everything to do with online play and maximized visuals. Doesn't seem like that there are very many big games left that bother with splitscreen now or even in the last few years, and, certainly, this gen has been mostly a one player to a console standard.

Once you hit 30+ you'll find you have less time to sit around and play video games during regular hours. It's fun for younger people + college I guess.
Au contrare. Once you hit 30 (and especially if you start a family) the ability to play a game together in the same room will become invaluable.

Sorry that you don't have any friends who want to come over to your house (am I imitating your dismissive tone correctly?)

So fuck the next generation of kids right?
Man ya'll are crazy

I play with my friends online too, the ones that live out of state.

But this whole 'want to play with your local friends? We have an answer for that, a $350 Xbox live gold card" is ridiculous
